Amorella_ferry-finnish

A Finnish ferry operator says one of its Sweden-bound vessels is stuck on rocks in the Baltic Sea but none of the nearly 2,000 passengers were injured or in any danger.

Viking Line says the M/S Amorella hit the rocks after a power failure on the ship at midday Saturday as it was on its way from the Finnish port of Turku to Stockholm with 1,945 passengers.

In a statement, the operator said a minor leak has been found in a ballast tank but stressed the ship was not taking in water.

The Aland Islands, a group of semi-autonomous Finnish islands, are midway between the two port cities and the ferry was making a scheduled stop there.

Thousands Evacuated From Flooded Gaza Homes

Գազա, հեղեղ

An official says Gaza’s rescue service has evacuated more than 4,000 people from homes flooded after four days of heavy rain across the territory.

The downpour continued Saturday. It’s part of a storm that covered Jerusalem and some of the West Bank with thick snow.

In Gaza, some of those trapped by rising waters were evacuated by fishing boats.

Mohammed al-Madaina of the Gaza rescue service says efforts were hampered by lack of fuel and power, a result of a tightened Egyptian border closure. Israel and Egypt have restricted access to Gaza since the Islamic militant Hamas seized the territory in 2007.

Iran Arrests Man on Charges of Spying for Britain

iran-arrests spy

Iran’s media says authorities have arrested a man on charges of spying for Britain.

The semiofficial ISNA news agency said Saturday the man was arrested in the town of Kerman in southeastern Iran after authorities spent months tracking him down.

A Kerman judiciary official, who was not named by ISNA, said the man had exchanged information with four British intelligence operatives. The man has not been identified but the report says he is currently standing trial and has confessed.

Iran periodically announces the arrest of alleged foreign agents. Often few further details are released.

The arrest comes as Iran and Britain are patching up ties following the election of moderate President Hassan Rouhani in June. The British Embassy in Tehran was closed in late 2011 after hardliners overran the building.

Today, the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Italy to the Republic of Armenia Giovanni Ricciulli presented his credentials to President Serzh Sargsyan.

The President congratulated Ambassador Ricciulli on his appointment and wished him every success. He also expressed hope that Ambassador Ricciulli will make his input to the consistent development of friendly relations between Armenia and Italy.

Noting with satisfaction that during the tenure of the former Italian Ambassador Bruno Scapini the Armenian-Italian relations reached a qualitatively new level and the agenda of bilateral cooperation was significantly expanded, Serzh Sargsyan expressed confidence that based on that work and historically close relations of the two peoples, during the new Ambassador’s tenure in office bilateral relations will become even closer.

The parties stressed the importance of developing and expanding economic cooperation, considering the fact that Italy is one of Armenia’s major trade partners among the EU countries.

The interlocutors concurred that cultural, educational and scientific cooperation between Armenia and Italy is an important element of the interstate relations in the light of the rich cultural heritage of the two countries and existing huge educational and scientific potential.

The President of Armenia expressed hope that during Italy’s Chairmanship in EU in 2014, Eastern Partnership will remain among the priorities.

Ambassador Giovanni Ricciulli assured that during that period too his country will continue to assist Armenia in the implementation of reforms in the framework of its European agenda.

Iran Says New US Sanctions Violate Geneva Deal

A senior Iranian nuclear negotiator says new sanctions by the United States on Iranian companies and individuals violate the spirit of a deal made between Tehran and the West over its nuclear program.

Abbas Araghchi told official news agency IRNA Thursday that “this is a game of double standards — it is not in accord with the talks we have had and it is against the spirit of the Geneva agreement.”

He strongly criticized the sanctions, calling them “unconstructive and against good intentions.”

The United States has targeted more than a dozen companies and people for allegedly evading sanctions against Iran.

Last month Tehran agreed to cap its uranium enrichment in exchange for an easing of Western sanctions.

Laughter might NOT be the best medicine after all: Study finds it can cause epileptic fits, ruptured hearts and torn gulletsLaughter might NOT be the best medicine after all: Study finds it can cause epileptic fits, ruptured hearts and torn gullets

 ծիծաղ, էպիլեպտիկ նոպաներ

Laughter may not be the best medicine after all and could even harm us, new research has revealed.

Despite the known benefits of chuckling, for some people it has proven to be more dangerous than expected.

One woman with racing heart syndrome collapsed and died after a giggling fit, say researchers.

And laughing ‘fit to burst’ has been found to cause possible heart rupture, a torn gullet and epileptic seizures.

A quick intake of breath during laughing can provoke an asthma attack, while some people have suffered from incontinence and even hernias.

Researchers from Birmingham and Oxford Universities used data from 1946 to the present day to study the benefits of laughing on the human body.

During one test clowns were sent into hospitals to entertain patients.

And the results showed a dose of ‘genuine laughter’ for a whole day could help shed the pounds by burning 2,000 calories.

Tittering was also linked with lowering blood sugar in diabetic patients and reducing arterial wall stiffness, which helps relieve tension.

The researchers say their findings challenge the view that laughter can only be beneficial but do add that humour in any form carries a ‘low risk of harm and may be beneficial’.

The paper was published in the Christmas edition of The British Medical Journal.

Ukraine President Proposes Protester Amnesty

Ուկրաինա, ցուցարարներ

Ukraine’s president proposed an amnesty Friday for all protesters facing criminal charges in the country’s wave of massive anti-government demonstrations.

President Viktor Yanukovych made the offer at a round-table meeting that included three leaders of the opposition that has orchestrated more than three weeks of anti-government protests, flooding the streets of Kiev with hundreds of thousands of people.

There was no immediate reaction from the opposition figures, who earlier had said they were going to the meeting only to state their demands, including that the government resign and early parliamentary and presidential elections be held.

In another possible sign of progress, the deputy prime minister said that Ukraine wants to soon sign the agreement to deepen economic and political ties with the EU.

Yet this economically troubled nation of 46 million is deeply divided over the EU deal. Many people in eastern Ukraine, the country’s rural heartland, are against the protesters in Kiev and want the country to have closer economic ties with Russia.

Dozens of G20 diplomats had computers hacked after clicking on an attachment labelled ‘To see naked pictures of Carla Bruni click here’

Կառլա Բրունի

Nude pictures of former French first lady Carla Bruni were used to break in to the computer systems of dozens of diplomats, it emerged today.

The shocking security breach was first discovered at the G20 summit in Paris in February 2011 and may be ongoing.

‘To see naked pictures of Carla Bruni click here’ said a message sent to those attending, who included finance ministers and central bank representatives.

This prompted many to open an attachment which turned out to be a ‘Trojan Horse’ with an embedded virus, although all recipients could see were the X-rated photographs.

‘Almost everybody who received the email took the bait,’ said a government source in Paris, saying that this included representatives from the Czech Republic, Portugal, Bulgaria, Hungary and Latvia.

The so-called phishing attacks are thought to have originated in China and were aimed at extracting information.

The attacks are still being investigated, and nobody is yet sure what information was extracted.

America is thought to have been the main target of the scam.

Spanish government rejects Catalonia independence vote

Իսպանիա,Կատալոնիա,անկախության հանրաքվե

The president of Spain’s regional government of Catalonia said Thursday he wants to hold an independence referendum on Nov. 9, 2014, but the Spanish government immediately said no.

Artur Mas announced in the Catalan capital Barcelona that the referendum would ask the region’s voters if they want Catalonia to be a state and, if so, should it be independent.

Mas did not clarify the distinction between a state and an independent state. However, the questions appeared to open a door for those nationalists who want Catalonia to have the structure of a state but remain a part of Spain, possibly along the lines of Puerto Rico and the United States.

Իսպանիա,Կատալոնիա,անկախության հանրաքվե

Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon responded to Mas’ announcement, saying a referendum would be illegal and would not be allowed.

Spain’s Constitution says only the central government in Madrid can call a referendum, and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy recently rejected a request by Mas to allow one. The government has not said what it might do to prevent a ballot.

Polls indicate that Catalans are roughly evenly split on independence. The European Union and NATO have warned Catalonia it would be excluded if it seceded.

French café begins fining customers for rudeness… with a coffee costing seven euros if you do not say ‘please’ or wish the barista a nice day

սուրճ

It’s said that good manners don’t cost you anything and, for the customers of one café, they could even help save the pennies.

A café in the south of France has called out its less well-mannered customers by hiking the price of a coffee if they don’t say please.

The Petite Syrah café in Nice, on the French Riviera, is charging customers €7 for ‘a coffee’, but a more affordable €4.25 for a ‘a coffee please’.

But those customers who request their caffeinated beverage with a cheery ‘good day, a coffee please’ get the best deal of all. Their coffees will set them back just €1.40.

The French are well known for their love of pleasantries.

So when standards drop it can be a particularly unpleasant shock, which is why the Petite Syrah has decided to enforce polite deportment by hitting rude customers in their pockets.

Fabrice Pepino, manager of the Petite Syrah, says the sign has been a success. He’s never been actually had to enforce the novel pricing scheme, he said, but has nevertheless noticed a marked difference in the behaviour of his customers.

Australian judges overturn law allowing gay marriage and declare 27 weddings invalid

Ավստրալիա,նույնասեռականների ամուսնություններ, օրենք

Australia’s highest court has overturned a landmark law which had begun allowing the country’s first gay marriages.

The federal government challenged the validity of the Australian Capital Territory’s law that had allowed gay marriages in the nation’s capital and its surrounding area from last Saturday.

It means at least 27 weddings have been deemed invalid.

The federal government’s lawyer argued that having different marriage laws in various Australian states and territories would create confusion.

The High Court unanimously ruled that the ACT’s law could not operate concurrently with the federal Marriage Act, which was amended in 2004 to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

Gay marriage has legal recognition in 18 countries as well as 16 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia.

David Cameron and Danish PM brush off criticism of Mandela memorial selfie

Cameron, Thorning-Schmidt and Obama

David Cameron and the Danish prime minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt, have brushed off criticism of their decision to pose for a “selfie” photograph at a memorial service for Nelson Mandela alongside the US president, Barack Obama.

The British prime minister said he was being polite when Thorning-Schmidt, the daughter-in-law of the former Labour leader Neil Kinnock, asked him to take part in the picture.

He told parliament on Wednesday: “In my defence I’d say that Nelson Mandela played an extraordinary role in his life and in his death in bringing people together.”

The photo went viral on Tuesday, prompting accusations from some of poor taste. Many noted that Michelle Obama looked on stony-faced during the rainy event in Soweto.

Thorning-Schmidt described her impromptu snap as “not inappropriate”.Speaking to the Danish media she said: “There were plenty of pictures that day. We’ve taken very many pictures of Obama, and I just think that it was kind of funny. It shows perhaps that when we meet from state and government, we too are just people who have fun together.”

She added: “There was obviously a sombreness but basically it was a festive event, which also celebrated a man who had lived for 95 years and achieved so much in his life. It was a big stadium, it was going on. There was singing and dancing, so there was a positive mood. And then we took a fun selfie.”

After the picture made headlines around the world, Cameron was challenged over his behaviour by Martin Horwood, a Liberal Democrat MP.

“Has the prime minister had the opportunity to discuss international mobile phone usage with any other European heads of government over the last day or so?” Horwood asked during the weekly prime minister’s question time in the House of Commons.

MPs laughed as Cameron replied: “You could say, in a roundabout way. Perhaps, in my defence, you should always remember that the television cameras are always on.

“But in my defence I would say that Nelson Mandela played an extraordinary role in his life and in his death in bringing people together. So of course when a member of the Kinnock family asked me for a photograph, I thought it was only polite to say yes.”

selfie-combo_mEarlier, the prime minister’s official spokesman declined to say Cameron regretted the behaviour or to accept the world leaders had been “larking around at a funeral”.

The photographer who took the picture of the three leaders posing for the selfie, Roberto Schmidt of the news agency AFP, said he felt the trio were “simply acting like human beings”.

Writing on the AFP correspondent blog, Schmidt said: “I took these photos totally spontaneously, without thinking about what impact they might have.

“At the time, I thought the world leaders were simply acting like human beings, like me and you. I doubt anyone could have remained totally stony-faced for the duration of the ceremony, while tens of thousands of people were celebrating in the stadium.

“For me, the behaviour of these leaders in snapping a selfie seems perfectly natural.”

Schmidt said it was wrong to suggest that Michelle Obama had been “rather peeved” at the group shot. “Photos can lie. In reality, just a few seconds earlier the first lady was herself joking with those around her, Cameron and Schmidt included. Her stern look was captured by chance.”

Reaction on social media in Denmark has been split between those who felt the mobile selfie was a gaffe, and others who pointed out that this was not actually a funeral and that the atmosphere in the World Cup stadium was decidedly upbeat.

The selfie, meanwhile, was a rare moment of glamour for Denmark’s PM amid domestic chaos. Earlier this week the justice minister resigned for allegedly lying to parliament. On Wednesday Denmark’s foreign secretary Villy Søvndal quit because of poor health.

Caught in the act: Burgling baboons break into apartment and trash the place

o_861508

A bunch of burgling baboons broke into a flat in Cape Town and wreaked absolute havoc in the process.

Around 10 chacma baboons scaled the building before one of the cheeky monkeys managed to prize a third-floor window open.

They set about trashing the place, before making off with food and even a giant teddy bear.

Around 500 of the animals are said to be terrorising the neighbourhood, trawling through bins and helping themselves to whatever they please.

The species are protected so residents can only fight back with paintball guns and pepper spray rather than stronger methods.

Pope Francis beats out Edward Snowden and twerking Miley Cyrus to be named Time’s 2013 Person of the Year

պապ Ֆրանցիսկ

Pope Francis has been named 2013 Person of the Year by Time magazine – edging out NSA whistleblower and fugitive Edward Snowden into second place.

Pope Francis, 76, who was elected in March to lead the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics, was announced as the winner this morning by Time magazine editor Nancy Gibbs on the Today show.

The other five final contenders in the running for the prestigious honor were President of Syria, Bashar Assad, Texas Tea Party champion Senator Ted Cruz and gay rights activist Edith Windsor whose Supreme Court victory led to the fall of the Defense of Marriage Act.

The title last year went to President Barack Obama, who also won in 2008 and in 2011, the respected news magazine awarded the title to the Protester, in recognition of their revolutionary role in the Arab Spring that year.

Describing Francis’ transformative role in his short time as pontiff, Time magazine said that ‘Rarely has a new player on the world stage captured so much attention so quickly.’

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told Today in a statement that ‘the Holy Father is not looking to become famous or to receive honors.

‘But if the choice of Person of Year helps spread the message of the gospel — a message of God’s love for everyone — he will certainly be happy about that.’

The luxury nail polish that contains 24-carat GOLD (but it only costs £18… and Lady Gaga’s a fan)

Boom Boom Pow - Deborah Lippmann

While not everything that glitters is gold, the sparkling new polish from celebrity manicurist Deborah Lippmann most certainly is.

Instead of metallic plastic, the festive sparkle in Boom Boom Pow, £18, was created by including shavings of real 24-carat gold.

And with famous fans that include Lady Gaga, Lena Dunham, Kelly Clarkson and Sarah Jessica Parker, the luxury lacquer has already secured the A-list seal of approval.

But Boom Boom Pow isn’t the only Lippmann polish to contain an unexpectedly expensive ingredient: also available are polishes that contain powdered diamonds and crushed pearls.

As a result, the brand has become a regular on the fashion circuit with Valentino, Bulgari and Burberry among those to enlist Lippmann for their shows.

The manicurist has also created bespoke looks for some of the biggest celebrity names in the business.

Among the A-list approved hues are Lara’s Theme, a bright orange-coral created with the help of model Lara Stone, and the glamorous deep-red Just Walk Away Renee, which was originally made for Renee Zellweger.

Solved, the art of Christmas gifts: Research finds you should buy all your family and friends the same present

նոր տարվա նվեր

Christmas shopping is about to get a whole lot easier.

Research suggests we are wasting our time by spending hours choosing different gifts for our friends.

Instead, they’d be happier to all be given the same thing.

Scientists say when we choose presents for lots of people we tend to focus too much on trying to get everyone a different thing.

As a result, we don’t buy them the things they’d really like.

In other words, by trying to be thoughtful, we choose the wrong present.

The US researchers did six experiments in which they shoppers were asked to choose a gift or card for one person or for presents for two people with similar interests.

When shopping for one, the volunteers tended to choose the most appealing gift.

But when shopping for two, they tended to pass up the more appealing gift in favour of getting different presents for each person.

The University of Cincinnati researchers said: ‘It may seem more thoughtful to give individual gifts that convey an understanding of each recipient’s unique identity than to give less personalised gifts, even if those less personalised gifts may be liked better overall.

If that wasn’t enough to persuade you to not waste too much time on your Christmas shopping, previous research has shown that recipients tend to underestimate the price of gifts. They also fail to fully appreciate the amount of thought put in.

Bavaria to Keep Blocking ‘Mein Kampf’ Publication

Bavaria’s state government says it will try to keep Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” out of publication in Germany after the copyright expires in 2015 — reversing a decision to support new editions with critical commentary.

“Mein Kampf” isn’t actually banned in Germany, but Bavaria has used its ownership of the copyright to block publication. The copyright expires 70 years after the author’s death.

The Bavarian governor’s chief of staff, Christine Haderthauer, said late Tuesday Hitler’s anti-Semitic memoir amounts to incitement and the government will file a criminal complaint if anyone tries to publish it in the future, news agency dpa reported.

Governor Horst Seehofer pointed to Bavaria’s participation in a drive to have modern Germany’s main far-right party banned and said that doesn’t fit with supporting publication of “Mein Kampf.”
