{"id":4733,"date":"2013-05-01T15:50:41","date_gmt":"2013-05-01T10:50:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/?p=4733"},"modified":"2013-05-01T15:50:41","modified_gmt":"2013-05-01T10:50:41","slug":"classic-car-driven-by-sir-winston-churchill-during-world-war-two-sells-in-germany-for-400000-after-online-auction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/en\/?p=4733","title":{"rendered":"Classic car driven by Sir Winston Churchill during World War Two sells in Germany for \u00a3400,000 after online auction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ch4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4731\" alt=\"ch4\" src=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ch4.jpg\" width=\"634\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ch4.jpg 634w, https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ch4-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/ch4-456x300.jpg 456w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/a>This incredible classic car was used by Sir Winston Churchill during World War Two.<\/p>\n<p>So it is no surprise that it has just fetched almost half-a-million pounds following an online auction.<\/p>\n<p>However, what perhaps is a surprise is that the former favourite of Britain&#8217;s celebrated war-time leader was sold from Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The beautifully restored, silver and black 1939 Daimler DB18 Drophead Coupi sparked a bidding frenzy on eBay.<\/p>\n<p>Bidding began at just one euro but soared up to 470,050 euros (\u00a3397,000) after 114 offers in all during the ten-day auction.<\/p>\n<p>The final price was around 16 times what most DB18 Dropheads cost.<\/p>\n<p>While today\u2019s MPs rely on private jets and coaches for electioneering, Churchill used his Daimler to hit the campaign trail from 1944 to 1949.<\/p>\n<p>Daimler had intended to build 23 of the cars but only eight were completed before war ended production at its Coventry plant.<\/p>\n<p>The historic motor boasts a 2.5-litre engine, does 0-60mph in 17.9 seconds and has a top speed of 76mph.<\/p>\n<p>The car was sold on eBay by German dealer Fahrwerk Classics after a \u00a3170,000 restoration.<br \/>\nThe Daimler DB18 Drophead Coupi was one of the most advanced cars of its day.<\/p>\n<p>It was sold by the German dealer after its owner, who intended selling it at an Historics auction at Brooklands Museum in Surrey, died unexpectedly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This incredible classic car was used by Sir Winston Churchill during World War Two.
