The estimated value of the various wines up for auction ranges from a modest 15 euros to 2,200 euros ($2,800) for a Petrus 1990, Drouot said in a statement.
The Elysee Palace’s cellar is selling the wines in order to raise funds for a refurbishment, it said.
All those on offer, largely Burgundy and Bordeaux, but also including wines from the Loire and Alsace, have been served at the table of the French president at one time or another.
The bottles, due to be auctioned on May 30 and 31, will be replaced through the purchase of other less pricey wines, the auction house added.

World’s first web page recreated 20 years on

2Կվերականգնվի աշխարհի առաջին վեբ կայքըThe world’s first web page will be dragged out of cyberspace and restored for today’s Internet browsers as part of a project to celebrate 20 years of the Web, organisers said on Tuesday.

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) said it had begun recreating the website that launched that World Wide Web, as well as the hardware that made the groundbreaking technology possible.
The world’s first website was about the technology itself, according to CERN, allowing early browsers to learn about the new system and create their own web pages.
The project will allow future generations to understand the origin and importance of the Web and its impact on modern life, CERN web manager Dan Noyes told AFP.
The project was launched to mark the 20th anniversary of CERN making the World Wide Web available to the world for free.

Willem-Alexander takes Dutch throne after mother abdicates

130429160345-dutch-royal-family-13-horizontal-gallery(CNN) — Willem-Alexander became the first Dutch king in more than 120 years on Tuesday as his mother, Queen Beatrix abdicated the throne, ending 33 years as the country’s monarch.

The 75-year-old monarch handed over power in a constitutionally ordained ceremony in the Mozes Hall of the royal palace in Amsterdam. The transfer became official as she signed the “instrument of abdication” that means she will now be known as Princess Beatrix.

Cheers erupted from crowds gathered outside the palace who were watching proceedings on a big screen as the queen signed the document. CNN’s Max Foster reported that many in the Netherlands had been partying well into the night.

King Willem-Alexander later appeared on the balcony of the palace with his wife and three daughters, along with his mother. He told the crowd he was “grateful for your confidence and support” as he started his reign.

In a televised address Monday night, Queen Beatrix said she knows the new royal couple will have the loving trust of the nation.

“My oldest son will now take over a beautiful task which is filled with great responsibility,” the queen said. “I am absolutely convinced that Willem-Alexander will be committed in faithful devotion to be a good king and to do what a good King is asked to do.”

Beatrix stepped down on the national holiday known as Queen’s Day, an opportunity for people across the Netherlands to dress up and party. The investiture of the new king before a joint session of parliament later in the day will be the high point of a year of celebrations marking the end of the Napoleonic occupation in 1813.

The queen announced her abdication in January, saying it was time for a new generation to lead.

“I have always considered it as an extraordinary privilege to be able to put a big part of my life at the service of our country and in accordance with my task to add substance to my kingship,” said Beatrix, who acceded to the throne when her mother, Queen Juliana, abdicated in 1980.

Dutch Queen Beatrix to abdicate throne

“Until today, this beautiful task has given me a lot of satisfaction. It is inspiring to feel close to people, to sympathize in grievances and share times of joy and national pride.”

The Dutch media has speculated that the queen was abdicating to spend more time with her second son Friso, who was injured in an avalanche at an Austrian ski resort last year. He remains in a coma in a London hospital.

A king for the 21st century

The 46-year-old new king was educated in Wales and Holland, where he earned a history degree at Leiden University. He served in the Dutch Royal Navy from 1985 to 1987. As Prince of Orange — the title given to the person first in line to the Dutch throne — he was interested in sustainability and innovation.

He is married to Máxima, who was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She has a degree in economics and has worked for HSBC and Deutsche Bank. The couple have been married for 11 years and have three daughters.

Last week, the couple gave their first joint TV interview in which Willem set out how he intended to rule.

“I want to be a king who is first of all traditional, built on the tradition of my predecessors, who stands for continuity and also for stability in the country … but also a king who in the 21st century can bind together and represent society as a whole.”

Asked how he intended to do that, Willem told the NOS state broadcaster: “By being present where you think people need support or help, by giving extra attention and presence to worthwhile events and by supporting people who are in need.”

Notable absence

One notable absence at Tuesday’s ceremony will be the new queen’s father, Jorge Zorreguieta, who was a minister during the 1976-1983 Argentinian military dictatorship.

Maxima said her family would not attend her swearing-in as queen because of her father’s controversial past.

“This is a constitutional event, when my husband becomes king and my father doesn’t belong there, especially if there are issues,” the princess told NOS. “He remains my father, we still enjoy our private moments.”

Peruvian authorities have managed to rescue five women from the Pacific Ocean after

The women were found clinging to the basket of the balloon on Sunday after eight hours in the freezing water.

The women have been taken to hospital, but a police helicopter and navy boats are still searching for the pilot and another man.

None of the people aboard the flight were wearing life jackets.  The Interior Minister blasted the balloon’s owner, Globos Peru SAC, for failing to provide flotation devices and not equipping it with a GPS tracker.

Reports suggest the missing men may have tried to swim to shore for help. All of the people on board are believed to be Peruvian.

Volunteers also combed the area south of the capital Lima in fishing boats and jet skis.

‘Hopefully we can find them as soon as possible,’ Minister Wilfredo Pedraza told a state-run TV station. ‘All we know is that one of them tried to swim to the coast. The search will continue, even at night, until they are rescued.’

Hundreds of tourists stuck 1,000ft up at the top of the Shard after lifts are grounded by fire alarms

View from The Shard, London. free picAs the tallest skyscraper in  Western Europe, the Shard offers breath-taking views of London.

But for some who were stuck there yesterday, the view hardly compensated for them being stuck at the top while a fire alarm went off downstairs.

More than 200 visitors to western Europe’s tallest building, The Shard, were stranded 800ft up yesterday after a lift stopped working due to a fire scare.

Tickets for the £2billion building’s viewing platforms cost £24.95 for an adult and £18.95 for a child – and while the delay meant visitors got an extended view, that did not appease their fury at the long wait for their descent.

This automatically grounded the lifts – and some visitors claimed they were not allowed to use the stairs to return to ground level, The Independent reported.

Bankrupt Greece announces it IS pursuing claim against Germany for reparations for Nazi occupation

gr2Greece is planning to pursue a long-dormant claim for reparations from Germany over Nazi occupation during World War Two, it emerged today.

Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos told parliament today that the government was willing to ‘exhaust every means available’ in its claim.

News of the debt-stricken country’s bid for reparations will add to the already strained relationship with Berlin, which foots most of the bill for Greece’s 240-billion euro rescue.

Germany, whose forces occupied Greece in World War Two, says it has already paid all reparations owed.

gr3Mr Avramopoulos said today that the Greek Finance Ministry has compiled a report after studying documents spanning more than six decades.

It will be submitted to Greece’s legal advisers and then Athens will decide how to officially press its claim, he said.

Mr Avramopoulos did not say how much would be sought.

Mr Avramopoulos said it was wrong to link the issue to the debt crisis.

Bizarre whirlpool appears in Latvian river sucking everything in its path into watery vortex

r1A monstrous whirlpool has appeared in the Baltic state of Latvia swallowing everything dragged towards it.

A seven-minute clip of what looks like a vortex in action was apparently captured after a river burst its banks in the south-east of the country.

It captures huge blocks of ice and mud heading towards the whirlpool before disappearing underneath the water’s surface.

More than 220,000 people have already watched the video in less than 48 hours on YouTube.

‘Does anyone else wanna throw on a scuba suit and see where this goes?’ asked one user.

Others commented it could be a sinkhole hidden underneath the river.

Germany fines Google for privacy violations

3Գերմանիան տուգանել է Google-ինGerman authorities said on Monday they had fined Google for illegally collecting massive amounts of personal data including emails, passwords and photos while setting up its disputed Street View service.

The data protection office in the northern city of Hamburg said it had slapped the US Internet giant with a 145,000-euro ($189,000) penalty for privacy violations on what it called a nearly unprecedented scale.

It found that while specially equipped Google vehicles took city snapshots between 2008 and 2010 for its Street View function, which supplements its standard map service, they had also picked up data from unsecured wireless networks.

“Among the information gathered in the drive-bys were significant amounts of personal data of varying quality. For example emails, passwords, photos and chat protocols were collected,” the Hamburg authorities said in a statement.

Lufthansa cancels almost all flights due to strike

LufthansaGerman airline Lufthansa said Monday it has cancelled most of its domestic, European and long-haul flights at six German airports due to strike action by ground personnel and some cabin crew.

Out of nearly 1,800 planned flights on Monday, “we will operate 20 short and medium-range flights and 12 long-distance services,” a spokesman told AFP.

Services union Verdi called the strike after three rounds of pay talks with management ended without any agreement.

Verdi is demanding a 5.2-percent pay increase for 33,000 Lufthansa ground staff, plus employees of various subsidiaries as well as cabin crew members who are Verdi members.

The escalating pay dispute threatens to cause transport chaos across Europe’s top economy and comes a month after Lufthansa was forced to cancel nearly 700 out of a total 1,800 flights due to half a day of warning strikes.

Thousands take to streets of Paris to protest against legalisation of gay marriage set to pass this week

f2Thousands of opponents of gay marriage marched through Paris yesterday in a last-ditch protest before a law allowing same-sex union and adoption is passed tomorrow.

About 50,000, most of them older people and families with children, waving pink and blue flags massed behind a banner reading: ‘All born of a mum and a dad.’

Although it ended peacefully, riot police had been on standby after a series of violent demonstrations outside the French parliament earlier this month.

Yesterday’s march had been hastily organised after the law’s passage was sped up to avoid a big rally set for next week.

‘We warned the president back in November that we would not give up and that we would do everything to stop this law being passed, or to get it repealed if it is adopted,’ said protest organiser Alberic Dumon.

Numerous opinion polls have shown that a majority of French people support gay marriage but far fewer agree that homosexuals should be allowed to adopt children.

Senior religious leaders have condemned the same-sex marriage and adoption laws and many were expected to join yesterday’s protest.

The extremist arm of the movement has seen public stalking of government ministers and a spate of homophobic attacks around the country.

And in January, around 350,000 protesters massed under the Eiffel Tower and tore up the lawns beneath it.

Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoe, one of few French public officials who is openly gay, headed a rival march yesterday in favour of same-sex marriage and said that it was too late for anything to derail the law.

Hollande, who is grappling with the lowest popularity ratings of any recent French president as unemployment surges above 10 per cent, hoped to win some glory from passing a reform already in place in a dozen other countries.

Unemployed Sicilian man ‘murdered his parish priest because he couldn’t bear to listen to any more sermons’

m1A Sicilian accused of murdering his parish priest allegedly told police he couldn’t stand to listen to any more of his sermons.

Michele di Stefano, the padre of a small hamlet in Western Sicily, used his homilies to comment on the abundant misdeeds of his parishioners, which he knew of from their confessions.

The elderly priest reportedly barely bothered to conceal the identity of the offenders, raising heckles among villagers in Ummari, near Trapani.

He was found dead in his bed in the church rectory, after being beaten with the handle of a hoe.

Antonio Incandela, 33, allegedly told prosecutors that he had come up with the idea ‘to teach the priest a lesson’ after a sermon in which the priest described ‘bad apples’ in the community.

The father-of-one insists he did not mean to kill the priest, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

He allegedly claimed he had been aiming for his legs but missed in the dark, only realising his mistake afterwards.

He then stole the priest’s bank cards to make it look like a robbery, he is alleged to have said.

Incandela, who is unemployed, was caught after he used the priest’s bank card at a cashpoint, police said.

He has been formally charged with his murder.

British driver killed and dozens of tourists injured as coach careers off cliff in French Alps and explodes in fireball

այրված ավտոբուսOne Briton was killed and up to 18 others injured when a coach exploded in a fireball after crashing in the French Alps yesterday.

More than 50 UK nationals were on their way home from resorts around Alpe d’Huez when the coach veered off the road after suspected brake failure.

It smashed into rocks shortly after 2pm before bursting into flames seconds later as passengers leapt to escape. The British driver was killed in the crash.

A number of passengers escaped from the burning wreckage by jumping out of smashed windows, and at least four of the injured were in a serious condition, according to French authorities.

Two helicopters were scrambled to the scene and airlifted the more seriously injured to hospital in Grenoble, while firemen battled to put out the flames.

A local police spokesman said: ‘There was apparently a problem with the coach’s brakes. The driver seems to have lost control on a steep bend in the road and his vehicle crashed into rocks.’

He added it was a miracle so many had survived the crash, thought to have happened towards the bottom of a mountain.
