Berlusconi’s alleged call-girl says she lied

1Բերլուսկոնիի հետ ենթադրաբար սեռական հարաբերությունների ունեցած աղջThe alleged call-girl at the centre of a trial against Silvio Berlusconi told a courtroom on Friday that she had previously lied to investigators about raunchy parties hosted by the billionaire tycoon.

“I am sorry I talked rubbish when I spoke to prosecutors,” Karima El-Mahroug, a dancer nicknamed “Ruby the Heart Stealer”, said at a separate trial against three friends of Berlusconi’s accused of pimping for him.
“The majority of the things I said were not true,” she said.
The Moroccan-born 21-year-old, who is alleged to have had sex for money with the then-prime minister several times in 2010 when she was 17, had said that Berlusconi and his accountant gave her 187,000 euros ($243,000) in cash.
But on Friday she said she had “made up” the sum just to show off.
She also went back on testimony that Berlusconi had hosted strip shows for his “bodily stimulation” at his villa, saying that the girls who took part only stripped to their lingerie and there had been “no contact” with Berlusconi.

North Korea says willing to take China’s advice to start talks

1Հյուսիսային Կորեան ցանկանում է Չինաստանի հետ կարգավորել հարաբերութÕNorth Korea is willing to take China’s advice and enter into talks, Chinese state television cited an envoy of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as saying, following weeks of tension on the Korean peninsula after the North’s latest nuclear test.
However, that prospect seems unlikely as North Korea has repeatedly said it will not abandon nuclear weapons while the United States insists North Korea must take meaningful steps on denuclearization before there can be talks.
The visit to Beijing by Choe Ryong-hae, a top North Korean military officer, is the most high-level contact between North Korea and China in about six months.
Ties have been hurt between the two supposed allies by the North’s third nuclear test in February, despite China’s disapproval, and by China agreeing to U.N. sanctions on the North in response and starting to put a squeeze on North Korean banks.
China was also alarmed by North Korea’s threats this year to wage nuclear war on South Korea and the United States in retaliation for the sanctions, fearing any conflict would inevitable have disastrous consequences for China.
Choe told Liu Yunshan, the Chinese Communist Party’s fifth-ranked leader, that Kim had sent him to China “to improve, consolidate and develop ties between China and North Korea”.

Biggest legal high in history? Indian police set fire to enormous haul of cannabis (but this officer didn’t inhale, honestly)

in1Police in India seized thousands of kilos of cannabis then destroyed the haul by setting it on fire.

The huge discovery was made by officers in the town of Kharupetia in the state of Assam in the North East of the country.

Scores of bags were then emptied onto the ground and set ablaze.

It is not known exactly how large the haul was but recent raids in the area have recovered as much as ten tonnes of the illegal crop.

Cannabis cultivation has become rife in the towns and villages of Assam in recent years.

It is used not not only a transit route to other parts of the country but also offers a lucrative market to dealers.

A kilo of cannabis currently sells for around £60.

American tourists having picnic on Iceland glacier rescued after it becomes iceberg and floats away – with them on it

i2It was anything but a quiet meal for a group of tourists who stopped to have a picnic on a glacier in Iceland, only to have their vantage point break off and float away.

The four Americans had stopped for a Sunday dinner at the Fjallsárlón glacial lagoon in East Iceland over the weekend, setting up a table and chairs for their feast.

But suddenly, a gust of wind caused the ice floe they were sitting on to break off and drift out into the water.

One of the tourists was able to scramble off the massive piece of ice and call for help.
When they were found by first responders, they were about 32 feet off the shore, according to Iceland Review.

A photo from the scene shows the three tourists sitting calmly in the chairs before they were saved.

After the daring rescue, the first responders took a lighthearted approach to the tourists’ predicament.

‘When we arrived it was quite comical to see them sitting on chairs and with a table on an iceberg,’ Páll Sigurður Vignisson of the Hornafjörður rescue team, told Iceland Review.

He added: ‘Yes, the dinner was over.’

In an interview with RÚV, he took a more serious tone.

Páll said: ‘They could have been in danger. We never know how ice will behave, if it rolls over and when – we just don’t know.’

Her hips really don’t lie! Shakira reveals her circus contortionist skills and puts her legs behind her head

sh2

Shakira has always displayed her flexibility in her music videos, but never has she been this bent out of shape before.

The Hips Don’t Lie singer showed that she can bend her legs Whenever, Wherever as she displayed her amazing limberness.

The 36-year-old was happy to show off her not-so-secret talent as she explained exactly what she might do for a living if she was not a singer.

The Colombian superstar was recording the difficult poses for The Voice as she curved her snake like legs in all manner of directions.

Shakira managed to put both her feet behind her head as she revealed that she could be a contortionist in a circus.

The starlet wasn’t exactly dressed for the tough movement as she wore a white T-shirt and a pair of tight jeans.

Nevertheless she was extremely convincing with her suppleness with fellow Voice mentor Usher exclaiming: ‘I think Shakira is pretty limber!’

Rinehart loses $7 bn but still Australia’s richest

4Ռայնհարթը կորցրել է 7 միլիարդ դոլար, սակայն դեռևս Ավստրալիայի ամենահÕMining magnate Gina Rinehart had Aus$7 billion (US$6.8 billion) wiped off her fortune in the past year but remains Australia’s wealthiest person, an annual rich list showed Wednesday.

Rinehart, heiress to an iron ore prospecting empire built in Australia’s resources-rich west, led the respected BRW Rich 200 list for a third year in a row with a personal fortune of Aus$22.02 billion.
But she also lost more money than anyone else thanks to plunging iron ore prices, giving up a quarter of her estimated wealth from last year of Aus$29.17 billion.
The Business Review Weekly magazine, known as BRW, said the five biggest falls this year were by mining industry figures, dragging down the value of the whole list.

Venezuela moves to relieve toilet paper shortage

3Վենեսուելան ջանում է լուծել զուգարանի թղթի պակասի խնդիրըVenezuela’s National Assembly approved a $79 million credit to import toilet paper and other personal hygiene products to relieve shortages in the petroleum-rich state.
The South American OPEC member has the world’s largest proven oil reserves but has wrestled with periodic shortages of several consumer goods since price controls were imposed in 2003 under the late socialist leader Hugo Chavez.
The credit will be used to purchase 39 million rolls of toilet paper, 50 million sanitary napkins, 10 million bars of soap, 17 million disposable diapers and three million tubes of toothpaste.
Chavez, who died of cancer in March, launched a “Bolivarian Revolution” during his 14 years in power, using the country’s vast oil wealth to fund social programs for the poor and back regional leftist allies.
But chronic shortages have plagued the country since Chavez imposed currency and price controls in 2003.
Venezuelans suffer from sporadic power outages, inflation — which topped 20 percent last year — and a public debt of $150 billion, or half the gross domestic product of the country of 29 million.

Indian is first female amputee to climb Everest

2Առաջին անգամ Էվերեստ է բարձրացել հաշմանդամ կինAn Indian woman who lost her leg after she was thrown from a moving train two years ago has become the first female amputee to climb Everest, expedition organisers said Wednesday.
Arunima Sinha, 26, from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, reached the peak on Tuesday morning after a slow climb from Everest Base Camp.
“She left high camp at 6pm on Monday evening and arrived at the summit at 10:55 am (0510 GMT) on Tuesday,” Ang Tshering Sherpa, founder of Asian Trekking, the company that organised the expedition, told AFP.
Sinha’s guides were concerned about her slow pace until the team reached an 8,750-metre (28,707 foot) junction that climbers pass through on their way to the top of the mountain, Sherpa said.
“But once she got to that point, she gained energy and confidence and started moving really quickly,” Sherpa said.
Two years ago, the former national-level volleyball player was shoved from a moving train by thieves when she reportedly attempted to fight them off as they tried to stealing her purse.

A Nobel prize-winning scientist Tuesday played down “shock-horror scenarios” that a newvirus strain will emerge with the potential to kill millions of people.

A Nobel prize-winningPeter Doherty, who jointly won the Nobel prize in 1996 for his work on how the immune system combats virus-infected cells, said the worst-case scenario was a new virus with a high mortality rate that was also highly infectious.
The Australian said the world experienced such a pandemic in 1918, when an influenza variant killed an estimated 50 million people, more than twice the number who died in World War I.
Doherty said it was possible such an outbreak could occur again but it was unlikely to have such devastating consequences.
“A lot of the (1918) deaths were undoubtedly due to secondary bacterial infection and, of course, we have antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infection now,” he said at a lecture at Otago University’s Wellington campus.
“In the pandemic world we all look to these shock-horror scenarios — it makes good television, there’s a lot of books about these terrible infections that are going to kill us all off.

Bangladeshi, South Korean climbers die on Everest

everest-graphic-620A climber from Bangladesh and another from South Korea have died on Mount Everest as hundreds flock to the world’s highest peak during good weather, Nepalese tourism officials said Tuesday.
“Both men died while descending from the summit on Monday,” an official with the tourism ministry told AFP from Everest Base Camp.
Sung Ho-Seo, 34, of South Korea was attempting the climb without supplementary oxygen and died on his way down the mountain.
Mohammed Hossain, 35, from Bangladesh, died in his tent a few hours after successfully climbing the summit.
“The exact cause of death is unknown, but altitude played a part,” said the official, Gyanendra Shrestha, adding that the bodies would not be recovered until after the summit season ended so as not to interrupt other climbers.
Both men perished in the “death zone” — above 8,000 metres, notorious for its difficult terrain and thin air.
Five other climbers have died on the 8,848-metre (29,029-foot) mountain this season.

‘We’re a mess’, Indonesia football official admits

Indonesia football official admitsIndonesian football is in “such a mess” that nothing will be done to address the issue of unruly crowds at international games despite the country being fined $15,000, an official admitted Tuesday.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Monday fined the Indonesian association over several matches at which fans let off fireworks and threw plastic bottles and paper cups onto the pitch.
But the dire state of the game in Indonesia, still trying to recover from a bitter battle between rival federations, meant no action would be taken, said Rudolf Yesayas, a senior Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) official.
“Football management in Indonesia is in such a mess at the moment, we aren’t able to do anything about things like this. We have much bigger problems,” he admitted to AFP.
The fine was imposed over crowd problems at several matches this year and last, the most recent of which was an Asian Cup home qualifier against Saudi Arabia on March 23.
Indonesia would also have to play a match behind closed doors if problems reoccurred in the next two years, the AFC said.
Football in Southeast Asia’s biggest nation had been mired in controversy for two years, with the PSSI and rival federation, the Indonesian Soccer Rescue Committee (KPSI), running competing leagues.

Bird flu costs China industry $65 bln

China’s human H7N9 bird flu outbreak has cost the country’s poultry industry more than 400 billion yuan ($65 billion) as consumers shun chicken, government officials said, according to state media.

The sector has been losing an average of one billion yuan a day since the end of March, the Beijing Times said on Monday, citing Li Xirong, head of the National Animal Husbandry Service.

H7N9 avian influenza has infected 130 people in China, killing 35, since it was found in humans for the first time, according to latest official data.

Poultry sales have tumbled and prices plunged, Li said, causing major financial problems and job losses as a result.

In a stunt to boost confidence, officials and poultry business leaders in the eastern province of Shandong held a widely reported all-chicken lunch last week, according to Chinese media.

Chinese tourists must ‘be more polite’ says Communist Party official who claims they are harming the country’s image abroad

ch1A senior Communist Party official says that ‘uncivilised behaviour’ by Chinese tourists is harming China’s image abroad.

Wang Yang, one of the country’s four vice-prime ministers, said holidaymakers should be more polite, singling out talking loudly and spitting as poor behaviour by his fellow citizens.

It was revealed last month that the Chinese are the world’s biggest spending tourists, splashing out $102billion on foreign trips in 2012, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation.

Chinese tourists make 83million trips abroad last year, compared with only 10million in 2000, becoming the single biggest source of global tourism income.

Writing in the official party newspaper People’s Daily, Mr Wang said: ‘Improving the civilised quality of the citizens and building a good image of Chinese tourists are the obligations of governments at all levels and relevant agencies and companies.’

He said Chinese authorities should ‘guide tourists to conscientiously abide by public order and social ethics, respect local religious beliefs and customs, mind their speech and behaviour… and protect the environment’.

However, some Chinese tourists say they are treated ‘like second-class citizens’ when they are abroad.

‘Chinese internet forums were flooded with protests earlier this year when news emerged that a hotel in the Maldives had removed kettles from rooms occupied by Chinese tourists,’ said the BBC‘s Beiijing correspondent Celia Hatton.

‘Apparently, the hotel’s manager was upset that some Chinese tourists were using boiling water to eat instant noodles in their rooms, instead of spending money in the hotel’s restaurants.’

Maradona pictured in furious bust-up with photographers after ‘throwing stones and kicking them’

m3Diego Maradona appeared to be involved in a bust-up with photographers covering his arrival in Buenos Aires.

The Argentine legend travelled to the country to meet his three-month-old son Diego Fernando, whom he had with former girlfriend Veronica Ojeda, but was not happy with the attention.

He allegedly threw stones at them to try and get the snappers and news crews to disperse, but when that did not work he appeared to kick out.

Maradona, 52, currently living in Dubai despite being sacked by Al Wasl last year, was with his 22-year-old girlfriend Rocio Oliva.

A photographer told La Red Radio: ‘On the way, in heavy rain, Maradona made the car stop, got out with a Havana cigar in his hand, took some stones from the edge of the highway and started throwing them at reporters’ cars and kicked a photographer’s leg.’

He was also accused of fighting with a passenger who had offered him a diet supplement.

Maradona’s spokesman told The Sun: ‘Diego’s is experiencing some personal problems at the moment and I hope he will soon be able to resolve them in a favorable way.’

Muslim religious leaders to visit Auschwitz

3Մուսուլման առաջնորդերը կայցելեն ԱուշվիցFourteen Muslim clerics from across the globe will visit the former Nazi German Auschwitz death camp in southern Poland next week as part of a Holocaust awareness and anti-genocide program, organisers said Friday.

“This is an opportunity for imams who are influential in their communities to look at the Holocaust first hand and to go to Auschwitz, to see what that kind of hatred led to,” Poland’s Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich told AFP on Friday.
“It’s to make sure that civilisation doesn’t fail again.”
The visiting imams are from Bosnia, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Morocco, Nigeria, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United States.
More than one million people, mostly European Jews, perished at Auschwitz-Birkenau, operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland from 1940 until it was liberated by the Soviet Red Army on January 27, 1945.
Among the camp’s other victims were tens of thousands of non-Jewish Poles, Soviet prisoners of war, gypsies, and anti-Nazi resistance fighters from across Europe.

“The agreement is a fundamental signal for the Italian economic system and the international capital market,” he was quoted as saying.
Qatar Holding last year bought a luxury resort on the Italian island of Sardinia with one of the country’s most beautiful stretches of coastline.
In 2012, Qatar also set up a joint venture with Italy with a 2.0 billion euro fund to invest in Italian business including in fashion, food, tourism and design.

Bangladesh garment hub to reopen after unrest

bangladeshi-garment-workers-protest-the-collapse-of-the-eight-storey-rana-plaza-compound-in-savar-on-april-27-2013-4Bangladesh garment manufacturers said Thursday they would reopen hundreds of factories in a manufacturing hub outside the capital, days after they shut the plants due to worker unrest following a deadly accident.
The manufacturers Monday announced the shutdown of the factories in the Ashulia industrial area after two weeks of protests over the death of 1,127 garment workers in the country’s worst industrial tragedy.
“We’ve decided to reopen the factories from Friday,” Shahidullah Azim, vice-president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said after meeting government and labour representatives.
The association, which represents the country’s 4,500 garment factories, took the decision after the government assured it of the “highest security” for the plants, Azim told AFP.
“We met the home and labour ministers and representatives from the workers today. They assured the highest security for our factories,” he said.
Most of Bangladesh’s top garment factories, which make clothing for a string of major Western retailers including Walmart, H&M, Tesco, Inditex and Carrefour, are based at Ashulia.
Police said tens of thousands of workers joined the protests and dozens of factories and vehicles were vandalised.

Bot’s going on here? Two Australians strip off to promote nudity but let’s hope the Queen wasn’t looking out of her window during their stunt

n6Two Australian ‘crusaders without clothes’ have stripped off beside some of London’s most iconic landmarks in a project to promote nudity.

Sam Hatfield and Fiona Skelton bared all at BuckinghamPalace, TowerBridge, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye.

They also offered their own interpretation of the iconic image of The Beatles by strolling across the Abbey Road crossing.

The London images were part of a short film they made for the project called ‘Bare Rollin’ in the Big Smoke’.

The duo, who call themselves ‘the crusaders without clothes’, said: ‘We are here to make being comfortable with nudity cool.

WORLD EXCLUSIVE: David Beckham retires from football – England legend calls it a day

b9David Beckham has retired from football, bringing an end to a glittering career on the field.

Since his debut for Manchester United two decades ago, the 38-year-old has emerged as arguably the most iconic sportsman of his generation, captaining his country, collecting 115 caps, and celebrated as a champion in four different countries – the only British footballer in history to do so.

Despite the offer of an extended one-year deal at Paris Saint-German, the 38-year-old has played his last game, bowing out on a high after helping Carlo Ancelotti’s side win the French title for the first time in 19 years.

When approached for comment by Sportsmail, Beckham’s representative was today unavailable.

The trailblazing midfielder –  who played for some of the biggest clubs in the world such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Los Angeles Galaxy – is now set to continue his ambassadorial duties with a variety of organisations, which include Sky Sports, adidas, Unicef and promoting football in China.

Having relocated from LA in January, Beckham is expected to set up a permanent base in London with his wife Victoria and children, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper.

His vast fortune of an estimated £165million comfortably makes him the richest athlete ever in British sport, with a host of lucrative sponsorship deals and salary payments over the last decade amassing his wealth.
