A load of hot air: More than 400 balloons take to the skies in French bid to break the world record for a mass take off

Lorraine Mondial international hot air balloon festival (1)Filling the sky with a mass of colour, these extraordinary pictures show hundreds of balloons taking off during a new world record attempt.

A total of 408 hot air balloons took off from a former Nato base in Chambley, France, in the hope of setting a new record for a mass take-off.

The balloonists are taking part in the Lorraine Mondial international hot air balloon festival, which is held at the Chambley-Bussieres Aerodrome.

They were attempting to beat the previous record, which was only set on Saturday at the same festival when 343 balloons successfully took to the air.

This broke the previous record of 329 balloons, set in 2009.

The popular festival has been taking place in France since 1989 and attracts balloonists from around the world.

Previous record attempts at the festival have been hampered by bad weather. In 2011, hundreds of balloonists had to postpone their attempt while poor conditions cleared.

Hot air balloon festivals are held annually around the world every year.

It said Thursday that Hague “made clear that the U.K. was open to improvements in the bilateral relationship with Iran, on a step-by-step and reciprocal basis” and is willing to meet in New York in September during the United Nations General Assembly.

The call comes after Hasan Rouhani won Iran’s June 14 presidential election.

Rouhani has pledged to follow a “path of moderation,” reviving hopes for easing tensions with the West.

Pope Francis Says He Won’t Judge Gay People

AP_pope_francis_dm_130729_16x9_992 (1)Pope Francis told reporters today that he would not judge or marginalize gay people within the Roman Catholic Church.

“If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Francis asked reporters.

Francis’ calls for treating gay people with dignity is a clear departure from the style and approach of his two most recent predecessors.

Francis’ remarks came in a wide-ranging interview aboard a flight back from Brazil in his first foreign trip as pontiff.

Francis, 76, also said in the interview that having Benedict at the Vatican is like having a wise grandfather at home, to whom he turns for advice.

What a bright idea! Umbrellas unfurled above Portuguese street shower colour onto people below

A colourful canopy of umbrellas is suspended over the baking hot streets of Agueda in Portugal1This colourful canopy over the baking hot streets of Agueda in Portugal will not only keep you dry but will certainly put many other art exhibitions in the shade.

The sea of umbrellas brings a shower of colour over the town’s narrow lanes and creates a beautiful scene – while also protecting passers-by from the baking sun.

While they appear to be floating magically in mid-air, the umbrellas are actually held up by string.

In place from July to September, the project has been developed by Umbrella Sky Project of the firm Sextafeira Produgues, who are dedicated to creating various urban installations using low-cost concepts.
The bright idea not only attracts attention but also beautifies everyday life, primarily through the use of colour.

Returning to the town for the second year, images from previous years have travelled the world and many now visit the Portuguese region to see Agueda’s colourful umbrella sky.

77 dead after train derails, splits apart in Spain

130724171530-01-spain-train---restricted-horizontal-galleryMadrid (CNN) — An express train derailed as it hurtled around a curve in northwestern Spain on Wednesday, killing at least 77 people and injuring more than 100, officials said.

At least 73 people died at the scene, and four others died while hospitalized, said María Pardo Ríos, spokeswoman for the Galicia regional supreme court. In Spain, judges typically record deaths that take place outside of hospitals.

Judicial teams are still at the crash site and expect to find more bodies, she told CNN Thursday morning. There is no word yet on the nationalities of those killed.

More than 20 injured victims remained in critical condition early Thursday, said Agustin Hernandez Fernandez of the Galicia infrastructure ministry.

Flames burst out of one train car as another car was snapped in half, following the crash. Rescue crews and fellow passengers pulled out bodies through broken windows and pried open doors as stunned survivors looked on.

The state railway, Renfe, said the train crashed on a curve several kilometers from the train station in the city of Santiago de Compostela.

The train had 218 passengers aboard and was nearing the end of a six-hour trip from Madrid to the town of Ferrol in northwest Spain when it derailed at 8:41 p.m., Wednesday, the railway said.

It was unclear how fast the train was traveling when it crashed. It was capable of going up to 250 kilometers per hour (155 mph), said Julio Hermida, spokesman for the state railway.

The train driver, who suffered minor injuries, told police he had entered the bend too fast, Spain’s public service TV network TVE reported.

Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy viewed the scene of devastation Thursday morning. He is also expected to visit the injured in hospital, TVE said.

Rajoy, who is from the area, expressed his condolences to those affected by the accident via Twitter.

Alberto Nunez Feijoo, head of the regional government in Galicia, declared seven days of mourning for victims of the train tragedy, TVE reported.

A passenger who got off at the last stop before the train derailed told the broadcaster it was packed with people at the time.

Residents who lived near the tracks told the Voz de Galicia newspaper that they heard a thunderous bang when the train crashed. Many of them rushed to the area with blankets and bottled water for the injured, the newspaper reported.

“The train had broken in half. Some pieces were on top, some pieces were on the bottom,” said Ivette Rubiera Cabrera of Florida, who caught a glimpse of the wreckage while on a family vacation in Spain and sent photos to CNN’s iReport.

“It was quite shocking,” she said. “We had never seen anything like that. We had just been on the train last week.”

Oscar Mateos told Spain’s El Pais newspaper that he saw fellow passengers thrown to the floor, then tossed from one side of the train to the other.

“Help came in five minutes, but that time became an eternity,” he said. “I helped people get out with broken legs and many bruises.”

Alen Perez, 16, said he had been walking nearby and saw passengers helping each other out of the train.

Emergency vehicles swarmed the scene. There were several bodies on the ground, he said.

Photos he took of the crash site showed mangled pieces of a train car and black smoke billowing out of the wreckage.

Investigators are looking at all possible causes of the crash, a senior aide to the prime minister said Wednesday. Their initial assessment indicates it probably wasn’t an act of terrorism.

Are you there and safe? Tell us what’s happening

Renfe’s spokesman said he did not know how many crew members were aboard the train when it crashed. Normally there would be at least five crew members on a train like that, he said.

Firefighters, police and psychologists were at the scene, the Galicia government said in a statement. In Twitter posts, officials said blood donations were needed as a result of the crash.

Spain’s train infrastructure authority said it was investigating.

The crash occurred shortly before a large annual celebration was set to start in Santiago de Compostela, a popular tourist destination. Local officials canceled festivities planned for Wednesday night and Thursday.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said his thoughts were with the victims and their families. One British citizen was injured in the accident, he said.

Venice finally mapped by Street View: Google staff ditched the famous car and strapped cameras to their backs in order to capture the city’s canals

Google has finally overcome the obstacle of a lack of streets as they capture Venice on footThe Italian city of Venice has finally made it onto Google Street View – despite being built on water.

Google has finally overcome the obstacle of capturing a city with no streets after strapping 360° cameras to employees who have travelled around Venice on foot.

Normally, Google Street View images are taken by a specially equipped car, but in the case of the popular Italian destination, extreme measures had to be taken.

Employees have made their across Venice’s piazzas and narrow walkways wearing backpacks containing the 33lbs cameras, and images should be available in two weeks.
The cameras, named The Trekker, have been used by Google to capture places only available by foot, such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

bull runThousands of daredevils have raced through Pamplona in a hair-raising running of the bulls, one day after an American and two Spaniards were gored by the beasts on the same streets.

There were no gorings on Saturday, but a crush of fallen runners blocked the entrance to the bullring, briefly stopping the bulls from entering it.

At least one person appeared to be seriously injured there, and four others were taken to hospital for cuts and bruises, said Javier Sesma, health spokesman for the province of Navarra.

Pope demands brand new life-size statue of him at Buenos Aires cathedral is taken down as he ‘does not wish to become a celebrity’

A figure depicting Pope Francis, made by sculptor Fernando Pugliese, is seen in Buenos AiresAt the age of 76 he became a household name and a magazine cover star.

But Pope Francis is apparently desperate to avoid becoming a celebrity – he has ordered the removal of a new life-size statue of him in Buenos Aires cathedral.

Since its installation two weeks ago believers visited the statue in the cathedral’s garden to pay homage to the pontiff, while tourists posed for photos alongside it.

But Francis, formerly Archbishop of the Argentine capital, was reportedly horrified at the news.

He got straight on the phone and had strong words with the priest responsible telling him: ‘Get that thing down, immediately’, the Argentinian newspaper Clarin reported.

Church sources told the newspaper that Francis is determined to avoid creating ‘a cult of personality’ like that enjoyed by John Paul II.

Since his election in March, Francis has gone to lengths to be seen as humble, showing little patience for the pomp and fuss that come with his position as head of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics.

Elton John Has Appendicitis, Requires Surgery

elton_johnElton John is suffering from appendicitis that requires surgery, a spokesman for the singer confirms to ABC News. As a result, the award-winning singer has canceled all upcoming shows, including a headlining concert on Friday at a London music festival.

“Elton is incredibly disappointed to postpone these tour dates,” his rep stated. “To know that he made such super-human efforts and continued to perform to thousands through his illness only confirms his dedication to his European fans. It’s fizz, but not as you know it: French wine firm horrifies wine snobs by creating world’s first bottle of red flavoured with COLA

Rouge Sucette, red wine with cola flavorA French drinks company is launching a red wine that will have the edge on its competitors – by adding a dash of cola.

In a break with tradition Rouge Sucette, French for red lollipop, is made from 75 per cent grapes with the remainder from water, sugar and cola flavouring.

Sure to horrify connoisseurs, it is designed to appeal to the younger ‘Coke generation’.

Winemakers fear that young people who drink endless spirits and mixers but are not so keen on wine will be difficult to attract if they do not adapt to their palette.

The 9 per cent ABV blend is part of a new range by Aquitaine-based firm Haussmann Famille.

The company recommends serving it ice-cold for the summer weather.

It went on sale this week for 2.95 euros a bottle and is hoped to become a feature of French barbeques and summer drinks parties.

Pauline Lacombe, Marketing Director of Haussmann Famille, said: ‘The result is surprising; the balance between the bitterness of the wine and the sweetness of the cola is perfect.’

‘This kind of product is more dedicated to young adults, and women.

‘We have worked closely with a lab in Bordeaux, specialised in aroma.’

Married spy couple jailed in Germany after spying for their Russian paymasters for 25 years

A married spy couple have been jailed in Germany after being found guilty of espionage for their Russian paymasters for 25 years.

The couple, codenamed Andreas and Heidrun Anschlag, are said to have settled in former West Germany on false passports a quarter of a century ago.

They began their snooping career in the same city – Dresden – where Russian leader Vladimir Putin was posted for the KGB.

The duo are accused of first feeding information about West Germany to the former Soviet Union, then the reunited land to the Russian Republic.

‘The accused had the task of gathering information about the political and military strategy of the EU and NATO,’ said the prosecutor at their trial, as well as ‘security-relevant political aspects of relations between Germany, the EU and NATO to Russia.’

Investigators said it was due to information gleaned from the interrogations in America that led to the arrests of the spy duo in Germany.

Two Austrian passports, both said to be forgeries made by the counterfeiters of the SVR, were seized when they were taken into custody.

A court in Stuttgart gave Andreas Anschlag six years and six months, and Heidrun five years and six months.

Their daughter was born and raised in Germany and knew nothing of their activities – nor of their true identities before they became spies.

Italian beach town bans bikinis with fines of up to €500 for those who dare to bare

Italian beachA seaside town in southern Italy has astonished locals and holiday-makers by instituting a ban on bikinis.

The coastal town of Vietri Sul Mare on the AmalfiCoast has barred anyone from showing too much flesh outside of the beach.

Holiday makers walking around town in skimpy swimwear or bare-chested will now face a steep fine.

The restrictions against bikinis and bare chests was first brought in in 2010. However, the town’s mayor Franco Benincasa has now decided to enforce hefty fines in order to better protect the town’s ‘image’.

Offenders who are caught flaunting bare skin on streets, in public areas and, most of all on the marina of the upmarket seaside town, will face a fine of up to €500.

Vietri Sul Mare’s is not the first town in the area to implement the controversial move. In 2010, another coastal town in the region, Castellammare di Stabia, passed a similar ban, outlawing ‘very skimpy clothes’, alongside blasphemy and football kickabouts.

Local police commissioner Vincenzo Alfano said: ‘The ban was created to protect the image and decorum of all the townspeople and all the tourists in the area.

‘Very often we have witnessed indecent and shameful scenes of people entering public places such as bars and restaurants, shirtless or in costume.

‘In our opinion, it is an attitude that must be eliminated.’

EXCLUSIVE ‘Our family is complete. The boys need each other’: David Furnish opens up on being a dad and life with Elton John

elton jhon and his familyThey became proud parents for a second time when they welcomed son Elijah into the world in January.

But despite being delighted to have given their first-born, Zachary, two, a baby brother, David Furnish has insisted he and Sir Elton John’s family is now ‘complete’ and they won’t be having any more children in the future.

The 50-year-old director admitted he and the 66-year-old musician are thrilled to seen their two young sons having found a ‘companion’ in each other.

Speaking previously about his love for his growing family, Sir Elton admitted that such was the intensity of love he feels for their firstborn, who was born on Christmas Day 2010, he was worried if he would ever be able to love another child as much.

‘But I have learned that a parent’s capacity for love is endless’ he said. ‘When another child is born, our depth of love just grows deeper and wider, so it was very emotional.

Salini wants to donate 20 million euros to restore Pompeii

(Reuters)- Italian construction magnate Pietro Salini is prepared to donate 20 million euros ($26 million) to help restore and preserve the ancient city of Pompeii, which has been damaged by weather and plagued by the mafia and corrupt management.

“It would be a crime to let Pompeii crumble,” Salini, CEO of Impregilo, said at a press conference on Thursday to present the construction company’s new strategy plan following a takeover of Impregilo by his family owned group.

When the nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, the Roman city of Pompeii was buried in ash for centuries underground. Excavations have uncovered portions of the city, exposing it to the elements and turning it into one of Italy’s top tourist sites.

Salini said his aim was to attract other international donors to help relaunch one of the world’s most treasured archaeological sites.

Italy declared a state of emergency in Pompeii in 2008 after archaeologists complained about poor upkeep, mismanagement and lack of investment.

In February, the European Union launched a 105-million-euro restoration of Pompeii and said it would seek to protect conservation funds from the local mafia.

The EU project began a day after police arrested a restorer on suspicion of pocketing hugely inflated fees for work at the crumbling ancient town.

Salini’s plan echoes similar moves by Italian companies to help the country’s cultural heritage such as the restoration of Rome’s Colosseum sponsored by luxury shoemaker Tod’s.

France bans Depardieu from driving after he fell off his scooter drunk (not that he cares now he lives in Russia)

depardieu2Gerard Depardieu has been banned from driving for six months and fined 4,000 Euros for drink driving.

The ban follows an incident in November last year when the actor, 64, fell off his scooter and was taken to a police station drunk.

Depardieu’s lawyer, Eric de Caumont, said he planned to appeal Friday’s ruling. He said his client, who was not at the hearing, was in Moscow filming.

The Frenchman has publicly feuded with France’s Socialist government over high taxes and has accepted a Russian passport offered by Vladimir Putin.

Agence France-Presse reported that when police arrived at the scene and tested Depardieu, he showed a blood alcohol level of 1.8 grams per litre, well above the French limit for driving of 0.5.

In 1998 the actor was involved in a motorcycle crash when his blood-alcohol level was five times over the legal limit. He escaped with leg and face injuries.
