France’s government resigns en masse (but Hollande’s clinging on): Failing socialist policies blamed for elections rout

օլանդ

France’s socialist prime minister resigned along with his entire government yesterday following a meltdown in local elections.
And last night socialist President Francois Hollande – whose rule has become synonymous with a 75 per cent top rate of income tax – admitted to mistakes and said his priority was now to cut taxes.

The government’s resignation is a huge blow to the president, who was elected to a five-year term in 2012 but whose first two years in power have seen him become the most unpopular head of state in recent history.

In a TV address to the nation last night President Hollande spoke of a ‘moral crisis’, adding: ‘It’s legitimate after what happened to change things.’

He said boosting the economy was now the priority and added: ‘It is essential for our country to produce more, to produce better, to produce French.’

He also pledged to lower taxes and said France would have to persuade EU partners to take into account its efforts to boost the economy when examining its commitments to Brussels.

Mr Hollande also confirmed a plan to cut 50billion euros in government spending.

Mr Hollande replaced Mr Ayrault with Manuel Valls, the tough-talking interior minister – the French version of home secretary – who is fiercely anti-immigration.

Hollande: French First Lady on the Mend, Resting

Francois Hollande - Valerie Trierweiler

France’s  President Francois Hollande says his first lady is recovering at a state residence at Versailles after being hospitalized over a report that he is having an affair with an actress.

The story has drawn widespread attention abroad, and overshadowed Monday’s visit to the Netherlands, his first foreign trip since the report.

Hollande told reporters that Valerie Trierweiler is “doing better” but refused to respond to a question from The Associated Press on his personal life. Trierweiler was hospitalized with what aides called extreme shock after the report earlier this month.

Hollande has never married, and the reported affair with actress Julie Gayet has prompted questions about whether Trierweiler will stay in the state-financed office of first lady. Neither Hollande nor Gayet has denied the affair.

The stench of scandal: Activist unloads tonnes of horse manure in front of France’s parliament building in protest at Hollande

President Hollande

For Francois Hollande, it would be fair to say the proverbial has hit the fan this week.

As if allegations the French president had a secret affair with an actress were not enough, several tonnes of horse manure have been dumped at the steps of his nation’s parliament.

Gendarmes apprehended a protestor before he could finish unloading a white articulated lorry full of dung outside Paris’s National Assembly today, witnesses said.

On the side of the truck was daubed a slogan: ‘Out with Hollande and the entire political class. Long live the SixthRepublic.’

The present-day FifthRepublic was founded in 1958 with Charles de Gaulle its first president after France lost much of its colonial power after the Second World War.

The pungent demonstration happened today outside the Bourbon Palace, a 16th Century monument next to the river Seine in central Paris which houses France’s lower house of parliament, the equivalent of the House of Commons.

Witnesses said the man was apprehended by police, who have since begun a mass clean-up.

The French magazine Closer published a seven-page report last Friday on Mr Hollande’s alleged affair with the actress Julie Gayet.
