Պակիստան, երկրաշարժ

At least two people were killed and more than 40 others were injured in a series of relatively minor earthquakes in southern Pakistan early Friday, the country’s state-run news agency reported.

Three quakes ranging in magnitude from 4.3 to 4.6 struck a few kilometers from the city of Nawabshah — where more than 1 million people live — between 3:51 and 4:50 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The shaking damaged homes, causing roofs to collapse, and disrupted electricity, CNN affiliate Geo News reported.

The local government said schools and colleges in the area would close.

Six children from the same family have been killed and another was injured after a hand grenade they mistook for a toy exploded in Pakistan.

The children, aged five to 12, were playing near their home in the town of Hangu, in the north west of the country, when the grenade they were playing with blew up, officials said.

Syed Ahmed Jan, a senior local administration official, added: ‘The children were playing with a hand grenade they found on nearby open ground.’

The area is rife with violence and tensions between Shia and Sunni Muslims.

Earlier this month a 14-year-old boy tackled a suicide bomber and died at the main gate of his school in the town, saving schoolmates who had gathered for their morning assembly.

Pakistan: Police Find Bombs Near Musharraf’s House

Պերվեզ Մուշարաֆ

A Pakistani police official says authorities have defused four small bombs planted near the house of former president and army chief, Pervez Musharraf, just two days before he’s to appear in court in a treason case.

Police officer Nayyar Saleem says an onlooker spotted the devices on Monday alongside a road about a half kilometer from Musharraf’s farmhouse on the outskirts of Islamabad.

Saleem says the improvised devices were left in separate plastic shopping bags, and there were about three kilograms of explosives altogether.

He says authorities don’t know if Musharraf was the intended target.

30 dead in Pakistan earthquake

pkistan-quakeA deadly 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck southern Pakistan on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The death toll rose quickly, with at least 30 deaths reported in the quake’s aftermath in Awaran in Balochistan province, said Asad Gilani, the province’s home secretary.

In addition to the fatalities, “dozens have been injured,” Gilani said.

Officials fear people are trapped in the rubble.

The province declared a rescue emergency. All officials were put on high alert, and doctors at hospitals were on standby.

More than 200 troops have been sent to the area to provide aid, including rescue teams and medical teams, Lt. Col. Abid Ali Askari said.

The tremors lasted two minutes. People flocked out onto the streets of Quetta, the provincial capital.

The quake was strong enough to cause a mass 30 to 40 feet high to emerge from the ocean like a small mountain island off the coast of Gwadar, local police official Mozzam Jah said. A large number of people gathered to view the newly formed island, he said.

Zahid Rafi, principal seismologist of the National Seismic Monitoring Center, confirmed the island had. He said that this is “not surprising” considering the magnitude of the earthquake.

Musharraf charged with murder for ‘failing to protect Benazir Bhutto from being assassinated’

Benazir BhuttoPakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf was today charged with murder over the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in 2007.

The decision by a court in Rawalpindi marks the first time any former army chief has been charged with a crime in Pakistan.

Musharraf has been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and facilitation for murder.

The former army commando who took power in a coup in 1999 appeared in person at the hearing and pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The next hearing will take place on August 27, when the first evidence will be presented.

Ms Bhutto was killed in December 2007 during a gun and bomb attack at a political rally in Rawalpindi.

Prosecutors claim that Musharraf, who was then president, failed to protect her properly.

Musharraf, 70, left Pakistan in 2008 after being forced to resign from office, but returned to the country in March and vowed to contest this year’s elections.

In addition to the Bhutto case, Musharraf is involved in a case related to the detention of judges and the death of a separatist leader.

He also faces threats from the Pakistani Taliban, which tried to assassinate him twice while he was in office and vowed to try again if he returned.

Close shave! Terrorists kidnap Pakistani father and threaten to kill him because he refuses to shave off his 30-inch moustache

Malik Amir Mohammad Khan AfridiA Pakistani father has told how he faces death threats and has been driven into hiding – because of his 30ins moustache.

Islamist extremists were so infuriated by Malik Amir Mohammad Khan Afridi’s facial hair they kidnapped the businessman and held him in a cave for a month until he shaved.

But despite his clash with the militants over his prized whiskers – said to signify virility and prosperity – the father-of-ten, from Peshawar, Pakistan, has now grown it back, vowing never to be bowed by the thugs again.

Mr Afridi said: ‘I don’t like smoking. I’m not fond of snuff, or drinking. This is the only choice in my life. I’d even sacrifice food, but not the moustache. It’s my life. It’s not part of my life. It is my life.

‘People give me a lot of respect. It’s my identity.’

He now spends 30 minutes a day caressing and trimming the moustache. The costs of coconut oil and soap used to maintain it comes to an eye-watering £100 a month.

But despite the cost, the death threats, the constant fear of attack and having to spend long periods away from his family, it is all worth it, he insists.

He has now been forced to leave his family for long periods of time and move south to Faisalabad where he feels safer.

He told The Independent: ‘I want to live, that is why I want to get out of Pakistan.

‘My first choice would be an Islamic country such as Dubai.

‘But I also willing to go to countries such as the US, Canada or Britain. I would like to appeal to the British government to help me.’

Unidentified gunmen kill 10 foreign mountain climbers and their guide at a hotel in Pakistan

A high altitude porter ascends a steep slope of Nanga ParbatPolice say gunmen killed 11 people, 10 of them foreigners, after barging into a hotel where the victims were staying in northern Pakistan.

The group of tourists from Russia, the Ukraine, and China were staying in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region in order to climb  Nanga Parbat, one of the world’s highest mountains.

The gunmen have yet to be identified and their motives are currently unknown.

Local police chief Barkat Ali says the climbers from Russia, China and the Ukraine were killed before dawn Sunday as they set off to climb Nanga Parbat, a popular destination for trekkers, in the Gilgit-Baltistan area of Pakistan.

The gunmen are said to have stormed into the hotel where the tourists were staying, according to Sky News.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

A senior government official told reporters that a large number of security personnel have been sent to Gilgit-Baltistan in the wake of the shooting spree.

‘Since the area is very remote with no roads or transport, their bodies will have to be retrieved by helicopter,’ the official said, according to Sky News.

Inside the salt mine so large it has a mosque and electric railway and where tourists can follow in footsteps of Alexander the Great

m8The Khewra salt mine, the second largest in the world, is a warren of 40 kilometers of tunnels housing an illuminated mosque made from salt rock, an electric train and even an asthma clinic.

The mine 100 miles south of Pakistan’s capital Islamabad is the largest and oldest salt mine in the country, drawing up to 250,000 visitors a year.

Khewra was discovered back in 320 BC by Alexander the Great’s troops, but trading started in Mughal era in the sixteenth century.

The main tunnel at ground level was developed during British rule by Dr. Warth, a mining engineer in 1872 and has been flourishing ever since.

An electric railway has been working in the mine since the 1930s. It once hauled extracted salt from the mines, but now brings tourists in to marvel at the salt formations.

The mine is still the largest source of salt in Pakistan with more than 350,000 tons produced per year, excavated at 18 different working levels.

To keep the vast mine from collapsing, only fifty percent of the salt found is mined in the 110 square kilometre area.

The cavernous tunnels have alternate bands of translucent, white and pink coloured salt.

As well as the traditional mining, for the past three years there has also been an experimental asthma clinic at the mine, attracting patients from all over the world.

Salt caves are seen by some as an alternative to drugs as asthma suffers can benefit from inhaling antibacterial salt particles to clear the lung passages.

The largest mine in the world is the Sifto Canada salt mine in Ontario.
