Libya Considers Calling for International Troops

Libya’s interim government says it is considering requesting the international community to send troops to the country after three days of fighting destroyed large parts of the capital’s airport.

In a statement posted on its official website early Tuesday, the government also urged all rival parties to cease hostilities, saying commanders who violate its orders would face charges of “crimes against humanity.” It added that a national committee would supervise the withdrawal of militias from the airport area to outside the city.

The government also said that 90 percent of the aircraft at the airport were hit in the shelling, while several buildings, including the customs house, were completely destroyed.

The fighting was some of the most intense seen in Tripoli since longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi was toppled in 2011.

Libya to Try Gadhafi’s Son Next Month

gadhafi-sonLibya’s prosecutor general says late dictator Moammar Gadhafi’s son and his spy chief have been charged with murder in relation to Libya’s 2011 civil war.

Abdel-Qader Radwan said Tuesday that the trial will start on Sept. 19 in the capital on alleged crimes committed during Gadhafi’s 42-year rule and during the eight-month civil war that deposed him. The defendants are former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi and Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, the only son of the former dictator who is in custody.

A militia is holding Seif al-Islam in the Libyan town of Zintan. International Criminal Court judges had ruled that Libya cannot give Seif al-Islam a fair trial and asked authorities to hand him over to The Hague.

Car bomb explodes outside French embassy in Libya leaving two guards seriously injured

f2France’s embassy in Tripoli has been hit by what appeared to be a car bomb this morning, injuring two guards.

It is the first such attack in the Libyan capital since the 2011 war that ousted former dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

‘There was an attack on the embassy. We think it was a booby-trapped car,’ said an embassy official.

‘There was a lot of damage and there are two guards wounded.’
The attack on the fortified complex in Tripoli comes just over two years to the day since former president Nicolas Sarkozy ordered his airforce to start attacking Gaddafi’s forces as part of the liberation of the North African country.

The guards, both of whom were French nationals, were badly hurt, with one said to be in a life-threatening condition, said the source

Diplomatic missions have been targeted in Libya, most notably an attack on the US mission in the eastern city of Benghazi last September that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.
