Snow plows rolled out in JULY after crazy summer storm in New Mexico dumps more than a foot of hail

new mexico hail3Don’t put away those snow plows just yet!

A mid-summer thunderstorm dumped more than a foot of hail in the town of Santa Rosa, New Mexico.

It meant the fire department had to bring out snow plows to clear streets that were clogged with ice from hail drifts.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, golf ball-sized hail pelted the city.

The storm caused severe damage to many homes, cars and businesses.

However, although the weather is certainly unseasonal for July, it’s not uncommon in the High Plains of New Mexico.

In part, this is due to the higher elevation. Santa Rosa sits at 4,616 feet above sea level.

Large hail falls on average at least three days a year.

At least nine dead in Indian hotel collapse

india-collapse-story-topAt least nine people were killed and 15 others injured when a hotel building collapsed in southern India Monday, police said.

The three-storey building was located in Secunderabad, a city in Andhra Pradesh state, senior police official Anjani Kumar told CNN.

Rescue operations are ongoing at the scene, he said. The cause of the collapse would be investigated once the rescue phase was over, he added.

According to Municipal Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu, 19 people have so far been pulled from under the rubble.

At least two people were still believed to be trapped, he said. “We are trying to pull them out.”

Indonesians trapped in tree for five days by hungry tigers that ate one of their friends are rescued by holy man using special chant

Sumatran tigerFive men who have been clinging to the branches of a tree for four days as snarling tigers prowled beneath them might have to remain there until the middle of this week, rescuers said last night.

The Sumatran tigers killed a sixth member of the party and ate half of his remains before chasing his companions who clambered up the tree – hoping the tigers would not follow.

The tigers had hunted down the group after they unwittingly killed a tiger cub, which fell into a trap they had set to catch a deer for food.

Finding the cub dying from its injuries, the pack of tigers gave chase after the men and caught one, named only as David. He was quickly torn apart and half his body consumed.

The men, from Simpang Kiri village in Aceh, northern Sumatra, had gone into the dense forest in search of agar wood, which is very rare, expensive and used in the production of incense and aromatic oils.

Just 1lb of agar wood can fetch up to £175, resulting in villagers risking their lives to enter the jungles of the Gunung Leuser National Park where tigers and dangerous elephants roam.

‘We can’t go rushing in to rescue the men in the tree because of the remoteness and because of the tigers still being there at the base of the tree,’ said Police Chief Dicky Sondani.

Resident of Simpang Kiri village learned of the men’s fate because not only were they carrying mobile phones, they had also managed to get a signal, enabling them to call for help.

But as rescuers from the village neared the tree they saw David’s partially eaten remains and four large tigers – and fled.

That left the men in the tree stranded and by today they had managed to cling on in the branches for four days.

But police said they had little choice but to plan the rescue carefully and that would take some time. The tigers would have to be shot with anaesthetising darts due to their endangered numbers.

More than 100 Sumatran tigers are believed to roam the forests of the Gunung Leuser National Park.

But there are fears their numbers will dramatically drop as the rainforest shrinks and palm oil plantations take their place. Looking for food, tigers are more frequently entering villages and there have been a number of attacks on humans.

Justin Timberlake Nudity-Heavy Video Remains on YouTube

HT_Justin_Timberlake_music_video_Justin Timberlake’s music videos have always been a bit racy (see “Senorita,” “Love Sex Magic” and “Sexy Back”), but his newest video for “Tunnel Vision” sets a new bar. Though news sites reported that the video full of topless women was pulled from YouTube, it will remain up on the service, ABC News has confirmed.

Before the video plays on Justin Timberlake’s VEVO channel, YouTube users are presented with a explicit content warning that they must click on before playing the video.

While Google does not usually allow nudity in videos, a Google spokesperson told ABC News that the video is an exception.

“While our Guidelines generally prohibit nudity, we make exceptions when it is presented in an educational, documentary or artistic context, and take care to add appropriate warnings and age-restrictions,” a Google spokesperson told ABC News on Friday morning.

Google pulled Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” video in March because of female nudity. Google would not comment further on why the exception was made for the “Tunnel Vision” video.

Timberlake’s video premiered on July 2 on the artist’s MySpace page. The artist and actor is one of the co-owners of the recently revamped social network, which focuses on connecting musicians with fans. It was put up on YouTube and Timberlake’s official website on July 3. As of publishing this article, the racy video had over 1.1 million views on YouTube.

Train in Central Pakistan Hits Rickshaw, Kills 12

pakistan. trainA police officer says a train traveling through central Pakistan hit an overloaded rickshaw at an unmanned railway crossing, killing 12 people.

Senior police officer Himayun Tarar said the crash Saturday happened near Khanpur village in Shaikhupura district of Punjab province. Tarar said the rickshaw driver didn’t notice the train and tried to cross the tracks.

Tarar said two women and two children were among the dead, while two others who survived the collision were in critical condition at a local hospital. The officer said many of the victims died before rescue workers reached the crash.

Such crashes routinely occur in Pakistan, as the country has hundreds of unmanned rail crossings and motorists driving overloaded vehicles routinely speed through without looking for oncoming trains.

Venezuela and Nicaragua offer NSA whistle blower Edward Snowden asylum

Edward Snowden (1)Presidents Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua and Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela said Friday they were willing to grant asylum to National Security Agency intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.

Snowden has asked for asylum in several countries, including Nicaragua and Venezuela.

Whereas Ortega cautiously stated his offer, Maduro spoke out against the United States and championed Snowden for telling the truth about the government’s global spying programs.
He made the offer during a speech marking the anniversary of Venezuela’s independence. It was not immediately clear if there were any conditions to Venezuela’s offer.

‘In the name of America’s dignity … I have decided to offer humanitarian asylum to Edward Snowden,’ Maduro proclaimed during a military parade marking the country’s Independence Day, Reuters reported.

‘He is a young man who has told the truth, in the spirit of rebellion, about the United States spying on the whole world,’ Maduro said.

In Nicaragua, Ortega said he was willing to make the same offer ‘if circumstances allow it.’ Ortega didn’t say what the right circumstances would be when he spoke during a speech in Managua.

He said the Nicaraguan embassy in Moscow received Snowden’s application for asylum and that it is studying the request.

Snowden is currently believed to be holed up in the transit area of Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, according to the news agency.

Russian officials have neither confirmed nor denied his presence there, though they have announced that the transit area is neutral territory. Snowden will only have crossed over on to Russian soil if he passes through the airports customs.

Even if Snowden was to accept the Latin or South American government’s offers it remains unclear how he will get into the countries.

As Reuters noted, the are no direct commercial flights between Moscow and Venezuela. The most common route involves transferring in Havana and there is no word yet if the Cuban government will let Snowden pass.

Snowden’s journey could prove challenging as the United States has made it clear they are monitoring the skies for his presence.

It’s fizz, but not as you know it: French wine firm horrifies wine snobs by creating world’s first bottle of red flavoured with COLA

Rouge Sucette, red wine with cola flavorA French drinks company is launching a red wine that will have the edge on its competitors – by adding a dash of cola.

In a break with tradition Rouge Sucette, French for red lollipop, is made from 75 per cent grapes with the remainder from water, sugar and cola flavouring.

Sure to horrify connoisseurs, it is designed to appeal to the younger ‘Coke generation’.

Winemakers fear that young people who drink endless spirits and mixers but are not so keen on wine will be difficult to attract if they do not adapt to their palette.

The 9 per cent ABV blend is part of a new range by Aquitaine-based firm Haussmann Famille.

The company recommends serving it ice-cold for the summer weather.

It went on sale this week for 2.95 euros a bottle and is hoped to become a feature of French barbeques and summer drinks parties.

Pauline Lacombe, Marketing Director of Haussmann Famille, said: ‘The result is surprising; the balance between the bitterness of the wine and the sweetness of the cola is perfect.’

‘This kind of product is more dedicated to young adults, and women.

‘We have worked closely with a lab in Bordeaux, specialised in aroma.’

Spain ‘was told’ that Edward Snowden was aboard grounded Bolivian presidential plane

Edward SnowdenEuropean countries were told that NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden was aboard the plane of Bolivian president Evo Morales which was diverted to Austria, Spain claims.

According to Spain’s foreign minister the information was ‘clear’ that Snowden was inside the plane, which was grounded and searched last week.

Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo did not reveal who supplied the information, but said the decision to force the Bolivian presidential plane to make a u-turn over Europe was based on the information.

Meanwhile, Bolivian President Evo Morales is threatening to close the US embassy in La Paz after the incident.

Mr Morales has since blamed the US government for pressurising the European countries into the ban, which has caused a diplomatic furore.

Reports claimed Morales’s flight was brought down because there were suggestions that American National Security Agency (NSA) leaker, Edward Snowden, was on board, after the Bolivian president  said casually in Moscow that if Snowden was to apply for asylum, his case would be considered.

Rock-solid love: Australian woman marries a bridge in France – and even gets the mayor’s blessing

Australian woman marries a bridge in Southern FranceAn Australian woman has taken her desire for the ‘strong and silent’-type to a new extreme when she married a bridge.

Jodi Rose married Le Pont du Diable Bridge in Céret, southern France after falling head over heels for the ‘sensual’ 14th century stone structure.

Ms Rose, or Mrs Le Pont du Diable, has spent the past decade travelling the world recording the vibrations in bridge cables with contact microphones and using them to create experimental music.

After visiting dozens of bridges all over the world for her Singing Bridges musical project, she decided this was ‘The One’.

Although her new husband may struggle to express his feelings, newlywed Jodi said ‘his being is very present, and I feel at peace in his strong embrace.’

‘He makes me feel connected to the earth and draws me to rest from my endless nomadic wanderings. He is fixed, stable, rooted to the ground, while I am nomadic, transient, ever on the road.

The wedding between Jodi and Le Pont du Diable, which translates to The Devil’s Bridge, took place in front of 14 guests and was blessed by the mayor of neighbouring town Saint-Jean-de-Fos.

The pair made their vows at the groom’s entrance. Rose wore a custom bridal gown and veil, and commissioned rings for both her and the bridge.

Their union is not legally recognised in France, but Rose claims their marriage is as strong as any other.

Ms Rose, who says she is completely devoted to her new husband, have yet to explain how she determined the sex of the bridge.

Earthquake-proof table invented to save the lives of millions of school children worldwide

earthquake proof table (1)Experts once advised people to run for a doorway when the earth begins to shake, now that’s out the window and scientists suggest jumping under the nearest table.

Two Israel scientist have a solution for that: earthquake-proof tables.

Designed to withstand downward impacts of up to one ton, the table is the brainchild of Israeli inventors Arthur Brutter and Ido Bruno.

Brutter and Bruno say the idea came out of the pressing need to protect school children in the developing world at risk of death and injury when earthquakes that strike their structurally unsound schools.

Then Brutter witnessed footage of 2010’s catastrophic Haiti earthquake in which an estimated 200,000 people died as poorly constructed homes and schools easily buckled in the face of the 7.0 magnitude temblor.

‘I looked at pictures of a school that was crushed in the earthquake in Haiti and they really shocked me,’ he said.

The solution is a cheap to make, easy to lift table for school children that can withstand massive impact when used as shelter from earthquake debris.

The tables, when placed in rows like classroom desks, also act as a means of escape.

With debris halted above, students can crawl through the clear passageways created by the tables, as can rescue workers.

First tested by the Israeli military, the desk is now undergoing strict testing at PaduaUniversity’s Structural Engineering department in Italy.

According to Brutter and Bruno, some 300 million school children worldwide are at risk from earthquakes because their buildings aren’t prepared for them. The team sees their earthquake proof table as a way to prevent deaths and injuries.

The two have been applauded around the world for their invention and received numerous awards.

Retired Italian zookeeper, 72, mauled to death by tigers he kept at closed-down zoo as he tried to feed them

italian police in tiger's cage. TurinAn elderly zookeeper was ripped to pieces and eaten by his own tigers when he went to feed them.

Mauro Lagiard, 72, was attacked from behind as he entered the enclosure at a closed-down zoo, near Turin, in northern Italy.

In a horrific scene he was dragged 100ft while his wife watched helplessly from outside the cage.

His dismembered body was later found by the tigers’ water trough, police said.

Mr Lagiard and his wife had cared for the tigers since the small animal sanctuary was closed down in 2010 at the peak of the economic crisis.

The couple lived on site near the tigers’ enclosure in a camper van.

The retired zoo keeper was ‘utterly fearless’ and devoted to the animals according to reports in the Italian media.

After hearing desperate screams his wife Carla called for medics.

But the 73-year-old, who walked with the help of two sticks, was powerless to come to her husband’s aid and could only watch in agony from outside the cage.

The tiger that attacked first was the one he loved the most, according to reports, even though the same animal had attacked him before two years ago causing him to spend eight months in hospital.

But neighbours said the animals were malnourished and aggressive. They were fed just twice a week.

They are currently in the care of vets while their fate is decided. Samir is likely to be put down, according to reports.

Russia’s Putin Signs Law Limiting Adoption by Gays

Vladimir PutinPresident Vladimir Putin has signed a bill that sharply limits the adoption of Russian children by people from countries that allow same-sex marriage.

The new law prohibits adoption by same-sex foreign couples whose homeland recognizes their union as marriage, as well as by single people or unmarried couples from those countries.

A Kremlin statement said the measure is intended to guarantee children a “harmonious” upbringing and protect them from “complexes, emotional suffering and stress.”

The bill signed Wednesday is the latest move by Russia to buck the Western trend toward greater acceptance of homosexuality. On Sunday, Putin approved a ban on giving children any information about gays.

The adoption bill further shrinks the possibilities for 600,000 Russian children without parental custody. Last year, Russia banned all adoptions by Americans.

Married spy couple jailed in Germany after spying for their Russian paymasters for 25 years

A married spy couple have been jailed in Germany after being found guilty of espionage for their Russian paymasters for 25 years.

The couple, codenamed Andreas and Heidrun Anschlag, are said to have settled in former West Germany on false passports a quarter of a century ago.

They began their snooping career in the same city – Dresden – where Russian leader Vladimir Putin was posted for the KGB.

The duo are accused of first feeding information about West Germany to the former Soviet Union, then the reunited land to the Russian Republic.

‘The accused had the task of gathering information about the political and military strategy of the EU and NATO,’ said the prosecutor at their trial, as well as ‘security-relevant political aspects of relations between Germany, the EU and NATO to Russia.’

Investigators said it was due to information gleaned from the interrogations in America that led to the arrests of the spy duo in Germany.

Two Austrian passports, both said to be forgeries made by the counterfeiters of the SVR, were seized when they were taken into custody.

A court in Stuttgart gave Andreas Anschlag six years and six months, and Heidrun five years and six months.

Their daughter was born and raised in Germany and knew nothing of their activities – nor of their true identities before they became spies.

Despite Lavish Public Praise, U.S. is Deeply Troubled by Erdogan

Harut SassounianBy Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

Some months ago I wrote a column titled “Obama is Exploiting Turkish Leaders’ Craving for Flattery,” explaining that the U.S. President is able to persuade Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to do his bidding by taking advantage of his weakness for lavish praise!

Those aware of Erdogan’s authoritarian streak — on full display during the recent brutal attacks on protesters in Istanbul and other Turkish cities — have been deeply troubled by U.S. officials’ repeated mischaracterization of the Prime Minister’s dictatorial regime as ‘a role model for the Islamic world.’

The insincerity of such assessments was exposed when WikiLeaks made public thousands of confidential diplomatic cables from the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, indicating that American officials’ real opinion about Erdogan is the exact opposite of what they have been stating in public.

The Embassy dispatches, published by the German magazine Der Spiegel, described the Turkish Prime Minister “as a power-hungry Islamist surrounded by corrupt and incompetent ministers.” In a May 2005 cable, the U.S. Embassy surmised that Erdogan never had a realistic view of the world and believes he was chosen by God to lead Turkey. A knowledgeable source told American officials that “Tayyip believes in God … but does not trust him.”

U.S. diplomats report that the Prime Minister gets almost all his information from Islamist-leaning newspapers, ignoring the input of his own ministers. The Turkish military and intelligence services no longer share with him some of their reports. He trusts no one completely, surrounding himself with “an iron ring of sycophantic (but contemptuous) advisors.” Despite Erdogan’s macho behavior, he is reportedly terrified of losing his grip on power.

Although the Turkish leader declared war on corruption when he first assumed office, informants told U.S. Embassy officials that corruption exists at all levels, even within the Erdogan family. A senior government advisor confidentially told a journalist that the Prime Minister enriched himself from the privatization of a state oil refinery. An Energy Ministry official alleged that Erdogan asked Iranians to sign a gas pipeline deal with a Turkish company owned by an old schoolmate. Furthermore, two American sources claimed that the Prime Minister had eight Swiss bank accounts. Erdogan has denied all such allegations, insisting that his wealth is mostly derived from gifts received at his son’s wedding, and acknowledging that an anonymous Turkish businessman has been paying the expenses of his four children to study in the United States. Such explanations are viewed by the American Embassy as “lame.”

The Embassy’s cables contain many other startling accusations against Erdogan. Informants have told U.S. officials that when his political party’s candidate lost the Trabzon mayoral race, the Prime Minister allegedly funneled millions of dollars from a secret government account to his close friend Faruk Nafiz Ozak whom he had named as head of the local Trabzonspor football club. The money was for hiring top players so that the soccer team’s victories would overshadow the accomplishments of the elected mayor.

According to a cable sent by former U.S. Ambassador Eric Edelman, Erdogan’s appointees lacked “technocratic depth.” While some “appear to be capable of learning on the job, others are incompetent or seem to be pursuing private … interests.” High-ranking Turkish officials have informed the American Embassy in Ankara that they are appalled by the Prime Minister’s staff. Erdogan reportedly appointed as his undersecretary a man exhibiting “incompetence, prejudices and ignorance.” The Women’s Minister Nimet Cubukcu, an advocate of criminalizing adultery, obtained her position because she happened to be a friend of the Prime Minister’s wife. Another minister is accused of “nepotism, links to heroin smuggling, and a predilection for underage girls.”

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, highly-praised by U.S. officials in public, also comes under private scrutiny and criticism. According to confidential American Embassy cables, Davutoglu “understands little about politics outside of Ankara.” In fact, U.S. diplomats are alarmed “by his imperialistic tone … and his neo-Ottoman vision.” In a January 2010 dispatch, the American Ambassador reported that Turkey has “Rolls Royce ambitions but Rover resources.” Former Defense Minister Mehmet Gonul was also critical of the Foreign Minister, warning American officials about his “Islamist influence on Erdogan,” and calling him “exceptionally dangerous.”

Having spoiled Erdogan through lavish public praise, despite privately acknowledging his character flaws, U.S. officials must now assume full responsibility for the Prime Minister’s reckless behavior at home and abroad!

Italian beach town bans bikinis with fines of up to €500 for those who dare to bare

Italian beachA seaside town in southern Italy has astonished locals and holiday-makers by instituting a ban on bikinis.

The coastal town of Vietri Sul Mare on the AmalfiCoast has barred anyone from showing too much flesh outside of the beach.

Holiday makers walking around town in skimpy swimwear or bare-chested will now face a steep fine.

The restrictions against bikinis and bare chests was first brought in in 2010. However, the town’s mayor Franco Benincasa has now decided to enforce hefty fines in order to better protect the town’s ‘image’.

Offenders who are caught flaunting bare skin on streets, in public areas and, most of all on the marina of the upmarket seaside town, will face a fine of up to €500.

Vietri Sul Mare’s is not the first town in the area to implement the controversial move. In 2010, another coastal town in the region, Castellammare di Stabia, passed a similar ban, outlawing ‘very skimpy clothes’, alongside blasphemy and football kickabouts.

Local police commissioner Vincenzo Alfano said: ‘The ban was created to protect the image and decorum of all the townspeople and all the tourists in the area.

‘Very often we have witnessed indecent and shameful scenes of people entering public places such as bars and restaurants, shirtless or in costume.

‘In our opinion, it is an attitude that must be eliminated.’
