Chinese waterway becomes so polluted it bursts into flame after lit cigarette is thrown into it

River of fire:

A river in eastern China caught fire after years of pollution from factories upstream had turned it flammable.

The river had become so contaminated that it was set alight by a lit cigarette being thrown into the water.

The flames shot up more than 16ft into the air and had to be extinguished by firemen in the city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang province.

Local residents said that the river has been heavily polluted for years, as a result of oils and chemicals being released into the water by several shoe-making factories and packaging firms further upstream.
Despite this being common knowledge in the area, they say that the council’s environmental protection office have refused to take action against the polluting companies, as they are too important to the local economy.

The fire also caught several cars that had been parked next to the pavement alongside the river, destroying them in the process.

Fireman had to use special foam fire extinguishers to put out the fire on the river’s surface. Police are now investigating where the chemicals might have come from.

Scientists dig up giant virus more than 30,000 years old in Siberia

Scientists have unearthed a giant virus more than 30,000 years old from the frozen soil in a remote region of Siberia.

While this ancient virus is harmless to people, the scientists behind the discovery warn that the discovery suggests that the thawing of permafrost in polar regions, as a result of either climate change or mining, could bring threats to human health.

The ancient virus, named Pithovirus sibericum, infects amoebas, not humans or animals.

It survived in the Siberian ice from a period when woolly mammoths and saber-tooth cats roamed the earth.

Its discovery was reported by the researchers, from French and Russian institutions, in an article published this week by the U.S. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Crimea Sets Referendum on Whether to Join Russia

crimea-referendumLawmakers in the embattled Crimean region of Ukraine have decided to hold a referendum March 16 on whether Crimea should become part of Russia.

“This is our response to the disorder and lawlessness in Kiev,” Sergei Shuvainikov, a member of the local Crimean legislature, said Thursday. “We will decide our future ourselves.”

The parliament in Crimea, which enjoys a degree of autonomy under current Ukrainian law, voted 78 with eight abstentions in favor of holding the referendum. Local voters will also be given the choice of deciding to remain part of Ukraine, but with enhanced local powers.

There was no immediate response from the Ukrainian central government to the vote. On Wednesday, Ukraine’s prime minister told The Associated Press that Crimea would remain part of Ukraine.

Let’s hope it doesn’t melt overnight! Farmer spends two months building 50-foot snowman complete with TREES for arms and a trash barrel for a nose

15մ բարձրությամբ ձնեմարդ

A Minnesota farmer turned the snow that was ruining his greenhouses this winter into a spectacular 50-foot snowman that is now attracting national media attention and visitors from miles around.

Greg Novak knew he had to clean up the nuisance snow, but he also thought it would be a great way to perk up his Gilman community deep in the winter doldrums.

Hundreds of hours and about five weeks later, people began flocking to Novak’s farm as news of his impressive creation filled up newsfeeds, inboxes and social media across the web.

Friends and family pitched in to help with Granddaddy, or to do farm chores while Novak worked on building the snowman using a skid loaders to pile snow and a silage blower to direct snow into stacked cylinders, the St. Cloud Times reported.

Apple iPhones have the reputation for being fragile at the best of times, but a jeweller has created a model so expensive its unlikely its owner will want to take it out of the box.

The handset, built by London-based jewellery firm Alchemist, is the world’s most expensive iPhone with a £600,000 ($1 million) price tag.

Dubbed Million Dollar iPhone, the handset has a handmade, 24-carat gold bezel and is covered in 700 individual diamonds, totalling over seven carats.

The company said it set out to create an item that was so luxurious it would ‘redefine the meaning of grandeur’ and spent seven months making the bespoke device.

The navigation button is also made from 24-carat gold and has a two carat diamond cut into the centre.

Only two of the handsets will be sold, with prospective buyers being asked to formally register their interest on either of the company’s two websites, the-million-dollar-iphone.com and gold-alchemist.com.

New York Times corrects article about ’12 Years a Slave’ — 161 years later

12 Years a Slave

It’s a correction more than 160 years in the making.

In its Tuesday edition, The New York Times published a correction for an article that ran on January 20, 1853.

The newspaper has Hollywood and Twitter to thank for bringing the error to light.

The Times explained that the article in question told the story of Solomon Northup, a free African-American man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery.

Northup’s memoir, “12 Years a Slave,” was turned into a movie that won the best picture Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards on Sunday.

The problem was that the 1853 article spelled Northup’s name wrong, in two different ways. It appeared as Northrop in the body of the article and Northrup in the headline.

As the Oscars focused attention on “12 Years a Slave,” a Twitter user unearthed the old article from The Times archives, and it spread quickly on social media.

“The errors came to light on Monday after a Twitter user pointed out the article in The Times archives,” the correction said.

Great Scrawl of China! Special section of ancient wall to be set aside to allow tourists to write graffiti on it

A section of the Great Wall of China has been set aside for graffiti in a bid to save other parts being vandalised by tourists.

Authorities chose a popular stretch of the ancient monument where visitors can scrawl their names in the hope it will stop the spread of graffiti.

A spot on the Mutianyu section in Huairou County, about 43 miles north-east of Beijing, was chosen. It is one of the most popular tourist spots along the wall.

The graffiti section will be set up at one of the fighting towers that has become a common place there for tourists to scrawl on the walls.

It attracts millions of tourists per year, 40 per cent of whom are estimated to be foreigners, which explains why most of the graffiti is in English.

OSCE Sending Military Observer Mission to Ukraine

զինվոր

A U.S. official says the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe will send a military observer mission to Ukraine at its request.

Daniel Baer, the chief U.S. representative to the OSCE, said 15 of its nations, including the United States, decided in Vienna on Tuesday to volunteer members for the mission, which Ukraine had asked for. He said it will head to Ukraine as early as Wednesday, with the goal of then traveling to Crimea.

On Saturday, heavily armed pro-Russian forces took over the strategic peninsula in Ukraine, surrounding its ferry, military bases and border posts. Two Ukrainian warships remained anchored in the Crimean port of Sevastopol, blocked from leaving by Russian ships.

The U.S. is preparing economic sanctions against Russia amid worries that Moscow is ready to stretch its military reach further into the mainland of the former Soviet republic.

The OSCE includes Russia, the United States, and all European countries.

Brazil Has 100 Days to Get Ready for World Cup

աշխարհի գավաթ

Brazil is running out of time.

World Cup organizers will mark 100 days to go on Tuesday with work still to be done on stadiums and infrastructure in the 12 host cities.

As national teams enter their final phase of preparations — Wednesday in the only date this year before mid-May that all players are available to national teams — the Brazilian government is trying to ensure the country will be prepared for the 32-nation tournament, which opens June 12.

There are four stadiums still under construction, and work outside many of the venues is far from over. Doubts also remain about whether host cities will be able to meet FIFA’s requirements for fan areas with outdoor viewing screens.

At ICJ, Croatia Accuses Serbia of Genocide

Croatia is accusing its Balkan neighbor Serbia of genocide during fighting in the early 1990s as the former Yugoslavia shattered in spasms of ethnic violence, in a case at the United Nations’ highest court that highlights lingering animosity in the region.

Croatia is asking the International Court of Justice to declare that Serbia breached the 1948 Genocide Convention when forces from the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia attempted to drive Croats out of large swaths of the country after Zagreb declared independence in 1991.

It is not the first time Serbia has faced allegations of genocide at the world court. In a landmark 2007 judgment, the court cleared Belgrade of committing genocide in the 1995 massacre of some 8,000 Muslim men in the Bosnian enclave of Srebrenica.

President Barack Obama and Joe Biden are keeping in shape – and trying to stay out of trouble with their wives.

Successful launch for rain-tracking satellite

A Japanese rocket roared into orbit early Friday (Thursday afternoon ET) carrying what NASA calls its most precise instrument yet for measuring rain and snowfall.

The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite is the first of five earth science launches NASA has planned for 2014. The 4-ton spacecraft is the most sophisticated platform yet for measuring rainfall, capable of recording amounts as small as a hundredth of an inch an hour, said Gail Skofronick Jackson, GPM’s deputy project scientist.

The $900 million satellite is a joint project with the Japanese space agency JAXA, and it lifted off from Tanegashima Space Center at 3:37 a.m. Friday (1:37 p.m. Thursday ET). In a little over a half hour, it had reached orbit, deployed its solar panels and began beaming signals back to its controllers, NASA said.

That data will boost not only immediate storm forecasts, but also aid climate scientists who have been working on long-term models of a changing world.

The craft has enough fuel for at least five years and is expected to last longer — so when combined with earlier missions, it will give NASA an unbroken 25- to 30-year rainfall record, Jackson said.

The Israeli embassy and Jewish community in Japan are donating 300 Anne Frank-related books to public libraries in Tokyo after hundreds of copies of the girl’s diary and other publications about the Holocaust were vandalized across the city.

Damage to at least 308 books has been discovered at 38 libraries since January, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government.

Most of them were versions of “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.” The book, which has been read by millions of people around the world, is a Jewish girl’s account of hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam during World War II.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Police forced to break up huge crowd of furious jobseekers after Stockholm employment agency invites 61,000 people to recruitment meeting by mistake

ստոկհոլմ

Police were forced to break up a baying mob of jobseekers outside an employment office in Sweden after it accidentally invited 61,000 people to a recruitment meeting.

The e-mail call for the meeting should have gone out to about 1,000 jobseekers but instead went to all unemployed people registered in Stockholm, police said.

Hundreds of people expecting to attend crowded into the alley where the labour office is located and spilled into the adjacent street, a main thoroughfare running through downtown Stockholm.

Emotions were running high and office staff sounded the alarm, bringing police to the scene.

Clas Olsson, acting director of the employment office, told the Aftonbladet newspaper he did not know if the cause was a human or technical error.

Sweden’s total unemployment stood at 8.6 per cent in January.

Rome Mayor: Cash-Short City Risks Shut Down Soon

հռոմ

Rome’s mayor says the Italian capital next week risks a shutdown of mass transit, trash collection and other city services unless Parliament quickly frees up funds.

Mayor Ignazio Marino stressed on Thursday he’s not seeking a bailout. The 320 million euros ($440 million) blocked in Parliament are Roman taxpayer money that the national government was supposed to give back to the city by Feb. 28.

But Parliament is suffering gridlock as opposition lawmakers use stalling tactics to protest that Italy last week got another premier who wasn’t elected.

Romans are caught in the middle. Marino says if the funds don’t arrive, city buses won’t have fuel, trash collection will halt, day-care and other public services will close.
