China starts televising the sunset on giant TV screens because Beijing is so clouded in smog

The smog has become so thick in Beijing that the city’s natural light-starved masses have begun flocking to huge digital commercial television screens across the city to observe virtual sunrises.

The futuristic screens installed in the Chinese capital usually advertize tourist destinations, but as the season’s first wave of extremely dangerous smog hit – residents donned air masks and left their homes to watch the only place where the sun would hail over the horizon that morning.

Commuters across Beijing found themselves cloaked in a thick, gray haze on Thursday as air pollution monitors issued a severe air warning and ordered the elderly and school children to stay indoors until the quality improved.

But the readings early Thursday for particles of PM2.5 pollution marked the first ones of the season above 500 micrograms per cubic meter.

Beijing authorities said the haze on Thursday had reduced the visibility to several hundred meters (yards) and that the severe pollution was likely to continue through Friday.

A level above 300 is considered hazardous, while the World Health Organization recommends a daily level of no more than 20.

Meet the young mum-to-be who is addicted to eating SOILED NAPPIES

Pregnant Keyshia loves nothing more than chewing on a urine soaked diaper and claims they taste like sour sweets

A mum-to-be is addicted to eating soiled nappies – and says the dirtier they are the better.

The pregnant woman, known only as Keyshia, has strange cravings for pee soaked diapers – and can’t stop herself sniffing and chewing on them.

She relies on friends and even strangers to supply her stash of dirty nappies – which she claims taste like sour sweets.

The woman is looking forward to having her first child so she will have a constant supply of nappies.

Keyshia, 22, said: “I love it, it just tastes amazing.

“It has to have pee in it, the heavier ones that have more pee smell better.

“You know when you’re walking into a room and you smell a strong smell like food and you kind of taste it? That’s what it’s like.”

Keyshia, of Queens, New York, is featured in My Strange Addiction on satellite channel TLC.

Police Found Explosive at Palestinian Embassy

Czech investigators have discovered explosives at the Palestinian embassy complex in Prague where a possibly booby-trapped safe killed the ambassador on Jan. 1, police said Thursday.

Police discovered 12 illegal weapons following the explosion at the embassy that killed Ambassador Jamal al-Jamal.

It remains unclear what caused the safe to explode but the ambassador’s death is being investigated as a case of negligence. Al-Jamal had only started his posting in October.

Police spokesman Tomas Hulan said they have sent the explosives for testing at Prague’s Institute of Criminology.

Police said Thursday they received a letter from the Palestinian authorities saying the weapons were given to them as gifts by the officials of the former communist Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia was part of the Soviet bloc that had warm ties with the Palestinian Liberation Organization.

According to police, the Palestinians said the weapons were never used and always kept in a safe.

Father spends six nights in -30C weather to build his own rainbow ICE FORT from hundreds of frozen plastic shoeboxes

օնտարիօ

As temperatures dropped to -30 degree Celsius, residents of Ontario could be forgiven for rejecting the great outdoors in favour of keeping warm inside.

But one father refused to be deterred by the bitter temperatures and found an ingenious way to pass the long winter hours of sub-zero temperatures by creating a colorful ice fort in his backyard.

Chris Marchand filled hundreds of eight-litre plastic shoeboxes with water and food colouring – he filled about 30 each day.

He stored them in his driveway for a month until he had created enough to create his vision.

Mr Marchand then set about building the boundary of a 25′ x 25′ fort – it took him six nights working in -30 degree Celsius temperatures to erect the wall.

When the work was complete he invited over his friends and family to enjoy a night in his creation, as he sat back and admired his vision as king of his castle.

Over one million Syrian refugees have fled to Lebanon, but not all are eligible for aid.

Refugees who are not registered with the United Nations have been forced to take desperate measures to survive.

Fourteen-year-old Hanifa has agreed to marry a 44-year-old Lebanese landlord. Her family can not afford to pay their monthly rent, so the owner of the house has demanded Hanifa become his second wife.

Lebanon hosts the largest number of refugees from Syria and aid agencies are calling the Syrian refugee crisis a humanitarian tragedy.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reports from northeastern Lebanon.

Thieves tried to steal the ashes of SIGMUND FREUD smashing the urn in botched raid on crematorium

Thieves have tried to steal the ashes of Sigmund Freud and his wife.

They broke an ancient Greek urn that contained the couple’s remains after breaking into a cemetery in Golders Green, north London.

The ‘irreplaceable’ urn, which was a gift to the founding father of psychoanalysis from Princess Marie Bonaparte, the great-grandniece of Napoleon, was ‘severely damaged’. The would-be thieves left empty-handed.

The urn was placed in the crematorium following Freud’s death in Hampstead in September 1939.

The ashes of his wife, Martha, were added to the urn when she died in 1951, aged 90.

A spokesman for the crematorium said the urn, which was ‘severely damaged’, has since been moved to a secure location and that security was now under review.

The crematorium in Hoop Lane has been the scene for the funerals of many British celebrities, including authors Bram Stoker, Enid Blyton and more recently Amy Winehouse and Peter Sellers.

Authorities on Thursday were still trying to put out the fire at the tunnel, which is between 30-105 meters (98-345 feet) deep, he said.

An investigation is underway.

The province is Vietnam’s main coal-mining region. Dozens of workers have been killed in the past decade in mining accidents there.

Shant could never imagine that this hobby would one day become his main source of income

IMG_2203Shant Khayalian was born in Aleppo in 1976. He attended Armenian school there, and continued his education in England attaining a degree in Advertising and Marketing.

After returning to Syria, Shant established several of his own enterprises, each one different from the other – an automotive spare parts shop, olive oil production, an advertisement company and a car repair center. Shant struggles to recall all of his businesses. For curious, restless, and innovative Shant, even Sundays were boring, so he decided to fill this day of rest with something new and asked his friend, a chemist, to suggest something interesting for him to learn and practice. The friend suggested making soap and Shant liked the idea. He learnt how to make soap, and he started creating soap using the olive oil he produced.

Around three months later, Shant managed to produce his first soaps. He also developed his production and invented new kinds of soaps using milk, carrot juice, parsley, chamomile, honey and other items. “I would produce the soaps not to gain an income, but because I enjoyed doing it. It was like a hobby – I would make gifts for my relatives and friends”, says Shant.

շանթ

Shant could never imagine that this hobby would one day become his main source of income.

The organic soaps produced by Shant do not contain chemical colors or aromas. They are entirely natural. However, in Armenia organic products are not fully appreciated. Shant noticed that when buying soap, people in Armenia smell it and if they like how it smells they will buy it. Shant thinks that this is the wrong attitude, because a good smell does not mean good quality. Instead, it shows existence of additional chemicals.

In 2012, when the situation in Syria became critical, Shant left his birthplace and moved to Armenia with his wife and daughter. Luckily, years ago Shant had bought an apartment in Yerevan, with the thought that his children might live there one day. “When we left, it had already been a month since I had closed the shops, because it was impossible to work in those conditions. Even on the last day, when I went to work I witnessed terrible scenes – burnt bodies in the streets”. “Before that, my car had been shot at twice by a sniper trying to kill me. Once there was such a huge blast near our house which injured my back due to the pressure it created. Another time, when we were sleeping, the window of our house broke because of a bullet. So we understood that it was the time to leave the country.”

While arranging his family’s move to Armenia, Shant’s friend from Jordan suggested he move there to begin a soap production business, so Shant left for Jordan alone. “My friend’s wife had a business of non-natural cosmetics and soap. I suggested to them that I produce my own soaps and we develop the business together.”

“I participated in a charitable fair in Jordan where I presented my production. After a month, I received a call from the Royal Palace informing me that the Queen liked our soaps very much and had invited us to the palace for a dinner reception”. But there was not only a dinner invitation. The soap makers also received appreciation letters, royal souvenirs and badges. They tried to convince Shant to stay and develop their soap business in Jordan, but Shant was determined to move to Armenia.

Observing the soap market of Armenia, he has met many people who produce soap and discovered that they all work in house and kitchen conditions – they bring the material from abroad, melt it, add colors and aromas, shape the soap and sell them. “I do everything myself. I even make the essential oils myself. The glycerin is also natural, and as far as I understand no one produces glycerin in Armenia – I am the first to do so.”

As Shant left Syria without financial means and there was no money to start a business, he applied to Small and Medium Business Development Center for a loan. He introduced his business plan and it got approved. The money was transferred six months later, during which Shant could hardly bear the idleness – he tries to do different jobs: teaching at the Eurasia University, giving private English lessons, even driving a taxi with his own car. “Life is hard, you have to run here and there. If you sit back you’ll get nothing. There are people who had a good life in Syria, but after losing what they had, they are not able to adjust to the idea that they will earn less in Armenia. I used to live well – I would spend several thousands of dollars within a week, but now I cannot earn that money in months. What should I do? Get disappointed? Do nothing? On the contrary, one shouldn’t get disappointed, one should act, be flexible and adjust to new situation.”

933943_270904829727398_597397948_n

Shant’s first product in Armenia – the Beauty Products – is already out. It has 8 kinds of soaps with olive oil, lemon and glycerin, apricot and blackcurrant. In Armenia, doctors advised him to also use frankincense flower, which is very beneficial for skin.

The label of the soaps note that they are handmade. Indeed, doing everything by hand is very difficult, but Shant considers it to be the uniqueness of his produce. He uses the technologies of 1688, so everything is done by hand.

Despite the huge volume of work and high quality, Shant wants to make the price of his produce available for the consumers, so that many people can use them in Armenia. A 110 gram bar of soap will cost around 600 AMD.

This is indeed wonderful. But Shant has not made it to the market yet. Currently he is looking for specialists to help him with marketing because he will not be able to manage it on his own. If his business is well established in Armenia, then Shant will seriously consider exporting his produce to external markets. Currently he has exported his products to Norway, France, Korea, China, Ukraine and other countries, where he received positive responses.

Despite the fact that the social and economic situation is not wonderful in Armenia, and starting things from scratch is very difficult, Shant still does not want to move to another country. He doesn’t want to return to Syria either, because he thinks that even if the war stops and businesses re-open, the situation and the atmosphere will not be the same as before. “I have chosen my path. I don’t need much. If I can provide for my family to a decent level, then I will not leave Armenia”, he says.

Shant thinks that the Syrian crisis has given him an opportunity to return to the homeland and live there. “History teaches us lessons, but we still don’t take them into consideration. After the massacres of 1915, we were scattered and during the 1988 events we scattered again. Then, with the war in Iraq, the Armenians came and left again. Now the Syrian Armenians are arriving here… Eventually, everyone should understand that we don’t have space in a foreign land. Indeed, we are born and raised there, we lived there and are thankful for that, but an Armenian should live on Armenian land”, says Shant Khayalian, who is already a member at Repat Armenia and considers himself a true repatriate.

The great haul of China: Huge wall of cash worth £1.3million set to be distributed to villagers who all have a stake in business co-operative

չինացի գյուղացիներ

Villagers built a great wall of cash in China after their cooperative stacked up huge profits.

The giant wads worth 13 million yuan (£1.3million) in total were laid out in a 2m tall ‘money wall’ at Jianshe village in the Lianshan municipality, in south-west China’s Sichuan province.

Several residents even slept on the notes overnight to guard them from thieves before the end of year bonuses were distributed the following day.

չինացի գյուղացիներ

Yang Huai, who received 200,000 yuan, said it had been a custom in the village since 2010 to distribute the bonus in cash before the Chinese New Year.

Some 340 out of a total number of 483 households are the shareholders of a rural cooperative established that year, which profits from pig farms, cherry orchards, and its investment in four small scale hydropower plants in Sichuan, said a village official surnamed Zhu.

The villagers are guaranteed an annual bonus, despite villagers not being directly involved in the cooperative’s daily operations.

Oxford University accidentally sends email to all undergraduates naming and shaming the worst performing students

An Oxford University college has upset its students after accidentally sending out a list of the worst performers to hundreds of their fellow undergraduates.

The embarrassing leak revealed the names and grades of students at University College who had the lowest marks in the pre-Christmas exams.

But almost 50 who achieved a 2:2 grade – a mark below 60 per cent – or worse in the Michaelmas collections had their results sent to fellow students.

The information was contained in an Excel document accidentally sent out by Kristiana Dahl, an academic administrator at University College, which counts Stephen Hawking and Bill Clinton among its alumni.

It showed the worst-performing students in the college, as well as their percentage mark and their degree subject.

Officials have not revealed how many students received the email but it is thought it was sent to hundreds at University College – known as ‘Univ’.

Staff quickly asked students to ‘please delete the email previously sent out as it contained inaccuracies’.

One of the students affected, who did not wish to be identified, told student newspaper The Tab: “I don’t ever want to do collections again.
‘I was pretty gutted after my results last term, but didn’t realise I would be publicly humiliated. I can’t even go into college any more.

‘I want a full explanation from the college. I would sue but there are apparently no decent lawyers at Univ.’

Boy, 12, opens fire at school pupils

A 12-year-old boy entered his middle school gym, pulled a shotgun out of a bag and opened fire on students waiting for school to start Tuesday, wounding two, authorities in Roswell, New Mexico, said.

A girl, 13, was in stable condition Tuesday night following surgery, authorities said. A boy, 11, was in critical condition after surgery.

The horror might have been much worse if not for one staff member. “(He) walked right up to him and asked him to put down the firearm,” said New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez.

Authorities detained a seventh-grader who is “responsible for this,” said State Police Chief Pete Kassetas.

Investigators didn’t yet have a motive for the shooting, Kassetas added.

State police planned to interview more than 100 students and faculty Tuesday. “We’re going to be here for quite some time,” the police chief told reporters Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators will examine “social media outlets and the forms of communication that students use,” Kassetas said.

Tiger Prowling for Food Kills 7 in Northern India

A tiger prowling for food has killed seven people in northern India in the past two weeks, forcing thousands of terrified villagers to stay inside while hunters try to kill the animal, authorities said Wednesday.

The tiger’s latest victim was a woman whose body was found in a forest Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh state, said Rupak De, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests. The tiger, a female, has been on the prowl across an area spanning some 80 miles (130 kilometers).

“A hunt has been launched to kill the tigress that has turned into a man-eater,” De said.

Reports that a killer tiger was on the loose began circulating Dec. 29, when a 65-year-old man was mauled in Sambhal district.

The tiger is believed to have strayed into the area from Jim Corbett National Park.

Wildlife activist and member of Parliament Meneka Gandhi has appealed to Uttar Pradesh’s government not to shoot the tiger. In a letter to forest officials, she said the animal was only attacking people because it is hungry and would spare humans once it returns to its natural habitat.

She said the Uttar Pradesh government should capture the tiger and release it in the neighboring state of Uttarakhand.

Ronaldo struggles to hold back the tears as his son joins him to collect prestigious football award… before he sparks wedding rumours by calling Irina Shayk his ‘wife’

Cristiano Ronaldo sparked rumours that he and girlfriend Irina Shayk may have married in secret when he referred to her as ‘my wife’ in an emotional acceptance speech after being crowned the FIFA World Player of the Year for the second time.

The 28-year-old sportsman was joined by both Russian model girlfriend Irina, also 28, and his three-year-old son Cristiano Junior as he claimed the coveted Ballon d’Or at the ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland, on Monday night.

In his tearful acceptance speech, Ronaldo said: ‘First of all I have to stay a great thanks to all of my team mates with the club and the national team. Without all their efforts this would not have been possible. I am very happy, it is very difficult to win this award.

Wearing a Dsquared2 Classic custom made grey tuxedo, Ronaldo was honoured after scoring 66 goals in 56 appearances for club and country Portugal in 2013, as he finally reclaimed the trophy he last held in 2008.

The footballer’s second win also means that he has broken the stranglehold of his great adversary Lionel Messi.

On his rivalry with Messi, Ronaldo said: ‘I have a very professional relationship with Messi, he’s a player I admire.

Messi had held exclusive rights to the award in recent seasons as he became the first player to win the Ballon d’Or four consecutive times.

Beyonce calls gender equality ‘a myth’ as she writes a plea for female empowerment in Maria Shriver’s new report

բեյոնսե

Beyonce Knowles has written an essay on gender equality in which she calls for actions in regards to equal payment in the workforce. The piece, which is featured on Maria Shriver’s “Shriver Report: A Woman’s Nation Pushes Back from the Brink”, is entitled “Gender Equality Is a Myth!“.

“We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality. It isn’t a reality yet,” Beyonce wrote. “Today, women make up half of the U.S. workforce, but the average working woman earns only 77 percent of what the average working man makes. But unless women and men both say this is unacceptable, things will not change.”

“Men have to demand that their wives, daughters, mothers, and sisters earn more – commensurate with their qualifications and not their gender. Equality will be achieved when men and women are granted equal pay and equal respect,” she continued, encouraging people to teach young boys gender equality and girls to dream higher.

“We have a lot of work to do, but we can get there if we work together. Women are more than 50 percent of the population and more than 50 percent of voters. We must demand that we all receive 100 percent of the opportunities,” she concluded.

Indian Hindu worshippers drink COW URINE to help prevent cancer

images (3)

A growing cult of Hindu worshippers in India believe that drinking fresh cow urine will help prevent cancer.

Hindus believe the cow to be a sacred animal and claim that the urine has divine healing properties.

Jairam Singhal is a firm believer in its health benefits and has been drinking it for over a decade.

“I had diabetes, but ever since I have started drinking cow urine, my diabetes levels have been under control,” said the 42-year-old.

“Someone told me drinking cow urine is good for health.

“We have had cows here for over 12 years now, so first thing in the morning we take cow urine and drink it.”

In the north Indian city of Agra, dozens gather at the cow shelter of DD Singhal to have a fresh glass of cow urine.

“Lots of people come here. And of late, the numbers have been rising. We all gather in the morning and drink fresh urine that Mother cow offers us,” Singhal said.

“Just a few years ago, there would hardly be anyone interested in taking cow urine from our shelter.

“But today lots of people come to our cow shelter. There are cancer patients sometimes – they want to see the benefits of cow urine.”

Many say the recent increase in the number of people drinking cow urine can be attributed to campaigns run by spiritual leaders.

Followers of the cult claim cow urine can successful be used to cancer, diabetes, tumours, tuberculosis, stomach problems and much more. They also claim that drinking cow pee is the only solution for treating baldness.

“Only two things are pure in this universe, in this world. One is the water from the Holy Ganges river and the other is urine from mother holy cow,” Ramesh Gupta, a Hindu priest, said.

“Cow urine has been mentioned in ancient Hindu scriptures. No one can doubt the good effects it has on the human body. It is a divine gift from God.”

Followers like Gupta, however, insist that urine from every cow cannot be beneficial.

“The cow, whose urine one has to drink, should be a virgin – she must not have delivered a calf. Also, the urine is to be collected just before sunrise – that urine has the best effect,” he said.
