Putin Says No Discrimination of Gays in Russia

vladimir putin (1)President Vladimir Putin denied Thursday that gays face discrimination in Russia, saying that a new law that has drawn protests worldwide does not infringe on their rights.

Putin on Thursday maintained that the law bans only “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations among minors.” He argued that it is “no infringement on the rights of sexual minorities” and insisted that European laws allowing gay marriage contribute to population declines.

The Russian law has prompted calls for boycotts of the 2014 Winter Olympics hosted by Russia in Sochi.

Putin said while some European nations have allowed gay marriages, “the Europeans are dying out … and gay marriages don’t produce children.”

“Do you want to survive by accepting immigrants?” Putin said. “Society can’t absorb such a number of immigrants. Let us make our own choice, as we see it for our country.”

Greenpeace Says 2 Activists Held in Russian Arctic

The environmentalist group Greenpeace says two of its activists have been arrested after climbing onto an oil platform in Russia’s Arctic waters. It claims warning shots were fired across the organization’s ship.

A Greenpeace statement says the arrests were made Wednesday in the Pechora Sea, a section of the Barents Sea. The activists, who climbed a platform belonging to state gas company Gazprom, are being held on a Russian Coast Guard ship, according to Greenpeace.

The statement said the Coast Guard fired 11 shots across the Greenpeace ship that brought activists to the area.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Security Service, which includes the Coast Guard, said she had no immediate information on the incident.

Putin: Foreign Nations Try to Destabilize Caucasus

putinPresident Vladimir Putin has ordered Russian security agencies to act more harshly to fend off foreign attempts to destabilize the restive North Caucasus region ahead of the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.

Addressing Monday’s meeting of the presidential Security Council, Putin said unspecified “foreign countries and public and international organizations under their control keep seeing the North Caucasus as a foothold for destabilizing Russia as a whole.”

Putin added that “neutralizing the terrorist and criminal threats is particularly important in connection with the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.”

The North Caucasus region has been engulfed by an Islamist insurgency following two separatist wars in Chechnya.

Germany Joins US in Blaming Assad for Attack

G20Germany has joined the United States and ten other members of the Group of 20 biggest economies in blaming the Syrian government for a chemical attack against civilians last month.

Germany had been the only European member of the G-20 not to co-sign a joint statement issued Friday at the end of the G20 meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The statement calls for a strong international response against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad but stops short of explicitly calling for military action against the Syrian government.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Saturday in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius that Germany wanted to wait for European Union foreign ministers to agree on a common position before backing the statement.

‘It’s a cat – from the rear’: Russian President Putin shows rarely seen fun-loving side as he draws animal’s bottom for giggling students

President PutinThe Russian President showed off his skills with a classroom sketch on a white board at a middle school in the Siberian Kurgan.

Pupils were left giggling when the president revealed that he had drawn a cat’s behind for the class.

‘This is for you to remember’  he said, before carrying on with his sketch, the Huffington Post reports.

When a pupil asked what the drawing was, Putin replied: ‘It’s a cat – from the rear’, causing the class to collpase into giggles.

It comes days after the Russian President displayed a less flippant attitude to art, when police seized a painting of him wearing women’s underwear from a gallery, saying the satirical display had broken the law.

Russian girl, 8, orphaned after her ENTIRE family is wiped out by deadly gas caused by rotting potatoes in the cellar

Maria ChelyshevaAn eight-year-old Russian girl has been orphaned after her entire family was wiped out by deadly gas caused from rotting potatoes.

Grief-stricken Maria Chelysheva lost her father, mother, brother and grandmother who were killed one by one after entering a cellar where they stored potatoes for the winter.

Relatives are caring for the girl who is inconsolable over her loss.

Her father, respected law professor Mikhail Chelyshev, 42, was first to enter the cellar, not realising the potatoes had become seriously rotten.

He fainted from the noxious fumes, and soon afterwards died, say police.

When he failed to re-appear, his worried wife Anastasia, 38, went to look for him in the dark and was also overcome by the poisonous gas.

Next the couple’s 18 year old son Georgy went in search of his parents, only to suffer the same tragic fate as his mother and father after inhaling the highly toxic fumes.

Anastasia’s mother Iraida, 68, called a neighbour to say there was something suspicious and to plead for help.

But before assistance arrived, she also went into the cellar, suffocated from the gas, and collapsed and died like the others, say police.

It is understood that as she went in, she left the door open, allowing the fumes to disperse.

When Maria entered the cellar, she found the bodies of her whole family on the cellar floor.

The shocking case was at Laishevo, a town near Kazan, in the Russian republic of Tatarstan on the Volga River.

Relatives and friends are appealing for cash to support the girl.

A memorial service for Professor Chelyshev was held in the marble hall of  Kazan Federal University, where he was head of the department of civil and business law.

The picture Vladimir Putin wants to ban: Police seize painting of Russian president in women’s underwear from St Petersburg gallery claiming it is ‘illegal’

Russian President Vladimir Putin brushing the hair of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev1Police have seized a painting of Russia’s president Vladamir Putin wearing women’s underwear from a gallery, saying the satirical display had broken the law.

The painting entitled ‘Travesty’ by Konstantin Altunin, shows President Putin wearing a tight-fitting slip and brushing the hair of Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, who is wearing knickers and a bra.

Police swooped on the Muzei Vlasti (Museum of Authorities) in St. Petersburg on the night of August 26 confiscating several art installations, including ‘Travesty’ which are to be checked for extremist propaganda.

A picture of the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill I, with his torso covered in tattoos, and two others poking fun at lawmakers who have backed legislation banning so-called gay propaganda, were also confiscated, gallery staff said.
The police service said it had taken paintings from the gallery – based in two rooms of a flat – late on Monday after receiving reports they were illegal.

It gave no further detail but Russia does have a law against insulting authorities – an offence that carries a maximum one-year prison term.

Gallery owner Alexander Donskoy said the officers had also shut down his establishment and gave him no explanation for the removal of paintings from the exhibition, titled ‘Leaders’.

Russia Backs UN Probe of Alleged Chemical Attack

sergey lavrovThe Russian Foreign Ministry is calling for an independent probe by United Nations experts into what Syrian rebels alleged was a chemical weapons attack by government forces on the outskirts of Damascus.

The statement released on Friday said that Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry had discussed the situation by telephone on Thursday, and concluded that they had a “mutual interest” in calling for the U.N. investigation.

The statement said Russia had called for Syrian President Bashar Assad’s embattled government to cooperate with an investigation, but questions remained about the willingness of the opposition, “which must secure safe access of the mission to the location of the incident.”

Russia has been one of Assad’s key allies in the international arena.

Lady Gaga, Madonna Facing Punishment in Russia

gty_gty_gaga_madonna_kb_130804_16x9_608Pop stars Lady Gaga and Madonna are facing punishment in Russia after authorities determined they violated their visas when they held concerts there last year.

Technically, the artists were not allowed to work in Russia on their tourist visas, but experts say it appears the visa warning is a veiled attempt punish the pop stars for their vocal support of gay rights in Russia.

The investigation into their visas came at the urging of a lawmaker who has spearheaded Russia’s anti-gay campaign.

During concerts in St. Petersburg last year, both Lady Gaga and Madonna denounced the city’s harsh anti-gay law from the stage.

“Tonight, this is my house Russia. You can be gay in my house,” Lady Gaga said during her performance in December.

A few months earlier, Madonna made similar comments during her concert.

“Gay people here and all around the world have the same rights,” she said.

Those comments have landed the pop stars in hot water in Russia. The two have been accused of spreading what the law calls “gay propaganda” under St. Petersburg’s anti-gay law.

Russia hasn’t announced any plans to prosecute the pop stars, but if convicted they could face steep fines or even be banned from entering the country.

So far there has been no response yet from either Lady Gaga or Madonna.

Russian lawmaker admits any gay athletes or spectators at the 2014 Winter Olympics will be arrested for ‘promoting homosexuality’

The Russian parliament issued a ban on spreading gay 'propaganda'Openly gay athletes and supporters at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games may face arrest, according to a Russian lawmaker.

Politician Vitaly Milonov said the terms of the law could not be suspended or selectively enforced during the Olympic Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) previously claimed Russia had assured the safety of athletes and supporters.

The IOC told the Windy City Times earlier this month: ‘The International Olympic Committee is clear that sport is a human right and should be available to all regardless of race, sex or sexual orientation.

The Games themselves should be open to all, free of discrimination, and that applies to spectators, officials, media and of course athletes.

‘We would oppose in the strongest terms any move that would jeopardise this principle.’

The controversial ‘gay propaganda’ law bans displays of ‘non-traditional sexual behaviour’ in public or in front of under-18s.

The law allows the government to detain homosexual or sympathetic foreigners for up to 14 days.

They could then face expulsion from the country.

Spread-eagled against the wall and marched off single-file: How Russia deals with illegal immigrants

Immigration officers and police yesterday raided Tyoply Stan market in Moscow looking for illegal immigrants4Captured and humiliated, these pictures show how Russia is cracking down on its illegal immigrants.

Police officers raided Moscow’s Tyoply Stan market yesterday to detain dozens of suspected illegal immigrants.

Russian authorities are currently holding a number of large scale operations to identify those staying in the country illegally so they can be expelled.

After rounding up the men, the police and immigration officers then displayed their no-nonsense approach in front of the cameras.

The men were spreadeagled against a large police bus, with their clothing searched by a police officer.

Others were made to wait, standing with their hands behind their necks as officers looked on.

Eventually, when they were all processed, they were frog-marched single-file onto the bus, each made to hold onto the man in front’s shoulders.
It is believed that out of 11 million migrants currently living in Russia, four million do so illegally.

Speaking at the beginning of this month, Dmitry Demidenko, from Russian Federal Migration Service, said:

‘As of June 28, 2013, 11,193,289 immigrants are living in Russia. And 3.76 million out of the whole number live here illegally.

‘We are searching for them and expel from the country as we find them.’

New Royal baby ‘is another blood-sucking British monarch’ whose birth should not be celebrated, says Russian politician

Vladimir ZhirinovskyThe Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s newborn son will ‘suck the blood’ of Russia in the mid-21st century and should therefore not be celebrated, a controversial Russian politician declared today.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the leader of the nationalist Liberal Democrat Party, declared ‘I don’t care about the heir’ before accusing the British monarchy of ‘destroying our state’.

The outspoken politician made his attention-grabbing comments in an interview with the state-run newspaper Rio Novosti.

Quoted in the International Business Times, he said : ‘The British monarchy… destroyed our state.  Today, our opposition activists are there, so that’s why there’s no joy.

‘That is why the birth of another British monarch, who will suck our blood somewhere in the mid-21st century, cannot bring us any kind of happiness.’

However Russian’s official response was more positive, with the Kremlin congratulating the Queen and welcoming her new great-grandson.

The British and Russian royal families are linked via King George V, who was first cousin of Tsar Nicholas II, whom some blame for the downfall of the Romanov dynasty in 1917.

British tourists killed by helicopter in Arctic fishing expedition ‘after its blades struck them during take-off’

Two British anglers on an ‘ultimate’ fishing trip in the remote Russian Arctic were killed in a helicopter crash yesterday.

The men and their Russian guide died when they were hit by the rotor blades of their chartered aircraft.

Both Britons were said to be in their late sixties and were on a custom salmon fishing trip to the Kola Peninsula, 90 miles from the port city of Murmansk.

They were named by Russian officials but the Foreign Office would not confirm their identities until their families were informed.

As the craft attempted to take off, it banked suddenly to one side and its rotor blades hit the men where they stood with their guide, Alexander Tushnikov.

The pilot, said to have 25 years’ flying experience, survived the crash with injuries.

Lines of inquiry are likely to include whether the helicopter was caught by a sudden gust of wind, causing it to tilt, or if it suffered a mechanical failure.

The Kola Peninsula was previously a top secret area, home to the Red October submarine base and the Soviet navy’s northern fleet.

Now it is known as the ultimate destination for high-end fishing tours for Atlantic salmon, attracting anglers from around the world.

Operators say the region has not been overfished like many popular salmon rivers and that competent anglers can catch more than 100 salmon in a week, with some fish weighing up to 40lb.

The peak season runs from June to August, when the area north of the Arctic Circle enjoys 24-hour daylight.

Outside the season, the rivers are frozen for three or four months a year.

Russia’s Bolshoi Theatre suffers new tragedy after violinist dies falling into orchestra pit

Russia's Bolshoi TheatreA senior violinist at Russia’s Bolshoi Theatre has died following a freak accident when he fell from the stage into the orchestra pit.

Viktor Sedov, 65, who had performed at the world-famous theatre in Moscow for four decades, died in hospital as a result of his injuries following the fall on Tuesday.

Bolshoi spokesman Katerina Novikova said Mr Sedov, who played in the second violins, was a much-loved member of the theatre and was known for his ‘sense of humour and extraordinary erudition’.

She told the AFP news agency: ‘Viktor Sedov, who had worked almost 40 years at the Bolshoi, fell into the orchestra pit on Tuesday and died on Wednesday in hospital as a result of his injuries.’
In January this year, an artistic director at the Bolshoi nearly lost his sight when he had acid thrown in his face outside his Moscow home.

Sergei Filin, 42, suffered third-degree burns to his face and neck in the attack.

However dancers and staff at the Bolshoi later suggested that Mr Filin may have staged the attack himself.

Last week the theater’s director general Anatoly Iksanov was fired and replaced by Vladimir Urin, who previously headed Moscow’s Stanislavsky Musical Theatre.

Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky said only that the 61-year old Iksanov, who led the Bolshoi for nearly 13 years, was dismissed because of a ‘difficult situation at the theatre’.

Snowden Submits Asylum Request

A Russian lawyer says that National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden has asked for temporary asylum in Russia.

Anatoly Kucherena said that Snowden submitted the asylum request Tuesday to Russia’s Federal Migration Service. The service had no immediate comment.

He said Snowden made the move following their meeting at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport.

Snowden has been stuck in Sheremetyevo’s transit zone since he arrived from Hong Kong on June 23. He said Friday at a meeting with Russian rights activists and public figures that he would seek at least temporary refuge in Russia until he could fly to one of the Latin American nations that have offered him asylum.

Russia to use first FLOATING nuclear power plant in just three years to provide energy for hard-to-reach regions

floating nuclear power plant1Russia will begin to operate the world’s first floating nuclear power plant in just three years time.

The specially-made ship with a nuclear power plant on-board will provide energy, heat and drinking water to relatively inaccessible areas of the vast country.

The director of Russia’s largest shipbuilders, the Baltic Plant, announced that the unique ship should be operational by 2016 at the 6th International Naval Show in St Petersburg.

The first ship will be called Akademik Lomonosov and is intended to be the first of small fleet of floating nuclear plants in Russia.

The Akademik Lomonosov will weigh 21,500 tons and have a crew of 69 people. But it will not have a propulsion system so will have to be towed to the location where it is needed, according to global news service, RT.

It will have two modified KLT-40 reactors that will be able to provide enough energy for a city with 200,000 people.

The floating power plants will be able to be modified and be used as a desalination plant. This means that the ship could produce a staggering 240,000 cubic metres of fresh water every day.

The ship builder insists that the process of fuel enrichment on the floating power station complies with the International Atomic Energy Agency’s regulations.

The firm claims that its floating power station is safe for the environment as it does not release any hazardous substances while it is operating.

Bolshoi theatre chief is fired after Russian government loses patience over ongoing scandals

Anatoly IksanovThe chief of Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater was fired today after months of infighting following an acid attack on its artistic director that has stained the reputation of one of the legendary names in world ballet.

The departure of Anatoly Iksanov, the theater’s director general, comes just a few weeks after the ouster of his rival, principal dancer Nikolai Tsiskaridze.

Both men have enjoyed the backing of senior government officials and Kremlin-connected tycoons, and their successive dismissals appear to reflect high-level intrigue and score-settling.

Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky said only that the 61-year old Iksanov, who led the Bolshoi for nearly 13 years, was dismissed because of a ‘difficult situation at the theatre’.

He told a news conference that the head of Moscow’s No. 2 ballet company, the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater, would succeed Iksanov.

The Bolshoi has been shrouded in scandal for years but a fierce conflict erupted in January after an assailant threw acid into the face of Bolshoi artistic director Sergei Filin.

The decision to purge both men also appears to reflect the Kremlin’s dismay over the infighting that has dented the nation’s prestige.

Vladimir Urin, the new Bolshoi chief, is widely respected in Russia’s theater world. He sought to quell passions, voicing hope for a ‘calm and business-like’ climate and saying that he doesn’t want any ‘revolutions’.

As if it died yesterday: Amazingly preserved woolly mammoth found frozen in Siberia after 39,000 YEARS goes on display in Tokyo (and it’s still woolly!)

Սիբիրում հայտնաբերված 39,000 տարեկան սառած մամոնտը ցուցադրվել է Տոկիոյում (տեսանյութ)A female woolly mammoth, which was found frozen in Russia in May, has gone on display in an exhibition hall in Tokyo.

The 39,000-year-old mammoth will be on display at the hall in Yokohama in the south of the Japanese city from 13 July until September 16.

Visitors and tourists will be able to come and view the extinct creature that was discovered in an ice tomb in the New Siberian Islands, or Novosibirsk Islands, earlier this year.

Parts of the carcass are especially well preserved because they remained entirely frozen for thousands of years.

However, the upper torso and two legs, which were found in the soil rather than the ice, were gnawed by prehistoric and modern predators and almost did not survive.

Visitors to the hall will also be able to clearly see the mammoth’s snout, legs and torso.

The scientists who found the mammoth in May were also able to extract a blood sample from the beast.

It was the first ever well-preserved sample of blood from a woolly mammoth and could be used to recreate the extinct species.

Preserved muscle tissue was also found from the creature, aged between 50 and 60 when she died, according to the Russian team who made the discovery on islands off the northern coast of Siberia.

Semyon Grigoriev, head of the Museum of Mammoths of the Institute of Applied Ecology of the North at the North Eastern Federal University told The Siberian Times: The hope is that at least one living cell of the mammoth was preserved ‘although even with such well-preserved remains, this may not be the case.’

The samples were taken for study to Yakutsk, capital of the Republic of Sakha, also known as Yakutia, the largest region in the Russian Federation.

The carcass weighing around one tonne was then moved to the Siberian mainland and was kept in ice storage before being taken to Tokyo.

Shocking footage shows Russian doctor caught viciously beating defenceless heart patient who died soon after in intensive care

An experienced doctor was caught on camera twice viciously beating a heart patient as he lay tied to an intensive care bed.

The defenceless patient died soon afterwards and the medic, Andrey Votyakov, blamed his frenzied attack on exhaustion after a busy 24-hour shift.

Police are now probing the Russian doctor – who previous had an unblemished record – for his cruel assault on the middle-aged man soon after he underwent surgery at a hospital in Perm, in the Urals.

The shocking 30-second video clearly shows a verbal argument between a doctor and the tethered patient at the Federal Cardo-Surgery Centre in the industrial city.

Then the doctor hits out, striking the patient first on the head and soon afterwards in the area of his heart.

He was evidently unaware that his brutal attack – which has now cost him his job – was being filmed on a camera focused on the patient’s bed.

‘It was a hard day after a 24 hour shift,’ claimed Votyakov, chief of the prestigious hospital’s anaesthesiology and intensive care department, after the footage went viral on the Russian web.

‘As soon as I came into the room with my team he started to call me various derogative names.  And I just got blown away by it.
‘We had spent so much time with his very complicated case to help him recover and he said not a single word of gratitude.

‘And then the chronic tiredness added to it. I got carried away, and I punched him several times at the presence of my colleagues.’

The camera does not show any other doctors or nurses seeking to intervene.

‘We continued the treatment after the incident, but sadly the patient died.

‘I am very sorry for what happened and I want to apologise first of all to the patient himself and his family.’

The incident was in February this year but the footage was only recently made public.

The patient was a man aged ‘over 45’ from Kirov region. There has been no comment so far from the patient’s family.

Votyakov’s boss, Sergey Sukhanov, announced today that he was firing the violent medic.

There were predictions that the doctor would face jail and ruin over his attack, though it is so far unclear what charges he may face.

Russia’s Putin Signs Law Limiting Adoption by Gays

Vladimir PutinPresident Vladimir Putin has signed a bill that sharply limits the adoption of Russian children by people from countries that allow same-sex marriage.

The new law prohibits adoption by same-sex foreign couples whose homeland recognizes their union as marriage, as well as by single people or unmarried couples from those countries.

A Kremlin statement said the measure is intended to guarantee children a “harmonious” upbringing and protect them from “complexes, emotional suffering and stress.”

The bill signed Wednesday is the latest move by Russia to buck the Western trend toward greater acceptance of homosexuality. On Sunday, Putin approved a ban on giving children any information about gays.

The adoption bill further shrinks the possibilities for 600,000 Russian children without parental custody. Last year, Russia banned all adoptions by Americans.
