{"id":1183,"date":"2013-04-22T16:54:31","date_gmt":"2013-04-22T12:54:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ankakh.am\/?p=1183"},"modified":"2013-04-22T16:56:15","modified_gmt":"2013-04-22T12:56:15","slug":"1183","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/en\/?p=1183","title":{"rendered":"Dozens of Afghan schoolgirls taken to hospital after &#8216;poison attack by Taliban&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/g3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-1177\" alt=\"g3\" src=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/g3.jpg\" width=\"444\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/g3.jpg 634w, https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/g3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/g3-449x300.jpg 449w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Up to 74 girls in Afghanistan have been treated after a suspected poisoning attack at their school, officials said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The girls became ill after smelling gas at their school, Bibi Maryam, in Takhar province&#8217;s capital, Taluqan.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the children remained in a critical condition in hospital last night.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Public Health is investigating and samples of the victims&#8217; blood have been sent for testing.<\/p>\n<p>Sulaiman Moradi, Takhar governor&#8217;s spokesman, said the attack was to try to prevent girls from going to school.<\/p>\n<p>He said &#8216;enemies of the government and the country&#8217; were to blame for the mass illness.<\/p>\n<p>There have been numerous substantiated cases of mass poisonings of schoolgirls in Afghanistan by ultra-conservatives who oppose giving women access to education.<\/p>\n<p>The girls in Takhar, about 155 miles north of Kabul, were taken to a provincial hospital.<\/p>\n<p>No-one has claimed responsibility for either incident.<\/p>\n<p>Takhar has been a hotbed of militancy and criminal activity since 2009, with groups such as the Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan active.<\/p>\n<p>The Taliban banned education for women and girls but since they were ousted in 2001, females have returned to schools, especially in the capital city Kabul.<\/p>\n<p>Afghan women have won back basic rights in education, voting and employment since 2001.<\/p>\n<p>However, fears are growing that such gains could be traded away as Western forces prepare to leave and the Afghan government seeks peace talks with the Taliban.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Up to 74 girls in Afghanistan have been treated after a suspected poisoning attack at&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":1177,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"image","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[215,155,137],"tags":[324,13834],"class_list":["post-1183","post","type-post","status-publish","format-image","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news","category-other-countries","category-world","tag-afghanistan","tag-world","post_format-post-format-image"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1183","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/4"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1183"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1183\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/1177"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1183"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=1183"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=1183"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
