Davit Tonoyan held separate meetings with the UNHCR representative in Armenia Mr.Damtew Dessalegne

դավիթ-տոնոյանOn August 23, First Deputy Minister of Defense Davit Tonoyan held separate meetings with the UNHCR representative in Armenia Mr.Damtew Dessalegne and with the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Armenia, Mr.Lorenzo Caraffi.

During both meetings parties discussed issues regarding the Armenian POW Hakob Injighulyan. D. Tonoyan particularly expressed his concern over the fact, that the Azerbaijani authorities continue to violate principles of international law with regard to Hakob Injighulyan and that competent international humanitarian organizations, human rights defenders and international community have not shown any reaction to the lack of restraint on part of Azerbaijan is rather perplexing.

Alleged “interviews” with Hakob Injighulyan recently recorded and broadcasted by the Azerbaijani authorities-which again testify to the informational war against Armenia on a rather very primitive level and aim to hinder the process of Injighulyan’s repatriation – have not been condemned by a single international organization. It is obvious that Injighulyan is forced to come up with controversial statements under psychological intimidation and most probably under the threat of physical abuse which has become a common way of acting for the Azerbaijani authorities under wide-spread impunity. Hakob Injighulyan’s request for resettling him in a 3rd country should be taken into consideration if he was assured  of the right  to express his wish in a free, unhindered and informed  manner and by no means under constant pressure .

He also reiterated the pledge of the Armenian authorities not to subject Injighulyan to criminal prosecution in view of the absence of corpus dilecti in his case and informed aboutintentions to ask UNHCR to use its good offices when they are engaged and inform Injighulyan duly of this commitment.

It is noteworthy that no repatriated POW of Armenian nationality has been subject to such prosecution with most of themtaking up their service in their homeland.

It was also said, that  the Armenian side believes international humanitarian organizations should engage themselves to a maximum extent facilitating the prompt repatriation of Injighulyan and will object to any attempt ofhis resettlement in a 3rd country considering them unjustified and groundless.

Unidentified 13ft-long sea monster with horns washes up on beach in Spain and has marine biologists stumped

four-metres long creatureWith its horns, long white body and slithery form, it looks like a mythical beast.

But this four-metre long horned creature is only too real – as the stench from its decomposing flesh proved.

The mysterious sea creature was washed ashore in Villaricos, Spain – and tests are being done on the carcass to determine what it is.

An unfortunate swimmer stumbled across the head before coming across the rest of the body, the Huffington Post reported.
Civil Protection Coordinator Maria Sanchez said: ‘We have no idea what it can be, but it smelled bad, because it was so badly decomposed’, Digital Spy reported.

The extent of the deterioration of the creature meant most of the remains had to be buried for safety reasons.

Several theories have been suggested about what the creature is – ranging from it being a type of shark to it being an oar fish, but researchers are still examining it.

The hacker who broke into Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook page will get a $12,000 reward from online donors

Mark ZuckerbergThe hacker who broke into Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook Timeline to expose a security lapse will be awarded nearly $12,000 from an online crowdsourced campaign.

The GoFundMe campaign has raised $11,741 for Khalil Shreateh, of Palestine, who claims he was forced to hack into Zuckerberg’s page to bring attention to the security vulnerability because Facebook had ignored his earlier warnings.

The bug that Shreateh found allowed him to post on the Timelines of people who weren’t his Facebook friends.

Shreateh first contacted the Facebook security team after proving the glitch was real by writing on the wall of a friend of the Facebook founder.

But instead of thanking him and fixing the issue, Facebook said it wasn’t a bug.

Undeterred, Shreateh used the glitch to hack his way onto Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook page.

‘Sorry for breaking your privacy,’ he wrote in a since removed post to Zuckerberg, ‘I had no other choice…after all the reports I sent to Facebook team.’

Minutes later, his pleas were answered. Facebook contacted him demanding to know how he’d hacked their bosses personal page.

‘We fixed this bug on Thursday,’ wrote Matt Jones from Facebook’s security team in a Saturday post on Hacker News.

Local traffic police chief Captain Muhammad Chaniago said its brakes apparently malfunctioned.

He said the bus hit a small car and crashed through the wall of a roadside building before both vehicles fell up to 26ft into the river in Cisarua.

At least 18 people were confirmed dead and 40 injured, said the local disaster management agency.

Most of the dead were killed instantly, and those with injuries were rushed to two nearby hospitals, Chaniago said.

Road accidents are common in Indonesia due to poor safety standards and infrastructure.

Egypt Floats Genocide Recognition As Trial Balloon to Warn Turkey

Հարութ ՍասունյանBy Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

The Arab Spring in Egypt has turned into a hellish summer with countless casualties.

Ever since the Egyptian military deposed President Mohamed Morsi, one particular foreign leader has been screaming the loudest, demanding his immediate reinstatement. That bellicose leader is Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Prime Minister of Turkey, a staunch supporter of his fellow Islamist Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt’s new leaders, backed by large segments of the population, were infuriated especially after Erdogan severely criticized the overthrow of Pres. Morsi and the killing of hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood protesters. Using extremely harsh language, the Turkish Prime Minister condemned the Egyptian military for “carrying out a massacre with its soldiers, police officers, [and] heavy artillery.” Ironically, Erdogan called anyone who keeps silent in the face of injustice, “a voiceless devil.”

There is no question that a human tragedy is unfolding in Egypt and becoming more critical with each passing day. While no one can remain indifferent to the killing and maiming of civilians, the Prime Minister of Turkey is the last person on earth who should be taking such a self-righteous attitude. Anyone who has blood on his hands has no right to demonize others! One does not have to go back into history and recall the genocides committed by Erdogan’s forefathers against Armenians, Assyrians, and Greeks. Just a couple of months ago, the Turkish Prime Minister’s own hands were soaked in blood when he proudly acknowledged that he ordered the police to open fire on unarmed demonstrators in Istanbul, killing five people, blinding 11, and injuring 8,000 others. Thus, Erdogan has been stripped of all moral authority to lecture anyone else on democracy and civil rights.

Erdogan’s repeated meddling in Egypt’s internal affairs and his staunch support for Pres. Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood escalated the hostilities between the two countries to such a degree that Egypt and Turkey ended up recalling their respective Ambassadors, further disrupting their diplomatic relations. The worsening tension has jeopardized the $2 billion Turkish investment in Egypt and frozen the activities of 300 Turkish businesses in that country.

What a difference a year makes! In May of 2012, when I was visiting Egypt on a lecture tour, a local newspaper refused to publish that part of my interview dealing with the Armenian Genocide. I was informed that given the close relationship between the two Islamist nations, it would be impossible to print anything against Turkey.

Curiously, after Pres. Morsi’s unceremonious departure from power, a series of articles appeared in scores of Egyptian newspapers, detailing the history of the Armenian Genocide, demanding that Turkey pay restitution to the survivors, and calling on Erdogan to acknowledge his country’s criminal past.

To top it all, a surprising twitter message was posted on August 17 by Adly Mansour, Egypt’s Interim President, announcing that his country’s “UN representative tomorrow will sign the international document recognizing the Armenian massacres which were committed by the Turkish army, causing the deaths of one million people.”

Even though Egyptian and Turkish newspapers widely reported the twitter message attributed to the Egyptian President, we were unable to independently confirm its authenticity. However, it is clear that the current Egyptian government and media are intent on using the Armenian Genocide as a way of getting back at Erdogan’s heavy-handed interference in their domestic affairs.

Understandably, most Armenians would be displeased that the victimization of their ancestors is being exploited in a political tug of war between the two countries. Yet, unfortunately, this is politics as usual. If Egypt’s new leaders find it expedient to recognize the Armenian Genocide, this would be a welcome change. It is better to recognize the Genocide, regardless of political motives, than not to recognize it for all the wrong reasons! After all, no one can expect the Egyptian government to take a position on an issue, if it is contrary to its own national interests. In this regard, Egypt is no different from other countries, including the United States and Israel, which periodically dangle acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide as a Damoclean Sword over the heads of Turkish leaders.

The final decision on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide depends on whatever concessions Cairo is expecting from Ankara. If Egypt, the most populous Arab state, recognizes the Armenian Genocide, that would deal a devastating blow to the Turkish government’s frantic efforts to counter the worldwide commemorations of the Genocide Centennial in 2015.

The real life Rapunzel: World record holder says her 55ft long dreadlocks could paralyse her but she will never cut them

Asha MandelaShe is the real life Rapunzel with 55ft long dreadlocks that are longer than a bus.

Despite being warned by doctors that her hair that weighs three stone could paralyse her, Asha Mandela said she will never cut them.

The mother-of-one from Atlanta, Georgia, said: ‘My hair has become part of me. It is my life. I will never cut it.

‘Cutting it would be equivalent to suicide. It would be like being a zombie.’

Mrs Mandela, 47, holds the Guinness World Record for the longest dreadlocks.

It takes two days to wash and dry her hair, which weighs the same as a reception-age child, and is even heavier when wet.

It can also get easily trapped in doors or snag on bushes.

But Mrs Mandela worries that ‘someone with a hair fetish’ will cut off a lock of her hair when she is not looking.

Doctors have also asked her to consider cutting her hair for health reasons, including the risk of bacterial infection.

But their main concern is the weight.

She said: ‘The doctors seem to think I have a curvature of my spine and that it’s the length and the weight of my hair that’s making me curve.

Mrs Mandela, who is happily married to her third husband, was born in Trinidad and Tobago.

She began growing her hair 25 years ago following a ‘spiritual calling’.

Iraq Hangs 17, Mostly for ‘Terrorism’

Iraq executes convicted terroristsIraq executed 17 prisoners on Monday, all but one convicted for “terrorism,” shrugging off calls from international human rights organizations to reconsider the use of capital punishment.

In a statement posted on its website, the Justice Ministry said authorities had executed 15 Iraqis and an Egyptian convicted of terrorism for “carrying out crimes against the Iraqi people.” The other prisoner was convicted of another unspecified criminal offense.

Two of those hanged were women, it added, without saying when the executions were carried out. This year, a total of 67 people have been executed in the country.

According to London-based Amnesty International, Iraq was ranked fourth among the top five executioners in the world in 2011, after China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the U.S.

Ferry sinks after collision off Philippines; 31 dead, over 170 unaccounted for

Philippines passenger ferry1Rescue crews have found 31 bodies, and are looking for 172 other people, after the ferry they were on collided Friday with a cargo ship in waters between southern Philippine islands, a Coast Guard official said.

Lt. Elgen Gregorio, from the Philippine Coast Guard, told CNN on Saturday morning that more than 600 people had been rescued. At that time, authorities were still looking for survivors.

The incident occurred around 9 p.m. Friday in the Mactan Channel about 2 miles northwest of Cebu City, the capital of Cebu province.

The passenger ship — MV St. Thomas Aquinas — was coming from nearby Butuan City and the cargo ship — the Sulpicio, which had about 20 people aboard — was leaving Cebu for the province of Davao in Mindanao.

The passenger ferry sank, but not before sending out a distress call heard by Coast Guard officials.

At least 44 people were being treated at one hospital in Cebu.

The incident recalls one of the worst maritime disasters in world history dating to December 20, 1987, also off the Philippines.

Between 1,700 and more than 4,000 people were killed when the ferry Dona Paz collided with the tanker MT Victor. The number of casualties has varied; many claim the Dona Paz was extremely overcrowded.

ANCA EASTERN REGION LOCAL COMMITTEES MEET WITH HOUSE REPRESENTATIVES DURING AUGUST RECESS

Runyan_district (1)Mount Laurel, NJ — The Armenian National Committee of America Eastern Region (ANCA-ER) has been voicing the values and concerns of Armenian Americans with U.S. representatives in their district offices while Congress is on August recess.

The ANC of New Jersey was accompanied by Michelle Hagopian, ANCA Eastern Region Executive Director, to a meeting with Rep. Jon Runyan (R-NJ-3) on Tuesday, August 13, 2013. The meeting was at his Mount Laurel district office in southern New Jersey.

“These district meetings are vital to the ebb and flow of the ANCA-ER’s activity. Even though we connect with representatives in Washington, we lay the foundation locally in the district. We appreciate the cooperation of elected officials like Rep. Runyan for meeting with our activists, who are always willing to voice their concerns and advance the Armenian cause,” said Hagopian.

Andrew and Madonna Kzirian, two constituents of Rep. Runyan, attended the meeting and brought a few pamphlets and books on the Armenian Genocide as a gift to the Congressman. House Resolution 227, the Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Resolution, was a main point of discussion in the meeting as the ANCA-ER works to increase the number of cosponsors on the resolution.

“I think the 3rd district community should be pleased that we’re meeting with elected officials at the federal level and we’re putting a face on the topic of the Genocide. Even if a Congressman isn’t up to speed on our issues, we’re making them aware that constituents are concerned about justice,” Andrew Kzirian said.

Hagopian also accompanied Vatche Kaloustian of the ANC of Pennsylvania to a meeting with the office of Rep. Patrick Meehan (R-PA-7) on Wednesday, August 14. The discussion ranged from the history of the Genocide to the self-determination and democratic nature of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh, which included a briefing on the history of the region and the aggression by Azerbaijan against Armenians.

In the Midwest, the newly formed ANC of Missouri has been hard at work getting to know their elected officials as well. On Wednesday, August 7, ANC-MO activists Jake Varadian and John Donjoian met with the office of Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO-2) to cultivate a relationship with the Congresswoman.

The pair discussed the St. Louis metropolitan area community, including the Granite City, Ill., Armenian Apostolic church, St. Gregory the Illuminator. The fact that the St. Louis area has a sizeable population of Baku Armenians provided a solid framework to discuss Nagorno Karabakh and the far-reaching roots it has in Missouri and Illinois. ANC-MO also gave personal accounts of their familial ties to the Genocide, emphasized the importance of culture that Armenian Americans bring to the area, and urged Rep. Wagner to push for more trade and aid to Armenia.

“Rep. Wagner’s office was genuinely touched by our personal accounts and our willingness to discuss the issues important to the Armenians of Missouri’s 2nd Congressional district,” Donjoian said.

ANCA-ER has other meetings scheduled in the district for this month and into September, while some local ANCs such as the ANC of Rhode Island have met with their representatives already and have made plans to meet with their Senators before the recess is over.

U.S. Congress returns to session in Washington, DC on September 9.

Naked dash for cash! Streakers run through zoo to help protect the last 300 Sumatran tigers left in the wild

Sponsored runners take part in a naked charity streakIt was certainly a wild way to raise money – animal lovers flashed for cash.

Hundreds of fundraisers earned their stripes by running naked around a zoo to raise money for a rare subspecies of tiger.

The sponsored streak saw 300 brave runners get back to nature by stripping off to make their way through ZSL London Zoo in the after-hours event, watched by their supporters and some rather confused animals.

Wearing nothing more than shoes, tiger masks and tiger ears, they ran a 300m course through the centre of the attraction, with some exhibitionists choosing to complete several laps of the circuit.

Streak for Tigers, named after the collective noun for the animal, raised some £60,000 which will be ploughed into conservation work to protect the Sumatran tigers, of which only 300 remain in the wild.

Is this the world’s worst zoo? Visitors’ fury after staff in China try to pass off Tibetan mastiff as a lion and a mongrel as a leopard

Tibetan mastiffA China zoo has been forced to apologise after it tried to pass off a dog as a lion.

Angry visitors to the People’s Park in Luohe, Henan province, complained when the ‘African lion’ started barking.

Zoo staff said they had pretended the Tibetan mastiff was a lion because they could not afford the real thing, local media reported.

The state-run Beijing Youth Daily claims the zoo commonly replaced exotic animals with common species.

Elsewhere in the zoo, visitors found a mongrel dog in the Timber wolf’s cage and another pooch posing as a leopard in the big cat enclosure.

Then in the reptile house, keepers had placed two giant sea cucumbers which they were trying to pass off as snakes.

Mr Liu Suya, chief of the park’s animal department, insisted the zoo did have a lion but it had been taken to a breeding facility.

As for the dog that was in its cage, Mr Liu said it belonged to a employee and had been put there ‘for safety reasons.’

A spokesman for the zoo said: ‘We’re doing our best in tough economic times.

‘If anyone is unhappy with our displays we will give back their money.’

Is this the world’s oldest man? Bolivian herder’s records show he was born in 1890

Carmelo Flores Laura2A Bolivian man born in 1890 – and still going strong – has been revealed as the oldest living person ever recorded, it was reported today.

Carmelo Flores Laura turned 123 last month, according to Bolivia’s civil registry.

Yet the herder, from the mountain village of Frasquicia, 50 miles outside the capital La Paz, is still healthy, walks without a stick and doesn’t wear glasses, according to reports.

The native Aymara, who has three children, 16 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren, was 24 when World War I broke out and 62 when young Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne.

Mr Laura, who lost his wife ten years ago, told Bolivia’s Rede Uno TV station that he believes the secret to a long life is taking daily long walks, and never eating pasta or sugar.

The Bolivian’s biblical age means he would easily overtake the current oldest living person, 115-year-old Japanese woman Misao Okawa.

Professor builds dream mountain villa where he can get away from it all. Only problem is, it’s on top of a Beijing apartment block (and the people underneath aren’t too happy)

Rocky style villa on the roof of a tower block, Haidian, China - 12 Aug 2013A Chinese man has spent six years building his dream mountaintop villa – on top of a Beijing apartment block.

Eccentric Professor Zhang Lin shifted tons of rubble and rock onto the roof of the building to construct the outrageous home which looks like it has been carved from a mountainside.

The property even has a rocky mountain garden, complete with rubble and shrubbery.

But his distraught neighbours are less than impressed with the project and fear the building is about to collapse.

The rooftop home, which never received planning approval, has caused cracks to appear in his neighbours’ ceilings and walls while some have had to put up with leaks from broken pipes and drains.

They have also been forced to live with the noise and disturbance caused from the building work.

One resident said their apartment is constantly flooded while another described the academic as a ‘menace’.

Mr Lin could now be ordered to tear down his mountain penthouse if it is deemed unsafe.

‘It has come to our attention that Professor Zhang did not apply for permission for this structure. So unless he can prove it is safe, it will have to come down,’ explained an city official.

Close shave! Terrorists kidnap Pakistani father and threaten to kill him because he refuses to shave off his 30-inch moustache

Malik Amir Mohammad Khan AfridiA Pakistani father has told how he faces death threats and has been driven into hiding – because of his 30ins moustache.

Islamist extremists were so infuriated by Malik Amir Mohammad Khan Afridi’s facial hair they kidnapped the businessman and held him in a cave for a month until he shaved.

But despite his clash with the militants over his prized whiskers – said to signify virility and prosperity – the father-of-ten, from Peshawar, Pakistan, has now grown it back, vowing never to be bowed by the thugs again.

Mr Afridi said: ‘I don’t like smoking. I’m not fond of snuff, or drinking. This is the only choice in my life. I’d even sacrifice food, but not the moustache. It’s my life. It’s not part of my life. It is my life.

‘People give me a lot of respect. It’s my identity.’

He now spends 30 minutes a day caressing and trimming the moustache. The costs of coconut oil and soap used to maintain it comes to an eye-watering £100 a month.

But despite the cost, the death threats, the constant fear of attack and having to spend long periods away from his family, it is all worth it, he insists.

He has now been forced to leave his family for long periods of time and move south to Faisalabad where he feels safer.

He told The Independent: ‘I want to live, that is why I want to get out of Pakistan.

‘My first choice would be an Islamic country such as Dubai.

‘But I also willing to go to countries such as the US, Canada or Britain. I would like to appeal to the British government to help me.’

Thieves in Venezuela hacking off women’s ponytails in street to sell on as $500 hair extensions

Robbers in the Venezuelan city of Maracaibo are now targeting women's hair1While most people worry about being mugged for their phones or handbags, criminals in the Venezuelan city of Maracaibo have their sights set on something a little more unusual.

According to local news sources, a gang known as the ‘piranhas’ is stealing women’s hair at gun point.

The criminals then sell on the stolen locks to salons for use as hair extensions, according to Venezuelan digital newspaper Informe 21.

Robbers target women with long, straight hair as this type is most in demand for extensions. They force the women tie their hair into ponytails then hack them off.

It’s a profitable business: local hairdressers can charge clients up to £322 ($500) to weave real locks into their hair, according to CNN.

Speaking to Globovision news, Jhonatan Morales, a stylist in Venezuela, explained that hair extensions are hot property – demand for the service has increased by 30 per cent.

He said that his salon refuses to buy the hair from street vendors because they don’t know where it comes from.

The mayor of Maracaibo, Eveling de Rosales, has addressed the issue, saying that security is being upped and that ‘men and women were being placed to guard and avoid this happening again.’

Found after 40 years: Man who went missing with his son in the Vietnamese jungle when his mother and two of his children were killed in a bomb at their home

Ho Van Lang, 41, has been living in the jungle of Vietnam since he was two years oldA father and son have been found living in the jungle of Vietnam four decades after they went missing during the country’s war with the U.S.

Ho Van Thanh and his son Ho Van Lang apparently fled their home village 40 years ago after a bomb killed three members of their family.

They were discovered by locals looking for firewood in deep forest in the Tay Tra district of Quang Ngai province.

Yesterday authorities confirmed that the men were Thanh, 82, and 41-year-old Lang.

The pair survived by foraging fruit and cassava from the forest and planting corn.

When the foragers saw the two ‘jungle men’ from a distance acting abnormally, they alerted local authorities.

Officials set up a team to track them down, and found them yesterday after a five-hour search.

The father could speak a little of the minority Cor language, but the son knew only a few words.

The pair are now undergoing medical check-ups as a first step to being reintegrated into mainstream society.

An oeuf is enough: French farmers smash 100,000 eggs a day in protest at EU directive to protect hens

French egg producers throw crates of eggs5Furious French farmers are smashing hundreds of thousands of fresh eggs in a protest at cripplingly low prices they blame on the European Union.

In bizarre scenes in the northwest region of Brittany, piles of mangled shell, yolk and albumen are being dumped on main roads next door to supermarkets.

‘The mess is terrible and soon it will start to smell very badly indeed,’ said one shopworker. ‘It’s a strange protest, but one which will create a huge amount of publicity.’

Poultry farmers say they have been forced to start destroying their stock because of overproduction in the EU.
They insist that they are barely making any profit at all because of a strict EU directive which came into force in January aimed at protecting the well-being of hens.

Many of the protestors have been wearing masks as they take the thousands of ‘We will continue to destroy 100,000 eggs a day until Sunday,’ a spokesman for the protest group told AFP, France’s national news agency.

He threatened that radical action would increase in intensity ‘with inevitable collateral damage’ if the group’s demands were not met.

One hundred thousand eggs a day equates to five per cent of he number of eggs being produced each day by the farmers involved in the dispute.

They want France’s entire egg production to be reduced by five per cent to help raise prices, and called on President Francois Hollande’s government to help with the smashing.
