The Philippines said Wednesday it seized a Chinese fishing boat and its 11 crewmen on charges of catching endangered sea turtles in disputed South China Sea waters, prompting China to demand their release and accuse Manila of being provocative.

The boat was loaded with more than 350 endangered turtles that were confiscated when it was seized near territory known as Half Moon Shoal, Philippine maritime police Chief Superintendent Noel Vargas said.

China demanded that the Philippines release the boat, and Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying urged Manila to “stop taking further provocative actions.”

Vargas said the Chinese boat will be taken to the western Philippine province of Palawan, about 110 kilometers (70 miles) from Half Moon Shoal, and the fishermen will face charges of violating Philippine laws prohibiting catches of endangered green sea turtles.

Hong Kong culls 20,000 chickens carrying bird flu amid fears ahead of Chinese New Year feasts

Hong Kong has culled 20,000 chickens and closed a major poultry market after the bird flu virus was discovered.

Authorities have banned local farms from selling to the Cheung Sha Wan poultry market just two days before Chinese New Year, when traders usually see a big boost in sales.

The city has also blocked imports of fresh chicken from mainland China for 21 days after the H7N9 virus was discovered in a shipment from the southern province of Guangdong.

The market will also remain closed for 21 days until February 18 for cleaning and disinfection.

The H7N9 virus passes easily between birds and could develop the ability to spread from human-to-human, causing a global pandemic.

Staff members of Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department have carried out the cull today, gassing the chickens with carbon dioxide.

Two people infected with H7N9 bird flu have died in Hong Kong and a third patient is being treated. All three were infected during visits to the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.

Police destroy 200m Yuan worth of counterfeit goods, Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China - 14 May 2013Chinese police destroyed £21 million of counterfeit designer goods today in a lavish publicity stunt aimed at showing the world they are cracking down on the illegal trade.

Fake wine, cigarettes, handbags and cosmetics were all thrown on a fire in Guiyang, southwest China’s Guizhou Province.

But authorities have a long way to go – a recent UN report revealed a staggering 75 per cent of all fake goods seized worldwide from 2008 to 2010 were primarily from China.

The UN report stated that counterfeit goods accounted for one third of the organised crime in East Asia and the Pacific is worth approximately $90bn (£58bn).

Most counterfeits fall into four categories: CDs and DVDs; accessories, watches and footwear; tobacco products; and textiles.

Last year an entire city in China literally shut up shop when nearly all of its stores closed after it was falsely reported that officials were planning a clampdown on the sale of counterfeit products.

Officials in Shenyang city were forced to beg store owners to reopen after 95 per cent of shops remain closed.

In November police arrested 73 people suspected of manufacturing and selling almost 1 million fake luxury bags in China.

The Ministry of Public Security said police seized more than 20,000 fake Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Coach bags and closed 37 sites where the forgery ring made or sold the bags.

Police said the ring sold more than 960,000 bags and exported many to the United States and Middle East.
