Boat Sinking Survivors Denounce Greek Authorities

greece-surviviors-boatThree Afghans who survived the sinking of a migrant boat have described in vivid terms how Greek authorities tried to forcibly tow them back to Turkey.

They said Saturday that the attempt caused their boat to flood and that the Coast Guard did nothing to help those, mostly women and children, who had fallen into the sea and hit at those migrants who attempted to save them.

They claimed survivors never made statements thanking authorities for their rescue, contradicting Greek officials. Some survivors say they lost relatives in the incident, in which 12 are presumed to have perished.

Head of State Social Security Armen Abrahamyan presented the system of ”Electronic Pension”, its advantages and effectiveness, after which Head of Staff, Artak Grigoryan reported on the steps carried out related to the ministry staff structure, human resources and current activities management and increasing the effectiveness of staff function.

After listening to the Leadership reports, the President gave instructions to the responsible people in certain issues. The President spoke about Ministry future problems and priority directions of activity, also about conducted improvements. The President of Armenia stressed the importance of thoroughly and accessible presentation of improvements to the public which is actual, especially in the case of pension system improvements due to the President convincement.

According to the President, while speaking to people, it can be often heard that they do not know about it, they did not have time to read, listen or watch the notifications made a few days ago. In this case, all responsible people should continue to present, explain the importance, effectiveness and actuality of these improvements for the public, also mention to where they can lead our country and society.

President Serzh Sargsyan underlined that improvements on social area have wide range of process and we do not have any right to slow this process. In regard to pension system improvement, the President emphasized. “I am convinced that this improvement is a complex of program which will be called historical, years will pass and your today’s work will be only granted with respect and gratitude. Obviously the results will probably not be visible both for me and for you. However, if we are involved in this work and are deeply convinced that this improvement is exact and it is one of the programs which tends to our country’s future, then, I repeat again that we should explain it everyone with patience. We are responsible for everyone. We are responsible also for the people who do not understand the logic of this improvement or do not accept and perceive it under general dissatisfaction. However, these people will also use the results of this improvement. Therefore, one again, Mr. Minister, we should mobilize not only Ministry full staff, but also various specialists, people, our supporters in order to explain the essence, meaning and aims of the improvement in detail. It is extremely important.’’

The President underlined that social area improvements are integral parts of our fellow citizens’ social condition improvement. It is evident that people’s social condition is based on economic growth and low inflation which make it possible to increase salaries and to make various investments. People should feel directly economic growth in their lives.

“At this time we turn our focus on boosting economic growth and jobs creation, especially that projects were conducted during the years which have almost reached their final stage. This year several companies will be launched which will have essential impact on our economy” President Serzh Sargsyan said, underlining that these projects will constantly have continuous funding in line with changing economic structure.

The President of Armenia expressed confidence that the Ministry will be insistent in his improvements.

At the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the President responded also to the questions raised by the participants of the meeting related to domestic and foreign policy, defense and security of our country.

In particular, responding to the question on how realistic the President Ilham Aliyev bellicose declarations are to resolve Nagorno-Karabakh issue by force and our country’s response in contrast to this armament, considering Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev from time to time statements on starting war, press reports about Azerbaijan armament, estimation about that Azerbaijan bought armament for 3 billion dollars during last 4-5 years, President Serzh Sargsyan said, “In your opinion how long is Ilham Aliyev speak such way, if he can do, why is not he doing, if he should do, why is he talking about it. I can not exclude that military operations will not be held in such an environment, because at least two people in our country, the President and the Defense Minister should probably consider that military operations can start just tomorrow. I still do not see military operation in foreseeable future, but we will have to fight if we are imposed. You said “what you are doing”. We do that special squad soldiers from Baku, the number of whom is of 3-4 time more than we, do not manage to perform their task and, in fact, they failed, bearing more losses than border keeping our solders. This is the first. I want to tell that our Army combat preparedness is on sufficiently high level. Second, our position equipments are relevant to today’s situation. If one of you are in our border positions, you will see both our commanders and soldiers equipping their positions: making different traps, inventing warning devices and using various tricks. If you remember, such act of diversion had success two years ago. It is not a coincidence that they failed now. It means we use means for our turn, senior commanders, junior commanders and the most important, our ordinary soldiers for their turns. Third, we replenish our arsenals, military reserves, our armor, weapons, and equipment not less than anyone. Every time we acquire modern weapons used in special cases along with the use of mass weapons. We are not behind anyone in this field. Yes, the money put in our budget are not so expressive, do not reach billions, but I assure you that our Army ammunition does not have much lack. I say it does not have much lack, because there are few armies in the world which are fully equipped with ammunition.

Army is the body that every time requires new weapons and ammunition. This is typical to all armies. We do not want war, it is evident that we do not want it, but we have no other way if we are imposed.

At the conclusion of the meeting, a group of the Ministry employees were awarded for diligent and efficient work. Aghavni Asatryan, Finance and Accounting Department Accounting Senior Specialist, Hasmik Khachatryan, Head of Department of Public Relations, Roza Mkrtchyan, Deputy Head of Pension Security Department, Karmen Petrosyan, Head of Disabled and Elderly People Issues Department received Presidential Letters of Commendation.

Justin Bieber’s Music Banned From Canadian Radio Until He Checks Into Rehab

justin-bieber

Justin Bieber‘s antics has prompted a radio station in his home country of Canada to ban his music. Hot 89.9 in Ottawa has told its listeners that they will not play the singles by the 19-year-old troubled star until he checks himself into rehab.

Bieber may really need some help soon. The “Baby” singer, who has been making more headlines for his erratic behavior than his music, was arrested in Miami Beach, Florida on early Thursday, January 23 for driving under the influence, non-violent resisting arrest and drag racing.

Cops then found out that Bieber had an expired driving license and he failed the field sobriety test. He was released hours later after posting $2,500 bail.

Fire at Quebec seniors’ home leaves 5 dead, 30 missing

A fire swept through an apartment complex for the elderly in the small Quebec town of L’Isle-Verte early Thursday, killing at least five and leaving roughly 30 others unaccounted for, police said.

Frigid temperatures have made search efforts difficult, police Lt. Guy Lapointe said hours after the fire began. Water used to fight the blaze has frozen into ice, he said, trapping pockets of fire, and possibly victims, in the collapsed three-story building.

Police said they fear some of the missing were in the burned and frozen remains of the 52-unit Residence du Havre, situated in the town of about 1,400 people near the St. Lawrence River northeast of Quebec City.

About 20 people escaped — some were taken to a hospital, and others to a nearby school.

Authorities were still struggling to figure out exactly how many people were in the building when the fire hit.

Emergency personnel worked in temperatures well below freezing. The temperature in nearby Riviere-du-Loup was -22 C (-7 F) at 7 a.m. ET, according to Environment Canada.

Pakistan’s Musharraf Wants Heart Treatment Abroad

Lawyers in the high treason case of former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf say he is pushing to leave the country so he can undergo treatment for a heart condition abroad.

The military hospital treating Musharraf submitted a second report to the court about his condition on Friday. It was also given to his lawyers.

Two defense lawyers who did not want to be identified because the report was not public said the board recommended Musharraf urgently undergo an angiography.

They would not say if the report recommended where the test be done.

Musharraf was taken to the hospital in Rawalpindi, a garrison city near Islamabad, after suffering a “heart problem” on the way to court in early January.

The hermit who suddenly decided she was a people person after all: Woman who has lived alone for 26 years in Siberia appeals for someone to live with her… because she’s lonely

A woman who has lived alone for 26 years in Siberia is appealing for someone to live with her because she is lonely.

Agafya Lykova, who is now nearly 70, is the sole survivor of the Lykov family who decided to cut themselves off from civilisation in 1936.

But she has wrote to a Siberian newspaper begging for another Christian to come and live with her at her home which is hundreds of miles from its nearest town.

Her parents decided to cut themselves off from civilisation in 1936 to escape persecution faced under Stalin.

However, officials visit Agafya every year to check she is okay.

According to The Siberian Times she was born in either 1944 or 1945 and it was not until 1978 that their hermit huts were spotted from the air in the Sayan Mountains by a party of Soviet geologists.

Her father was Karp Lykov who led the family into the wilderness. His sons were Savvin, 45, and Dmitry, 36, and daughters Natalya, 42, and Agafya, who was 34 when they were found. The children’s mother Akulina had died in 1961.

Her siblings died in the 1980s and Agafya’s only companions is now two nanny goats, a male goat, eight cats, a rooster, hens and a dog called Taiga.

The Secretary-General’s Message on The International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust

պանգի մուն

Every year on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp, we commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.  We recall the suffering of millions of innocent people, and highlight the perils of anti-Semitism and hatred of any kind.

This year we focus on journeys through the Holocaust — and I recall a recent journey of my own.

Last November, I walked through the infamous “arbeit macht frei” gate at Auschwitz-Birkenau.  I will never forget my visit.

I saw the horrific remnants of the machinery of genocide, as well as moving images of European Jewish life in the 1930s — weddings, family meals, rituals, other scenes of simple daily life — all extinguished through systematic murder unique in human history.

I saw the barracks where Jews, Roma, Sinti, homosexuals, dissidents, prisoners of war and persons with disabilities spent their final days in the most brutal conditions.

The United Nations was founded to prevent any such horror from happening again.  Yet tragedies from Cambodia to Rwanda to Srebrenica show that the poison of genocide still flows.

We must be ever vigilant against bigotry, extremist ideologies, communal tensions and discrimination against minorities.  And we must teach our children well.  The Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme has developed effective educational materials and strong partnerships that help convey these lessons to students around the world.

Standing near the crematorium at Auschwitz, I felt deeply saddened by all that had happened within.  But I was also inspired by all those who liberated the death camps for all humanity.  Let us join forces today on a shared journey to a world of equality and dignity for all.

“A Visit To Auschwitz” Op-Ed Article of UN the Secretary-General

պանգի մուն

This year’s observance of the International Remembrance Day on January 27th — the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp — falls at a time when there are reminders all around us of the dangers of forgetting.  This year marks two decades since the genocide in Rwanda.  Conflicts in Syria, South Sudan and the Central African Republic have taken on dangerous communal dimensions.  Bigotry still courses through our societies and our politics.  The world can and must do more to eliminate the poison that led to the camps.

I visited Auschwitz-Birkenau last November.  A chill wind was blowing that day; the ground was rocky underfoot.  But I had an overcoat and sturdy shoes; my thoughts went to those who had had neither: the Jews and other prisoners who once populated the camp.  I thought of those captives standing naked for hours in icy weather, torn from their families and shorn of their hair as they were readied for the gas chambers.  I thought of those who were kept alive only to be worked to death.  Above all, I reflected on how unfathomable the Holocaust remains even today.  The cruelty was so profound; the scale so large; the Nazi worldview so warped and extreme; the killing so organized and calculated nature.

The barracks at Birkenau seemed to stretch to the horizon in every direction – a vast factory of death.  The “Book of Names” identifying millions of Jewish victims filled a room yet contained just a fraction of the toll, which also encompassed Poles, Roma, Sinti, Soviet prisoners of war, dissidents, homosexuals, people with disabilities and others.  I was especially moved by a video showing European Jewish life in the 1930s – scenes of family meals and visits to the beach, musical and theatre performances, weddings and other rituals, all savagely extinguished through systematic murder unique in human history.

Marian Turski, a Polish Jew who survived Auschwitz and is today the Vice-President of the International Auschwitz Committee, walked me through the infamous “Arbeit Macht Frei” gate — this time in freedom.  Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, a survivor of Buchenwald and now the Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv, stood with me on the ramp where the transport trains unloaded their human cargo, and recounted the traumatic moment when the swift flick of an SS commander’s index finger meant the difference between life and death.  I grieve for those who died in the camps, and I am awed by those who lived — who bear sorrowful memories yet have shown the strength of the human spirit.

I was also accompanied by students from the International Youth Meeting Centre in Oswiecim, who work to build bridges among people and nations.  L’dor v’dor, Marian Turski said to me – Hebrew for “from generation to generation”, the passing on of wisdom.  It is for this reason that Auschwitz-Birkenau is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.  We cannot build the future without remembering the past; what happened once can recur.

Combatting hatred is among the cardinal missions of The United Nations.  Our human rights mechanisms work to protect people.  Our special courts and tribunals strive to combat impunity, deliver justice and deter violations.  UN special advisers on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect scan the world for the precursors of atrocity crimes.  The Alliance of Civilizations initiative seeks to counter manifestations of hatred, from anti-Semitism and Islamophobia to ultra-nationalism and bias against minorities.  Our new “Rights Up Front” effort seeks to strengthen early action to prevent grave abuses of human rights.

For almost a decade, the “United Nations and the Holocaust Outreach Programme” has been working with teachers and students on all continents to to promote tolerance and universal values.  The programme’s newest educational package, produced in partnership with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, will help to introduce Holocaust studies into classrooms in countries ranging from Brazil and Nigeria to Russia and Japan.  At this year’s remembrance ceremony at UN Headquarters, the featured speaker will be Steven Spielberg, whose Shoah Institute for Visual History and Education was a landmark in preserving survivor testimony.

A few steps from the crematorium at Auschwitz, I took a moment to myself for reflection.  I touched a barbed wire fence — no longer electrified but still sharp and intimidating.  I felt overwhelmed by the enormity of what had happened within, and humbled by the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers and leaders of many nations who defeated the Nazi menace.  My hope is that our generation, and those to come, will summon that same sense of collective purpose to prevent such horror from happening again anywhere, to anyone or any group, and build a world of equality for all.

Ukrainian Protesters Occupy Government Buildings

Ուկրաինա, ցույցեր

Protesters on Friday seized a government building in the Ukrainian capital while also maintaining their siege of several governors’ offices in the country’s west, raising the pressure on the government.

After meeting with President Viktor Yanukovych for several hours late Thursday, opposition leaders told the crowds that he had promised to ensure the release of dozens of protesters detained after clashes with police, and stop further detentions. They urged the protesters to maintain a shaky truce following violent street battles in the capital, but were booed by demonstrators eager to resume clashes with police.

The truce has held, but early Friday protesters broke into the downtown building of the Ministry of Agricultural Policy, meeting no resistance.

The demonstrators allowed ministry workers to take their possessions, but wouldn’t allow them to go to work.

The move followed the seizure of local governors’ offices in several western regions on Thursday.

In Lviv, near the Polish border, some 450 kilometers (280 miles) west of Kiev, hundreds of activists burst into the office of the regional governor, Oleh Salo, a Yanukovych appointee, shouting “Revolution!” They forced a local governor to sign a resignation letter and remained in the building, refusing to let the workers in.

Yanukovych, meanwhile, called an emergency session of parliament — which is controlled by his loyalists — next week to discuss the tensions.

His Interior Minister Vitali Zakharchenko issued a statement late Thursday guaranteeing that police would not take action against the large protest camp on Independence Square, known as the Maidan. He also urged police not to react to provocations.

National Defense In Public Spotlight

նիստ

A Cabinet sitting was held today, chaired by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan.

Opening the meeting, the Prime Minister gave the floor to Minister of Defense Seyran Ohanyan. The latter reported that after the failed attempt of sabotage act committed by the special units of the enemy on the night of 19 to 20 January, there is some tension on the Azeri side. Meanwhile, our people should not have any safety concerns, since our soldiers are on the watch as always.

Reminding that the Government has been providing financial assistance to vulnerable households for gas, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said this policy will be continued, and 1 cubic meter of gas will still cost 100 drams for such families. A decision to that effect is due within a week.

The Government approved a timetable for implementation of the program of activities (road map) to accede to the Customs Union and Common Economic Space of the Republic of Belarus, the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation, through which public agencies will have a clear view of their participation in the activities and the timing provisions to implement them in accordance with the established procedure.

The Government agreed to the proposal for signing an agreement between the Government of Armenia and the United Nations on emergency import, export and transit of relief supplies and humanitarian assistance.

On the basis of reciprocity, the Government decided to exempt Japanese citizens with diplomatic passports from the requirement to obtain Republic of Armenia entry visas.

The meeting decided to extend until July, 2014 the temporary import customs regime for goods and equipment imported and not re-exported by Golden Field LLC. Note that the company has been manufacturing high pressure motorcar gas cylinders since 2007. The company employs some 150 people, with around 70 percent of the output exported abroad. Golden Field LLC has signed three major export contracts enabling them to export the entire volume of cylinders.

With another decision, the Executive granted a temporary import customs regime extension till September 2015 to VKS Armenia LLC, which is providing clothing services to a number of foreign organizations and, to this end, has set up production units in Yerevan, Vanadzor and Amasia. All the needed machinery and equipment is imported from abroad.

In conclusion, the Government decided to reorganize the Yerevan State University of Architecture and Engineering into National Fund of Architecture and Engineering. The newly established Fund will be in a better position to improve the quality of education through flexible and efficient use of property, closer cooperation with foreign investors and thereby increase its fiscal contributions.

The meeting discussed some forty items altogether.

They’re delicious’ Man, 23, so addicted to eating PLASTIC BAGS he has consumed 60,000 and even steals them from supermarkets to satisfy cravings

man-eating plastic

A man is so addicted to eating plastic bags he even steals them from grocery stores to satisfy his cravings.

Robert, 23, from Oakland, Tennessee, has been eating plastic bags since he was seven years old.

Since his addiction began he has consumed a staggering 60,000 bags, which is enough to cover an entire US football field.

He starts off his day by eating a bag for breakfast – and he prefers the blue plastic bags that newspapers are delivered in.
Sometimes he even drives around the neighbourhood looking for newspaper bags that have been left outside to satisfy his cravings.

Robert believes that different coloured bags have different tastes but speaking on TLC’s My Strange Addiction, he says the blue ones are ‘just delicious.’

But fiancee Ashley is concerned over his addiction – and wants him to stop before their wedding in six months time.

Even though eating plastic can cause liver damage and intestinal blockages, Robert’s tests come back OK and he promises to Ashley he will try to cut back on eating plastic.

Bangkok Temperature Hits 30-Year Low

Thailand’s capital has seen its coldest temperatures in three decades, as the normally balmy Southeast Asian country is experiencing one of its longest winter cold snaps in years.

Oparg Karankawinpong, deputy director of the Department of Disease Control, said Thursday that as many as 63 people in 24 provinces have died from cold-related ailments since the cool season began in late October, with the north and northeast being the country’s chilliest areas. He said hotter weather was expected to begin in mid-February.

Thai media quoted Songkram Aksorn, deputy director general of the country’s meteorological department, as saying that Bangkok’s temperature fell Thursday morning to 15.6 degree Celsius (60.08 degrees Fahrenheit), the lowest in 30 years. He added that the current cold season lasting almost three months was the longest in a decade.

It is not unusual for people living in northern Thailand to haul out coats and scarves to wear around the turn of the year, and tourists and locals alike wonder at frost found in mountainous areas. But in poorer communities it is necessary for blankets to be distributed by authorities. The cold weather also is a concern because it lowers people’s resistance to diseases, raising the risk of infections such as bird flu.

Hopping mad: South African ministers furious to discover sculptors who created Nelson Mandela memorial included a RABBIT inside his ear

sculpture - Nelson Mandela

A 30ft sculpture of Nelson Mandela has angered South African officials as the sculptors left a ‘signature’ on the artwork – a sculpted rabbit tucked inside one of the bronze ears.

The bronze memorial, which was unveiled outside the government complex in Pretoria, after Mandela’s funeral on December 16, is billed as the largest statue of the South African leader in the world.

Nelson Mandela

Officials demand that the miniature rabbit is to be removed from the statue, claiming it mocks Mandela and his life’s work.

The giant work stands with arms outstretched, symbolizing Mandela’s devotion to inclusiveness, outside the Union Buildings, where the his body rests.
Paul Mashatile, arts and culture minister, said the sculptors have apologized for any offense to those who felt the rabbit was disrespectful toward the legacy of Mandela.

The largest freshwater lake in China which covers an expanse twice the size of London has dried up because of an ongoing drought.

China's largest lake1 China's largest lake3

Poyang Lake in rural Jiangxi province is one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions.

But the combination of drought and a new water storage facility upstream at the Three Gorges reservoir – the world’s biggest dam – has caused water levels to drop to dangerously low levels.

Much of the 3,500 sq km lake’s water has now completely disappeared meaning tourists can now visit a pavilion and tower situated in the middle by foot instead of by the traditional boat.

China's largest lake4

The drought revealed an ancient stone bridge earlier this month which had been hidden underneath the lake’s water.

The 2,930-metre-long stone bridge, dating to AD1631, is made of granite and was one of around 1,000 similar stone bridges constructed during the Ming dynasty, the Beijing News reported.

The region faces drinking water shortages and the local fishing industry has been decimated.
