Large Oil Reserves Discovered in Brazil

Oil Platforms Off The Coast of Brazil

Brazil’s National Petroleum Agency says large reserves of oil are located off the coast of the northeastern state of Sergipe, representing a new frontier in petroleum development in Latin America’s biggest country.

Agency director Magda Chambriard said Wednesday that numbers on how much oil is in the reserves would not be announced before 2016.

Most of the country’s oil production is concentrated in southeastern Brazil, where over the past several years billions of barrels of oil have been discovered in offshore reserves, mostly in deep, pre-salt fields.

On Monday, a consortium including Shell, Total, two Chinese firms and Brazil’s state-run petroleum company Petrobras won the right to develop a field off the cost of Rio de Janeiro that could hold up to 12 billion barrels of oil.

Chinese man climbs high voltage pylon and spends five hours up there after being overwhelmed by pressure of debt

A Chinese man spent five hours on top of a high voltage pylon after the pressure of being in debt became too much.

Peng Hsieh, 21, had reportedly cracked after borrowing money from several local people including his family to fund his education and then finding he was unable to get a job and couldn’t pay it back.

The young man had climbed up 24-metre high voltage tower in Foshan, in Guangdong province, in southeast China.

He was spotted by a local who raised the alarm with the electricity officials who cut off the power supply.

In total he remained at the top of the pylon for five hours doing his gymnastic performances and singing popular Chinese songs, ignoring requests from family and friends to come down.

Only towards the end after having stripped off his shirt and his shoes did he finally agreed to come down when some of his creditors confirmed they would no longer pursue him so rigorously to get the money back.

His father Yang said: ‘If he kills himself nobody will get anything back, they just need to be patient.’

Peng Hsieh is likely to be fined though for the stunt so they may have to wait a while longer than was planned.

Villagers in South China Turn on Police; 27 Hurt

china-protesters

Villagers in southern China attacked policemen who were seeking a pair of suspects, injuring 27 officers, state media said Wednesday.

The injured officers were hospitalized in the Yunnan provincial capital of Kunming, including one in critical condition, the Xinhua News Agency said.

The violence took place after police traveled to the province’s Jincheng township on Tuesday looking for two people suspected of illegal detention and intentional injury, Xinhua said.

As the officers were leaving the area, about 200 residents blocked the highway in the village of Guangji, surrounding 11 officers and three police vehicles and preventing them from leaving.

Xinhua said the last 13 officers held were unable to leave the village until Wednesday afternoon. It said no injuries among villagers were reported and made no mention of arrests.

It wasn’t clear why the villagers were angered or what was behind the alleged crimes the two suspects were being sought for.

Saudi Clerics Protest Women Driving, Blame US

Սաուդյան Արաբիա,կանայք

Around 150 clerics and religious scholars have rallied outside the Saudi king’s palace, protesting against women seeking the right to drive.

The senior religious leaders said the United States was behind a campaign calling for women to drive on Oct. 26 that claims to have garnered 16,000 signatures.

Since the campaign launched last month, Saudi women have been uploading videos of themselves driving.

Though no law bans women from driving, women are not issued licenses in the ultraconservative kingdom. No women have been arrested trying to drive in recent weeks. However, in years past, women were charged with disturbing public order.

The scholars who protested Tuesday in the Red Sea city of Jiddah were quoted in official local media saying that Saudi rulers are doing nothing to stop the campaign.

Staff at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque say they asked the singer to leave the compound after her actions were considered to be at odds with the ‘sanctity’ of the site.

Photos posted on her Instagram account at the weekend show the 25-year-old posing on white marble wearing a head-to-toe hooded black jumpsuit.

But today it emerged that Rhianna and her team was not given permission to take photos at the mosque, the main place of worship for Friday gathering and Eid prayers.

UAE-Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The mosque, which is the largest in the UAE and can hold more than 40,000 people, released a statement, and although it does not name Rhianna, it refers to a ‘recent incident, involving a singer.’

It said the singer ‘left without entering the mosque, after being asked to do so, due to the fact that she had taken some pictures that do not conform with the conditions and regulations put in place by the Centre’s management to regulate visits in a way that takes the status and sanctity of the mosque into

consideration.’

Many of her fans attacked the singer for the photos which have since appeared on websites across the world.

‘Rihanna may look gorgeous and all but she’s covering her head out of fashion not out of respect for the mosque,’ wrote one user.

Rihanna hasn’t publicly responded to the actions by staff at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque which is a major tourist site in the United Arab Emirates’ capital.

Tainted Liquor Kills 32 in Northern India; 50 Ill

A batch of toxic bootleg liquor killed at least 32 people, mostly poor laborers, and sickened dozens more in northern India, police said Saturday.

Police officer Arvibnd Sen said the victims bought pouches of tainted liquor Thursday from a shop in Adampur village in Uttar Pradesh state.

They started falling sick immediately after drinking the liquor and were taken to local hospitals. Sen said Saturday that 32 people were dead by Friday night.

He said another 50 people were treated in hospitals, and some of them have gone blind because of the toxic brew.

Police arrested the shopkeeper, whose son also died after drinking the tainted liquor, Sen said. He said eight state government officials and four police officers have been suspended as authorities investigate the deaths and possible negligence of duty by the officials in allowing the liquor to be sold.

Deaths from drinking illegally brewed alcohol are common in India because the poor cannot afford licensed liquor. Illicit liquor is often spiked with chemicals such as pesticides to increase potency.

Chinese couple face jail after selling their baby daughter for £5,000 to buy an iPhone

iPhone,չինաստան

A young Chinese couple are facing many years in jail after allegedly selling their baby daughter to raise money for an iPhone and other luxury goods.

The couple, identified only as Miss Zhang and Mr Teng, are said to have placed anonymous advertisements in newspapers suggesting they would be willing to part with their baby – unborn at that stage – in exchange for 50,000 yuan (about £5,000).

Police in Shanghai have charged the couple with human trafficking after accepting money for the baby, who was born at home and still only weeks, or months old, when sold.

Having received the money, which was deposited in their bank account, the couple went out on a spending spree, using part of the proceeds to buy an iPhone, State media reported today.

The unemployed couple, who have two other children, were also accused of using the money to purchase a number of luxury goods.

They are understood to have told prosecutors that they were acting in their daughter’s best interests, claiming they had hoped to find a home for her with a financially stable family who would be able to provide her with an eduction.

But prosecutors said they believed the couple’s bank records show they had hatched a ‘sinister conspiracy’ to profit from the sale of the baby.

In an attempt to hide that they were behind the sale of a child, the couple tried to conceal the fact that Miss Zhang was pregnant and she had even gone to the length of giving birth at home.

They are said to have told neighbours that the baby bump during Miss Zhang’s pregnancy was a tumour.

Will the world end in 2032? Ukrainian astronomers discover massive asteroid that could hit the earth with the power of 2,500 nuclear bombs

աստերոիդ

The world as we know it could end on August 26, 2032.

A 1,300-foot wide asteroid is headed toward Earth and could strike the planet with the force of 2,500 nuclear warheads in 19 years, Ukrainian astronomers have shockingly revealed.

Crimean Astrophysical Observatory found the massive asteroid, called 2013 TV135, last weekend and the international scientific community has already rated it as one of the two most dangerous asteroids ever recorded.

Still, the chances of the object striking Earth are very low, estimated at 1 in 63,000. That means there’s a 99.9984 percent chance that life on the planet will continue as normal.

If the asteroid misses, it is likely to pass very close to Earth – within 1million miles of the planet’s orbit, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports.

As a result, NASA has deemed the object ‘potentially hazardous.’

Scientists have also given it a danger rating of 1 out of 10 on the Torino Scale. Only one other asteroid has been given a rating of 1. The risk for all others has been judged 0, negligible.

If 2013 TV135 were to collide with Earth, it is estimated to impact with 2,500 megatons of explosive power. The standard U.S. Minute Man II missiles carries a nuclear warhead with an explosive power of a little over 1 megaton.

The effects of an impact would be catastrophic, especially if it struck a populated area.

The asteroid, however, is much smaller than the interplanetary object that hit Earth and killed off the dinosaurs 65million years ago. That asteroid was estimated to be 6 miles in diameter.

After Ukrainian scientists spotted the object last weekend, astronomers at observatories in Spain, Italy and Siberia, Russia, confirmed the existence of 2013 TV135.

The asteroid will be closer in 2024, allowing scientists to better examine its orbit and where it would be likely to hit.

Protests in Canada turn violent

canada-protests,ցույցեր

At least 40 people were arrested Thursday in New Brunswick, Canada, when protests over gas exploration turned violent, according to authorities.

At least one shot was fired by someone other than police, and at least five police vehicles were set on fire, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement.

“The RCMP has worked diligently with all parties involved in hopes for a peaceful resolution. Those efforts have not been successful. Tensions were rising, and serious criminal acts are being committed,” said Constable Jullie Rogers-Marsh of the New Brunswick RCMP.

Protesters are reportedly angry about the government and shale gas companies moving forward with work in the area.

Police said they were investigating suspected explosive devices at the scene. Molotov cocktails were thrown, they said.

Amy Winehouse’s memory could be tarnished as ‘nude photos of drugged-up singer’ are offered for sale online

Amy Winehouse,Ամի Ուայնհաուս

Two years after the tragic death of Amy Winehouse, nude photos of the star have reportedly been offered for sale to a website.

X-rated photos of the star taken during a drugs binge were reportedly offered for sale last week to entertainment website RadarOnline.com.

The images were allegedly emailed to the website.

The Back to Black singer had been photographed hours before the images were taken, in a confused state outside a London nightclub at 5am with white powder around her nostrils.

The supplier of the images told RadarOnline.com: ‘The photographs in question have never been published and no one knows that it exists.’

Radar Online said it has decided not to publish the images.

The 27-year-old singer, who released her first album Frank, when she was 19, was found dead in her Camden home in 2011 following years of drugs and alcohol abuse.

An investigation earlier this year concluded that Amy had died of accidental alcohol poisoning.

Melbourne Airport locked down by police after a kangaroo hops its way into the terminal pharmacy

Police were forced to lock down part of an Australian terminal building after a kangaroo surprised shoppers by creeping into a pharmacy.

The marsupial, who was pictured in the skincare aisle of the store, probably made his way to the right part of the Melbourne Airport – he had been hit by a car outside and suffered minor injuries.

The eastern grey male, who was nicknamed Cyrus, had to be sedated and carried out of the airport by wildlife volunteers.

As he made his way through the terminal, astonished passengers hurried out of its path.

Cyrus was taken to a nearby vet’s where his injuries were assessed.

It is not the first time a kangaroo has caused a stir at Melbourne Airport.

In January a marsupial had to be shot with a tranquiliser gun after leading security guards and police on a chase around the terminal car park.

Typhoon Wipha hits Tokyo area, killing at least 17

At least 17 people have died and hundreds of flights have been canceled as Typhoon Wipha pummeled the Tokyo area on Wednesday.

A local government official in Oshima, a small island 120 km (75 miles) south of Tokyo, said that a majority of the people died after heavy rain triggered flooding and landslides that blocked roads and crushed houses.

Rescuers were unable to reach about some people in the area hit by landslides.

More than 500 domestic and international flights were canceled at Tokyo’s Narita and Haneda airports and the national rail operator halted bullet train services in central and northern Japan.

The typhoon is moving north along the Pacific coast of Japan and is expected to reach the northernmost island of Hokkaido by late Wednesday.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the main electricity supplier in Tokyo and central Japan, said blackouts affected more than 56,000 households.

Chinese official removed from post after being given a piggy back through typhoon flood waters because he ‘didn’t want to ruin his shoes’

Chinese official- on the back of a resident

A Chinese official was removed from his post after he was pictured accepting a piggy back ride from a resident of a typhoon hit city through flood water – because he didn’t want to ruin his shoes.

A picture of the official, known only as Wang, sparked outrage when it was posted on Chinese social media website Sina Weibo.

The photo was taken as Wang visited the city of Yuyao, in Zhejiang province, as the area suffered widespread flooding after being hit by a devastating typhoon which left 10 people dead.

According to China’s state-run news agency Xinhua, a caption posted alongside the photograph claimed that Wang was being carried because he was wearing a pair of expensive shoes made of cloth.

But the Sanqishi Township government, which employed the official, claimed that he had been set to remove his shoes to walk barefoot to a flooding victim’s house.

But according to MSN reports, despite Wang’s insistence that he would walk, the local picked him up anyway and carried him through the water.

Whether the official had intended to walk as suggested by reports or not, the online fuss created by the picture saw him removed from his post as director of the township’s construction office.

Hundreds of thousands of people had to be evacuated from their homes after Typhoon Fitow hit southeastern China last week.

Dozens dead as magnitude-7.1 earthquake hits the Philippines

երկրաշարժ

A magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck central Philippines on Tuesday, leaving at least 49 people dead and rattling many who were celebrating a religious holiday.

The quake, which struck early in the morning, crumbled a number of buildings and sent panicked people streaming into the streets, witnesses said.

At least 15 were killed in the city of Cebu, four were killed in the province of Bohol and one died in the province of Siquijor, said Maj. Reynaldo Balido,a spokesman for the Philippines Office of Civil Defense.

Most of those killed were hit by falling rubble, the Philippines News Agency reported.

7.1 earthquake rocks Philippines

At least 33 people were missing, and authorities were checking into reports of people trapped in collapsed buildings in Cebu and Bohol, the agency reported. Another 164 were injured, authorities said.

The quake was centered about 385 miles (619 kilometers) south-southeast of Manila, near Catigbian, and its depth was 12 miles (20 kilometers), according to the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Maryann Zamora, a communications specialist with the charity World Vision, reported seeing glass and concrete in the streets of Cebu City, about 37 miles (60 kilometers) north of the epicenter.

“Right now we are in the streets because it is unsafe to be inside,” she said by phone, her voice shaking as one of more than 10 aftershocks hit. “Tell everyone to pray for us.”

Tuesday was a national holiday — the beginning of the Muslim festival of Eid ul Adha.

There was no widespread threat of a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said, but it warned that earthquakes this large can sometimes cause tsunamis within 61 miles (100 kilometers) of the epicenter.

Catigbian, which has a population of 23,000, is in the province of Bohol.

Tourist Robert Michael Poole said he was riding a bike in Bohol when the earthquake struck and cracked the road right in front of him.

“It was very strong,” Poole said. “I live in Tokyo. I am used to earthquakes. But this one was very strong. It shocked a lot of people here.”

Poole said he was able to move around and document some of the destruction, including a giant church that was decimated.

“Lucky thing is that it is a holiday here today and it happened at a time when nobody was in the church,” Poole said

Temple stampede leaves 89 dead in India

india-stampedeA stampede outside a temple in central India killed at least 89 people Sunday, authorities said.

The incident occurred on a bridge over the Sindh River while pilgrims were headed to the temple for a Hindu festival.

“The death toll could go much higher as about 25,000 people were present on the bridge at that time,” said D.K. Arya, a local deputy police inspector.

A rumor that the bridge was about to collapse caused panicked people to stampede, police told CNN sister network CNN-IBN.

Many people jumped off the bridge into the river, Arya said.

The stampede occurred at a temple in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

Wealthy Serbian looking for love posts hilarious photographs showing off his wealth (and fluffy pink dressing gown) in a bid to find young bride

Don Milisav Juan Gonzales Brzi9

A wealthy Serbian bachelor has been posting pictures of himself in his mansion in the hope that his wealth will lure in a lady.

In a note attached to the photos, the man who calls himself Don Milisav Juan Gonzales Brzi, says: ‘To all unmarried ones who would like to spend their life by my side and within all the beauties of my home.

‘Please look below at all the magic of my home that I have decorated with taste, perhaps just for YOU.’
The bizarre snaps have been circulating on Croatian, Bosnian and Serbian websites and have since gone viral.

In them the grey-haired singleton is seen standing awkwardly in his bathroom, ‘relaxing’ on a bed and kneeling in what appears to be a hallway.

Mr Brzi claims to be 39-years-old, living in St Petersburg and looking for a much younger 16-20-year-old for a relationship and marriage.

Artwork and painted frescoes decorate nearly every wall in his home, including in both of the huge bathrooms.

Whoever takes up his offer will have to deal with the cold weather, as temperatures can plummet as low as -5C in winter.

Perhaps the young lady in question could borrow one of Brzi’s fur coats to keep warm in, as he appears to have several.

Despite appearing on Eastern European websites months ago, it is not known whether or not Mr Brzi ever found his dream nubile bride.

Nobel highlights Syria with Peace Prize to chemical weapons watchdog

mideast-syria-nobel-peace-prize

The Nobel Peace Prize has turned the global spotlight back on the conflict in Syria.

The prize committee in Oslo, Norway, awarded it Friday to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the international chemical weapons watchdog helping to eliminate the Syrian army’s stockpiles of poison gas.

Its inspectors have just begun working in the active war zone, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee said it hopes the award offers “strong support” to them as they face arduous and life-threatening tasks.

But the OPCW did not receive the prize primarily because of its work in Syria.

The award to the OPCW was intended in part as a message to countries still harboring chemical weapons to get rid of them, committee chairman Thorbjorn Jagland said.

In the lead-up to the prize announcement Friday, the global media speculated that an individual would win, possibly Congolese physician Denis Mukwege, who treats victims of gang rape, or Malala Yousafzai, the teen education activist from Pakistan whom a Taliban assassin shot for her work to promote education for girls.

Other large organizations that have won it include the United Nations, Doctors Without Borders, U.N. peacekeeping forces, the U.N. atomic energy agency, the Red Cross and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.

The Peace Prize is the fifth Nobel Prize to be awarded this week, preceded by honors in medicine, physics, chemistry and literature.

On Monday, the final Nobel Prize will be awarded in the field of economics.

A high-profile monk who played a key role in bringing Tibetan Buddhism to the West has been murdered in southwest China, police say.

Tarap Shetrup Akong, who has British citizenship , was killed along with his nephew and another man in Sichuan province on Tuesday, police in the provincial capital Chengdu said on their official account on the microblogging site Weibo.

Police said that three suspects have been captured, and that the victims were stabbed in a financial dispute.

Akong was born in Tibet in 1940 and left for exile in 1959. He founded a monastery called Samye Ling in a secluded part of Scotland.

Robbie Barnett, a Tibet expert at Columbia University in New York, said that he was known for his social as much as spiritual work.

“The bulk of his life’s work was on providing social welfare to villagers, rural communities, townspeople, nomads and monasteries in Tibet and other countries.”

Barnett said that he had great diplomatic skill and was able to maintain relationships with high-level Chinese officials without compromising his work with Tibetans on the ground.
