Spain ‘was told’ that Edward Snowden was aboard grounded Bolivian presidential plane

Edward SnowdenEuropean countries were told that NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden was aboard the plane of Bolivian president Evo Morales which was diverted to Austria, Spain claims.

According to Spain’s foreign minister the information was ‘clear’ that Snowden was inside the plane, which was grounded and searched last week.

Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo did not reveal who supplied the information, but said the decision to force the Bolivian presidential plane to make a u-turn over Europe was based on the information.

Meanwhile, Bolivian President Evo Morales is threatening to close the US embassy in La Paz after the incident.

Mr Morales has since blamed the US government for pressurising the European countries into the ban, which has caused a diplomatic furore.

Reports claimed Morales’s flight was brought down because there were suggestions that American National Security Agency (NSA) leaker, Edward Snowden, was on board, after the Bolivian president  said casually in Moscow that if Snowden was to apply for asylum, his case would be considered.

Rock-solid love: Australian woman marries a bridge in France – and even gets the mayor’s blessing

Australian woman marries a bridge in Southern FranceAn Australian woman has taken her desire for the ‘strong and silent’-type to a new extreme when she married a bridge.

Jodi Rose married Le Pont du Diable Bridge in Céret, southern France after falling head over heels for the ‘sensual’ 14th century stone structure.

Ms Rose, or Mrs Le Pont du Diable, has spent the past decade travelling the world recording the vibrations in bridge cables with contact microphones and using them to create experimental music.

After visiting dozens of bridges all over the world for her Singing Bridges musical project, she decided this was ‘The One’.

Although her new husband may struggle to express his feelings, newlywed Jodi said ‘his being is very present, and I feel at peace in his strong embrace.’

‘He makes me feel connected to the earth and draws me to rest from my endless nomadic wanderings. He is fixed, stable, rooted to the ground, while I am nomadic, transient, ever on the road.

The wedding between Jodi and Le Pont du Diable, which translates to The Devil’s Bridge, took place in front of 14 guests and was blessed by the mayor of neighbouring town Saint-Jean-de-Fos.

The pair made their vows at the groom’s entrance. Rose wore a custom bridal gown and veil, and commissioned rings for both her and the bridge.

Their union is not legally recognised in France, but Rose claims their marriage is as strong as any other.

Ms Rose, who says she is completely devoted to her new husband, have yet to explain how she determined the sex of the bridge.

Retired Italian zookeeper, 72, mauled to death by tigers he kept at closed-down zoo as he tried to feed them

italian police in tiger's cage. TurinAn elderly zookeeper was ripped to pieces and eaten by his own tigers when he went to feed them.

Mauro Lagiard, 72, was attacked from behind as he entered the enclosure at a closed-down zoo, near Turin, in northern Italy.

In a horrific scene he was dragged 100ft while his wife watched helplessly from outside the cage.

His dismembered body was later found by the tigers’ water trough, police said.

Mr Lagiard and his wife had cared for the tigers since the small animal sanctuary was closed down in 2010 at the peak of the economic crisis.

The couple lived on site near the tigers’ enclosure in a camper van.

The retired zoo keeper was ‘utterly fearless’ and devoted to the animals according to reports in the Italian media.

After hearing desperate screams his wife Carla called for medics.

But the 73-year-old, who walked with the help of two sticks, was powerless to come to her husband’s aid and could only watch in agony from outside the cage.

The tiger that attacked first was the one he loved the most, according to reports, even though the same animal had attacked him before two years ago causing him to spend eight months in hospital.

But neighbours said the animals were malnourished and aggressive. They were fed just twice a week.

They are currently in the care of vets while their fate is decided. Samir is likely to be put down, according to reports.

‘And now on platform phwoar…’ Chinese IT worker unwittingly beams porn onto giant screen at train station

An IT worker has been caught watching porn at work  – after he accidentally screened an X-rated film on to a large train station television he had just fixed.

Hundreds of passengers reportedly stopped to stare at the monitor, outside the Jilin Station in China, as the film played for at least ten minutes.

It is believed the technician had hooked his laptop up to the screen – usually used to show adverts – to fix a fault.

But once the job was completed, he apparently failed to disconnect the two devices.

It seems he then turned his attentions to the X-rated film, unaware that it was also being watched by crowds of passengers and passers by outside the station.

The Sun reports that police have questioned the worker, but as yet have not filed any charges against him.

A film has been uploaded to YouTube which shows crowds of people staring in confusion at the screen.

World’s biggest building opens in China – and the 19million sq ft complex is so huge it comes with its own artificial sun

The world’s largest building has opened in China capable of fitting 20 Sydney Opera Houses – or three Pentagons – inside.

The New Century Global Center in Chengdu, Sichuan province, is a staggering 19million sq.ft. and contains shopping centres, a Mediterranean village, a water park, an ice-skating rink, and multiple hotels.

However, visitors to the glass panelled building need not worry about the weather as the giant complex will have its own artificial sun.

The building is 500 metres long, 400 metres wide and 100 metres high, reports said.

According to Chinese officials, the New Century Global Center is the largest freestanding building in the world, and took three years to complete.

Chinese guide Liu Xun told AFP He added that the artificial sun built inside the building will provide light and heat 24 hours a day for shoppers exploring the around 400,000 sq. metres of boutiques and stores.

Maid faces three years in jail for adding urine and dirty water to her employer’s tea

tea (1)A maid faces three years in jail for adding urine and dirty wash water to her employer’s tea.

The 22-year-old who was working in Hong Kong, China, was arrested after her employer noticed the tea had strange odour.

She confronted the maid, who admitted to tampering with her drink, although the reasons are unclear.

The maid now faces a jail term for ‘administering noxious substances’ – urine and dirty laundry water are potentially hazardous to human health, reported Shanghaiist.

The identity of the maid and her employer are not known.

Last year a maid in the UAE who added urine to her employer’s tea was jailed for two months.

The 26-year-old Indonesian housemaid was found guilty of endangering the life of a family by the Dubai Court of Misdemeanours.

The maid carried out the crime in order to make the family like her, records say.

Jenny from the Eastern Bloc: Lopez forced to apologize for singing happy birthday to brutal Turkmen dictator accused of torture

Jennifer Lopez performing in Turkmenistan1Jennifer Lopez was forced to apologize after a concert in Turkmenistan on Satruday night because she sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to the repressive dictator of the country’s brutal oppressive regime.
Lopez reportedly changed into a traditional Turkmen outfit during her show and personally serenaded Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow – whose government is accused of arbitrarily arresting and torturing political dissidents.
Human Rights Watch ranks Turkmenistan as ‘among the most repressive in the world.’ The human rights group says the former Soviet republic imposes ‘draconian restrictions on freedom of expression and association.’
The group also reports that ‘President Berdymukhamedov, his relatives, and associates enjoy unlimited power and total control over all aspects of public life.’
The concert was sponsored by China National Petroleum Corp – a major investor in Turmenistan’s booming gas industry – was meant to celebrate Berdimuhamedo’s 56th birthday.
Lopez released a statement after the concert apologizing for signing for the president and saying she never would have attended to concert if she had known the country’s human rights record.
According to the statement, the birthday song was a last-minute request made by the company to Lopez and she ‘graciously obliged.’

The concert took place in at a $2billion resort and yacht club on the Caspian Sea that Berdimuhamedow had opened just the day before.
The glitzy performance for a rarity to the Muslim-majority country of five million people. In attendance were government ministers, the heads of state-owned companies and foreign dignitaries.

Law Requires Chinese to Visit Their Aging Parents

china. elderly man exercising at a parkNew wording in the law requiring people to visit or keep in touch with their elderly parents or risk being sued came into force Monday, as China faces increasing difficulty in caring for its aging population.

The amended law does little to change the status quo, however, because elderly parents in China already have been suing their adult children for emotional support and the new wording does not specify how often people must visit or clarify penalties for those who do not.

It is primarily aimed at raising awareness of the issue, said one of the drafters, Xiao Jinming, a law professor at Shandong University. “It is mainly to stress the right of elderly people to ask for emotional support … we want to emphasize there is such a need,” he said.

China’s legislature amended the law in December following frequent reports of elderly parents neglected by their children. It says offspring of parents older than 60 should see that their daily, financial and spiritual needs are met.

The number of Chinese seniors is expected to skyrocket from the current 185 million to 487 million, or 35 percent of the population, by 2053, according to figures from the China National Committee On Aging.

The expanding ratio is due both an increase in life expectancy — from 41 to 73 over five decades — and by family planning policies that limit most urban families to a single child.

The dress that moves when you look at it: Hi-tech glow-in-the-dark outfit made from the world’s lightest fabric responds to people’s gaze

hi-tech dress 4A forward-thinking Chinese fashion designer has used complex sensory technology to create a dress that moves, changes shape and even lights up when it is looked at.

Montreal-based designer Ying Gao installed her high-fashion creations with eye-tracking technology so that they activate when they sense someone’s gaze.

Gao’s loose white and ivory shift dresses are made from shredded and ruched super-organza- the world’s lightest fabric.

They are sewn with photoluminescent thread and contain tiny eye-tracking electronic devices.

The gaze-activated dresses have small motors sewn into them that can move parts of the dress and make them change shape.

Sensory technology is used to transform the garments from pale, ethereal dresses into luminescent art works that resemble jellyfish.

Chinese couple killed ‘after falling from window while having sex’

chinese couple2A couple fell to their deaths after a window they were having sex against gave way in China.

The pair are said to have fallen from the window of an apartment block in the Chinese city of Wuhan when the window they were leaning against shattered.

Shocking pictures emerged on a local website showing the couple being covered in sheets by police.

Blood is spattered on the pavement nearby and detectives are seen examining the scene.

The couple’s bodies were pictured close to a bicycle which was laying on the ground, but there were no reports that anyone on the ground was injured in the incident.

Reports suggest that the windows in the apartment block were of poor quality.

It is thought that the man and woman may have been trying to keep cool by the window when the incident happened.

It is unclear how high up the pair were when they fell.

Wuhan is the most populous city in central China.

With a 3,500 year history it is one of the most ancient and civilised cities in China.

Incredible pictures show how one of The Alps’ oldest glaciers is being protected from melting – by covering it in BLANKETS

Rhone glacier1Scientists in Switzerland are going to extreme lengths every summer to protect one of the oldest know glaciers in The Alps.

Miles of protective blankets have been laid over the undulating mounds and folds of the ancient ice in an effort to ebb the annual melt as average temperatures gradually climb.

The Rhone Glacier, the source of the Rhone River in the centre of the Swiss Alps, has retreated dramatically over the past 150 years, according to research.

The innovative method of protecting the ice has also been designed to allow visitors to witness the incredible ancient ice from an entirely unique perspective.

Researchers have carved a tunnel inside the glacier, large enough to walk through, allowing people to almost step back in time into a world which has not been exposed for many thousands of years.

Samples of ice had previously pre-dated the glacier to at least the 17th century. But new technological advances, coupled with access to recently-exposed rock, have now allowed them to date the ancient structure to at least 11,500 years old.

As recent ice melts have exposed rocks and soil for the first time in thousands of years, they have revealed interesting clues from remnants of organic material and artifacts of human settlements.

Using isotope measurements from rock newly exposed by the melting glacier, the scientists found that for most of the Holocene Epoch period, dating from the end of the last Ice Age about, 11,500 years ago, the Rhone was in fact smaller than it is today.

Using this dating technique, the researchers believe they may be able to apply their model to other glaciers worldwide and use the data to piece together a global picture of the Halocene period.

Japanese man, 71, sues TV station ‘for using too many English words’

japanA pensioner is suing a Japanese broadcaster for emotional distress as the channel uses to many foreign words.

Hoji Takahashi, 71, wants 1.41million Yen from broadcaster NHK because of their reliance on English.

He says that it makes programming unintelligible and that they should use the traditional Japanese counterparts, reported Japan Today.

His lawyer, Mutsuo Miyata told AFP: ‘The basis of his concern is that Japan is being too Americanized.
‘There is a sense of crisis that this country is becoming just a province of America.’

Many Japanese speakers use English words such as ‘trouble’, ‘risk’ or ‘drive’.

But in Japanese, these words are often pronounced differently, and have new meanings.

They also use words from other languages such as the German ‘arbeit’ and the Spanish ‘pan’.

Samsung launches a TV with a CURVED screen to improve viewing quality – but it’ll set you back £8,5000

samsung TV3Samsung has officially launched its first super-thin curved TV screen with a price tag of £8,500 ($13,000) – five times more than its flat-screen equivalents.

The 55-inch model has a high-resolution OLED display and its design means the screen is an equal distance from the viewer at all times.

It is now on sale in South Korea but Samsung told Reuters the set will be made available in other countries from July – the first time a curved TV of its kind has been sold outside of Asia.

It also said it has no plans to offer a non-curved one this year.

The concave display gives viewers a sense of being immersed in the images.

Samsung claims its ‘Timeless Arena’ design reduces the chance of images appearing pixelated, too.

The 55-inch OLED screen also supports Samsung TV features such as multi-view that lets two people watch different things at the same time.

But mass producing OLED displays still faces many challenges, leading to high prices.

LG, which currently offers both curved and non-curved 55-inch screens, is estimated to have only sold a few hundred screens so far after starting sales earlier this year.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has resigned, after the Australian Labor Party voted her out of its leadership Wednesday.

130321174405-gillard-australia-story-topShe had called for the vote herself after months of inner-party friction.

Her rival, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, takes her place as party leader, after winning the internal ballot by a margin of 57 to 45 votes, according to an ALP spokesman.

He is now Australia’s de facto prime minister and could be sworn in within hours, if Australian Governor-General Quentin Bryce approves him for the office. The governor-general shares the role of head of state with Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.

In a news conference after the vote, Gillard said she was grateful to have had the opportunity to lead her country.

“This privilege was truly humbling. I thank the Australian Labor Party for that privilege and I thank the Australian people for their support,” she said.

“When I first put myself forward for consideration for Labor leader in 2010, I had the overwhelming support of my colleagues to do so. I thank them for that. And I thank them for giving the opportunity to me not only to serve the nation but to serve as the first female prime minister of this country.”

Gillard said she had written to the governor-general to inform her of the ballot result and asking her to commission Rudd as prime minister. She will go to see Bryce later Wednesday.

Rudd is widely popular with Australian voters, who go to the polls in September to pick a new parliament and government. The ALP has not felt confident it could take an election victory with Gillard at its helm.

Supporters within the ALP circulated a petition calling for Rudd to challenger Gillard’s leadership, but he initially refrained. In the meantime, at least eight of the ministers in Gillard’s Cabinet resigned, purging decades of experience from her government.

This week the prime minister had had enough. Despite no official challenge from any rival, she put her power on the chopping block and handed her party the ax.

“I do think it’s in the best interests of the nation — and in the best interests of the Labor Party — for this matter to be resolved,” she said as she called the vote.

Reluctant Rudd

In a jab at her rival, Gillard complained in an interview with CNN affiliate Sky News Australia this week that no one had approached her to mount a leadership ballot in a traditional manner.

“Call me old fashioned, but the way in which these things are normally done is a challenger approaches the leader of the Labor Party and asks them to call a ballot for the leadership, you shake hands and then a ballot is held,” she said.

Gillard called for any challengers to put their names on the ballot, which would be the last one she would call to challenge her position.

Three hours before the vote, Rudd picked up the gauntlet.

“Various ministers have been free and frank in their public advice to me as to the desirability to contest the leadership in recent days. For the nation’s sake, I believe it’s time for this matter to be resolved,” he said in a statement sent to journalists.

The showdown was set in stone.

Rudd has said that he will not use his win against party rivals.

“Every effort I have in my being will be dedicated to uniting the Australian Labor Party. No retributions, no pay backs, none of that stuff. It’s pointless, it’s old politics,” he said.

Loser leaves

In March, Gillard threw down a similar challenge to her power as the rivalry sapped strength from her government. Rudd refused back then to challenge her, and she won the vote of confidence from her party and kept her job.

But she continued to lose support within her party.

In her interview with Sky News, Gillard said the loser of Wednesday’s vote should get out of the way for the sake of a functioning government.

“If you win, you’re Labor leader,” she said. “If you lose, you retire from politics.”

In her post-vote news conference, Gillard confirmed she will not seek to retain her constituency seat in September’s general election.

Indian journalist criticised for filing report from the SHOULDERS of a rescued flood victim in disaster region where 1,000 people died

An Indian journalist has been criticised for appearing on television reporting from a disaster zone while sitting on the shoulders of one of a flood victim.

Narayan Pargaien was in the state of Uttarakhand reporting on floods which have devastated the region when he made his unorthodox broadcast for News Express.

But he has denied the suggestion that he exploited the man by sitting on his shoulders while on camera, insisting that the flood victim ‘wanted to show respect’ because he had never met anyone as important as the journalist before.

A video of Mr Pargaien reporting on the floods swept the internet when it was posted to YouTube earlier this month, with many Indian web users criticising him for apparently using a disaster victim to keep his feet dry.

One commenter denounced him as ‘a disgrace to journalism’, while another said he was ‘a ridiculous reporter’.

In an interview Mr Pargaien, who has nearly two decades of reporting experience, admitted that he was wrong to file the unorthodox report, but said that he only sat on the man’s shoulders after the victim had invited him to do so.

He also blamed his cameraman for revealing the bizarre arrangement, claiming that he had been told he would only be filmed from the waist up.

‘It wasn’t my idea to begin with, but there was this man who took me to his home and asked me to report the damage he had suffered,’ Mr Pargaien told News Laundry.

‘His house was in a miserable condition and he had lost a lot in the flood, and was left with very little food and water.

‘We helped him with some food and some money and he was grateful to us and wanted to show me some respect, as it was the first time someone of my level had visited his house.’

The reporter added that he had paid the man, whom he refused to name, 50 rupees (55p) for his troubles.

He admitted that his actions were ‘journalistically wrong’, adding that he had ‘no problem getting my feet wet’.

The horrific floods in the northern state are believed to have killed 1,000 people, with many thousands more stranded in remote mountainous areas.

Riots Kill 27 in Minority Region of Far West China

Riots in a restive far western region of China on Wednesday killed 27 people and left at least three injured, state media said.

The official Xinhua News Agency said knife-wielding mobs attacked police stations, a local government building and a construction site Wednesday morning in a remote town in the Turkic-speaking Xinjiang (shihn-jahng) region.

The unrest in in Lukqun, a township in Turpan prefecture, left 17 people dead, including nine policemen, before police shot and killed 10 rioters, the agency reported. Xinhua cited officials with the region’s Communist Party committee.

Xinjiang is home to a large population of minority Muslim Uighurs (WEE’-gurs) but is ruled by China’s Han ethnic majority. It has been the scene of numerous violent incidents in recent years, including ethnic riots in Urumqi in 2009 that left nearly 200 people dead.

Japan imports wolf URINE and plays recordings of lions roaring in bid to keep deer from running onto the highway

deerWolf urine and lion roars are being used by transport bosses in northern Japan to tackle the growing problem of collisions caused by deer.

The number of accidents caused by the animal has more than doubled in Hokkaido – the northernmost of Japan’s four main islands – in the past ten years.

As a result, transport officials have taken drastic action. As well as spraying wolf urine near roads and railways they will also be broadcasting the roar of lions to try to keep the deer away.

The urine is being imported from the United States to spray on the island’s highways.

The deer population in Hokkaido was nearly wiped out in the early 20th century because of overhunting and sometimes brutal winters.

But conservation efforts – and the extinction of the indigenous wild wolf population – led to their recovery.

Hokkaido Railway Co earlier this year erected equipment that broadcasts the roar of lions in an effort to keep the timid animals away from its tracks, a spokesman said.

Woman’s breast implant explodes after lying on her stomach for four hours playing game on her iPhone

breast implantA Chinese woman’s breast implant ruptured after lying on her stomach for four hours playing a game on her phone.

According to Chinese news reports, the woman from Beijing had been playing the game in bed when she felt a pain in her chest.

She was taken to hospital and SZNews reports that a doctor said the low quality of the implant, combined with the pressure of lying on it for an extended period of time, had caused the rupture.

It is not clear if the woman had the breast implant replaced – she apparently had the surgery to boost her low self-esteem.

In 2011, a woman’s breast implant was apparently ruptured when she was shot in the chest while paintballing.

The 26-year-old was hit at close range during the game in Croydon, south London.

Last year a Texas woman filed a lawsuit claiming that one of her breast implants ruptured because a police officer used excessive force during her arrest.

Pakistan suspends mountain treks after militants kill ten tourists

Pakistan on Monday suspended expeditions on its second-highest peak, evacuating climbers from Nanga Parbat after 10 foreign tourists were shot dead by Islamist gunmen at a base camp.

Well-armed and well-prepared attackers dressed in police uniforms stormed the camp at the foot of Nanga Parbat late Saturday, shooting dead the climbers and a Pakistani guide at point-blank range, officials said.

“We are shocked, traumatised and full of anger. Pakistan is known among the mountaineering community. It was a brutal massacre. These people were killed for no reason,” said Manzoor Hussain, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan.

Around 40 remaining climbers on Nanga Parbat have been evacuated to Gilgit with treks on the peak now deemed unsafe, he said.

Hussain said there would be no further expeditions this summer and that requests for winter climbs would be subject to a security review.
