1Հույն ուսուցիչները գործադուլի չեն դուրս գաGreek school teachers early on Thursday abandoned plans to hold a strike during university entry exams after the government enacted an emergency decree to force them back to work.
“There are colleagues facing dismissal, we don’t want families to cry and homes to shut,” Nikos Papachristos, head of the main teachers union OLME, told To Vima radio.
A vote by the union late on Wednesday failed to secure the necessary majority to pursue the strike, which was to begin on Friday.
The country’s main unions also refused to agree to OLME’s request to hold a general strike on Friday to support the teachers’ labour action.

Six Americans Killed in Kabul Car Bomb Attack

ap_Afghanistan_kabul_suicide_bomber_debris_thg_130515_wgSix Americans — two soldiers and four civilian contractors — are among at least 14 people killed in a massive car bomb blast in Kabul this morning, according to U.S. and Afghan officials.

More than 30 Afghan civilians, including a number of children, were wounded.

The attack happened just after 8 a.m. The bomber drove a car filled with explosives directly into a military convoy as it drove through the city. The explosion was so powerful it reduced a series of vehicles to piles of twisted, mangled metal, and set nearby buildings on fire. The scene was quickly secured by NATO troops, as fires smoldered on the freshly blackened street. Some of the bodies were so badly burned they were difficult to identify.

The militant group Hezb-Islami, run by notorious Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, quickly claimed responsibility, saying they targeted a convoy carrying American military advisers. A statement by the group’s spokesperson says it has formed a special cell to carry out attacks on U.S. targets

The term of arrest for Ilgar Mamedov Extended another Three Months

Ադրբեջանում REAL շարժման առաջնորդի ձերբակալության ժամկետը նորից երկարNasimi District Court today, extended another three months to Ilgar Mamedov arrest term, the leader of  “Republican Alternative” Movement  (REAL), who is accused of organizing riots in the Ismailli region on January 23-24.

Mamedov was arrested on February 4, held for two months, and then the arrest was extended for another two months. Thus, the total period of detention during the investigation will be extended until September 4.

According to the lawyer Cavad Cavadli, in a sign of protest against the illegal arrest Mamedov, refused to stand up when the judge came in.

The investigation motivated the detention term extension by needing time to question additional witnesses.  However, Mamedov said that the real reason for his arrest and term extension term is  to remove him from participating in the country’s political life.

The lawyer, Cavadli, also pointed out the invalidity of extending the period of detention.

Mamedov has been charged under Articles 233 (organization of actions that lead to violations of public order) and 315.2 (resistance to authority by force, causing a threat to life and health.) In late April, a heavier one, 2201(organization of mass disorders.), replaced the charge Article 233

On April 9, the European Court of Human Rights adopted Mamedov’s case for consideration, and has began to communicate with the Azerbaijani government.—16D06–

Plane crashes as pilot tries to land in Nepal injuring all 21 passengers and leaving four in a critical condition A plane crashed while trying to land at a mountain airstrip in northern

p2Nepal early today, injuring all 21 people on board. Four of the injured are in critical condition, police officer Bhim Bahadur Chand said. No one was killed in the crash. Nine passengers are Japanese tourists, and the three crew members and the other passengers are all Nepali. The plane belonging to state-owned Nepal Airlines was trying to land at Jomsom airport, some 125 miles northwest of Katmandu, when it crashed on the banks of Kaligandaki river. The injured were rushed to the local hospital, and those with serious injuries are being airlifted to nearby Pokhara town for treatment. The area is popular with foreign trekkers visiting the Mount Annapurna area and Hindu pilgrims visiting the revered Muktinath temple. Fifteen people were killed last May when a plane crashed while attempting to land at the same airport. The lure of the Himalayas attracts more than 100,000 trekkers, including 40,000 Brits, each year to Nepal. Visitor numbers to Everest have doubled since the end of the civil war there in 2006 – but plane crashes have become worryingly frequent in the Asian country. Pilots say they are under too much pressure from their bosses during busy periods and that the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) isn’t capable of addressing the problems undermining safety. Some experts believe that one or more of Nepal’s domestic airlines will soon be placed on the EU’s blacklist.

The wet carpet! Leonardo DiCaprio is among the host of stars left drenched as the Cannes Film Festival Opening Ceremony is hit by rain

c6It’s hailed as one of the most glamorous events in the showbiz calendar, but even the French Riviera can’t escape the unseasonably dreary spring weather.

The Hollywood elite were left with damp gowns after the Cannes Film Festival’s opening ceremony was showered by rain and hit by windy weather ruining their well-planned red carpet looks.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Nicole Kidman were among the A List stars who were left drenched and clutching onto umbrellas for dear life on Wednesday night as they made their way across the sodden red carpet.

But as the event continued, so did the outpouring of rain, with stars including Carey Mulligan, Freida Pinto, Nicole Kidman and Georgia May Jagger all needing helpers to hold umbrellas over them.

And Leonardo’s Great Gatsby co-star Carey Mulligan experienced the difficulty of trying to remain glamorous in torrential rain.

The actress was hit on the head by an umbrella as she prepared to walk the red carpet.

Several men with umbrellas crowded around her limo to keep her dry as she walked the few steps from the vehicle to the sodden red carpet.

On the dry section of carpet Carey posed with her leading men Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire.

‘There were so many people around me as I got out of the car that I couldn’t move and I got hit on the head by an umbrella.

‘I suddenly went ‘What the xxxx’ and I didn’t realise there was a TV camera in my face recording everything’ she chuckled as she told the Mail.

Even so, she still looked very pretty in a pink couture Dior gown.

Meanwhile, Nicole Kidman said the storms that soaked the Cannes Film Festival Red Carpet didn’t bother her.

‘It’s only rain. It’s pouring out there but I love the rain. I love it,’ she told the Mail.

Over the next 12 days, dozens of the world’s most artistically ambitious films will premiere on Cannes’ global stage. But Wednesday was a day for blockbusters – both the big-budget Gatsby and Hollywood’s most accomplished director of spectacle: Steven Spielberg.

Spielberg is serving as jury president at this year’s Cannes. This year’s jury is an intimidating, starry bunch, including Nicole Kidman, Ang Lee and Christoph Waltz.

Luhrmann’s 3D adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is this year’s festival opener, a choice that surprised many since the film opened last week in North America. Cannes typically takes precedence over release schedules, but Gatsby sails to the Croisette after a robust weekend haul of $51.1million.

After Luhrmann noted in a news conference that the film had pushed Fitzgerald’s novel to the top of the bestseller list (selling more copies in a week than in the author’s lifetime), DiCaprio added with a grin: ‘And a little film adaptation is doing quite well at the box office.’

Gatsby plays out of competition at the festival, but Spielberg should have his hands full with a slate lacking any obvious favourite. Internationally-respected filmmakers such as Roman Polanski (Venus in Fur), Asghar Farhadi (The Past) and Jim Jarmusch (Only Lovers Left Alive) are to premiere their films in competition.

Protesters Close Libyan Oil Terminal, Halt Exports

A Libyan oil ministry official says protesters have forced the closure of an oil terminal in the east of the country for the second time in six months, disrupting exports.

Deputy Oil and Gas Minister Omar al-Shakmak says dozens of demonstrators closed the terminal of Zueitina on Wednesday, demanding the Libyan National Oil Corporation make good on pledges to hire 340 people.

This is the second time protesters have closed the terminal, through which flows 20 percent of Libya’s 1.6 million barrels a day of exports.

Zueitina is located 870 kilometers (540 miles) east of Tripoli. The first closure took place in December.

Chinese police destroy £21million of counterfeit designer goods… just another £20BILLION to go!

Police destroy 200m Yuan worth of counterfeit goods, Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China - 14 May 2013Chinese police destroyed £21 million of counterfeit designer goods today in a lavish publicity stunt aimed at showing the world they are cracking down on the illegal trade.

Fake wine, cigarettes, handbags and cosmetics were all thrown on a fire in Guiyang, southwest China’s Guizhou Province.

But authorities have a long way to go – a recent UN report revealed a staggering 75 per cent of all fake goods seized worldwide from 2008 to 2010 were primarily from China.

The UN report stated that counterfeit goods accounted for one third of the organised crime in East Asia and the Pacific is worth approximately $90bn (£58bn).

Most counterfeits fall into four categories: CDs and DVDs; accessories, watches and footwear; tobacco products; and textiles.

Last year an entire city in China literally shut up shop when nearly all of its stores closed after it was falsely reported that officials were planning a clampdown on the sale of counterfeit products.

Officials in Shenyang city were forced to beg store owners to reopen after 95 per cent of shops remain closed.

In November police arrested 73 people suspected of manufacturing and selling almost 1 million fake luxury bags in China.

The Ministry of Public Security said police seized more than 20,000 fake Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Coach bags and closed 37 sites where the forgery ring made or sold the bags.

Police said the ring sold more than 960,000 bags and exported many to the United States and Middle East.

Police on horseback charge Palestinian protesters in Jerusalem as tens of thousands march to commemorate 65th anniversary of creation of Israel

i5Israeli police on horseback charged Palestinians as tens of thousands marched in protest to mark the 65th anniversary of the Jewish state’s creation.

There were violent clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinians waving their national flag to commemorate ‘Nakba Day’ – or ‘the day of the catastrophe’.

Every May 15, Palestinians hold rallies to protest against their mass displacement during the Arab-Israeli war in 1948.

Across the West Bank, sirens wailed at noon for 65 seconds to commemorate the 65 years since the ‘nakba.’

Thousands marched in Ramallah from the grave of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to the city center. Many wore black in a sign of mourning, holding Palestinian flags and large keys symbolizing the homes they left behind.

‘The right of return will not die,’ chanted the protesters. Schools closed at midday and parents brought their children to the demonstration.

Rallies were elsewhere in the West Bank as well, and in several places demonstrators throwing rocks clashed with Israeli security forces, who responded with tear gas, Israel’s military said. Near the volatile city of Hebron, a fire bomb hit at an Israeli military vehicle, causing it to overturn and injuring four soldiers.

In east Jerusalem, Israeli police used water cannon and officers on horseback to disperse an ‘illegal march,’ police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. Fourteen protesters were arrested, as was a Palestinian suspected of attacking a Jewish man as he walked near the Old City, he said.

In Gaza, around a thousand people marched to the U.N. headquarters in Gaza City, where the demonstrators chanted: ‘We shall return. We will never give up or compromise over our land.’

‘We won the support of the world,’ Abbas said, adding that Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians are ‘condemned internationally.’

Police and hospital officials say the deadliest attack was near a bus stop in the sprawling neighborhood of Sadr City where at least seven people were killed and 20 wounded. Officials say in all 11 bombings struck Baghdad, as well as the cities of Kirkuk and Tarmiyah.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the attacks, but they bore the hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq and other Sunni insurgent groups.

Walmart to inspect all Bangladesh factories

2Walmart-ը ստուգումներ կանցկացնի Բանգլադեշի ֆաբրիկաներումGiant retailer Walmart announced Tuesday that it would conduct in-depth safety inspections of all 279 of its Bangladesh suppliers, in the wake of the building collapse that killed more than 1,100 people.
The US retailer said it would release publicly the names and inspection information on each of the factories, and meanwhile also issued a list of more than 200 factories that are blacklisted for failing to meet its standards for suppliers.
The company did not say however if it would join a protocol agreed by a number of other major buyers of clothes made in Bangladesh, the “Accord on Fire and Building Safety” endorsed by Benetton, Mango, Marks & Spencer, Inditex and H&M.
The action comes in the wake of the April 24 collapse of a nine-story building outside Dhaka housing multiple garment factories, including some which reportedly supplied Walmart, killing 1,127 in the worst disaster ever in the global textile industry.

UN says natural disasters cost $2.5 tn since 2000

1Բնական աղետների արժեքը կազմել է 2.5 տրիլիոն դոլարThe cost of natural disasters has hit $2.5 trillion so far this century, far higher than previously estimated, a UN report said Wednesday, urging companies to face up to the risks.
The study by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) said the figure, representing only direct losses, was more accurate than traditional tallies.
Most tallies “just represent the picture from internationally-reported disasters, the big disasters which get into the headlines,” said Andrew Maskrey, author of the UNISDR’s latest Global Assessment Report.
“If you add in all the nationally-reported disasters, which don’t get into the international media and the international databases, our impression is that losses are about 50 percent higher than is currently being reported, and losses are going up rapidly,” he said.
Businesses have been outsourcing to disaster-prone locations without taking adequate catastrophe-proofing precautions, a move which could be potentially costly in case of a disaster, he noted.

Bahrain court jails 6 tweeters for a year

3Բահրեյնի դատարանը Twitter-ի վեց օգտատերերին դատապարտում էA Bahraini court on Wednesday sentenced six tweeters charged with insulting King Hamad to one year in prison, the public prosecutor’s office announced.
The six were charged by the lower criminal court with “misusing the right of free expression,” it said in a statement.
They were accused of writing remarks “undermining the values and traditions of Bahrain’s society towards the king on Twitter,” according to the statement.
Activists in Bahrain, the scene of a Shiite-led uprising that began two years ago against the ruling Sunni monarchy, use Twitter as a platform to report what they describe as regime “violations” against them.
Prominent activist Nabil Rajab, who heads the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, has been in custody since June 6 on charges of insulting members of the Sunni community via Twitter.

Viagra harvest shuts schools in Himalayas as locals rush to collect aphrodisiac fungus

Schools in rural Nepal have been left deserted as villagers scramble to harvest a rare high-altitude fungus said to boost sexual performance.

The reported aphrodisiac properties of Yarchagumba are so potent the fungus has been dubbed ‘Himalayan Viagra’, and demand in China and other Asian markets is such that it can fetch the equivalent of up to $20,000 per kilo.

Education officials in Jajarkot district – where around 8,000 students have joined the annual rush to hunt for the fungus in meadows high in the Himalayas – said there was ‘no point’ in keeping schools open.

Parents and teachers are also among those flocking to high meadows in search of the fungus.

‘In this district alone, about 8,000 students have left school for the expedition,’ Prakash Subedi, from the Jajarkot district eduction office, said in a report on ninemsn.com.

‘Without the students, there’s no point running the school so we close them. Even the teachers go to collect it,’ he said.

Mr Subedi added that extra classes were held during the autumn at some schools to make up for the time students miss during the spring tmie Yarchagumba harvest.

Although parents are urged not to take children with them when they go in pursuit of the rare fungus, schools’ pleas tend to fall on deaf ears because children can earn as much as 100,000 rupees – the equivalent of over $1,000 – during the harvest, Mr Subedi said.

The word Yarchagumba means ‘summer grass, winter worm’ in Tibetan.

While no research has been published on its aphrodisiac properties, Chinese herbalists believe Yarchagumba can enhance sexual performance.

The fungus is boiled in water to make tea or added to soups or stews, and is also reputed to cure a host of ailments.

Tuck in! People should eat more insects to fight hunger and reduce pollution, U.N says

The U.N. has new weapons to fight hunger, boost nutrition and reduce pollution.

But the answer to food crises around the world may not be that palatable – because they want people to eat insects.

The Food and Agriculture Organization on Monday hailed the likes of grasshoppers, ants and other members of the insect world as an underutilized food for people, livestock and pets.

A 200-page report, released at a news conference at the U.N. agency’s Rome headquarters, says 2 billion people worldwide already supplement their diets with insects, which are high in protein and minerals, and have environmental benefits.
Insects are ‘extremely efficient’ in converting feed into edible meat, the agency said.

On average, they can convert 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of feed into 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of insect mass. In comparison, cattle require 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds) of feed to produce a kilo of meat.

Currently, most edible insects are gathered in forests and what insect farming does take place is often family-run and serves niche markets.

But the U.N. says mechanization can ratchet up insect farming production. The fish bait industry, for example, has long farmed insects.

Insect farming is ‘one of the many ways to address food and feed security,’ the food agency said.

‘Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly,’ the agency said, adding they leave a ‘low environmental footprint.’

They provide high-quality protein and nutrients when compared with meat and fish and are ‘particularly important as a food supplement for undernourished children,’ it said.

Insects can also be rich in copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium and zinc, and are a source of fibre.

But the question on everyone’s lips is – are they tasty?

The report noted that some caterpillars in southern Africa and weaver ant eggs in Southeast Asia are considered delicacies and command high prices.

Mexican volcano spewing ash and lava threatens town as officials prepare to evacuate thousands

Thousands of people living in the shadow of this looming Mexican volcano have been placed on high alert following a dramatic increase in seismic activity from the Popocatepetl crater.

The 17,886ft active volcano near Mexico City, known as Popo, rumbled and shook during the night on Saturday, and has been spewing ash, lava and steam in recent days.

Officials have closed off an exclusion zone around the cone of the volcano and are poised to evacuate towns in its foothills as experts warned of plumes of steam reaching more than half a mile into the sky above the crater.

Authorities have alerted town in two central states as well as the capital, after Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Center elevated its alert level to Yellow Phase 3 – the fifth rung on a seven-stage warning scale.
Should the alert level rise thousands of people could be evacuated from the most vulnerable villages in the shadow of the peak. Shelters have been set up in case authorities are forced to evacuate residents.

Popocatepetl is an Aztec word meaning ‘Smoking Mountain’. Popo lay dormant for decades until it began putting out small eruptions of ash almost daily in 1994. These eruptions started strengthening two weeks ago and have increased even more this weekend.

The millions of people who have settled in and around the Mexican capital mean experts regard Popocatepetl as one of the most potentially destructive volcanoes in the world.

Justin Bieber and Bon Jovi Concerts Scene of Stadium Heist

130514102344-bieber-johannesburg-0512-story-topThieves targeted the city’s famed FNB Stadium following concerts this weekend by Justin Bieber and Bon Jovi in a heist that included them chiseling through the wall of a safe room and lowering themselves into the room with ropes. And using a system of ropes and ladders to get back out.

Authorities are not disclosing exactly how much cash was stolen, but they believe most of the money had been collected from numerous bars, food stands and merchandise outlets.

No one even noticed the cash was gone until early Monday morning.

“It wasn’t an impromptu incident,” Jacques Grobbelarr, a member of the stadium’s management team, told Eyewitness News South Africa. “There was definite planning. Looking at the scene and the place they broke into, it looks as if they were planning this for quite some time, probably a couple of days.”

Private investigators have been brought in to help police, and several employees have been given polygraph tests, as authorities believe only those with an intimate knowledge of the stadium’s layout and security plans could have pulled off a heist of this caliber. Officials are also combing through footage from 10 security cameras around the stadium, which remains on lockdown.

The stunning robbery came just hours after Bieber wrapped up a Sunday concert for more than 60,000 fans. After learning of the heist, Bieber denied any involvement, telling TMZ, “It’ wasn’t me.”
