80-year woman mistakenly swallows $5,000 diamond she won at charity event

d1An 80-year-old Florida woman mistakenly swallowed a $5,000 diamond that unknown to her had been placed in her glass of champagne at an charity event she was attending.

The woman, known as Miriam, has declined to give her last name, but was attending the event organized by the Tampa Women’s Club last weekend.

As a surprise for the attendees, the organizers filled each of the 400 flutes of champagne with a cubic zirconia, except for one which contained a $5,000 diamond donated by a local jeweler.

The idea was that at the end of the evening everyone’s glass would be checked and whoever had the diamond would be allowed to keep it.

But disaster struck after Miriam unwittingly swallowed everything that was in her flute.

‘We were laughing and I wasn’t paying attention and I took a swallow,’ Miriam told WFTS.

To begin with Miriam hid her embarrassment about what she had done, hopeful that someone else would be found to have the diamond and announced the winner.

Eventually Miriam was forced to came forward and admit what she had done. Immediately she was taken to a local hospital for an x-ray, only to find out that diamonds don’t show up on x-rays.

Fortunately for Miriam she had a routine colonoscopy booked for the next day, although it turned out to be anything but routine as she gave her doctor strict instructions to be on the lookout for something sparkling.

Once the diamond was washed and steamed it was tested and confirmed as the winning diamond, which Miriam has decided to keep as a family heirloom.

Heathrow security workers sacked for stealing entrance fee money for VIP lounge popular with David Beckham and Rihanna

Two Heathrow airport security workers have been fired for allegedly stealing the entrance fee for the exclusive VIP lounge used by leading celebrities.

The staff are accused of taking bribes to let travellers escape the £1,800 fee to use the service – which previously could only be used by royalty, diplomats and Heads of State.

On other occasions they apparently took gifts from stars before letting them off without paying the entrance charge.

The VIP lounge service at the airport has been used by David Beckham and Rihanna. However, there is no suggestion they were involved in the scam.

The two employees working in the VIP service were sacked after an internal

investigation was launched, The Sun reported.

The exclusive lounge was opened up to paying customers for the first time two years ago to anyone prepared to stump up the hefty fee.

It is unclear if the sacked managers have been reported to police.

Garment workers protest as Bangladesh toll nears 300

բանգլադեշGarment workers who sew clothes for Western brands clashed with Bangladeshi police Friday at a mass rally over the death of nearly 300 colleagues in a collapsed building as rescuers raced against time to find survivors.

Police fired tear-gas and rubber bullets at the angry crowds as the workers, some armed with bamboo sticks, blockaded roads and attacked factories in the textile hub of Gazipur outside the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.

“The situation is very volatile. Hundreds of thousands of workers have joined the protests,” M. Asaduzzaman of Gazipur police control room told AFP.

Widespread anger has been fuelled by revelations that factory bosses forced the 3,000-strong work force to return to the building on Wednesday despite cracks appearing in the building the day before.

Elton John Picks Lady GaGa as Godmother to His Second Son

elton-john-picks-lady-gaga-as-godmother-to-his-second-sonElton John and partner David Furnish apparently are so impressed with what Lady GaGa has done to their first son Zachary that they ask her to be the godmother of their second son Elijah. John, who welcomed Elijah in January via surrogate mother, told Extra on Thursday, April 25, that GaGa was a great person to his children.
“She’s a great role model, she’s young, [and] she’s been a great godmother to Zachary,” John said. Speaking of the “Born This Way” singer, he added, “We’re all bonkers in this business, but we’re human beings at the same time.”

John recalled the moment when GaGa was going to bathe Zachary in Las Vegas. He said, “She was already dressed to go to the show, and she was sitting there and she bathed him, and she was like dressed like Audrey Hepburn… and she fed him.”

John and Furnish also told Extra that having children changed their view about life. “You learn so much about yourself and about life by seeing children,” Furnish said. John added, “I love getting up in the morning and having breakfast with Zachary. Everything I thought I would find annoying about having children, like screaming and shouting and tantrums… I don’t find any of it annoying. I find it all enchanting.”

USAID SUPPORTS FULL FUNDING FOR KARABAKH AID PROGRAM; “VERY ENTHUSIASTIC” ABOUT PUBLIC-PRIVATE JAVAKHK PARTNERSHIPS

brad_sherman_hearing_042513Rajiv Shah, the Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, in response to questions this week from Congressmen Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Brad Sherman (D-CA), affirmed the Obama Administration’s commitment to fully fund Congressional assistance allocations for Nagorno Karabakh and to support public-private partnerships to generate sustainable economic growth in the Samtskhe-Javakheti (Javakhk)  region of Georgia, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).
During an April 24th hearing of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State-Foreign Operations, Congressman Schiff asked a series of questions about U.S. aid programs for Nagorno Karabakh and Javakhk.  In response, Administrator Shah noted that, “in the past we haven’t expended all the funds,” adding that, “I know our Assistant Administrator for the region is committed to doing that and we believe will be successful of getting that done.  With respect to the public-private partnership with the Diaspora community, we are very enthusiastic about that and think that also is a good model for how we’d like to work in the future. The Armenian community has been a very good community to work with. And so, we’re eager to kind of get that going.”  The full exchange between Congressman Schiff and Administrator Shah went as follows:
Congressman Adam Schiff: Two quick questions, one funding for Nagorno Karabakh. The history of the last several years as Congress has appropriated funding USAID hasn’t used it at least not completely. We hear at times there is a lack of capacity. But it seems given the small amount that we are talking about, a leap of imagination to think that with the humanitarian needs there it couldn’t really be fully be absorbed.
So I’d like to get your thoughts on that. And I’d like to work with you to make sure we can utilize all the assistance that’s been provided to help meet the humanitarian needs there.
Second in the Javakhk region of Georgia is a very impoverished Armenian community. We have raised with the Georgian government and USAID an interest of trying to meet the needs of that population as well as the country more broadly. And over the past year Armenian-American groups have been working closely with USAID to explore a public-private partnership that could leverage U.S. assistance to Georgia and that region. If you could give us a progress report on those efforts?
USAID Administrator Shah:  Thank you. I will make sure my team provides more details on both of these. But I will say with respect with Nagorno Karabakh I believe we actually have a plan to fully execute the program as we have it.
I know in the past we haven’t expended all the funds. But I know our assistant administrator for the region is committed to doing that and we believe will be successful of getting that done.
With respect to the public-private partnership with the diaspora community, we are very enthusiastic about that and think that also is a good model for how we’d like to work in the future. The Armenian community has been a very good community to work with. And so, we’re eager to kind of get that going.
I don’t have an immediate update on where that is. But I know when we put it together we were enthusiastic because it came — we had a lot of private sector commitments to leverage our resources from the get go which is relatively unique.
Congressman Adam Schiff:  Thank you with that. I look forward to working with you on both those issues.
USAID Administrator Shah: Thank you.
The video exchange between Congressman Schiff and Administror Shah can be viewed at:
In response to questions from Congressman Sherman, during an April 25th hearing of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Daniel Yohannes noted his expectation that a new MCC aid package for Georgia would include funding for Armenian language education and for schools in the Javakhk region.  Representative Sherman also directed comments and questions to USAID Administrator Shah, who, along with Yohannes, offered testimony before the panel.  Their complete exchange went as follows:
Congressman Brad Sherman:  I’m somewhat concerned that the Administration request cuts aid to Armenia. I think you ought to increase that instead.  And if you’re looking for a source of funds you could look at U.S. aid of all types to Azerbaijan, which is thwarting our development efforts for the area by threatening to shoot down civilian aircraft that go into Stepanakert’s new airport.
I’ve talked to Mr. Ohannes about the Javakhketi region of Georgia.  We provide very substantial aid to Georgia and I hope, as I discussed with him – and now I have chance to discuss with you – that a significant part of our aid would go to that otherwise neglected region.  And I’ll ask, if I have a chance, Mr. Ohannes, to describe what is the status of our second compact with Georgia, and will Javakhketi be a strong focus if that compact is concluded?
Daniel Yohannes (MCC): The investment proposal is proceeded extremely well and should be presented to the board sometime in June of this year.  And, Mr. Congressman, please know that there is some funding that is set aside for Armenian language and also for a number of schools in the region.
Video of the exchange is available here:
“We welcome Rajiv Shah’s constructive approach and ongoing cooperation with Congress regarding our nation’s assistance programs and priorities for both Nagorno Karabakh and Javakhk, and also Daniel Yohannes’ initial indications of meaningful Armenian components of a second MCC compact with Georgia” said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian.  “We look forward to taking a closer look at how these priorities are being implemented by both USAID and MCC, as we continue to bring our contribution as American civil society stakeholders to these truly transformative international initiatives.”
In a related development, Congressman Sherman has submitted the following written questions to Secretary of State John Kerry regarding Nagorno Karabakh, Azerbaijan, and Turkey’s blockade of Armenia.
— In August 2012, Azerbaijan’s President pardoned and praised a confessed axe-murderer Ramil Safarov, who was convicted of killing an Armenian officer at a 2005 NATO training program in Hungary. What is the State Department doing to urge Azerbaijan to re-incarcerate Ramil Safarov?  Will the Administration tie military assistance to Azerbaijan to a reversal of Baku’s aggressive policies?
— Azerbaijan has threatened to shoot down civilian aircraft that fly into the airport of Nagorno Karabakh. What consequence would Azerbaijan face if it were to shoot down civilian aircraft flying into the airport in Stepanakert?
— The Turkey-Armenian Protocols, which were announced on April 22, 2009, sought to end Turkey’s blockade of Armenia and establish diplomatic and economic relations.  What meaningful steps has Turkey taken to ratify the Protocols?  What is the State Department doing to press Turkey to end its blockade of Armenia?

‘Being a woman is not a punishment’: Iranian men dress in drag after court ordered criminal to wear female clothes in public to ‘humiliate’ him

i1Kurdish men in Iran have dressed in drag after a court ordered a man to walk down the street in women’s clothing in an attempt to humiliate him.

More than 150 men have posted photographs of themselves in traditional female Kurdish clothing as part of the ‘Kurd men for Equality’ campaign against the sexist nature of sentence.

The campaign’s tagline is: ‘Being a woman is not a way for humiliation or punishment.’

Witnesses said he was forced to walk in public in a red tchador, a type of traditional women’s clothing.

Journalist Saman Rasoulpour told Gay Star News: ‘[In] this way, authorities are able to both demean the accused and deliver a warning to the public.

‘This is the first time in Iran that an accused is paraded in women’s clothes in the streets to humiliate him. It is unprecedented anywhere in Iran.’

The campaign was started on Facebook on April 18 and now has more than 9,000 fans and features messages of support from campaigners around the world.

Women have joined the campaign by dressing in men’s clothes.

In response 17 members of Iran’s parliament signed a letter sent to the Justice Ministry condemning the sentence as ‘humiliating to Muslim women,’ with one MP criticising it during a session of parliament.

Drugs found on Justin Bieber’s tour bus in Sweden

Justin Bieber'sSwedish police said Thursday they had found a “small amount” of drugs on Canadian pop star Justin Bieber’s tour bus while he was performing in Stockholm.
“We conducted a search of Justin Bieber’s bus and found a small amount of drugs,” Stockholm police spokesman Lars Bystroem told AFP.
Police made the find around 8 pm on Wednesday evening during a raid of the empty bus, which was parked outside the Globen arena, where the 19-year-old singer was performing.
The officers in charge of security around the Grand Hotel where Bieber was staying reported a strong odour of marijuana wafting from the bus before the singer and his entourage left for the concert venue.
They then contacted the Stockholm police drug squad, Bystroem said.

Winehouse documentary to feature unseen footage of singer

3Ուայնհաուսի մասին ֆիլմը ցույց կտա մինչ այդ դեռևս չցուցադրված կադրերÕA documentary on the life of tragic British singer Amy Winehouse will feature unseen footage of the late star, the company handling its sale at the Cannes film festival said on Thursday.
Focus Features International, a division of US entertainment giant NBCUniversal, said it would be taking the as yet untitled film to next month’s Riviera movie extravaganza.
The five-time Grammy award-winning singer died in July 2011 aged 27 from accidental alcohol poisoning. She had suffered years of drug and alcohol addiction.
“Using unseen archive footage, the film will show through her own words the genius in Amy’s art and the moving and tragic story of this young woman from London,” Focus Features said in a statement, adding that it would “introduce the project to buyers in Cannes”.
The film is a collaboration between British director Asif Kapadia and producer James Gay-Rees, whose acclaimed documentary on the late Formula One driver Ayrton Senna won them two BAFTAs.
Kapadia and Gay-Rees described Winehouse as a “once-in-a-generation talent who captured everyone’s attention”.

On French language day, UN stresses value of linguistic diversity for peace

03-20-2013irinabokova20 March 2013 – Celebrating the International Day of Francophonie, or French language, top United Nations officials today pointed to the power of that language to bring peoples together and stressed the importance of linguistic diversity for understanding and respect between cultures.

“French draws its strength from the diversity of the peoples and cultures that share it and contribute daily to its enrichment and vibrancy,” Irina Bokova, Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), said in Paris.

“Today, International Francophonie Day, UNESCO celebrates the power of the French language in bringing peoples and cultures together, as a tool for mutual understanding and peace,” she added.

She said that UNESCO underlined the importance of linguistic diversity as a condition for sincere and authentic international cooperation, whereby each person’s thoughts can be expressed directly and accurately, without borrowing others’ words.

“This is an issue of equality and respect; it is also a matter of efficiency and clarity,” she said.

This evening in New York, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will participate in a celebration during which he will receive the Leopold Sear Senghor Medal, “le Grand Prix de la Francophonie,” awarded to the UN for its contribution to the development of the French language.

Mr. Ban is expected to pay tribute to the place of French in international cooperation, including the need for more French-speaking staff in UN peacekeeping operations for crucial dialogue with local populations.

International language days were introduced in the UN system in 2010 to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity in the six official languages of the Organization. Chinese is celebrated on 20 April, English on 23 April, Russian on 6 June, Spanish on 12 October, and Arabic on 18 December.

MENENDEZ AND ROYCE LEAD ANNUAL CAPITOL HILL COMMEMORATION OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Menendez_042413WASHINGTON, DC – The Chairmen of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee – the two powerful Congressional panels with oversight over U.S. foreign policy – joined with their colleagues on the evening of April 24th on Capitol Hill in rallying bipartisan support for a truthful and just resolution of the Armenian Genocide, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).
In moving remarks, Chairman Menendez stressed that there should not be any verbal equivocation when dealing with genocide: “So let’s be perfectly clear, there is no other word for it; there is no euphemism; there is no avoiding it; there are no excuses.  As part of this commemoration we must fully commit ourselves to acknowledging the fundamental truth that what happened from 1915-1923 was by definition a blatant act of genocide – an acknowledgement that must come from Turkey, and it must come from our own government.”
Chairman Royce reviewed how Ottoman Turkish authorities made no effort, at the time of the Genocide, to hide their intent to destroy the Armenian people: “The events that we remember today, that commenced 98 years ago is not only still today – shocking – the genocide, or as Hitler said the annihilation. [. . .] An attempt to annihilate an entire race, in which the American Ambassador Henry Morgenthau was present at the time – an observer – and said that these deportations were an attempt to annihilate a race and that those who gave the orders understood it.  And that far from trying to conceal it, they shared with him, what indeed would be the outcome.”
The Armenian Genocide remembrance, held before a standing-room-only crowd in the Hart Senate Office Building, was hosted by the Congressional Armenian Caucus, with prominent attorney and Capitol Hill veteran Sarig Armenian serving as Master of Ceremonies.  In addition to Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA), others offering remarks and participating in the remembrance were: Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI); Joe Crowley (D-NY), the Vice-Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus; Eliot Engel (D-NY), the Ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee; Congressional Armenian Caucus Co-Chairmen Michael Grimm (R-NY) and Frank Pallone (D-NJ), and Representatives Tony Cardenas (D-CA), David Cicilline (D-RI), Jim Costa (D-CA), Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Scott Garrett (R-NJ), Janice Hahn (D-CA), Rush Holt (D-NJ), Linda Sanchez (D-CA), John Sarbanes (D-MD), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Brad Sherman (D-CA), Jackie Speier (D-CA), John Tierney (D-MA), Dina Titus (D-NV), and Niki Tsongas (D-MA).  Legislators, including Senators Jack Reid (D-RI) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) and Representative Linda Sanchez extended support for the program and widely publicized the event using social media.
“Armenian Americans from across the nation came together today to deliver a powerful message to Congress about our community’s enduring commitment to a truthful, just, and comprehensive resolution of the Armenian Genocide,” said Aram Hamparian, ANCA Executive Director.  “We thank all those from our community and among our coalition partners who joined us on Capitol Hill.  And, of course, we want to express our appreciation to all the legislators, Republican and Democratic, who are working to promote our nation’s values and advance our regional security interests by ending Turkey’s denial of truth and obstruction of justice for this crime against all humanity.”
In the weeks leading up to April 24th, the ANCA formally invited scores of senior Administration officials, including Secretary of State John Kerry, to attend the April 24th Capitol Hill Armenian Genocide remembrance.  On the morning of the observance, after weeks of consideration, the State Department informed the ANCA that, as a matter of policy, the Obama Administration had decided not to participate in the event, or even to arrange for a single official to be present at the Congressional program.  The State Department remains set, however, over ANCA’s objections, to send U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Francis Ricciardone to speak at an April 26th Washington, DC conference of the ATAA, a group devoted, in large part, to the denial of the Armenian Genocide.
As in years past, the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues – co-chaired by Representatives Grimm and Pallone – was joined by Armenian American organizations, the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia, and the Office of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic in hosting the event.  In addition to remarks by legislators, powerful speeches of solidarity with the global movement for a just resolution of the Armenian Genocide were offered by Armenia’s Ambassador to the U.S., Tatoul Markarian, and Republic of Nagorno Karabakh Representative Robert Avetisyan.
The program’s opening prayer was offered by Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, the Legate of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America, and the benediction was given by Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Prelate of the Armenian Apostolic Church of the Eastern U.S., who, once again this year, also opened the April 24th session of the U.S. House with a prayer broadcast nationwide on C-SPAN.  As has become a tradition in recent years, the reach of the program was multiplied by social media, with Senators and citizens alike posting photos, tweeting impressions, and emailing updates throughout the event.

The hunt for Misha: Bomb investigators search for mysterious ‘bald, red-bearded Armenian man’ accused of radicalizing Tamerlan

t3As the investigation into why and how the Boston bombers unleashed their deadly attacks continues, the focus has centered to an elusive and mysterious Muslim convert known only as Misha.

Family members of Tamerlan Tsarnaev describe Misha as the guiding influence in the elder bomber developing radicalized views – but to date it is believed that law enforcement and the media have failed to find him.

Speculation as to who Misha is wildly varies, with some suggesting he is the mastermind behind the marathon bombings while others think that he could be a Russian spy – sent to identify and keep tabs on young men like Tamerlan who are at risk of turning to militant Islam.

All that is known about him is that he is an Armenian man in his 30s with distinctive red beard and that he has disappeared – no longer living in the Cambridge, Massachusetts area.

However, family members have been telling reporters that in the years before the Boston marathon bombings, Tamerlan, 26, fell under the strong influence of a new friend, a Christian who converted to Islam and who steered the religiously apathetic young man towards adopting strong Islamic views.

Bankrupt Greece announces it IS pursuing claim against Germany for reparations for Nazi occupation

gr2Greece is planning to pursue a long-dormant claim for reparations from Germany over Nazi occupation during World War Two, it emerged today.

Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos told parliament today that the government was willing to ‘exhaust every means available’ in its claim.

News of the debt-stricken country’s bid for reparations will add to the already strained relationship with Berlin, which foots most of the bill for Greece’s 240-billion euro rescue.

Germany, whose forces occupied Greece in World War Two, says it has already paid all reparations owed.

gr3Mr Avramopoulos said today that the Greek Finance Ministry has compiled a report after studying documents spanning more than six decades.

It will be submitted to Greece’s legal advisers and then Athens will decide how to officially press its claim, he said.

Mr Avramopoulos did not say how much would be sought.

Mr Avramopoulos said it was wrong to link the issue to the debt crisis.

Bizarre whirlpool appears in Latvian river sucking everything in its path into watery vortex

r1A monstrous whirlpool has appeared in the Baltic state of Latvia swallowing everything dragged towards it.

A seven-minute clip of what looks like a vortex in action was apparently captured after a river burst its banks in the south-east of the country.

It captures huge blocks of ice and mud heading towards the whirlpool before disappearing underneath the water’s surface.

More than 220,000 people have already watched the video in less than 48 hours on YouTube.

‘Does anyone else wanna throw on a scuba suit and see where this goes?’ asked one user.

Others commented it could be a sinkhole hidden underneath the river.

Military Says Guantanamo Hunger Strike Rises to 92

g1A U.S. military spokesman says the number of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay has been raised to 92 based on evaluations by medical personnel at the U.S. base in Cuba.

The new figure is up by eight prisoners from a day earlier and represents more than half of the 166 men held there.

Lt. Col. Samuel House says the military arrived at the new figure Wednesday because doctors have been able to evaluate the prisoners more closely after moving them to single cells out of a communal area. That move sparked a brief clash between guards and prisoners on April 13.

Rescuers use massive strips of cloth as escape chutes after Bangladeshi textile factory collapses killing at least 96 people

b2An eight-storey building housing several garment factories collapsed this morning in Bangladesh, killing at least 83 people and trapping many more in the rubble.

Rescuers used massive strips of cloth as escape chutes from the textile factories to help the workers escape the devastation.

Fire fighters and army personnel worked frantically through the morning at the Rana Plaza building in Savar, 30 km (19 miles) outside Dhaka, to rescue people trapped inside.

An official at a control room set up to provide information about the missing and injured said more than 700 people were injured.

The collapse happened about 8:30 a.m. and since garment factories in the area routinely work 24 hours a day, it appeared likely that the five housed in the building were staffed at the time.

Mohammad Asaduzzaman, in charge of the area’s police station, said factory owners appeared to have ignored a warning not to allow their workers into the building after a crack was detected in the block on Tuesday.

One fireman said that about 2,000 people were in the building when the upper floors jolted down on top of each other.

Buildings in the crowded city of Dhaka are sometimes erected without permission and many do not comply with construction regulations.

ANCA RESPONDS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA’S REFUSAL TO HONOR HIS PLEDGE TO RECOGNIZE THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

ANCA RESPONDS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA'S REFUSAL TO HONOR HIS PLEDGE TO RECOGNIZE THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDEWASHINGTON, DC – Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Executive Director issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s April 24th “Armenian Remembrance Day” message, which once against stops short of properly characterizing the crime as ‘genocide.’
“Sadly, President Obama chose today not to lead, but rather to follow Ankara’s gag-rule on his Administration’s condemnation and commemoration of the Armenian Genocide. His public retreat, under Turkish pressure, comes despite his own pledges to acknowledge this crime and our government’s record, dating back more than half a century, of having recognized the Armenian Genocide as a clear case of genocide.”
“Our President’s complicity in Turkey’s denial of truth and its ongoing obstruction of justice will not derail our progress toward a truthful, fair, and comprehensive international resolution of Turkey’s still unpunished crime against the Armenian nation.”
The full text of President Obama’s statement is provided below.
Statement by the President on Armenian Remembrance Day
Today we commemorate the Meds Yeghern and honor those who perished in one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century. Ninety-eight years ago, 1.5 million Armenians were massacred or marched to their deaths in the final days of the Ottoman Empire. We pause to reflect on the lives extinguished and remember the unspeakable suffering that occurred. In so doing, we are joined by millions across the world and in the United States, where it is solemnly commemorated by our states, institutions, communities, and families. We also remind ourselves of our commitment to ensure that such dark chapters of history are not repeated.
I have consistently stated my own view of what occurred in 1915, and my view has not changed. A full, frank, and just acknowledgement of the facts is in all of our interests. Nations grow stronger by acknowledging and reckoning with painful elements of the past, thereby building a foundation for a more just and tolerant future. We appreciate this lesson in the United States, as we strive to reconcile some of the darkest moments in our own history. We recognize those courageous Armenians and Turks who have already taken this path, and encourage more to do so, with the backing of their governments, and mine.
The history and legacy of the Armenian people is marked by an indomitable spirit, and a great resiliency in the face of tremendous adversity and suffering. The United States is stronger for the contributions Armenian-Americans have made to our society, our culture, and our communities. In small measure we return that contribution by supporting the Armenian people as they work toward building a nation that would make their ancestors proud: one that cherishes democracy and respect for human liberty and dignity.
Today we stand with Armenians everywhere in recalling the horror of the Meds Yeghern, honoring the memory of those lost, and affirming our enduring commitment to the people of Armenia.

US team questions Boston suspects’ parents

4ՌԴ-ի Ամերիկյան դեսպանատան ներկայացուցչությունը հարցաքննել է ԲոստոնÕA delegation from the US embassy in Moscow interviewed the parents of the Boston marathon bombing suspects in the Russian North Caucasus region of Dagestan, but were told the two brothers had not contacted local Islamist groups, officials said Wednesday.

The parents of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are currently living in Dagestan, an overwhelmingly Muslim region on the Caspian Sea where the family briefly lived before leaving for the United States.
“The FBI is receiving cooperation from the Russian government in its investigation of the Boston marathon bombing,” a US embassy official, who asked not to be named, told AFP.
“A group from the US Embassy in Moscow travelled to Dagestan yesterday (Tuesday) as part of this cooperation with the Russian government to interview the parents.”
The official declined to say whether the delegation was still in Dagestan and if the interviews had already taken place.
However a Dagestan security source told an AFP correspondent in its main city Makhachkala that interviews with both parents took place overnight and involved representatives of the FBI.
