{"id":72772,"date":"2014-03-05T20:10:44","date_gmt":"2014-03-05T16:10:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/?p=72772"},"modified":"2014-03-05T20:10:44","modified_gmt":"2014-03-05T16:10:44","slug":"new-york-times-corrects-article-about-12-years-a-slave-161-years-later","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/en\/?p=72772","title":{"rendered":"New York Times corrects article about &#8217;12 Years a Slave&#8217; &#8212; 161 years later"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/12-Years-a-Slave.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-72768\" alt=\"12 Years a Slave\" src=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/12-Years-a-Slave.jpg\" width=\"306\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/12-Years-a-Slave.jpg 306w, https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/12-Years-a-Slave-217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 306px) 100vw, 306px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a correction more than 160 years in the making.<\/p>\n<p>In its Tuesday edition, The New York Times published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/04\/pageoneplus\/corrections-march-4-2014.html\" target=\"_blank\">a correction<\/a> for an article that ran on January 20, 1853.<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper has Hollywood and Twitter to thank for bringing the error to light.<\/p>\n<p>The Times explained that <a href=\"http:\/\/query.nytimes.com\/mem\/archive-free\/pdf?res=9E03EEDC1438E334BC4851DFB7668388649FDE&amp;smid=nytimesarts\" target=\"_blank\">the article in question<\/a> told the story of Solomon Northup, a free African-American man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery.<\/p>\n<p>Northup&#8217;s memoir, &#8220;12 Years a Slave,&#8221; was turned into a movie that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/02\/showbiz\/movies\/oscars-2014\/index.html\">won the best picture Oscar<\/a> at this year&#8217;s Academy Awards on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The problem was that the 1853 article spelled Northup&#8217;s name wrong, in two different ways. It appeared as Northrop in the body of the article and Northrup in the headline.<\/p>\n<p>As the Oscars focused attention on &#8220;12 Years a Slave,&#8221; a Twitter user unearthed the old article from The Times archives, and it spread quickly on social media.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The errors came to light on Monday after a Twitter user pointed out the article in The Times archives,&#8221; the correction said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive2.ankakh.com\/\">\u00a0\u0531\u0576\u056f\u0561\u056d<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s a correction more than 160 years in the making.
