However, the questions appeared to open a door for those nationalists who want Catalonia to have the structure of a state but remain a part of Spain, possibly along the lines of Puerto Rico and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/catalan-protest.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-58584\" alt=\"\u053b\u057d\u057a\u0561\u0576\u056b\u0561,\u053f\u0561\u057f\u0561\u056c\u0578\u0576\u056b\u0561,\u0561\u0576\u056f\u0561\u056d\u0578\u0582\u0569\u0575\u0561\u0576 \u0570\u0561\u0576\u0580\u0561\u0584\u057e\u0565\" src=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/catalan-protest.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/catalan-protest.jpg 250w, https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/catalan-protest-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon responded to Mas&#8217; announcement, saying a referendum would be illegal and would not be allowed.<\/p>\n<p>Spain&#8217;s Constitution says only the central government in Madrid can call a referendum, and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy recently rejected a request by Mas to allow one. The government has not said what it might do to prevent a ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Polls indicate that Catalans are roughly evenly split on independence.
