25 students swept away after Indian dam’s sluices release flood of water downstream without warning

River Beas1

Rescuers searching a Himalayan river for dozens of Indian students, who were swept away when a dam released a rush of water, have retrieved four bodies.

The 25 students from the southern city of Hyderabad had been taking photographs on the banks of the Beas River on Sunday when they were engulfed by the water from the Larji hydropower station near the mountain resort town of Manali in Himachal Pradesh.

They had been on a 10-day field trip with around 48 students, some of whom managed to scramble to safety.

Police in Manali said four bodies were recovered Monday morning after the search resumed at dawn. They said a shortage of boats and divers was hampering the operation.

հնդկաստան, հրմշտոց

A stampede killed at least 18 people in a large crowd gathered to pay last respects to a religious leader on Saturday in India, official news agency Press Trust of India reported.

The pandemonium, which injured 60 more people, started after the gates were closed to the residence of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, who had died the day before at age 102, CNN sister network CNN-IBN reported.

Burhanuddin was the head of a denomination of Islam known as Dawoodi Bohra.

His funeral will continue as scheduled, CNN-IBN reported.

India has seen deadly stampedes at religious events before.

In October at least 115 died, when Hindu pilgrims crossing a bridge to a temple broke into a panic, as a rumor spread that the bridge was about to give way.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to step down after election due in May

 Մանմոհան Սինգխ

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Friday that he will step down after his country’s national elections due in May.

“In a few months’ time, after the general election, I will hand the baton over to a new prime minister,” Singh told a news conference in New Delhi.

The 81-year-old Oxford-educated Singh has been prime minister for India’s governing Congress party since May 2004.

His move to rule himself out of the race for the top job in this year’s general elections didn’t surprise political observers.

His party suffered a bruising defeat in regional elections in December, billed by the country’s news media as an indicator of political trends ahead of the upcoming national vote.

A rash of corruption scandals has also undermined the reputation of Singh’s coalition government over the past few years.

An official says about 25,000 people have been evacuated from coastal villages in southern India as a strong cyclone approaches from the Bay of Bengal.

Andhra Pradesh state Revenue Minister Raghvira Reddy says the cyclone is expected to hit four districts of the state on Friday with wind speeds of up to 110 kilometers per hour (68 miles per hour).

The India Meteorological Department said Thursday a storm surge of about up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) and heavy rainfall were expected to flood low-lying areas.

India to put monkeys on the pill in bid to tackle rising population of marauding macaques

Հնդկաստան,կապիկներ

Indian council chiefs have come up with a novel way of dealing with a scourge of marauding monkeys – putting them on the pill.

New Delhi is currently plagued by thousands of red-bottomed Rhesus Macaques or Bhandar monkeys and their population is rising.

The primates often attack people to steal food, chew through internet cables and roam free through government buildings.

In 2007 Delhi’s deputy mayor SS Bajwa died after falling from his first-floor terrace trying to fight off monkeys.
The city had previously employed monkey catchers who would use larger black-faced Langur monkeys to scare the smaller primates away.

But the practise was banned earlier this year forcing officials to come up with a new solution.

India’s Central Zoo Authority got in touch with the National Primate Centre in California which recommended using oral contraceptives, female sterilisation and vasectomies, officials said.

The oral contraceptives will be put in food and left for the monkeys to find while those that can be caught will be sterilised.

Professor P.C. Tyagi of the Wildlife Institute of India said the plan would only get the go-ahaead when they were sure it would have no harmful effect on the animals or their behaviour.

India plans trip to Mars to show off its ‘technological ability’ as part of its $1billion a year space programme (but country will still receive British aid until 2015)

Հնդկաստան,տիեզերանավ,Մարս

India is making final preparations to send a spacecraft to Mars tomorrow.

The aim is to test India’s space technology to see if it has the technological ability to explore the solar system.

If successful, India will become only the fourth country or group to reach the red planet after Russia, U.S. and Europe.

More than half the world’s attempts to reach Mars – 23 out of 40 missions – have failed, including missions by Japan in 1999 and China in 2011.

Mangalyaan, which means ‘Mars craft’ is scheduled to blast off from the Indian space center on the southeastern island of Shriharikota – the start of a 300-day, 780 million-kilometer (485 million-mile) journey to orbit Mars and survey its geology and atmosphere.

The 1,350-kilogram orbiter is expected to reach its designated orbit September 24 2014.

Mangalyaan is expected to have at least six months to investigate the planet’s landscape and atmosphere.

Lightning strikes killed 32 people, including nine children, during weekend storms in India

կայծակ

Lightning strikes killed 32 people, including nine children, during storms at the weekend in India.

It is not rare for lightning to strike someone when it is monsoon season, but that the sheer number of the death toll is extremely rare.

The strikes killed people in the eastern Indian states of Bihar and Jharkhand.

Torrential rains accompanied by strong winds uprooted trees, damaged houses and brought down power cables across the region on Sunday night.

Villagers housed in bamboo-and-grass huts are generally most at risk.

Horrifying moment small boy on trip to Indian zoo is attacked and seriously hurt by furious monkey

macaque attacked a small boy at an Indian zoo4An irate monkey attacked a small boy during a trip to a zoo while the child’s father and a zookeeper fought to prise them apart.

The boy – named locally as Raghav – was seriously hurt at an animal centre in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, India.

Pictures taken by a bystander show the child pinned to the floor by the primate with blood on his hands and face.

The macaque can be seen clinging to Raghav’s back as his father ran to his rescue.

A zookeeper, alerted by the commotion, armed himself with a yellow stick and attempts to strike the monkey – delivering several blows.

Eventually the boy was separated from the clutches of the monkey, with the primate sprinting off still scowling and baring its teeth.

The boy is said to have received severe injuries, according to local reports – but his current condition is not known.

Large parts of India are plagued by monkeys who steal food, mug people and break into homes.

It has resulted in monkey-catchers being employed to help keep them in check.

india-collapse-story-topAt least nine people were killed and 15 others injured when a hotel building collapsed in southern India Monday, police said.

The three-storey building was located in Secunderabad, a city in Andhra Pradesh state, senior police official Anjani Kumar told CNN.

Rescue operations are ongoing at the scene, he said. The cause of the collapse would be investigated once the rescue phase was over, he added.

According to Municipal Commissioner M.T. Krishna Babu, 19 people have so far been pulled from under the rubble.

At least two people were still believed to be trapped, he said. “We are trying to pull them out.”

Entire villages washed away: At least 23 dead and 50 missing in India as days of torrential rains wreak havoc and leave 10,000 pilgrims stranded on a mountainside

rains in IndiaAt least 23 people have died and 50 more remain missing after torrential downpours in northern India swept away roads, buildings and vehicles.

One building collapse today killed at least three people who were washed away when an entire apartment block toppled into a river, a government spokesman said.

Most of the destruction is concentrated in the state of Uttarakhand, where the Ganges river and its tributaries are flowing at dangerously high levels.

Another landslide triggered by the monsoon rains buried a bus, killing three people in Almora district.

Adding to the crisis, many more people have been left totally stranded in their homes by collapsing roads and bridges.
More than 10,000 pilgrims on a mountain pass leading to a Hindu religious site had to be evacuated by helicopter after roads to the pilgrimage spot were unusable.

In response, army and paramilitary troops are leading efforts to rescue scores of people from the rooftops of their flooded homes.

India’s capital, Delhi, has also been hit by the heavy rains as many roads were flooded after recent blistering summer heat.

Delhi airport was affected after more than four inches of rain fell in five hours on Sunday afternoon. Passengers were seen having to wade knee-deep in water to get to Terminal 3.

Seven dead and six injured after four-storey building collapses in Mumbai’s heavy monsoon rains

mumbai building collapse3At least seven people have been killed after a a four-storey building in Mumbai collapsed in heavy monsoon rains.

Rescuers used sensors and life detectors to search for five other people who were feared trapped in the debris of the building in the Sion area of Mumbai.

Nearby residents said structural alterations made to the ground floor caused the collapse, the Times of India reported.

Building collapses are common in India as builders try to cut corners by using substandard materials, and as multistory structures are built with inadequate supervision.

The massive demand for housing around India’s cities and pervasive corruption often result in builders adding unauthorized floors or putting up illegal buildings.

India unveils vacccine for deadly diarrhoea virus

4Ռոտավիրուսի դեմ ստեղծվել է նոր պատվաստանյութScientists unveiled Tuesday an affordable vaccine against a deadly diarrhoea-causing virus that kills some 100,000 children in India every year.
Rotavirus, which causes dehydration and severe diarrhoea, is globally responsible for some 453,000 deaths annually and is particularly threatening in Africa and Asia, where access to urgent healthcare is often out of reach.
K. Vijaraghavan, secretary of India’s Department of Biotechnology which steered the hunt for an affordable rotavirus vaccine, said it was a product of international cooperation, although it has yet to be approved by New Delhi.
The vaccine named Rotavac will be manufactured by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech pharmaceutical firm which has said it has the capacity to mass produce 60 million doses after clearance is given. Each vaccination consists of three doses.
Rotavirus is blamed for causing up to 884,000 hospitalisations in India a year, at a cost to the country of 3.4 billion rupees ($72 million), scientists say.

India opposition urges PM to quit

6Հնդկաստանի ընդդիմությունը կոչ է անում վարչապետին հրաժարական տալ

India’s opposition demanded Saturday the resignation of Congress Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, raising the stakes after forcing the exit of two cabinet ministers over corruption scandals.
Pressure has been building for months on the premier, who is widely accused of ineffectiveness while overseeing a sharp economic slowdown and turning a blind eye to a slew of graft controversies that have alarmed foreign investors.
“The government is facing serious corruption allegations,” said Rajnath Singh, president of the Hindu nationalist opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“If the prime minister honestly introspects about what should be done to strengthen the faith of the people in the government, he will find he has no other option but to resign,” Rajnath Singh told reporters in New Delhi.

Two dead in India hospital roof collapse

imagesTwo people were killed and 16 injured when the ceiling of a hospital in central India came crashing down, trapping patients and employees under the rubble, officials said.

Rescue workers smashed through giant slabs of concrete and combed through other debris to search for victims after the ceiling of the first floor of the women’s wing of the Kasturba Gandhi Hospital in Bhopal caved in Friday.
“The bodies of two persons were found when the rescue team started removing debris from the collapsed structure,” Nikunj Shrivastava, chief district administrative officer, told reporters at the scene.
He said the casualty toll was not expected to rise and rescue efforts had been completed.
The two-storey hospital, run by state-owned power equipment maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), was undergoing repairs.
