Hitler’s bodyguard who was one of the first men to find the Fuhrer dead in his bunker dies aged 96

Rochus MischThe man who served as Adolf Hitler’s bodyguard has died aged 96.

Rochus Misch was by the Nazi leader’s side for five years throughout the Second World War.

It is thought he died on Thursday following a short illness. Misch travelled with Hitler from bunker to bunker throughout the 1940s.

Following a German defeat on January 16, 1945, Misch and the rest of Hitler’s personal staff moved into the Führerbunker in Berlin.

He was told not to leave the bunker for any significant period of time until the end of the war and handled all of the direct communication from the underground area.

After Hitler killed himself on April 30 1945, Misch was one of the first to find the Nazi leader’s body.

He fled the bunker and was captured by the Russian Red Army – but was released in 1954 and lived in Berlin, only two miles away from the bunker, until he died.

Before his death he spoke several times about his experience of working with the Nazi leader.

In a 2005 interview with the Associated Press, Misch said Hitler, who he referred to as ‘boss’, was ‘a very normal man’.

Misch said, ‘He was no brute. He was no monster. He was no superman.’

He told newspaper Berliner Kurier that, with most of the letters he receives asking for autographs, it was ‘no longer possible’ to reply because of his age.

He said: ‘[The letters] come from Korea, from Knoxville, Tennessee, from Finland and Iceland – and not one has a bad word to say.’

Welcome to the scariest job interview ever! LG terrifies applicants by faking massive meteor crash through ‘window’ that was actually an ultra high-definition TV screen

Applicants for a job interview with LG Electronics in Chile had the scare of their lives when the company played a cruel prank on them that has been turned into an amusing TV advertisement.

To promote just how life-like images appear on the company’s 82-inch ‘Ultra HD’ TV, LG created a fake office in which one of its screen was positioned to look like a window.

Four unlucky applicants – two men and two women – were then filmed in the fake office being interviewed for a job with the company.

To begin with, the interview process seems perfectly normal as the interviewer shakes their hand and starts to look at their resume.

But then the cityscape outside starts to change, the blue sky turns black, a meteor emerges from the clouds and suddenly the city explodes.

The combination of high-def images and sound is – apparently – so realistic that each of the four interviewees freaks out, panicking and screaming as they see what they think is their city being destroyed.

Next the lights go out and the poor unsuspecting victims are left in the dark for a couple of minutes to add to the drama.

When the lights go back on, the door suddenly opens and in walks the LG team behind the prank to congratulation the poor unsuspecting targets.

This type of marketing is called a prankvertisement and since the clip appeared on YouTube on Monday it has been viewed more than 700,000 times.

Hitler’s swastika ring pocketed by an American troop who raided his Bavarian retreat in 1945 expected to fetch £70,000 at auction

The ring - Adolf HitlerA rare Nazi bling-ring once owned by Adolf Hitler is going up for auction in Maryland next week and is expected to fetch at least £70,000.

The ‘Hitler Ring’ is made of silver and was originally plated with gold, though not much is left after 75 years.

On the ring is a huge swastika that is supported by other swastikas and swords. The piece is crowned by a large ruby and mounted in a silver globe which rests on an elaborate foot, also with a swastika.

Whether the dictator ever wore the kitschy item is unknown, but the fact that is was made for him will be enough to drive prices sky high for collectors of Nazi militaria when bidding begins next week.
It is being offered for sale by the Alexander Historical Auctions House in Maryland and comes with documents come with it testifying that it was made for the Fuhrer.

HitlerThe ring was crafted by the master goldsmith Karl Berthold who was a fanatical Nazi and kicked Jewish craftsmen out of his business in Frankfurt shortly after the regime came to power in 1933 – long before laws forbidding them from working came into place.

The ring was found at Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s mountain retreat in Bavaria, in 1945 by American troops.

One of the soldiers pocketed it as a souvenir before selling it on. It was owned by several collectors over the years, the last of whom died two years ago and whose grandson is now selling it.

Stubbs the cat, Alaska town mayor, mauled by dog

stubbs-the-cat-mayor-of-talkeetnaHe’s a beloved mayor, who’s held the top office in Talkeetna, Alaska, for 16 years. So imagine the townfolks’ shock when he was attacked.

Brutally mauled.

By a dog.

Oh, did we mention, this mayor’s a cat?

Mayor Stubbs, a yellow tabby with more responsibility than your average cat, survived — but is in bad shape.

A punctured lung. A fractured sternum. A 5-inch gash on his side.

Doctors took out a chest tube Tuesday, and he was breathing on his own for the first time since the weekend attack.

The story of how Mayor Stubbs rose to power made international news after he was found in a box full of kittens in front of Nagley’s General Store in town.

Stubbs was strolling about the town Saturday night as he does every night, when an unleashed dog came running across the street and bit into him.

Stubbs’ medical bills could top $2,000, Stec said.

‘It’s a cat – from the rear’: Russian President Putin shows rarely seen fun-loving side as he draws animal’s bottom for giggling students

President PutinThe Russian President showed off his skills with a classroom sketch on a white board at a middle school in the Siberian Kurgan.

Pupils were left giggling when the president revealed that he had drawn a cat’s behind for the class.

‘This is for you to remember’  he said, before carrying on with his sketch, the Huffington Post reports.

When a pupil asked what the drawing was, Putin replied: ‘It’s a cat – from the rear’, causing the class to collpase into giggles.

It comes days after the Russian President displayed a less flippant attitude to art, when police seized a painting of him wearing women’s underwear from a gallery, saying the satirical display had broken the law.

Japan and Turkey: On ‘Comfort Women’ and Genocide

By Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

The sleepy town of Glendale became the center of a major international controversy on July 9, when the City Council approved a memorial to ‘comfort women’ — a euphemism to describe up to 200,000 young females who were forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese army during its occupation of Korea and neighboring countries before and during World War II.

The City Council, after hearing conflicting testimonies from members of the local Japanese and Korean communities, approved with a 4 to 1 vote the installation of a monument in Glendale in honor of ‘comfort women.’ At the unveiling ceremony of the monument, council members Ara Najarian and Zareh Sinanyan expressed sympathy for the plight of “comfort women,’ as their own Armenian ancestors had suffered from mass atrocities in Turkey.

Concerned by the parallels drawn between the genocide of Armenians by Turkey during World War I and the Japanese military’s sexual enslavement of ‘comfort women’ during World War II, the Consulate of Japan in Los Angeles sought a meeting with the Armenian National Committee of America to present its government’s position on this issue.

During Deputy Consul General Masahiro Suga’s meeting with ANCA, it became evident that the Japanese government had been far more forthcoming regarding the crimes committed by the imperial Japanese army than the Turkish government was on the Armenian Genocide. Mr. Suga explained that Japan had recognized its responsibility for violating the rights of ‘comfort women’ by issuing an apology, and offering compensation to the victims.

Nevertheless, the ‘comfort women’ remain dissatisfied with Japan’s acts of “atonement,” accusing Japanese officials of making conflicting announcements on this issue. Most ‘comfort women’ have also rejected the offered financial compensation, claiming that it was partially provided by private sources and not the government of Japan. In 2007, the U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution in support of ‘comfort women,’ urging the Japanese government to “formally acknowledge, apologize, and accept historical responsibility in a clear and unequivocal manner for its Imperial Armed Forces’ coercion of young women into sexual slavery.”

To find out how Japan’s reaction to the issue of ‘comfort women’ differed from the Turkish government’s denialist stand on the Armenian Genocide, I interviewed Jun Niimi, the Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles. He fondly spoke about his “affinity” toward Armenians developed during his 1995-98 service at the Japanese Embassy in Tehran, and his subsequent visits to Armenia, while stationed at the Embassy of Japan in Moscow.

Regarding the Japanese government’s position on ‘comfort women,’ Mr. Niimi explained that Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama issued a statement in 1995, expressing “deep remorse” and “heartfelt apology.” Japan also “provided atonement through the Asian Women’s Fund.”

Turning to the differences in the reaction of Turkey to the Armenian Genocide and Japan’s to the abuse of ‘comfort women,’ Consul General Niimi made three points:

“The government of Japan is well aware of the tragedy of the Armenian people at the beginning of last century. We would like to express our deepest condolences and sympathy to the victims. It is our strong belief that this kind of tragedy should never be repeated. The second point is regarding the position of the Turkish government. This is about another country’s position. Even though we are aware of that atrocity, yet, we are not in a position to grasp the details of precisely what happened a century ago in that area. So we cannot make a comment on the Turkish government’s position. But, I would like to repeat that we are aware of the tragedy and would like to express our sympathy and condolences. And the third point is that, regardless of the position of the Turkish government, the Japanese government’s position on the issue of ‘comfort women’ is that it expressed apology and remorse and made efforts to extend support to former ‘comfort women.’”

I informed the Consul General that Japan’s position on the Armenian Genocide is not much different from that of Turkey. I asked Mr. Niimi to relay to his country’s Foreign Ministry that Japan’s lack of acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide reinforces the skepticism of those who question the Japanese government’s sincerity in dealing fairly with the issue of ‘comfort women.’

In response, the Consul General of Japan expressed his understanding that “the word tragedy doesn’t sound good to you, because it’s genocide.” He promised to convey to his government “the sentiments of the Armenian community” on this issue.

Russian girl, 8, orphaned after her ENTIRE family is wiped out by deadly gas caused by rotting potatoes in the cellar

Maria ChelyshevaAn eight-year-old Russian girl has been orphaned after her entire family was wiped out by deadly gas caused from rotting potatoes.

Grief-stricken Maria Chelysheva lost her father, mother, brother and grandmother who were killed one by one after entering a cellar where they stored potatoes for the winter.

Relatives are caring for the girl who is inconsolable over her loss.

Her father, respected law professor Mikhail Chelyshev, 42, was first to enter the cellar, not realising the potatoes had become seriously rotten.

He fainted from the noxious fumes, and soon afterwards died, say police.

When he failed to re-appear, his worried wife Anastasia, 38, went to look for him in the dark and was also overcome by the poisonous gas.

Next the couple’s 18 year old son Georgy went in search of his parents, only to suffer the same tragic fate as his mother and father after inhaling the highly toxic fumes.

Anastasia’s mother Iraida, 68, called a neighbour to say there was something suspicious and to plead for help.

But before assistance arrived, she also went into the cellar, suffocated from the gas, and collapsed and died like the others, say police.

It is understood that as she went in, she left the door open, allowing the fumes to disperse.

When Maria entered the cellar, she found the bodies of her whole family on the cellar floor.

The shocking case was at Laishevo, a town near Kazan, in the Russian republic of Tatarstan on the Volga River.

Relatives and friends are appealing for cash to support the girl.

A memorial service for Professor Chelyshev was held in the marble hall of  Kazan Federal University, where he was head of the department of civil and business law.

Israel and the U.S. carried out a joint missile testIsrael and the U.S. today carried out a joint missile test in the Mediterranean, firing two rockets which later fell into the sea.

News of the secret drill came this morning when the Russian defence ministry reporting that a radar system had detected the launch of two ‘ballistic objects’.

Later today, Israel’s defence ministry revealed that it had conducted a test of missile designed to be used as a target in an anti-missile system funded by the U.S.

A Russian official said that the launch was detected at 6.16am GMT by an early warning station near the Black Sea, designed to detect missiles fired from Europe and Iran.

A spokesman for the U.S. Navy said that American forces did not fire any missiles, but did not confirm whether or not the U.S. was involved with the Israeli operation.

‘No missiles were fired from U.S. ships in the Mediterranean,’ he said.

Officials within Syria said there were no signs of any missile attacks in Damascus.

South Africa President Pleased Mandela Is Home

mandelaSouth Africa’s president said Tuesday that he was pleased Nelson Mandela had gone home from a hospital, saying it indicated the progress that the anti-apartheid leader had made even though he remains in critical condition.

An ambulance returned 95-year-old Mandela to his Johannesburg house on Sunday, and the office of President Jacob Zuma said he will receive the same level of care there that he did in the hospital, administered by the same doctors.

“He remains critical but stable, responding to treatment,” Zuma said in a meeting with journalists in Pretoria, the South African capital. “I think we feel very good that he reached a point where the doctors who were treating him felt he could now leave the hospital to his home, which indicates the progress he had made.”

Mandela was admitted to the hospital on June 8 for what the government described as a recurring lung infection. Legal papers filed by his family said he was on life support.

UN: Iran Exile Camp in Iraq Unsafe After 52 Killed

mek1_0The United Nations mission to Iraq says a camp north of Baghdad where 52 Iranian dissidents were killed this week is unsafe and is urging Iraqi officials to do more to protect dozens of remaining residents.

The statement Tuesday follows a visit by U.N. officials to Camp Ashraf the previous day. It says members of the delegation saw the bodies of 52 victims with apparent gunshot wounds, confirming death tolls provided by backers of the exiles and an Iraqi official.

Before the killings, Camp Ashraf had been home to about 100 followers of the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, an Iranian dissident group that opposes Tehran’s clerical regime.

The MEK blames Iraqi security forces for the killings. Iraq denies that, and some Iraqi officials say there was an internal camp dispute.

Zuma’s office denies reports Nelson Mandela home from hospital

mandela2The South African president’s office said Saturday that Nelson Mandela remains hospitalized, contradicting earlier reports that he had returned home.

Two sources close to Mandela had told CNN Saturday that he had returned to his Johannesburg home after a long hospital stay.

After similar reports by various media outlets, the president ‘s office issued a statement.

“The presidency has noted incorrect media reports that former President Nelson Mandela has been discharged from hospital,” the statement said. “Madiba is still in hospital in Pretoria, and remains in a critical but stable condition. At times his condition becomes unstable, but he responds to medical interventions.”

Venezuelan president ridiculed after accidentally saying Christ multiplied bread and penises instead of fish

Nicholas MaduroVenezuelan president Nicolas Maduro appeared to make a mistake of Biblical proportions this week – when he muddled a well-known religious quote and said Christ multiplied loaves and ‘penises’.
Maduro made the unfortunate error during a speech on education at the
Miranda stadium, in the country’s capital, Caracas.
Referring to the iconic story of when Christ multiplied fish and loaves to feed the populace, Maduro said his government would help expand education in the country, ‘school by school, child by child, high school by high school, community by community — to embed ourselves in there.
‘To multiply ourselves like Christ multiplied the penises — sorry, the fish — and the bread.’
The Spanish word for ‘penises’ (penes) is just one letter away from the word for ‘fish’ (peces).
Maduro took over as interim president of Venezuela following the death of Hugo Chavez on March 5.
Despite only being in power for five months, Maduro has courted controversy on more than one occasion.
He has been blamed for a toilet paper shortage throughout the country, apparently slept in Chavez’s mausoleum, has made a number of anti-gay slurs and offered asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden.

Terminally-ill Simpsons creator who has vowed to GIVE AWAY his fortune to charity before he dies tells how he has been inundated with time wasters

Sam Simon1The producer of The Simpsons who revealed in July that he is dying of colon cancer has received countless offers from people interesting in his money.

Since word got out about Sam Simon’s cancer and his desire to give away his vast fortune he has heard from countless people online asking to help rid him of his sizable wealth.

‘Some people just want a million dollars. Or help with college tuition. And the rest have business propositions,’ he laughed. ‘Like that should be my legacy: to lose money on your movie or your moisturizer line.’

Simon created the hit cartoon alongside Matt Groening in 1991. He technically retired from The Simpsons in 1993, but still receives tens of millions in royalties every season.

In November Simon was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer after a year of inconclusive tests and mysterious discomfort.

Having defied that diagnosis’ original death sentence – he was given three to six months to live – Simon continues to push ahead with no whiff of ‘Why me?’

The 58-year-old fervent philanthropist is spending his final months funding projects that feed homeless people and save animals from being killed in animal shelters.

‘I’m supporting the charities that I supported during my lifetime,’ he states, ‘and I want to continue to do that.’

Although Simon remained the least-known of the three creators, by many accounts he was the most hands-on.

Among his charitable efforts, he established the Sam Simon Foundation, which rescues dogs from animal shelters and trains them to assist disabled veterans and the hard-of-hearing.

Simon’s largesse carries over to humans, too, including a Los Angeles food bank feeding 200 families each day in Simon style: with a vegan menu.

Portugal Asks for 2 More Planes to Fight Wildfires

Wildfires are scorching large areas of forest in Portugal and the country has asked other European nations to send two more water-dropping aircraft to help battle the blazes.

Jorge Dias, spokesman for Portugal’s National Civil Protection Authority, said Friday that France and Spain have each sent three Canadair planes designed for dropping water on wildfires, but more are needed.

Some 1,300 firefighters were fighting six major blazes in the north of Portugal amid continuing hot weather and high winds.

The two biggest wildfires were in dense, hilly woodland near Viseu, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) north of Lisbon, the capital.

More than 900 firefighters and 288 vehicles were deployed at those blazes.
