China censors Winnie the Pooh from online searches after photo emerges of president Xi Jinping that makes him look like the children’s favourite

Winni the Pooh and TigerHe is a beloved fictional bear described as having ‘very little brain’ who lives on a diet of honey and is best friends with a piglet.

But when a trivial comparison was made between China’s President Xi Jinping and Winnie the Pooh, the country’s strict censorship laws swung into action.

A picture of Xi Jinping walking with Barack Obama at a California summit was published on the Chinese social media site Weibo.

It was placed next to an illustrated image of Winnie the Pooh and his pal Tigger, who have been drawn in a similar pose to the politicians.

Comments that were posted on the blog were removed and the picture was deleted by website monitors.

Despite being removed form the site, the images went viral, with critics saying over-zealous censors had misread the frivolous comparison.

The Communist Party’s censors are known for interfering with even the most minor of government criticism on social networking sites.

The blogger, called Nicaragua Rabbit posted the two pictures on the Chinese equivalent of Twitter, on Tuesday.

Australia officially recognises third gender of ‘intersex’ on all documents for people who do not feel they are male or female

passportAustralia has announced new guidelines to recognise the gender category ‘intersex’ on official documents.

Under the new system, which will come into effect from July 1, individuals will not be required to have undergone sex reassignment surgery or hormone therapy to select the new category.

Since 2011 Australian nationals who were biologically not entirely male or female, have been able to select ‘X’ as a gender category on their passports.

Transgender people have been able to pick whether they are male or female providing their choice is supported by a doctor.
The changes mean people will now have the option to select M (male), F (female) or X (Indeterminate/Intersex/Unspecified).

According to Australia’s Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus the new guidelines will make it easier for people to establish or change their sex or gender in personal records held by federal government departments and agencies.

If an Australian wants to change the gender entry on their personal record, the government will now accept a statement from their doctor or psychologist, a valid Australian passport or a state or territory birth certificate or other document which shows their preferred status.

Say awwww! The dentist who travels around the world to fix ANIMALS’ teeth… from deadly hippos to an adorable little hedgehog

Steenkamp operating on a bearBeing a dentist is not always an easy job. Performing painful surgery on grumpy patients can test the patience – and nerves – of even the most experienced.

But when that patient is a six-tonne elephant needing root canal or a lion with toothache, it makes the task all the more trickier.

However, for Dr. Gerhard Steenkamp, it is all in a days work. The South African is one of the world’s top vet dentists, operating on some of the wilds most ferocious predators.

Dr Steenkamp’s work has seen him travel to China, Egypt, the UAE, and across Africa – performing around 500 surgeries a year.

The dentist, from Pretoria, said: ‘I’ve been really blessed in my career so far to work on a variety of animals.

‘I’ve operated on everything from a small bat right up to a six tonne elephant.

‘There’s been plenty of carnivores too – lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs.

‘The majority of the big animals like buffalo, hippo, rhino, elephants, they’re just so big and enormous it can be tricky.

‘Their size makes it difficult to work with them, you cannot just quickly move then around or turn them on their other side, it has to be meticulously planned beforehand.’

Dr Steenkamp, a trained dentist and maxillofacial surgeon, performs a host of procedures including root canals, extracting teeth and scaling and polishing teeth.

The most common complaints from his animal patents are fractures of teeth, infections and abscesses.

Too much for the Irish? Rihanna’s topless image is covered up on billboards across Dublin

Rihanna's photo in Dublin4She shocked locals when she stripped off in a field in Northern Ireland to shoot her video We Found Love in 2011, and it seems the people of Ireland still haven’t recovered Rihanna’s raunchy video shoot.

Images of the singer topless have been plastered on billboard around the Irish city to promote her Diamonds world tour stop at the Aviva Stadium on June 21st.

Pictures of the star have been covered up with items of clothing which conceal the singer’s modesty.

Several of the billboards have been covered with dresses stapled across Rihanna’s chest, concealing her the topless photo used to promote her Unapologetic album and Diamonds tour.

Rihanna’s world tour promotional images are not the first time the singer has angered residents of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

In September 2011, Rihanna had been filming the video for her latest single, We Found Love, with Scottish DJ Calvin Harris – which at one point saw the singer go topless – when 61-year-old farmer Alan Graham spotted her stripping down to a bikini made up of red handkerchiefs.

The furious farmer, who asked for filming to be halted, later defended his actions, saying Rihanna’s behaviour was ‘inappropriate’.

Truck Slams Into Mexico Teachers’ Protest, 7 Dead

truckAuthorities in western Mexico say a tanker truck carrying tar has slammed into a highway toll booth that had temporarily been taken over by protesting teachers. They say seven people are dead and another 14 injured.

Most of the dead and injured are believed to be teachers who have been holding a series of protests in the western state of Michoacan.

The teachers are protesting educational reforms that would reduce union power in hiring decisions and establish teacher evaluations.

Protesters in Mexico often seize highway toll booths, and sometimes demand drivers pay a small sum to drive through without paying a toll.

France’s burkha ban sparks violence across Paris after police try to arrest woman for wearing a veil and pregnant woman is attacked for covering her face

riots against the 2011 lawViolent clashes have broken out in a Paris suburb after police tried to arrest a Muslim woman for wearing a veil.

It came as two men today put a 21-year-old pregnant woman in hospital for covering her face with a veil on the same council estate.

Under a law which came into force in 2011, women found guilty of wearing niqabs in public can be fined the equivalent of around £130.
But when officers approached the unnamed woman, passers-by became involved in a ‘riot’ and police used tear gas and flash-ball shots to disperse them, according to a police source.

Two men aged 23 and 37, including a cousin of the young veil-wearer, were arrested and placed in custody under suspicion of violence and public order offences.

Dress to impress: Boyfriend puts on a wedding gown to propose to his girlfriend (and fortunately it didn’t put her off!)

Liu and his girlfriendMost men get a little nervous at the prospect of popping the question.

But while most men are confident that their question and a ring will secure a yes, one man decided to prove to his girlfriend just how serious he was – by wearing a wedding dress.

Besotted Liu, 23, thought his girlfriend Liang Sun wouldn’t take him seriously if he simply popped the question at their university in Chongqing city, southern China.
So he climbed into a wedding dress and hired florists to decorate her student digs with a heart-shaped display of blooms under a banner saying: ‘Bride – I love you.’

‘I wore it because I wanted to tell her that one day I want to see her in this dress beside me,’ explained Liu.

And it would appear his hard work paid off – Liang immediately agreed to the unusual proposal.

The process of engagement and marriage in China is steeped in traditions.

There are three parts of a Chinese marriage – the legal part, the ceremony, and the party.

A Chinese marriage that does not observe proper Chinese customs is invalid in the eyes of most Chinese society.

Chinese farmer who claimed he had electrocuted an alien and kept it in his freezer is JAILED for lying

Li posing with alienA Chinese farmer who posted photographs of him posing with an ‘alien’ that he claimed to have electrocuted after its UFO crash-landed on his farm has been jailed for ‘disrupting social order’.

The pictures of Mr Li standing next to a crude looking extraterrestrial made from rubber sparked a frenzy of speculation on social networking sites across China.

Mr Li had claimed he saw a formation of UFOs buzzing across the night sky along the Yellow River in Binzhou Shangdong province.

But he has been forced to admit he made the whole thing up following five days in prison after police arrested him.

But he refused to admit the rubber doll was a fake – claiming he bought the ‘body’ from a villager and decided to keep it in his freezer.

However, when police discovered files on his computer that provided further evidence of the deception, Mr Li finally confessed.

Police issued a statement saying the rather unconvincing figure at the bottom of a chest freezer was, in fact, not another life form but high quality rubber.

You’re the best! Bill Clinton gets a hug from proud daughter Chelsea as he accepts Father of the Year award

Բիլ Քլինթոնը և Չելսին!Bill Clinton grinned with pride on Tuesday as he accepted an award for Father of the Year, presented by his beaming daughter Chelsea.

The former president looked delighted as his 33-year-old daughter awarded him the statue and hugged him tightly at a New York luncheon to benefit charity Save The Children.

And to top off the achievement, Clinton announced that he even had a text from wife Hillary, which read: ‘Congratulations. I think you deserve this.’

Chelsea, 33, lavished praise on her 66-year-old father, saying that he had ‘set the bar high’ for her husband Marc Mezvinsky whom she married in August 2010.

The former President also gushed about his daughter, now a special correspondent for NBC, saying that she ‘still makes me happier than anything else in the world’.

Hillary Clinton did not attend the event at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York. The National Father’s Day Council cited Clinton’s philanthropy work through the William J. Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative, both started after he left the White House in 2001.

Australian woman, 29, tries to become first person to complete 103 mile Florida to Cuba swim WITHOUT a shark cage

Chloe McCardel2An Australian woman is attempting to become the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage.

Chloe McCardel, 29, is setting off on the 103-mile (166-km) swim today.

The treacherous body of water known as the Florida Straits is the Holy Grail for marathon swimmers and has been conquered only once, by Susie Maroney, also Australian, who used a protective cage at age 22 during her 1997 swim that glided on ocean currents and enabled her to make the journey in just 25 hours.

Since 2011, four unsuccessful, uncaged swims have been attempted, three by American Diana Nyad and one by Australian Penny Palfrey, and in all, 20 people have tried and failed, McCardel said in a press conference on Tuesday at the Hemingway Marina west of Havana.

‘It’s the hardest marathon swim in the entire world,’ the blond, well-tanned 28-year-old told reporters.

‘This is like winning a World Cup in soccer or getting a world record and a gold medal at the Olympic Games, but it’s possibly harder because no one has been able to do it,’ said McCardel, who works as a first aid trainer in Melbourne.

McCardel trains 50 weeks a year and has a record of accomplishment that includes two double crossings of the English Channel.
She and her husband, Paul, did a thorough study of past failed attempts to see what could be done differently.

Based on their findings, they turned to science to increase the chance of success.

Like past swimmers, McCardel will be surrounded by an underwater electromagnetic field to keep sharks away.

Her support crew of 50 people includes a team of U.S.-based scientists, all experts on the Gulf Stream, to monitor the current and its constant changes as it flows toward the Atlantic Ocean.

Footballer Lionel Messi facing legal action for £3.4million in unpaid income tax in Spain

messi and his girlfriendBarcelona star Lionel Messi has been accused of defrauding £3.4million through false income tax returns in Spain.

The state prosecutor has taken action against the footballer and his father, Jorge Horacio Messi.

Both are accused of three offences against the public purse for allegedly defrauding millions on income tax returns for 2007, 2008 and 2009.

The complaint, signed by prosecutor Raquel Amado, was submitted for trial at the court in Gava, the upmarket Barcelona suburb where the Argentina forward lives.

The footballing star released a statement denying any wrongdoing.

The 25-year-old Argentinian, currently on international duty in South America, swiftly insisted he had done nothing wrong in a statement on his official Facebook page.

He has won six Primera Division titles, three Champions League crowns and two FIFA Club World Cups with the Catalan giants, and in 2012 netted a record 86 goals for club and country.

Barcelona declined to comment.

Armenia Should Send Peacekeeping Forces to Lebanon, but not Mali

հարութBy Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

The Armenian Defense Ministry is considering sending two platoons of troops to southern Lebanon. Ministry officials are traveling to Rome this week to discuss the structure, deployment site, number of troops, and needed supplies with their Italian counterparts who are in charge of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

This is a positive development since 2006 when Pres. Kocharian’s government refrained from joining dozens of countries that had agreed to take part in UN’s peacekeeping mission after Israel’s war with Lebanon. At that time, former Pres. Kocharian’s spokesman told Mediamax that the Armenian government refused to contribute troops because of UNIFIL’s unclear mandate and that any clashes involving Armenian soldiers could endanger the Armenian community in Lebanon. Pres. Kocharian staunchly defended his position on this matter during a private conversation I had with him in 2006.

The Turkish government, on the other hand, was quick to recognize the benefits of sending troops to Lebanon, as part of its effort to establish a military footprint, expand its political and economic influence in the Arab world, gather valuable intelligence, and counteract the Armenian influence in Lebanese affairs. Consequently, Turkish troops entered Lebanon for the first time since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire almost a century ago. Currently, UNIFIL consists of 11,000 troops from 37 countries, including 495 from Turkey. Armenia sent just one officer to southern Lebanon last year on an observer mission. Meanwhile over 130 Armenian soldiers have been serving in Afghanistan and 35 in Kosovo for several years, and until recently in Iraq.

The Armenian government did not fully explain last week as to why is it now interested in sending a peacekeeping force to Lebanon, after former Pres. Kocharian’s refusal to do so seven years ago. In my view, there are five good reasons why Armenia should contribute troops to UNIFIL:

1) The presence of Armenian soldiers on Lebanese soil would generate great pride among the large Armenian community in that country.

2) The Armenian contingent would serve to balance in a small way the pro-Turkish propaganda resulting from a much larger Turkish military deployment in southern Lebanon since 2006.

3) The Armenian troops would be the only ones from the South Caucasus, as neither Azerbaijan nor Georgia has contributed troops to Lebanon.

4) Even though there is an element of risk in sending troops to police southern Lebanon which borders Israel and Syria, this is a far less dangerous mission than Afghanistan where over 130 Armenian soldiers have been serving for a number of years.

5) As in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kosovo, Armenian troops would gain valuable military experience by serving along with contingents from dozens of other countries.

The Armenian Defense Ministry also announced that it might send peacekeeping troops to Mali in Africa, where a series of bloody confrontations have been unfolding. In these clashes, Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist fighters have been battling Malian, French and African forces. A civil war is also raging between separatist Tuareg tribes and Malian troops. The situation is so precarious that U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a report last week warning that peacekeeping troops may face grave risks in and around Mali.

Under such dangerous conditions, it would be unwise for Armenian troops to be dispatched to Mali. The responsibility for the security of Mali is primarily assumed by troops from African countries with logistical support from the French military. Armenia cannot afford to risk the lives of its soldiers unnecessarily, keeping in mind its own security priorities at home due to the Karabagh (Artsakh) conflict.

Having a limited number of Armenian troops serving in less dangerous locations may be a good idea in order to gain military training and diplomatic visibility, but dispatching large numbers of soldiers to multiple theaters of conflict and placing them in perilous situations would be most imprudent, given the small size of the Armenian military.

Although Armenia’s participation in UNIFIL is subject to parliamentary approval, little opposition is expected in view of the ruling party’s overwhelming majority. The Armenian government should seek the Parliament’s consent to dispatch peacekeeping troops to southern Lebanon only. There are many sensible reasons for stationing Armenian units in Lebanon, but not in Mali!

Was it a bird? A Plane? Or a UFO?? Chinese passenger jet hits mysterious object at 26,000ft and lands with severely dented nose cone

UFO hits the plane1A passenger jet was forced to make an emergency landing after a mysterious mid-air collision with a ‘foreign object’ at 26,000ft severely dented its nose cone.

The front of the Air China Boeing 757 had been pushed in and scratches and scraped paintwork  were clearly visible when it landed.

The plane was climbing over China when a large bang was heard from the front of aircraft.

The pilot said the aircraft was struggling to perform and he immediately called air traffic controllers, according to reports.

Experts said investigations into the suspected crash have raised suspicions that the aircraft was hit by a ‘foreign object’.

However, they do not believe it was caused by a bird strike as no blood or feathers were visible on the dented nose cone.

The pictures have prompted online speculation that it was caused by a UFO or a drone strike.

Other theories posted on the Aviation Herald include pressure from rapidly heated and expanded air.

Former government UFO investigator Nick Pope told The Sun that an examination of the nose cone should reveal what hit it.

However, he questioned whether the ‘secretive’ Chinese would reveal the cause.

Mr Pope told The Sun: ‘Cases like this show that whatever people believe about UFOs, there are serious air safety issues here.

Three-day strike by French air traffic controllers disrupts flights across Europe

cancelled flights, France1A three-day strike by French air traffic controllers will cause sweeping cancellations and major delays for holidaymakers across the whole of Europe starting from today.

All airlines using French airports have been asked to cancel 50 per cent of their services, but flights that cross over French airspace will also be affected, causing further disruption across the continent.

The strike action began at 6am local time and air traffic controllers will not return to work until 6am on Friday.

France’s civil aviation authority confirmed that one in every two flights to Paris, Lyon, Toulouse and Bordeaux is cancelled.

Airlines are contacting passengers affected by cancellations and offering them the chance to rebook or receive a refund.

The French strike is being held to protest plans by the EU to create a single European airspace instead of allowing each member state to control its own skies.

Seven dead and six injured after four-storey building collapses in Mumbai’s heavy monsoon rains

mumbai building collapse3At least seven people have been killed after a a four-storey building in Mumbai collapsed in heavy monsoon rains.

Rescuers used sensors and life detectors to search for five other people who were feared trapped in the debris of the building in the Sion area of Mumbai.

Nearby residents said structural alterations made to the ground floor caused the collapse, the Times of India reported.

Building collapses are common in India as builders try to cut corners by using substandard materials, and as multistory structures are built with inadequate supervision.

The massive demand for housing around India’s cities and pervasive corruption often result in builders adding unauthorized floors or putting up illegal buildings.

Willing to die for a new life? Desperate Algerian illegal immigrant tries to enter Spain by clinging onto the back of a ferry just INCHES from the deadly propellers

Algerian immigrantThis is the moment police busted an illegal immigrant who’d risked life and limb trying to enter Spain by stowing away next to the propellers of a ferry.

The desperate Algerian man, 48, had clambered on to the vessel in Tangiers, Morocco, on Saturday – clinging on for dear life for more than two hours as the boat crossed the Straits of Gibraltar.

He had planned to jump into the water, as the ferry came close to shore, and then swim to land.
The desperate man would then evade a border check point and illegally enter the country by jumping over a 10ft fence.

But National Police officers heard of his plot and were waiting for him as the ferry was about to dock in Tarifa.
The man was arrested and taken to an immigration detention centre.

It is not the first time a foreign national has stared death in the face trying to get into a country.
In June 2010 a stowaway hid in the undercarriage of a jumbo jet and survived temperatures of -41c at 25,000ft during a free flight into Britain.

The jobless Romanian crouched in the rear-wheel compartment during an extraordinary 800-mile trip from Vienna to London on a Boeing 747 owned by the Dubai royal family.

Airport officals say the man could easily have been crushed by the plane’s wheels or killed by a lack of oxygen and was ‘incredibly lucky’ to be alive.

He was taken to Heathrow police station but because he was apparently of previous good character, he was given a police caution and released from custody at 2.47pm on Monday.

The man was carrying ID and immigration officials were satisfied he was Romanian and entitled to stay.

Turkish riot police move in on protesters at Taksim Square

130610110550-01-turkey-protest-0610-horizontal-gallerystanbul (CNN) — Turkish riot police in sizable numbers moved into Taksim Square on Tuesday morning, where they engaged in a game of cat-and-mouse with a small, hard-core group of protesters.

The protesters lobbed Molotov cocktails at armored vehicles, which responded by spraying water cannons.

The demonstrators, using wooden boards as shields, would pull back — only to return again, lobbing cocktails and firecrackers and flashing “victory” signs.

Smoke from tear gas and fireworks wafted through the air as the armored vehicles shoved away makeshift barriers set up by the demonstrators.

The small group reappeared, this time in larger numbers and surrounded an armored vehicle.

Police deployed multiple canisters of teargas and fired water cannons, sending them scattering again.

“If you stop throwing rocks, we will not use tear gas,” the police told the raucous group over loud speakers. “We don’t want you to get hurt, please obey.”

Police move in on Turkey’s Taksim Square

Turkey protesters dig in for long haul

At Gezi Park, the seat of the protest, however, the situation was relatively calm.

There, demonstrators milled about as officers in full riot gear huddled together.

“Look we are not coming into Gezi Park,” the loud speakers said.

“Most of the crowd is situated in the park,” said Efe Songun, who attended the protests. “They are shouting their slogans.”

A show of force

The police movement came one day before Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan planned to meet with protest organizers. The presence appeared more to be a show of force at the square than an effort to flush out protesters who have been camped there for days.

The demonstrations in Turkey started as a small sit-in over plans to bulldoze the park — the last green space in central Istanbul — and replace it with a shopping mall.

But they have grown into a protest across the political spectrum.

Demonstrators have demanded Erdogan’s resignation, accusing his government of creeping authoritarianism.

The result has been the biggest challenge to Erdogan and his governing Justice and Development Party during their decade in power.

Erdogan fights back

And the prime minister has fought back.

In speeches, Erdogan has said he has no tolerance for what he calls illegal demonstrations.

Sunday, he slammed protesters, warning that “even patience has an end.”

He criticized protesters’ tactics and challenged them to beat him at the ballot box.

“All they do is destroy. They attacked public buildings; they burned public buildings. They burned the cars of civilians,” he said.

“Let’s face off at the ballot box in seven months. If you are saying democracy and freedom, if you are saying rights and freedoms, you cannot achieve that with violence. Only within the laws, you can achieve it.”

Violence at past protests

Previous protests have met with a harsher police response, garnering broad criticism from inside and outside of Turkey’s borders.

Since the demonstrations started May 31, two protesters have been killed. One was hit by a car in Istanbul; the other was shot in the head by unknown assailants in Antakya, near the border with Syria.

A police captain died after falling from a bridge last week, the Adana governor’s office said.

The Turkish Medical Association claimed that more than 4,300 people were injured in clashes last week. Only a few dozen sustained serious injuries.

‘I guess everyone grows up!’ Justin Bieber’s delight as he tweets picture of a bra thrown onstage by fan

Բիբերի երկրպագուհու կրծքկալըHis actions have made it very clear that he no longer wishes to be seen as a child star.

And Justin Bieber took to his Instagram on Sunday to remind the world that he is not the only one who is getting older.

The 19-year-old pop star shared a lone bra lying face down on the stage from his show – an expression of support from an overly excited fan.

He simply captioned the picture: ‘I guess everyone grows up.’

Because he started his career at such a tender age, Justin’s fans are growing up alongside him.

Where shrilling pre-teens would have previously thrown stuffed animals and held glittery signs in the air, young women are now tossing their undergarments onstage.

The Beauty And The Beat singer recently opened up about what it’s like to grow up under the attentive eye of the modern-day media.

When accepting the Milestone Award during the Billboard Music Awards in May, he stood up for himself while a handful of crowd members booed.

‘This is not a gimmick, and I’m an artist, and I should be taken seriously.’

Kuwaiti woman jailed for 11 YEARS for tweeting that nation’s ruler should be overthrown

KUWAIT-US-OBAMAA teacher has been sentenced to 11 years in prison today for tweets that insulted Kuwait’s ruler and encouraged his overthrow.

Huda al-Ajmi, 37, received the longest known sentence for online dissent in the Gulf state, according to Kuwaiti opposition groups.

She reportedly faced three separate charges that included insulting the Emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, which carries a one-year sentence in itself.

The other two five-year prison terms were given for inciting rebellion against the regime and violating laws on public discussions.

Although Kuwait is more liberal than many Gulf states, authorities are

increasingly cracking down on perceived dissent over social media.

However, it is unusual for a woman to serve jail time for political crimes in Kuwait.

Recently two female activists were punished with lighter jail terms but ended up with suspended sentences.
