4 Killed in Blasts Near Turkish-Syrian Border

146115_mainimgTurkey’s Interior Minister Muammer Guler says at least four people were killed and 18 others were injured by explosions in a town near Turkey’s border with Syria.

Guler said the cause of the explosions Saturday in Reyhanli, was under investigation. He gave no other details.

Private NTV television said there were at least four explosions. Earlier, Reyhanli’s Mayor, Huseyin Sanverdi, told Haberturk television that one of explosions occurred near the municipal building, while the other was close to a post office building.

Health Minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu said at least 15 ambulances were helping the injured.

Strong Quake Jolts Southern Iran, 15 Injured

i1Iranian state TV says a strong 6.2 magnitude earthquake has jolted the south of the country, injuring at least 15 people.

The report said the quake struck the Arabian Sea port town of Jask at 6:38 a.m. (GMT 2:08 a.m.) Saturday damaging hundreds of homes.

Even moderate quakes can be deadly in the Iranian countryside, where houses are often built of bricks.

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake killed at least 37 in southern Iran last month. Some 26,000 people were killed by a 6.6 magnitude quake that flattened the historic southeastern city of Bam in 2003.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and, on average, experiences at least one slight quake every day.

That’s one way to down a pint… Student filmed drinking a beer through her EAR

be3There have been numerous drinking games invented over the years – but drinking a pint of beer through the ear has got to be one of the most challenging.

But a young female drinker has apparently achieved the astonishing feat in this video posted on the Czech Beer Festival’s Facebook page.

The woman, wearing a green cardigan with matching scarf, can be seen placing a bendy straw into her left ear as her friends gather around her.

But deciding she may have better luck with her right ear, she removes her earring before placing the straw in that ear instead.
The end of the straw is placed in a pint of beer and the drinker appears to suck the booze through her ear in this bizarre video which lasts just one minute and 53 seconds.

And judging from her facial expressions, it apparently isn’t a very pleasant experience.

The pint of beer gradually empties until it is finally all gone and the young female is greeted with a round of applause.

It is thought the video is a fake, especially as the beer can’t be seen in certain camera shots, but it is still unclear how the ruse of the emptying beer glass was created.

Musicians really ARE sexier: Scientists find that carrying a guitar increases your chance of getting a date by a third

m1 (1)Carrying a guitar can increase the chances of you getting a date by a third, according to a study by researchers from the University of South Brittany.

The study found that women were 31% more likely to give their number to a man carrying a guitar – double the amount of people who would give their number to the same man when he was empty-handed.

The study was led by Professor Nicolas Gueguen, a researcher in behavioural sciences at the University.

Gueguen hired a 20-year-old man to approach 300 women aged between 18 and 22 in a shopping centre in Brittany.

The man told each girl that they were ‘really pretty’ and asked for her phone number so they could arrange a date.

For the first 100 women he was holding a sports bag.

For the next 100 women he approached them holding a guitar case.

And for the final 100 women, the man asked them for their number without anything in his hands.

When the actor was carrying the guitar case, 31% of the women gave them his number.

When he was carrying nothing, 14% of the women gave them his number.

The biggest turn off for the women was when he was carrying the sports bag, which had a success rate of only 9%.

WTO set to pick new leader, amid talks deadlock

4ԱՀԿ-ն կընտրի նոր ղեկավարիThe World Trade Organisation is close to choosing its next leader in a final round pitting Brazil against Mexico, with the winner facing the tough task of restoring the clout of global commerce’s rule-setting body.

Brazil’s WTO ambassador Roberto Azevedo and his rival Herminio Blanco, Mexico’s former trade minister, are expected to learn as early as Tuesday whether they have won a contest that is seen as too close to call.

All concerned are keenly aware that the successor to two-term director general Pascal Lamy from France must act fast to revive the WTO’s moribund global trade talks.

Both men have pitched a similar vision for a negotiating process which they say needs overhauling.

Blanco, meanwhile, said it was time to reboot the 159-nation WTO.

“The main challenge is the ‘W’ in ‘WTO’,” he told AFP, underlining that the logjam had pushed members into negotiating bilateral and regional deals.

“You have to transfer this energy back to Geneva,” where the WTO is based, to prove the point and reach of the organisation, he said.

FIFA Task Force outlines anti-racism fight

130506230411-football-fifa-task-force-boateng-blatter-story-top(CNN) — FIFA’s anti-racism Task Force proposed the attendance of officials to specifically “identify potential acts of discrimination” at matches when the newly-created body first met on Monday.

Chaired by FIFA vice president Jeffrey Webb, who presides over the continental CONCACAF body, the Task Force also suggested the possibility of points deductions and/or relegation for “reoffenders or for serious incidents”.

The Task Force will present a draft resolution at the FIFA Congress in Mauritius at the end of the month whereupon member associations will vote on the measures.

“We have a special responsibility in the way we can impact football and society,” said Webb during his opening remarks in Zurich.

“One of the opportunities this task force has is its vast reach throughout FIFA’s 209 member associations, where we can implement the resolutions in every region and every country where football is played, bringing universality to the mechanisms that combat racism and discrimination.”

Webb: Racism sanctions will send message

FARE: ‘Erratic’ Sepp Blatter should quit

Boateng: Racism in football must end

Alex Ferguson: ‘Racism still exists’

Hayatou: Good example key against racism

The creation of the Task Force was announced in March after a series of racial incidents affecting the sport.

In England, both Luiz Suarez and John Terry received bans for racial abuse in separate incidents that took place in 2011 but the story that made headlines around the world came when Milan’s Kevin-Prince Boateng led his team off in a friendly in protest at racism from supporters this January.

Boateng was swiftly invited by Blatter to FIFA headquarters and was one of the first names added to the makeup of the Task Force, but the Ghanaian did not attend Monday’s meeting due to playing commitments.

“K-P Boateng and Jozy Altidore didn’t make today’s FIFA meet,” tweeted Task Force member Osasu Obayiuwana, a football journalist and lawyer. “I hope they attend the next session. Views of active players are crucial.”

In their absence, the Task Force suggested that officials attend games to identify discriminatory acts “with the aim of easing the pressure on referees and facilitating the availability of evidence, which is not always easy to obtain”.

The second proposal is likely to be of more interest to fans, especially those who have long argued that points deductions are a more efficient punishment for clubs and national teams than paltry fines.

The Task Force suggested the application of sanctions in two stages, with the threat of “a warning, a fine or the playing of a match behind closed doors” for “a first or minor offence”.

For more serious incidents and those who reoffended, the Task Force spoke of “points deductions, expulsion from a competition, or relegation”.

The third proposal from the new body was for the “need to implement the existing sanctions in a harmonized way across all confederations, member associations and leagues”.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who courted controversy in 2011 when telling CNN that racism could be settled by a handshake after the match, announced his satisfaction with the inaugural meeting.

“Very happy with first Task Force Against Racism & Discrimination meeting,” he tweeted, before later adding “We want strong & consistent sanctions at all levels of football for any discriminatory act.”

A second Task Force meeting is planned for later in the year to discuss how to educate those in football in a manner which reduces discriminatory acts in the game.

911 call — ‘I’ve been kidnapped!’ — cops find 3 women missing for years

400h225-2(CNN) — Amanda Berry was last seen after finishing her shift at a Burger King in Cleveland in 2003. It was the eve of her 17th birthday.

Georgina “Gina” DeJesus disappeared nearly a year later, in April 2004. She was 14.

Michele Knight vanished in 2002, at age 19, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper.

All three were found alive in a home in a Cleveland neighborhood Monday night, police announced in a development hailed as a miracle by their families.

“Help me, I am Amanda Berry,” Berry told police in a frantic 911 call from a neighbor’s house. “I’ve been kidnapped, and I’ve been missing for 10 years. And I’m here, I’m free now.”

Suspects’ uncle: I never want to see them

Neighbor: “I thought this girl was dead”

Police swiftly moved in on the house where the three of them said they had been and arrested a 52-year-old man, identified as a former school bus driver. Two others, identified as his brothers, ages 50 and 54, also have been arrested, Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba told reporters late Monday. Police believe only the middle brother lived at the home, he said.

The men are being held in the city jail awaiting charges. An FBI team is collecting evidence in the house.

“This is a great, great outcome that we have them still with us,” Tomba said. “It’s just truly, truly amazing and it’s a blessing to the community and to the members of the police department and their families that they’re alive. I can’t tell you how happy we are.”

Those feelings were echoed at Cleveland’s Metro Health Medical Center where the three women and a fourth person were being treated.

“This isn’t the ending we usually hear to these stories, so we’re very happy,” said Dr. Gerald Maloney, an emergency room physician there. We’re very happy for them.”

The three women were in fair condition. Maloney would not identify the fourth person being seen at the hospital, but witnesses said Berry, who escaped from the house with the help of a neighbor, had a young child with her.

The escape

Neighbor Charles Ramsey was sitting down to a fast food meal when he heard screaming.

“I see this girl going nuts trying to get out of a house,” he told CNN affiliate WEWS. “I go on the porch and she says, ‘help me get out. I’ve been in here a long time.'”

Figuring it was a domestic dispute, Ramsey kicked in the bottom of the door and the woman came out with a little girl and said, “Call 911, My name is Amanda Berry,” according to Ramsey, who admitted he didn’t recognize the name or know she was missing.

Free from the house where they had been held captive, Berry pleaded for a phone.

“They were crazy, screaming, ‘Help, call police, please help.’ … They were desperate, crying, running,” said Angela Garcia, whose aunt provided the phone for them to call police.

Ramsey also called 911, less than a minute later.

“She’s like, ‘This (expletive) kidnapped me and my daughter,'” he told 911.

DeJesus’s mother, Nancy, met with her at the hospital, cousin Sylvia Colon, told CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight.” She had never given up hope of finding her daughter alive.

Kidnapping suspect’s son ‘truly stunned’

Ohio: Neighbor interview, then 911 call

“She has always said that she just could feel it, a link a mom can feel, but she always believed Gina was alive and well,” Colon said. “She always believed that. I just want to say what a phenomenal Mother’s Day gift she gets this Mother’s Day.”

Suspect’s identity

Brian Cummins, a councilman who represents the area where the women were found, identified the suspect in whose home the women were found as Ariel Castro. His uncle, Julio Castro, told CNN’s “Anderson Cooper 360” that his family had grown up in the same west Cleveland neighborhood and knew the DeJesus family.

Castro used to work as a bus driver for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, according to district spokeswoman Roseann Canfora. She did not have specifics Monday night on how long he was employed, when he left or whether he was fired or left voluntarily.

Ramsey told reporters the suspect wasn’t known for anything exciting — “until today.”

“We see this dude every day. I’ve been here a year. I barbecued with this dude. We eat ribs and listen to salsa music,” Ramsey said.

And Garcia said neighbors “never saw nothing suspicious.”

“We never saw the girls there, and we were always outside,” she said. “We only saw the guy.”

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson said there were “many unanswered questions regarding this case, and the investigation will be ongoing.” But he added, “I am thankful that these three young ladies are found and alive.”

Bangladesh riot death toll rises to 37 after Islamic hardilners demanding blasphemy law battled police

ba137 people were killed and hundreds more injured in Bangladesh today in fierce street fighting between police and Islamic hardliners demanding the death penalty for blasphemy.

Rioters chanting ‘God is greatest!’ torched shops and vehicles, blocked roads and fought bloody battles with police in the capital of Dhaka and its suburbs.

At least 70,000 activists ran amok in the capitals financial district overnight, forcing hundreds of workers to sleep in their offices as gunfire rattled through the night.

Dozens of demonstrators were arrested, while the leader of the protests was put on a plane to the country’s second city Chittagong and the deputy chief was detained in the capital.

Activists from the fundamentalist Hefajat-e-Islam group had marched along at least six roads, blocking transport between Dhaka and other cities.

Police have said about 200,000 people marched to central Dhaka, where tensions erupted as protesters – armed with rocks – clashed with security officials, who beat them back with batons.

It is believed rioting broke out after police tried to intercept protesters, many of whom had travelled from remote villages and had gathered in front of the country’s largest mosque.

The protests had been instigated by Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, the leader of Hefajat-e-Islam who is said to be around 90 years old.

Hefajat-e-Islam is a newly created radical Islamist group that wants greater segregation of men and women, and a stricter Islamic education. It also want the restoration of pledges to Allah in the constitution.

The government in Bangladesh has rejected the groups’ demands, saying the Muslim-majority nation is governed by secular liberal laws.

Leaders have threatened to launch a campaign to oust the government unless their demands are met.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the citizenship was “an expression of deep gratitude for all that our nation gained when so many saved by Wallenberg came to these shores”.

“We are here today to celebrate something exceptional in the human spirit,” she told a ceremony in Canberra.

“As the last witnesses to the horrors of World War II leave us, it is vital, it is imperative to keep alive the memory and example of individuals like Raoul Wallenberg.”

Wallenberg, who was posted to Nazi-occupied Budapest in July 1944, is believed to have saved tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews in the final months of the Holocaust by providing them with protective passports.

Kindergarten head held over China poison deaths

Chinese police have arrested the head of a kindergarten and her associate over the deaths of two children from a rival school who ate yoghurt injected with rat poison, state media said.

The five- and six-year-old girls from northern Hebei province died after eating the yoghurt which they had found in a bag on the side of the road while walking to school with their grandmother.

2Չինաստանի մանկապարտեզի տնօրենը ձերբակալվել է եր եխաներին թունավորեThe rival kindergarten director Shi Haixia and her associate Yang Wenming “admitted that they injected the poison into the yoghurt and left it on the street”, the China Daily said.

“Their intention was to damage the reputation of the rival kindergarten.”

The poison contained a strong rat poison called tetramine, the China Daily said, citing a local security official.

The pair were arrested on Wednesday, the same day the younger girl died after a week in hospital. The six-year-old died within hours of drinking the yoghurt on April 24.

Cyber pervert took intimate pictures of his neighbours using the webcams on their computers

m2A perverted computer expert took thousands of intimate pictures of his neighbours after infecting their computers with a virus that allowed him to spy on them through their webcams.

Police in Zaragoza, Spain, arrested the 34-year-old man and confiscated his computer hard drive which contained images of hundreds of people who had absolutely no idea they were being spied on.

He had gained access to their computers through wi-fi (wireless) networks before infecting them with a trojan-type virus which he had designed.

As almost all modern laptops, and many desktops, now come with a built in web cams it meant he could spy on them in their own homes, quietly watching them going about their daily business.

Pictures were taken of unwitting computer owners while they were in the bathroom or in the bedroom.

The man was also able to obtain the sensitive information such as passwords.

Investigators said the man, who they described as someone with high technical expertise and few friends, had used a very advanced computer virus.

A big thumbs up: Traveller hitchhikes 100,000 miles around the world without spending any money

t19Frenchman Jeremy Marie has spent five years travelling over 100,000 miles around the world, relying all the way on the kindness of strangers for a free ride.

From trekking in 50C heat through the deserts of Sudan to braving temperatures of -20C while catching a lift in Kazakhstan, Mr Marie has visited over 71 countries.

The 29-year-old globetrotter has hitched lifts with cars, boats, planes and even a donkey since he set off from Caen, Normandy in October 2007.

Remarkably despite his 180,000km trip, Jeremy has not paid a penny towards his transport and instead relied on the generosity of strangers to give him a free ride.

During his trip he hitchiked and sofa surfed his way across Europe, USA, South America, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and plenty more in between.

He said: ‘My passion for travelling came when I stayed with a Polish family as part of a school foreign exchange trip.

‘I like to hitchhike, it’s a good way to meet people and you get to see the world from a local’s point of view and see and experience things a tourist wouldn’t usually be able to.

‘Some countries are very easy to hitchhike around, New Zealand was great the people are very friendly, the roads are good and there was no danger of miscommunication.

‘But it was difficult in the US as it’s against the law to hitchhike there, so people were very reluctant to stop and offer me a lift.’

‘Sometimes I felt scared, there’s good and bad people everywhere and so you have to be careful about who you choose to trust when you’re hitchhiking.

Oldest male Nazi camp survivor dies aged 107: reports

3107 տարեկանում մահացել է համակենտրոնացման ճամբարի ողջ մնացած ամենատաÖThe oldest known male survivor of the Nazi concentration camps, Austrian-born Leopold Engleitner, has died at the age of 107, Austrian media reported Thursday.

Engleitner passed away on April 21 but his death was only announced now in accordance with his wishes, said the daily Salzburger Nachrichten.
A Jehovah’s witness and conscientious objector who refused to serve in the Wehrmacht, the Austrian — born on July 23, 1905 in Strobl near Salzburg — was deported by the Nazis in 1939 and survived the concentration camps of Buchenwald , Niederhagen and Ravensbrueck before he was released in 1943 to carry out forced labour.
He weighed just 28 kilogrammes (62 pounds) upon his release.
Called up again in 1945, he escaped and managed to hide in the mountains.
After the war, he led a discrete life until a biography by Bernhard Rammerstorfer in 1999, “Unbroken Will”, turned him into a much sought-after speaker.
Engleitner travelled through Europe, Russia and the United States in the following years, giving lectures, including at the Los Angeles Simon Wiesenthal Center , and telling his story in schools and universities.

60 die in Darfur gold mine collapse

4Դարֆուրի ոսկու հանքի փլուզման հետևանքով մահացել է 60 հոգիDozens of people have been killed in a gold mine collapse in Sudan ‘s Darfur region, said the chief of the district where fighting over gold in January led to the region’s worst unrest in years.

“The number of people who died is more than 60,” Haroun al-Hassan, the local commissioner in Jebel Amir, North Darfur , said on Thursday.
He added that rescue operations were still taking place after Monday’s accident.
“I cannot give exact figures because no one got precise numbers of how many people were going inside the tunnel,” which went down 40 metres (yards), he said.
Rescuers were using traditional tools to try to reach the victims, he said, without specifying whether anyone might still be alive.
“We cannot use machines because if they came near, the ground will collapse. People are using traditional tools and because of this, the rescue is very slow,” Hassan said.

Briton jailed for 10 years over fake bomb detectors

2Բրիտնացին դատապարտվել է ռումբի կեղծ դետեկտորներ վաճառելու համարA British millionaire was on Thursday jailed for 10 years for selling fake bomb detectors to the Iraqi government and other countries, by a judge who told him he had blood on his hands.
James McCormick made an estimated £50 million ($76 million, 59 million euros) from selling the devices, which prosecutors said were based on a novelty golf ball finder and had no scientific basis.
Last week, a jury at London ‘s Old Bailey found the 57-year-old guilty of three counts of fraud.
Passing sentence at the court on Thursday, judge Richard Hone said McCormick’s “callous confidence trick” had likely cost lives.
McCormick is believed to have made around £37 million from sales to Iraq alone, although other customers included Georgia , Niger , Belgium and even the United Nations, for use in Lebanon .
The businessman, from Somerset in southwest England , told the court he had also sold detectors to the Egyptian army, Kenyan police, Hong Kong ‘s prison service and Thai border control.

Two men in white at Vatican as former pope returns

1Վատիկանում կրկին կհանդիպեն նախկին և գործող ՊապերըTwo months after his historic resignation, Benedict XVI was set to return to the Vatican on Thursday, where he will live in a former monastery in an unprecedented arrangement that will see a pope and a former pope both housed in the tiny state.
Benedict will leave by helicopter from Castel Gandolfo outside Rome , the papal lakeside residence where he has been staying since he stepped down at the end of February, and is expected to touch down in the Vatican at around 1430 GMT.
His successor Pope Francis will be there to welcome him back and may retire to pray with him. The current pontiff has made repeated gestures of friendship towards Benedict, visiting him in Castel Gandolfo , calling him on his birthday and holding mass for him.
The German-born former pope, who resigned because of old age, will move into the Mater Ecclesiae monastery building within the Vatican grounds — an oasis of calm with its own vegetable garden and blooming flowerbeds — which has been renovated for him.
There Benedict plans to carry out a life of quiet contemplation and academic research.
