Au revoir! Istanbul and Rome knock Paris and New York off top spots of 10 best destinations in the world (and London scoops third place)

Փարիզ

Paris has been knocked off the number one spot of the world’s top destination – with Istanbul now firmly in first place.

Despite announcing record tourist figures for 2013, the French capital lost out to Turkey, dropping to seventh in this year’s Travellers’ Choice Destinations awards, voted for by millions of holidaymakers.

A newcomer to the top 10, Istanbul swooped in to the number one position, just ahead of Rome, which itself rose two places from fourth last year.

New York was gazumped by Rome from second place, falling out of the top 10 of the TripAdvisor list to number 12, figures released today show.

However, London managed to retain the same position as last year, holding fast to its title as the third best destination in the world.

This year’s fourth place in the world’s top destinations awards went to China’s Beijing, followed by the Czech Republic’s Prague to make up the top five.

Rome Mayor: Cash-Short City Risks Shut Down Soon

հռոմ

Rome’s mayor says the Italian capital next week risks a shutdown of mass transit, trash collection and other city services unless Parliament quickly frees up funds.

Mayor Ignazio Marino stressed on Thursday he’s not seeking a bailout. The 320 million euros ($440 million) blocked in Parliament are Roman taxpayer money that the national government was supposed to give back to the city by Feb. 28.

But Parliament is suffering gridlock as opposition lawmakers use stalling tactics to protest that Italy last week got another premier who wasn’t elected.

Romans are caught in the middle. Marino says if the funds don’t arrive, city buses won’t have fuel, trash collection will halt, day-care and other public services will close.

Dogs Sniff for Late Pope’s Stolen Blood

Հովհաննես Պողոս II

Dozens of police with sniffer dogs searched the area around the church of San Pietro della Ienca in the central mountainous Abbruzzo region of Italy for a stolen relic containing a fragment of cloth stained with the blood of the late Pope John Paul II.

The relic is believed to have been stolen Saturday night from the small stone church together with a small simple cross, according to police.

The small church is in the Gran Sasso mountains near the city of l’Aquila was dear to Pope John Paul II, who visited the area more than 100 times during his papacy, where he would walk and meditate and was even known to have skied down the slopes as a young pope. The area has become a place of pilgrimage for people in search of peace or wishing to pray.

The relic is a small piece of cloth soaked in blood the pope lost during the 1980 attempt on his life in St. Peter’s Square and is only one of three of its kind. This one was given to the people of L’Aquila in 2011, after the devastating earthquake that struck the area, by the pope’s personal secretary, now cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz.

Objects like this relic, with a special symbolic value, are particularly sought after by the flourishing trade in religious objects.

A criminal investigation has been opened by the local prosecutor’s office.

The Vatican has announced that Pope John Paul II will be made a saint on April 27, along with Pope John XXIII, and Rome is planning for millions of faithful to come for the ceremony.
