23 Killed in Thailand’s Floods as More Storms Loom

thai-flooding

Thai authorities say floods have killed more than 20 people and affected areas across the country in the past two weeks, while concern is growing there could be a repeat of the devastating floods in 2011.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department says 32 out of 77 provinces have seen flooding since mid-September and 23 people have been killed.

Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi says Thailand is not at risk from the remnants of Typhoon Wutip, which reached the northeast Tuesday. However, he says the country should be ready for other storms.

In 2011, Thailand saw its worst flooding in half a century. More than 800 people were killed and agricultural, industrial and residential lands were devastated over a wide swathe of the country.

Paris Prosecutor Probing Fortune of Assad’s Uncle

Rifaat al-Assad

The Paris prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into the real estate holdings of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s uncle after international watchdogs accused him of corruption.

Sherpa and Transparency International filed a complaint earlier this month, alleging that Rifaat Assad is worth several million euros and that the sum is far beyond what he earned as a Syrian military commander or as the country’s vice president. The complaint alleges that this fortune, including several dozen Paris apartments and a luxurious townhouse, was built by stealing from Syrian public funds and by abusing his power.

The prosecutor’s office opened a preliminary investigation Monday.

In 2011, Rifaat Assad told The Associated Press that he had lost all his money in the stock market and lived off the largesse of his children.

Popes John XXIII and John Paul II to be declared saints in April

wedeman-pope-saints

Popes John XXIII and John Paul II will be declared saints in April, the Vatican said Monday.

The announcement came after Pope Francis met with cardinals to discuss the planned canonizations of two of his predecessors. The ceremony will take place on April 27.

It will be the first time two popes will be canonized at the same time.

To be named a saint involves a series of steps, but the qualifications are straightforward, according to the veteran Vatican analyst John Allen.

“You put a holy life and two miracles together, according to the Catholic system, you’ve got a saint,” he said.

The calls to canonize John Paul II began even before he had been buried. People attending his funeral in 2005 held banners saying “Santo Subito,” short for “make him a saint now.”

Bypassing the normal five-year waiting period, Pope Benedict XVI set in motion the process to canonize his predecessor.

Dozens of students shot dead in their beds as Islamist militants storm through college dorms in northern Nigeria

Gunmen killed at least 40 people today in an attack on a college in northeast Nigeria, witnesses say, in a region where Islamist militants have targeted schools and universities.

Islamist sect Boko Haram has intensified attacks on civilian targets in recent weeks in reaction to a military offensive against its insurgency.

Boko Haram and spin-off Islamist groups like the al Qaeda-linked Ansaru have become the biggest security threat to the nation which is also Africa’s second largest economy and top oil exporter.

Gunmen stormed the College of Agriculture in Yobe state and shot students as they slept in the early hours of this morning, state police commissioner Sanusi Rufai said.

They also set fire to classrooms, a military spokesman in Yobe state, Lazarus Eli, told Agence France-Presse.

One witness counted 40 bodies at the main hospital in Yobe state capital Damaturu, and politicians claim that victims, most of whom were young men, were taken in van loads.

Boko Haram is fighting to overthrow Nigeria’s government to create an Islamic state, and has launched a number of attacks on schools including a raid which killed 27 students and a teacher at a school in Potiskum, a town about 30 miles from the site of today’s attack.

The group’s name translates as ‘Western education is forbidden’ and regard schools as a symbol of Western culture.

Across Nigeria thousands have been killed since Boko Haram launched its uprising against the state in 2009, turning itself from a clerical movement opposed to Western culture into an armed militia with growing links to al Qaeda’s West African wing.

‘Death to America!’ Shoes thrown at Iran’s President Rouhani as country is split over historic call with Obama

Hassan Rouhani

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani arrived home today to shouts of ‘death to America’ from hardline protesters.

While hundreds of Iranians gathered at the airport to cheer his return to the country after a week of UN talks, around 100 others gathered outside to throw eggs and shoes at his car.

The hardline activists also waved a banner and some threw stones, according to Iran’s news agency.

They appeared to be protesting against Rouhani softening relations with the West, and particularly a 15 minute phone call he shared with Barack Obama yesterday.

They spoke through an interpreter in the first direct contact between a U.S. and Iranian President in more than 30 years.

Rouhani has said he wants to end the stand-off between Iran and America over his country’s nuclear programme, which Ian claims is for peaceful purposes but the West has long suspected will be used to make atomic bombs.

Addressing a UN summit on the issue, Rouhani said he would like the dispute to be resolved in ‘months rather than years’ and called for Israel to sign up to a treaty on nuclear weapons.

In return Rouhani has said that he expects all sanctions on his country to be lifted, which have cut oil exports in half, devalued the Iranian currency and crippled the economy.

Dozens Still Missing After Boat Sinks in Indonesia

They had gambled with their lives to journey from as far as Iraq and Lebanon in search of a better life. But for 22 people the wager ended in death off the coast of Indonesia, after their vessel capsized, a government spokesman said Saturday.

Many children lay among the lifeless bodies authorities pulled from the seas of the coast off West Java.

But 28 others emerged alive from the waters and received treatment for minor injuries at a hospital in Cianjur, said Martinus Sitompol, an Indonesian government spokesman.

Rescuers continue to search for 30 more people believed to be on the boat, when it overturned. Their fate is yet uncertain. Many of them likely lie buried far beneath the waves.

Sitompol could only wager a guess why the boat capsized. He said some on the boat were from Iraq and Lebanon.

“It’s possible they ran out of fuel,” he surmised. “It’s possible that they didn’t know how to man or steer the boat.”

There are many ways for overfilled, unseaworthy crafts off the coast of Indonesia to spill the people they were carrying into the ocean. It happens many times a year.

The Australian media said the vessel was headed for Australia’s Christmas Island, a common landing point for such boats.

For some, Australia is the land of their hopes, but the government there has had its fill of capsizing, broken down refuge boats and enacted legislation this year to dash them. It is now forbidden for illegal immigrants arriving by boat to ever live on Australian soil.

Miss Philippines crowned the new Miss World

Miss Philippines crowned the new Miss WorldA new Miss World was crowned Saturday, and though she competed as Miss Philippines, she hails from the United States.

Megan Young, 23, an aspiring filmmaker, took the top honor at the competition, held in Bali, Indonesia.

Miss France, Marine Lorphelin, and Miss Ghana, Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, were second and third runners up, respectively.

Young was born in the United States and moved to the Philippines at age 10, according to her biography.

The new Miss World is a college student who has appeared on screen as an actress and presenter since she was 15.

Protesters in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, denounced the event.

In an attempt to appease religious concerns, the pageant scrapped the swimsuit competition and replaced it with less-revealing beachwear attire.

Israel Breaks up Gaza Strip Demonstration

PALESTINIAN-ISRAEL-GAZA-CONFLICT

The Israeli military says it has dispersed a demonstration of Palestinians who had marched to the Israeli border in the northern Gaza Strip.

It says troops fired tear gas to break up a crowd of around 300 who had entered the immediate border area, which it considers off limits.

Israel, which withdrew from Gaza in 2005, considers the Hamas-run territory to be a hostile entity. It has carried out two large military operations there in response to militant rocket attacks in recent years. The border area has been largely quiet since a weeklong Israeli military offensive last November.

Friday’s demonstration marked the 13th anniversary of the outbreak of the second Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation.

Small demonstrations also took place in east Jerusalem and the West Bank.

Now we understand women’s pain! Men teeter around in stilettos to help raise awareness of domestic violence

men donned high heels and teetered around Toronto

Hundreds of men donned high heels and teetered around Toronto today to help raise awareness of violence against women.

Organizers of the annual charity event Walk A Mile In Her Shoes, now in its fifth year in the Canadian city, warned all participants to ‘bring band aids’ to stop their newly-acquired stilettos from rubbing.

Spectators uploaded photographs of the spectacle to Twitter, showing men wobbling along the mile-long course wearing everything from neon pink court shoes to chunky platforms.

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: The International Men’s March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence was started in California in 2001.

The attention-grabbing scene of men wearing women’s shoes was designed to create a dialogue about an issue that is often hidden from public view and forgotten about as a result.

In 2009 the event spread to Toronto where it has since raised around $400,000.

Todd Minerson who helped to organize the event and serves as the executive director of White Ribbon, one of the largest men’s anti-violence programs, says there were almost 1,000 walkers from as young as 11 to as old as 70 in last year’s walk.

The goal this year is to raise $125,000 to fund programs that help men and boys understand the issue of violence against women in Canada.

Russian Troops Kill 5 Militants in Dagestan

russia kills militants

Russia’s main anti-terror agency says its forces have killed five suspected militants during a raid in the restive province of Dagestan in southern Russia.

The National Anti-Terrorist Committee said in a statement that the militants were killed Friday in Derbent on the Caspian Sea. It said that security forces acting on a tip surrounded a house where the militants were holed up. They refused to surrender and were killed in a gunfight.

The Committee said that one of the suspects was the leader of a group of militants suspected of staging a series of attacks on police and other authorities and running an extortion racket targeting local businesses.

Dagestan has become the epicenter of an Islamic rebellion that spread across Russia’s North Caucasus region after two separatist wars in Chechnya.

Family in legal battle to keep their pet TIGERS: Man who rescued big cats from a travelling circus is told they are too much of a public danger

A Brazilian animal lover who rescued two tigers from a travelling circus has become locked in a legal battle after officials told him to give them up claiming they pose a public threat.

Ary Borges saved brothers Dan and Tom from a life of cruelty in 2005 and brought them to his home in Maringa, southern Brazil.

As cubs they slept in his daughters’ beds and ambled about his garden with his other pets, two lions, a monkey, and a pet Chihuahau named Little.

He has since used the brothers to breed an ambush of nine tigers, all of whom now live with Mr Borges and his family.

But now they are fully-grown, wildlife officials say the 700-pound beasts are too dangerous to keep in an industrial neighbourhood of this southern Brazil city and that Mr Borges used them to breed other tigers illegally.

‘Sadly there are so many animals dying in zoos that have no oversight,’ said Mr Borges. ‘My animals are treated extremely well … we’re preserving and conserving the species.

‘We have a great team of veterinarians. We give them only the best, but we’re being persecuted.’

It also wants his caretaker license confiscated and to obtain the cats. Borges appealed and the matter is pending before a federal court. The agency declined repeated requests for comment.

‘My father would die or kill himself if these tigers are taken away,’ Uyara said. ‘They’re everything to us, they’re my brothers. We’ve lived with them day and night for eight years.’

At least 3 dead after Mumbai building collapse; dozens feared trapped

india-building-collapse1

At least three people have been killed after a five-story residential building collapsed in the Indian financial hub of Mumbai early Friday, authorities said.

Dozens of people are feared to be trapped in the wreckage of the city’s latest building disaster.

“It’s a pancake collapse,” said Sachidanand Gawde, deputy commandant at the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). “The exact number of those trapped under the debris is not known,” he said.

Around 40 people are feared to be buried in the rubble, CNN’s sister network IBN reported, citing the disaster officials.

Of the 15 people recovered from the ruins so far, three have died and 12 are being treated for their injuries at the city’s JJ Hospital, Gawde said.

Several buildings in the Mumbai area have crumbled this year, one of them with disastrous consequences.

Housing rights groups say many old buildings in the city are rundown and neglected, while newer ones are often built using substandard materials and have structural problems.

People live in them because they don’t have a choice — in Mumbai, demand for housing far exceeds supply. About 65% of the population is estimated to live in slums, the groups say.

Russia, Belarus Hold Joint War Games

lukashenko-putin

The West 2013 exercise conducted Thursday near the city of Grodno in western Belarus and in Russia’s westernmost Kaliningrad region also involved more than 500 armored vehicles and about 90 aircraft along with ships of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

The two armies have regularly conducted joint maneuvers, Thursday’s exercise being the biggest so far.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko attended the exercise along with his nine-year old son, who donned full combat fatigues.

Lindsay Lohan’s Half Sister Spends $25,000 on Plastic Surgery to Look Like the Star

lindsay-lohan-s-half-sister-spends-25000-on-plastic-surgery-to-look-like-the-star

Lindsay Lohan‘s half sister Ashley Horn has spent $25,000 on plastic surgery to look more like her sister. Ashley debuts her new look and elaborates on the procedures in the latest issue of In Touch magazine.

Ashley reveals. “My goal was to look like Lindsay in her good days, when she was around 18, 19 years old,” she adds. After Ashley underwent the surgeries, she admits to the magazine, “I’m hotter than Lindsay! I have no problem saying that.”

Ashley, however, says that she is not like her estranged sister in terms of personalities. “I’m not Lindsay. I wasn’t raised in that family,” she insists. Ashley also says that she does not have any relationship with the Lohans and she does not want one. “I don’t drink, do drugs or party. I like being a responsible person,” Ashley explains.

“It’s disgusting and totally crazy!” Lindsay’s father Michael tells Popdust.

“It’s totally shocking. Why on earth would she do something like this? It’s just sick and twisted. She’s only 18 years old and she’s undergoing plastic surgery? She was a really pretty girl in her own right, why would she do something like this?” Lindsay’s father Michael says further.

“I suspect Kristi is behind the decision for Ashley to undergo all this surgery purely for publicity purposes” he adds.

Twitter launches emergency notification service

twitter- alert

A new service from Twitter allows government agencies and non-governmental organizations to send emergency messages directly to users’ phones during natural disasters or times of crisis, the company announced Wednesday.

Users that sign up for the service called Twitter Alerts will receive “critical information” via a text message or push notification when an organization marks a tweet as an “alert,” according to the Twitter Alerts website.

More than 60 organizations have signed up for the new system, including the emergency management departments of Louisiana, Florida, New York and Colorado as well as the American Red Cross and FEMA, said Twitter. International organizations such as The World Health Organization and the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department have signed up.

Users can customize which organizations they receive alerts from through the service’s setup menu.

The alert system comes on the heels of Twitter being used by government agencies and news organizations to communicate with the public during recent crises such as Superstorm Sandy and the Boston Marathon bombings.

Divers Find Human Remains Near Italian Shipwreck

costa concordiaDivers have spotted human remains near the shipwrecked Costa Concordia off an Italian island, and authorities say DNA tests will determine if they are those of two victims whose bodies were never found.

The search for the last of the 32 dead resumed after the capsized cruise liner was rotated upward last week in a salvage operation 20 months after the Concordia crashed into a reef off GiglioIsland on Jan. 13, 2012. Civil Protection chief Franco Gabrielli told reporters on Giglio that relatives of the two victims — a female Italian passenger and a male Indian waiter — were notified after divers saw remains Thursday morning.

The remains were spotted in the sea near the central part of the ship, where survivors had said the two were last seen.

Russian Court Jails 3 Greenpeace Team Members

greenpeace-activistA Russian court on Thursday jailed a photographer and two Greenpeace activists who were part of the 30-member Greenpeace team protesting near an oil platform in the Arctic last week.

The court on Thursday denied bail and sanctioned a two-month jail term for photographer Denis Sinyakov, Greenpeace spokesman Roman Dolgov and campaigner Paul Ryzincki, pending the investigation. The first two men are Russian, while Ryzincki is Canadian. No charges have been brought against them yet.

The judge has yet to rule in the cases of the other 27 people.

Although Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday the activists aren’t pirates, he defended their detention.

The Arctic Sunrise sails under the Dutch flag. The Netherlands has asked Russia to release the ship and its crew immediately, explain the legal basis for its actions, the exact location where the ship was seized and any charges against the activists.

Nissan Recalls 908,900 Vehicles for Sensor Problem

nissan

Nissan Motor Co. recalled 908,900 vehicles around the world Thursday for defective accelerator sensors that could cause the engine to stall.

The recall affects the Serena minivan, Infiniti M luxury model, X-trail sport utility vehicle and other models, the automaker said. No accidents have been reported related to the problem.

Most of the vehicles being recalled are in Japan. Others are in North America, Europe and Oceania, Yokohama-based Nissan said.

Sensors, manufactured in Japan, can malfunction, causing the vehicle to slow down and at times stop, it said.

Putin: Greenpeace Activists Aren’t Pirates

RUSSIA-GREENPEACE_Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Greenpeace activists apprehended after trying to scale an offshore oil platform aren’t pirates, but defended the detention saying Coast Guard officers had no way of knowing who they were.

Two members of the group were detained Sept. 18 in their attempt to scale the Arctic platform. The Coast Guard seized Greenpeace’s ship the next day and towed it with 30 activists aboard, to Murmansk, where they are being questioned by investigators considering piracy charges.

It was unclear whether Putin’s comments might foreshadow leniency for the activists, who could face 10-15 years in prison if convicted of piracy.

The detained activists are from 18 countries, including Russia, and a long detention or trials could draw unwelcome international attention to Russia’s tough policy against protests.

Greenpeace insisted that under international law Russia had no right to board its ship and has no grounds to charge its activists with piracy.

Thieves steal £1m of gold bars from Air France flight weeks after airline was used to smuggle £170m worth of pure cocaine

gold-France-thievesThieves have taken £1million worth of gold bars from an Air France plane leading to accusations of an inside job.

The solid gold ingots were part of a multi-million pound cargo of nine cases containing 300 kilograms of gold.

Detectives said that 44 kilos of gold ingots were taken from a plane travelling from the French capital to Zurich last Thursday.

They were being handled by the American Brink’s secure transportation company, which regularly transfers valuables on the same route.

The nine cases set off from Charles de Gaulle airport but only seven cases reached the tarmac on the other side, police said.

The news comes just two weeks after £170million worth of pure cocaine was found being shipped from South America to Paris on board another Air France aircraft.
