Spain’s new king and queen met with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Monday on their first foreign trip as monarchs, and invited the pontiff to visit Spain.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, wearing white as is standard protocol for a queen visiting the pope, were greeted by Francis in the papal library. They chatted for about 40 minutes in private. As they left, Felipe invited Francis to visit and bent down to kiss the pope’s ring, while Letizia curtsied.

In a statement, the Vatican noted that it was the monarchs’ first foreign visit and said the cordial talks focused on church-state cooperation in Spain and unspecified global conflicts.

Francis had met Felipe’s parents, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, on several occasions, the last time during the April 27 canonizations of Saints John Paul II and John XXIII.

Juan Carlos abdicated earlier this month.

Michael Schumacher is SUED for ‘causing motorbike crash’ in Spain before his ski accident – despite still being in a coma

Միխայիլ Շումախեր

A Spanish biker has filed a formal complaint over a traffic accident involving Michael Schumacher weeks before the F1 star’s horror ski crash.

Schumacher is accused of knocking the motorcyclist off his bike after failing to give way at a roundabout in Bormujos near Seville.

The unnamed Spaniard is claiming compensation for the broken wrist he suffered and damage to a watch, his clothes and his motorbike in the accident on November 17 last year.

A trial will only take place if insurers contest the claim and the 45-year-old German would not be obliged to attend.

Police have said in their accident report the seven-time F1 champion, who was on a private visit to Spain, failed to respect his alleged victim’s right of way.

Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm has said Michael is making progress.

Spain to Present New Restrictive Abortion Law

Մարիանո Ռախոյ

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says his government is about to approve an abortion law that rolls back current legislation permitting the procedure without restrictions until the 14th week. The proposal limits pregnancy terminations to exceptional circumstances, such as when the mother or fetus is in danger.

Rajoy said in Brussels on Friday the reform was an electoral promise and that it would essentially restore abortion limits that were in place in 1985.

The bill being considered at a Cabinet meeting was expected to once again allow abortion only in the case of rape or when there is a health risk. Certain fetal deformities may also be accepted as justification.

The bill has been opposed by most opposition parties and women’s groups across the country.

Spain Fines Google $1.2 Million Over Privacy Laws

Google-Corp

Spain’s data protection agency says it has fined search engine giant Google 900,000 euros ($1.2 million) for three serious breaches of the country’s laws.

The agency says in a statement that it was imposing a fine of 300,000 euros for each breach, and requesting that Google comply with the law without delay.

Thursday’s statement says Google collects and processes personal information illegally, that it combines personal information for purposes that are “not determined clearly” and that personal data is stored and maintained “for indeterminate periods of time.”

Data watchdogs in France, Britain, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain have said Google needs to provide additional guarantees to comply with national privacy protection rules in each of those countries.

Marisa Toro, Google’s spokesperson in Spain, said the company was studying the statement.

Իսպանիա,տուգանքներ

The Spanish government has approved draft legislation that sets fines of up to 30,000 euros ($40,800) for offenses such as burning the national flag, insulting the state or causing serious disturbances outside Parliament. The draft Citizen Security Bill presented Friday by Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diez has been heavily criticized by opposition parties, judicial and social groups as an attempt by the conservative government to muzzle protests against its handling of the severe economic crisis. The measures, an update of a 1992 law, also include fines of up to 1,000 euros for insulting or threatening police officers during demonstrations. Similar fines are planned for disseminating photographs of police officers that endanger them or police operations. The bill must be approved by Parliament, where the ruling party has an absolute majority.
