Earthquake-proof table invented to save the lives of millions of school children worldwide

earthquake proof table (1)Experts once advised people to run for a doorway when the earth begins to shake, now that’s out the window and scientists suggest jumping under the nearest table.

Two Israel scientist have a solution for that: earthquake-proof tables.

Designed to withstand downward impacts of up to one ton, the table is the brainchild of Israeli inventors Arthur Brutter and Ido Bruno.

Brutter and Bruno say the idea came out of the pressing need to protect school children in the developing world at risk of death and injury when earthquakes that strike their structurally unsound schools.

Then Brutter witnessed footage of 2010’s catastrophic Haiti earthquake in which an estimated 200,000 people died as poorly constructed homes and schools easily buckled in the face of the 7.0 magnitude temblor.

‘I looked at pictures of a school that was crushed in the earthquake in Haiti and they really shocked me,’ he said.

The solution is a cheap to make, easy to lift table for school children that can withstand massive impact when used as shelter from earthquake debris.

The tables, when placed in rows like classroom desks, also act as a means of escape.

With debris halted above, students can crawl through the clear passageways created by the tables, as can rescue workers.

First tested by the Israeli military, the desk is now undergoing strict testing at PaduaUniversity’s Structural Engineering department in Italy.

According to Brutter and Bruno, some 300 million school children worldwide are at risk from earthquakes because their buildings aren’t prepared for them. The team sees their earthquake proof table as a way to prevent deaths and injuries.

The two have been applauded around the world for their invention and received numerous awards.

Congratulatory Address by President Serzh Sargsyan on the occasion of Constitution Day

սերժ սարգսյանDear Compatriots,

I congratulate you on the occasion of Constitution Day.

July 5 is indeed a momentous day for us. On that day, our people made their historic choice. At the same time, everyone knew that it was impossible through a referendum, just in one day to become a democratic, social, and legal state. It is a long way and a serious process.

The Main Law of our land is called upon to guarantee rights and freedoms of our citizens. We, as a state and as a society, step by step are getting closer to the remarkable goal enshrined in our Constitution.

Dear Compatriots,

Once again conveying my congratulations on the occasion of this significant state holiday, I wish us all to have a state, which grows stronger by day, strong guarantees for protection of human rights and freedoms, and application of the rule of law in all areas of our social life.

Shocking footage shows Russian doctor caught viciously beating defenceless heart patient who died soon after in intensive care

An experienced doctor was caught on camera twice viciously beating a heart patient as he lay tied to an intensive care bed.

The defenceless patient died soon afterwards and the medic, Andrey Votyakov, blamed his frenzied attack on exhaustion after a busy 24-hour shift.

Police are now probing the Russian doctor – who previous had an unblemished record – for his cruel assault on the middle-aged man soon after he underwent surgery at a hospital in Perm, in the Urals.

The shocking 30-second video clearly shows a verbal argument between a doctor and the tethered patient at the Federal Cardo-Surgery Centre in the industrial city.

Then the doctor hits out, striking the patient first on the head and soon afterwards in the area of his heart.

He was evidently unaware that his brutal attack – which has now cost him his job – was being filmed on a camera focused on the patient’s bed.

‘It was a hard day after a 24 hour shift,’ claimed Votyakov, chief of the prestigious hospital’s anaesthesiology and intensive care department, after the footage went viral on the Russian web.

‘As soon as I came into the room with my team he started to call me various derogative names.  And I just got blown away by it.
‘We had spent so much time with his very complicated case to help him recover and he said not a single word of gratitude.

‘And then the chronic tiredness added to it. I got carried away, and I punched him several times at the presence of my colleagues.’

The camera does not show any other doctors or nurses seeking to intervene.

‘We continued the treatment after the incident, but sadly the patient died.

‘I am very sorry for what happened and I want to apologise first of all to the patient himself and his family.’

The incident was in February this year but the footage was only recently made public.

The patient was a man aged ‘over 45’ from Kirov region. There has been no comment so far from the patient’s family.

Votyakov’s boss, Sergey Sukhanov, announced today that he was firing the violent medic.

There were predictions that the doctor would face jail and ruin over his attack, though it is so far unclear what charges he may face.

Retired Italian zookeeper, 72, mauled to death by tigers he kept at closed-down zoo as he tried to feed them

italian police in tiger's cage. TurinAn elderly zookeeper was ripped to pieces and eaten by his own tigers when he went to feed them.

Mauro Lagiard, 72, was attacked from behind as he entered the enclosure at a closed-down zoo, near Turin, in northern Italy.

In a horrific scene he was dragged 100ft while his wife watched helplessly from outside the cage.

His dismembered body was later found by the tigers’ water trough, police said.

Mr Lagiard and his wife had cared for the tigers since the small animal sanctuary was closed down in 2010 at the peak of the economic crisis.

The couple lived on site near the tigers’ enclosure in a camper van.

The retired zoo keeper was ‘utterly fearless’ and devoted to the animals according to reports in the Italian media.

After hearing desperate screams his wife Carla called for medics.

But the 73-year-old, who walked with the help of two sticks, was powerless to come to her husband’s aid and could only watch in agony from outside the cage.

The tiger that attacked first was the one he loved the most, according to reports, even though the same animal had attacked him before two years ago causing him to spend eight months in hospital.

But neighbours said the animals were malnourished and aggressive. They were fed just twice a week.

They are currently in the care of vets while their fate is decided. Samir is likely to be put down, according to reports.

Russia’s Putin Signs Law Limiting Adoption by Gays

Vladimir PutinPresident Vladimir Putin has signed a bill that sharply limits the adoption of Russian children by people from countries that allow same-sex marriage.

The new law prohibits adoption by same-sex foreign couples whose homeland recognizes their union as marriage, as well as by single people or unmarried couples from those countries.

A Kremlin statement said the measure is intended to guarantee children a “harmonious” upbringing and protect them from “complexes, emotional suffering and stress.”

The bill signed Wednesday is the latest move by Russia to buck the Western trend toward greater acceptance of homosexuality. On Sunday, Putin approved a ban on giving children any information about gays.

The adoption bill further shrinks the possibilities for 600,000 Russian children without parental custody. Last year, Russia banned all adoptions by Americans.

Married spy couple jailed in Germany after spying for their Russian paymasters for 25 years

A married spy couple have been jailed in Germany after being found guilty of espionage for their Russian paymasters for 25 years.

The couple, codenamed Andreas and Heidrun Anschlag, are said to have settled in former West Germany on false passports a quarter of a century ago.

They began their snooping career in the same city – Dresden – where Russian leader Vladimir Putin was posted for the KGB.

The duo are accused of first feeding information about West Germany to the former Soviet Union, then the reunited land to the Russian Republic.

‘The accused had the task of gathering information about the political and military strategy of the EU and NATO,’ said the prosecutor at their trial, as well as ‘security-relevant political aspects of relations between Germany, the EU and NATO to Russia.’

Investigators said it was due to information gleaned from the interrogations in America that led to the arrests of the spy duo in Germany.

Two Austrian passports, both said to be forgeries made by the counterfeiters of the SVR, were seized when they were taken into custody.

A court in Stuttgart gave Andreas Anschlag six years and six months, and Heidrun five years and six months.

Their daughter was born and raised in Germany and knew nothing of their activities – nor of their true identities before they became spies.

Despite Lavish Public Praise, U.S. is Deeply Troubled by Erdogan

Harut SassounianBy Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

Some months ago I wrote a column titled “Obama is Exploiting Turkish Leaders’ Craving for Flattery,” explaining that the U.S. President is able to persuade Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to do his bidding by taking advantage of his weakness for lavish praise!

Those aware of Erdogan’s authoritarian streak — on full display during the recent brutal attacks on protesters in Istanbul and other Turkish cities — have been deeply troubled by U.S. officials’ repeated mischaracterization of the Prime Minister’s dictatorial regime as ‘a role model for the Islamic world.’

The insincerity of such assessments was exposed when WikiLeaks made public thousands of confidential diplomatic cables from the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, indicating that American officials’ real opinion about Erdogan is the exact opposite of what they have been stating in public.

The Embassy dispatches, published by the German magazine Der Spiegel, described the Turkish Prime Minister “as a power-hungry Islamist surrounded by corrupt and incompetent ministers.” In a May 2005 cable, the U.S. Embassy surmised that Erdogan never had a realistic view of the world and believes he was chosen by God to lead Turkey. A knowledgeable source told American officials that “Tayyip believes in God … but does not trust him.”

U.S. diplomats report that the Prime Minister gets almost all his information from Islamist-leaning newspapers, ignoring the input of his own ministers. The Turkish military and intelligence services no longer share with him some of their reports. He trusts no one completely, surrounding himself with “an iron ring of sycophantic (but contemptuous) advisors.” Despite Erdogan’s macho behavior, he is reportedly terrified of losing his grip on power.

Although the Turkish leader declared war on corruption when he first assumed office, informants told U.S. Embassy officials that corruption exists at all levels, even within the Erdogan family. A senior government advisor confidentially told a journalist that the Prime Minister enriched himself from the privatization of a state oil refinery. An Energy Ministry official alleged that Erdogan asked Iranians to sign a gas pipeline deal with a Turkish company owned by an old schoolmate. Furthermore, two American sources claimed that the Prime Minister had eight Swiss bank accounts. Erdogan has denied all such allegations, insisting that his wealth is mostly derived from gifts received at his son’s wedding, and acknowledging that an anonymous Turkish businessman has been paying the expenses of his four children to study in the United States. Such explanations are viewed by the American Embassy as “lame.”

The Embassy’s cables contain many other startling accusations against Erdogan. Informants have told U.S. officials that when his political party’s candidate lost the Trabzon mayoral race, the Prime Minister allegedly funneled millions of dollars from a secret government account to his close friend Faruk Nafiz Ozak whom he had named as head of the local Trabzonspor football club. The money was for hiring top players so that the soccer team’s victories would overshadow the accomplishments of the elected mayor.

According to a cable sent by former U.S. Ambassador Eric Edelman, Erdogan’s appointees lacked “technocratic depth.” While some “appear to be capable of learning on the job, others are incompetent or seem to be pursuing private … interests.” High-ranking Turkish officials have informed the American Embassy in Ankara that they are appalled by the Prime Minister’s staff. Erdogan reportedly appointed as his undersecretary a man exhibiting “incompetence, prejudices and ignorance.” The Women’s Minister Nimet Cubukcu, an advocate of criminalizing adultery, obtained her position because she happened to be a friend of the Prime Minister’s wife. Another minister is accused of “nepotism, links to heroin smuggling, and a predilection for underage girls.”

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, highly-praised by U.S. officials in public, also comes under private scrutiny and criticism. According to confidential American Embassy cables, Davutoglu “understands little about politics outside of Ankara.” In fact, U.S. diplomats are alarmed “by his imperialistic tone … and his neo-Ottoman vision.” In a January 2010 dispatch, the American Ambassador reported that Turkey has “Rolls Royce ambitions but Rover resources.” Former Defense Minister Mehmet Gonul was also critical of the Foreign Minister, warning American officials about his “Islamist influence on Erdogan,” and calling him “exceptionally dangerous.”

Having spoiled Erdogan through lavish public praise, despite privately acknowledging his character flaws, U.S. officials must now assume full responsibility for the Prime Minister’s reckless behavior at home and abroad!

Italian beach town bans bikinis with fines of up to €500 for those who dare to bare

Italian beachA seaside town in southern Italy has astonished locals and holiday-makers by instituting a ban on bikinis.

The coastal town of Vietri Sul Mare on the AmalfiCoast has barred anyone from showing too much flesh outside of the beach.

Holiday makers walking around town in skimpy swimwear or bare-chested will now face a steep fine.

The restrictions against bikinis and bare chests was first brought in in 2010. However, the town’s mayor Franco Benincasa has now decided to enforce hefty fines in order to better protect the town’s ‘image’.

Offenders who are caught flaunting bare skin on streets, in public areas and, most of all on the marina of the upmarket seaside town, will face a fine of up to €500.

Vietri Sul Mare’s is not the first town in the area to implement the controversial move. In 2010, another coastal town in the region, Castellammare di Stabia, passed a similar ban, outlawing ‘very skimpy clothes’, alongside blasphemy and football kickabouts.

Local police commissioner Vincenzo Alfano said: ‘The ban was created to protect the image and decorum of all the townspeople and all the tourists in the area.

‘Very often we have witnessed indecent and shameful scenes of people entering public places such as bars and restaurants, shirtless or in costume.

‘In our opinion, it is an attitude that must be eliminated.’

‘And now on platform phwoar…’ Chinese IT worker unwittingly beams porn onto giant screen at train station

An IT worker has been caught watching porn at work  – after he accidentally screened an X-rated film on to a large train station television he had just fixed.

Hundreds of passengers reportedly stopped to stare at the monitor, outside the Jilin Station in China, as the film played for at least ten minutes.

It is believed the technician had hooked his laptop up to the screen – usually used to show adverts – to fix a fault.

But once the job was completed, he apparently failed to disconnect the two devices.

It seems he then turned his attentions to the X-rated film, unaware that it was also being watched by crowds of passengers and passers by outside the station.

The Sun reports that police have questioned the worker, but as yet have not filed any charges against him.

A film has been uploaded to YouTube which shows crowds of people staring in confusion at the screen.

Kim Kardashian Gives Kanye West a Steve Jobs-Signed Apple Mouse

Who knew Kanye West was so nostalgic for Apple products? Father’s Day seems to have come a bit late for the rapper who tweeted this morning a photo of two Apple Pro computer mice adorned with the autographs of Apple founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak.

“One of the other gifts my girl gave me for fathers day pic.twitter.com/WnlZaMhVtw,” @kanyewesttweeted with the photo attached.

West had a baby daughter named North West with Kim Kardashian last month. It is unclear how much Kardashian, 32, who West recently said was his “true love,” paid for the two individually signed mice, although it is rare to find items that are autographed by both of the founders. Autographed Steve Jobs memorabilia ranges from $200 to 6,000 on eBay.

So what would Kanye, 36, want with two Apple Pro mice from 2000, 11 years before Jobs died at age 56? No, West isn’t likely a fan of the transparent, button-less gadget, but instead is a big admirer of the iconic Apple co-founder Jobs.

World’s biggest building opens in China – and the 19million sq ft complex is so huge it comes with its own artificial sun

The world’s largest building has opened in China capable of fitting 20 Sydney Opera Houses – or three Pentagons – inside.

The New Century Global Center in Chengdu, Sichuan province, is a staggering 19million sq.ft. and contains shopping centres, a Mediterranean village, a water park, an ice-skating rink, and multiple hotels.

However, visitors to the glass panelled building need not worry about the weather as the giant complex will have its own artificial sun.

The building is 500 metres long, 400 metres wide and 100 metres high, reports said.

According to Chinese officials, the New Century Global Center is the largest freestanding building in the world, and took three years to complete.

Chinese guide Liu Xun told AFP He added that the artificial sun built inside the building will provide light and heat 24 hours a day for shoppers exploring the around 400,000 sq. metres of boutiques and stores.

Jenny from the Eastern Bloc: Lopez forced to apologize for singing happy birthday to brutal Turkmen dictator accused of torture

Jennifer Lopez performing in Turkmenistan1Jennifer Lopez was forced to apologize after a concert in Turkmenistan on Satruday night because she sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to the repressive dictator of the country’s brutal oppressive regime.
Lopez reportedly changed into a traditional Turkmen outfit during her show and personally serenaded Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow – whose government is accused of arbitrarily arresting and torturing political dissidents.
Human Rights Watch ranks Turkmenistan as ‘among the most repressive in the world.’ The human rights group says the former Soviet republic imposes ‘draconian restrictions on freedom of expression and association.’
The group also reports that ‘President Berdymukhamedov, his relatives, and associates enjoy unlimited power and total control over all aspects of public life.’
The concert was sponsored by China National Petroleum Corp – a major investor in Turmenistan’s booming gas industry – was meant to celebrate Berdimuhamedo’s 56th birthday.
Lopez released a statement after the concert apologizing for signing for the president and saying she never would have attended to concert if she had known the country’s human rights record.
According to the statement, the birthday song was a last-minute request made by the company to Lopez and she ‘graciously obliged.’

The concert took place in at a $2billion resort and yacht club on the Caspian Sea that Berdimuhamedow had opened just the day before.
The glitzy performance for a rarity to the Muslim-majority country of five million people. In attendance were government ministers, the heads of state-owned companies and foreign dignitaries.

Law Requires Chinese to Visit Their Aging Parents

china. elderly man exercising at a parkNew wording in the law requiring people to visit or keep in touch with their elderly parents or risk being sued came into force Monday, as China faces increasing difficulty in caring for its aging population.

The amended law does little to change the status quo, however, because elderly parents in China already have been suing their adult children for emotional support and the new wording does not specify how often people must visit or clarify penalties for those who do not.

It is primarily aimed at raising awareness of the issue, said one of the drafters, Xiao Jinming, a law professor at Shandong University. “It is mainly to stress the right of elderly people to ask for emotional support … we want to emphasize there is such a need,” he said.

China’s legislature amended the law in December following frequent reports of elderly parents neglected by their children. It says offspring of parents older than 60 should see that their daily, financial and spiritual needs are met.

The number of Chinese seniors is expected to skyrocket from the current 185 million to 487 million, or 35 percent of the population, by 2053, according to figures from the China National Committee On Aging.

The expanding ratio is due both an increase in life expectancy — from 41 to 73 over five decades — and by family planning policies that limit most urban families to a single child.
