Kerry Warns Russia of Tough New Sanctions

ջոն քերրի

Secretary of State John Kerry is warning Russia of harsher economic sanctions if it doesn’t back down from involvement in Ukraine.

Kerry was testifying Tuesday before a Senate panel. He said pro-Russia demonstrations at regional government headquarters in Kharkiv and the Donetsk regional administration were contrived and a pretext for military intervention.

Kerry said the U.S. and European allies were united and willing to impose tough new penalties on Russian energy, banking and mining if Moscow fails to honor a sovereign Ukraine.

Kerry said he would meet next week in Europe with Russia Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov (SEHR’-gay LAHV’-rahf) and Ukrainian officials. He said Russia has a choice and can work with the international community.

Clinton says he ‘wouldn’t be surprised if we were visited by aliens’

Բիլ ՔլինթոնԲիլ

Bill

Bill Clinton thinks we might not be alone.

In an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday, the former president said he wouldn’t be surprised if we were visited by aliens one day.

‘We know now we live in an ever-expanding universe,’ Clinton told Kimmel. ‘We know there are billions of stars and planets literally out there – and the universe is getting bigger.

‘We know from our fancy telescopes that just in the last two years more than 20 planets have been identified outside our solar system that seem to be far enough away from their suns – and dense enough – that they might be able to support some form of life.’

He added: ‘So it makes it increasing less likely that we’re alone.’

But when Kimmel pushed on whether there actually are aliens, Clinton responded: ‘I’m trying to tell you I don’t know.’

Clinton assured Kimmel that soon after he became president, he instructed his aides to research Area 51, the Nevada military facility, to make sure there were no aliens there.

Բիլ Քլինթոն

He said that while he had no evidence of aliens, he said that their existence could have surprising benefits for the world.

‘It may be the only way to unite this increasingly divided world of ours… think about all the differences among people of Earth would seem small if we feel threatened by a space invader,’ Clinton said.

‘That’s the whole theory of Independence Day. Everybody gets together and makes nice.’

Hollywood ALREADY working on movie about Malaysia Airlines tragedy

Հոլիվուդ, ինքնաթիռ,ֆիլմ

While the Australian military continue to search the southern Indian Ocean for the wreckage of the missing Malaysia Airlines plane, producers in Hollywood are already working on a possible movie adaptation of the tragic crash.

Although no studio has been pitched about a Flight 370 project, one movie-industry producer told the Hollywood Reporter that he doesn’t doubt at least 50 projects are being developed.

While Hollywood may be starting the gears on an adaptation, it’s still unlikely that a film about the disaster will be in theaters anytime soon.

It took five years for any major motion picture to be released following 9/11, with Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center and Paul Greengrass’ United 93.

But the biggest impediment to any project is that details are still scant about what caused the plane to go off course and crash into the sea.

A Minnesota farmer turned the snow that was ruining his greenhouses this winter into a spectacular 50-foot snowman that is now attracting national media attention and visitors from miles around.

Greg Novak knew he had to clean up the nuisance snow, but he also thought it would be a great way to perk up his Gilman community deep in the winter doldrums.

Hundreds of hours and about five weeks later, people began flocking to Novak’s farm as news of his impressive creation filled up newsfeeds, inboxes and social media across the web.

Friends and family pitched in to help with Granddaddy, or to do farm chores while Novak worked on building the snowman using a skid loaders to pile snow and a silage blower to direct snow into stacked cylinders, the St. Cloud Times reported.

New York Times corrects article about ’12 Years a Slave’ — 161 years later

12 Years a Slave

It’s a correction more than 160 years in the making.

In its Tuesday edition, The New York Times published a correction for an article that ran on January 20, 1853.

The newspaper has Hollywood and Twitter to thank for bringing the error to light.

The Times explained that the article in question told the story of Solomon Northup, a free African-American man who was kidnapped and sold into slavery.

Northup’s memoir, “12 Years a Slave,” was turned into a movie that won the best picture Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards on Sunday.

The problem was that the 1853 article spelled Northup’s name wrong, in two different ways. It appeared as Northrop in the body of the article and Northrup in the headline.

As the Oscars focused attention on “12 Years a Slave,” a Twitter user unearthed the old article from The Times archives, and it spread quickly on social media.

“The errors came to light on Monday after a Twitter user pointed out the article in The Times archives,” the correction said.

NASA discovers 715 new planets

 մոլորակ

Our galactic neighborhood just got a lot bigger. NASA on Wednesday announced the discovery of 715 new planets, by far the biggest batch of planets ever unveiled at once.

By way of comparison, about 1,000 planets total had been identified in our galaxy before Wednesday.

Four of those planets are in what NASA calls the “habitable zone,” meaning they have the makeup to potentially support life.

The planets, which orbit 305 different stars, were discovered by the Kepler space telescope and were verified using a new technique that scientists expect to make new planetary discoveries more frequent and more detailed.

NASA says 95% of the planets discovered by Kepler are smaller than Neptune, which is four times as big as Earth.

One of them is about twice the size of Earth and orbits a star half the size of Earth’s sun in a 30-day cycle.

Justin Bieber security guard, driver arrested in alleged camera theft

unnamedOne of Justin Bieber’s security guards and a driver were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of stealing a photographer’s camera in Sandy Springs, Georgia.

The photographer was waiting outside of a suburban Atlanta arcade that Bieber was in when the guard confronted the photographer, according to Steve Rose, a spokesman for the Sandy Springs Police Department.

The photographer left and was then followed by the bodyguard and another man driving a Cadillac Escalade, the spokesman said. The men stopped the photographer’s car in an adjacent parking lot.

The security guard then took the camera from the photographer and fled to the home that Bieber is currently renting in Sandy Springs, Rose said.

A police officer stopped the bodyguard and the driver in the driveway of the home, spotted the camera and took both men into custody.

Both face felony theft charges for the camera, estimated to be worth $10,000.

Bieber was not involved in the incident.

Senator McCain Offends Visiting Syrian Church Leaders

Հարութ Սասունյան

By Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

Sen. John McCain is a prime example of how U.S. officials so often have misjudged overseas crises, believing that the best way to bring democracy to a country is through massive US bombing and invasion.

The Arizona Senator has been highly critical of Pres. Obama’s ‘arm the rebels strategy,’ urging a more direct US military intervention in Syria. Sen. McCain does not seem to understand that toppling Pres. Bashar Al-Assad would result in more deaths and destruction, and turn Syria into a major hub of international terrorism. Over 30,000 Islamic Jihadists from dozens of countries currently are fighting the Syrian government and each another — surely, not to bring democracy to Syria!

In fact, the former Republican presidential candidate is so obsessed with beating the drums of war that reportedly he behaved in an ill-tempered and discourteous manner with a group of high-ranking Christian Syrian leaders, just because they were not advocating violent regime change. The church delegation had come to Washington last month seeking a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict and protection for Christians numbering around two million — 10% of the country’s population.

The visiting Church leaders included Bishop Armash Nalbandian, Primate of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Damascus, and representatives of the Presbyterian, Evangelical, Syrian Orthodox, and Greek Orthodox churches of Syria. The delegation met with members of Congress, State Department officials, U.S. NGO’s, academics, religious leaders, and members of the media.

The Syrian clergymen were gratified with their Washington visit, except for their unpleasant encounter with Sen. McCain, as described by Judicial Watch:

“Hell-bent on arming opposition forces in Syria — despite strong evidence that they’re run by Islamic terrorists — John McCain displayed behavior unbecoming of a United States Senator during a recent meeting with Syrian Christian leaders touring Capitol Hill.… Senator McCain, an Arizona Republican, evidently doesn’t want to hear negative stories about the rebels he’s working to arm. So he stormed out of a closed-door meeting with the Syrian clergy officials last week…. McCain marched into the committee room yelling, according to a high-level source that attended the meeting, and quickly stormed out. ‘He was incredibly rude,’ the source told Judicial Watch…. Following the shameful tantrum, McCain reentered the room and sat briefly, but refused to make eye contact with the participants, instead ignoring them by looking down at what appeared to be random papers.”

During their meetings in Washington, the Syrian Christian leaders informed U.S. officials about the unfolding massive human tragedy in their country and the precarious situation of Christian communities; kidnapping of Christian Bishops, priests, nuns, and parishioners; attacks on Christian villages; desecration of churches and holy sites; and violations of religious freedom by armed Islamists.

Given the escalating bloodshed in Syria, the Church leaders asked the United States to:

— End all military and financial aid to armed rebels;

— Demand from U.S allies — Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey — not to support the terrorists;

— Ask that all sides of the conflict stop the violence, including bombings and terrorism;

— Resolve the conflict through dialogue, not military action;

— Ensure the Syrian people’s security;

— Protect the Christian minorities;

— Protect the churches and mosques;

— Protect religious, historical, and cultural monuments;

— Assist in the distribution of humanitarian aid in Syria.

The website of the Syrian Armenian Committee for Urgent Relief and Rehabilitation (SACURR) — www.syriashdab.com — reported that as of Sept. 30, 2013, the war caused serious harm to the Armenian community: 64 civilians murdered, 172 injured, 110 kidnapped, and 15 soldiers killed in action. Moreover, various Armenian institutions were damaged: seven Apostolic and three Catholic churches; 13 schools; and 10 community centers.  Close to half of 65,000 Syrian-Armenians has fled to Armenia, Lebanon and elsewhere.

SACURR, composed of nine major Armenian social, religious and political organizations in Syria, reported that by the end of September it had received $1.7 million from overseas Armenian entities. Even though this is a small fraction of the amount needed, SACURR has been able to provide food, shelter, security, and medical and educational assistance to Syrian Armenians, including $500,000 in tuition aid to 6,436 students in 38 schools.

Sen. McCain and other foolhardy U.S. officials would do well to heed the wise counsel of the visiting Syrian Christian leaders. Dispatching more weapons to Syria would only exacerbate the fighting, resulting in endless bloodshed.

China calls on U.S. to scrap meeting between Obama and Dalai Lama

China has urged U.S. President Barack Obama to call off a meeting at the White House with Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama that’s scheduled to take place Friday.

“By arranging a meeting between the President and the Dalai Lama, the U.S. side will grossly interfere in the internal affairs of China, seriously violate norms governing international relations and severely impair China-U.S. relations,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement Friday.

The White House on Thursday announced the planned meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama, who lives in exile.

Obama has met with the Dalai Lama twice before, in February 2010 and July 2011. China responded to those meetings with similarly angry comments.

Beijing accuses the Dalai Lama of being a separatist who foments unrest in Tibet, a region it claims has been part of China since “ancient times.”

The Obama administration says it supports the Dalai Lama’s “Middle Way” approach to the political tensions over protests for Tibetan independence.

“The United States recognizes Tibet to be a part of the People’s Republic of China and we do not support Tibetan independence,” said National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden. “The United States strongly supports human rights and religious freedom in China.”

MEMBERS OF CONGRESS JOIN GLOBAL PROTEST ON 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF SAFAROV MURDER OF GURGEN MARGARYAN

schiff_cicilline_pallone_tweets— Reps. Schiff, Cicilline and Pallone Participate in Social Media Campaign Condemning Azerbaijan’s Pardon, Praise and Promotion of Unrepentant Axe Murderer Ramil Safarov
WASHINGTON, DC – Ten years after the brutal murder of Armenian Lt. Gurgen Margaryan, Representatives Adam Schiff (D-CA), David Cicilline (D-RI) and Congressional Armenian Caucus Co-Chair Frank Pallone (D-NJ) joined with Armenians worldwide in condemning the Azerbaijani government’s pardon, praise and promotion of his confessed but still unrepentant murderer, Lt. Ramil Safarov, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).
“Thanks to the AYF for launching this global initiative, to a worldwide legion of online activists for sending our message of peace and justice across the internet, and, of course, to our friends, Representatives Adam Schiff, Frank Pallone, and David Cicilline, for adding their vital voices to this far-reaching awareness-raising campaign,” stated ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian.
The U.S. Representatives joined a targeted Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram campaign, spearheaded by the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF) in the United States and Canada, to raise awareness about Safarov’s brutal axe murder of Margaryan, in his sleep, during a NATO sponsored English language peace training program.  In August, 2012, Safarov, who had been tried, convicted and imprisoned for his actions in Hungary, was inexplicably extradited back to Azerbaijan, where he was given a hero’s welcome by President Ilham Aliyev, in addition to financial compensation and a promotion in military rank.  A chilling video featuring Azerbaijani Government officials openly and proudly praising the axe-murderer can be viewed at:http://youtu.be/ualn6CqJltU
In a tweet timed with the AYF international effort, Rep. Schiff stated “Azerbaijani soldier Ramil Safarov should never have been pardoned for butchering an Armenian Army officer. Appalling. #Justice4Margaryan”  In an expanded statement shared with the ANCA, Rep. Schiff explained, “Ten years later, we remember Armenian Lt. Gurgen Margaryan, who was hacked to death by Azerbaijani soldier Ramil Safarov while participating in a NATO training exercise in Hungary.  Safarov should be in prison, but inexplicably, he was extradited back to Azerbaijan from Hungary in 2012.  Instead of serving out his sentence in an Azeri jail, he was pardoned, promoted to Major, given back pay and paraded through the streets of Baku in a disgusting and bloodthirsty welcome home.”
Rep. Cicilline echoed these thoughts in his tweet, noting “On the 10th Anniversary of the brutal death of Lt. Gurgen Margaryan, we honor his memory & rededicate ourselves to #Justice4Margaryan.”  Upon Aliyev’s release of Safarov in 2012, Rep. Cicilline commented that, “Over the years, serious questions have been raised about whether the Azerbaijani government is truly committed to developing a peaceful, nonviolent relationship with the people of Armenia. Its reckless actions this week do nothing to address these concerns.”

Rep. Pallone was equally adamant about the need for justice for Margaryan’s murder, in this tweet:  “10yrs after he was killed by Azerbaijani Lt. Ramil Safarov, we still seek #Justice4Margaryan. Must hold Safarov accountable for his crime.”  Following Safarov’s release, Rep. Pallone had stated that Azerbaijan’s actions “only further confirm their desire to facilitate and condone violence against Armenia and its people.”
All tweets honoring Margaryan’s memory can be viewed by searching #Justice4Margaryan in the Twitter feed.
Azerbaijan’s glorification of Safarov in 2012 sparked international outrage, but did not result in his return to prison.  A statement issued by the White House on August 31, 2012, stated, “President Obama is deeply concerned by today’s announcement that the President of Azerbaijan has pardoned Ramil Safarov following his return from Hungary. Safarov confessed to the murder of Armenian Army officer Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest in 2004, and was serving a life sentence in Hungary for this brutal crime. We are communicating to Azerbaijani authorities our disappointment about the decision to pardon Safarov. This action is contrary to ongoing efforts to reduce regional tensions and promote reconciliation.”  The OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs expressed “their deep concern and regret for the damage the pardon and any attempts to glorify the crime have done to the peace process and trust between the sides.” Over dozen U.S. Senate and House members condemned the Azerbaijani action.
