Hackers Sue German Government Over NSA Spying

անգելա մերկելA group of computer hackers and human rights campaigners in Germany announced Monday that they are suing their government for allegedly breaking the law by aiding foreign spies.

The Chaos Computer Club and the International League for Human Rights submitted a criminal complaint to federal prosecutors claiming that Chancellor Angela Merkel, her government and security officials tolerated and even helped members of the U.S. National Security Agency and Britain’s GCHQ to spy on German citizens.

While the German government has expressed misgivings about some of the reported allegations and is seeking to negotiate a ‘no-spy’ agreement with the United States, opposition lawmakers have accused Merkel’s administration of failing to put sufficient pressure on Washington for fear of jeopardizing diplomatic relations and intelligence cooperation.

Dancing dragons, fantastic costumes and a feast of fireworks: Spectacular pictures from Chinese New Year across the world

People around the world headed to the streets to celebrate the Chinese New Year, and to welcome the Year of the Horse.

Chinese New Year, which began on Friday, is the most important holiday in the country’s calendar with residents getting a week-long holiday. But this year celebrations were relatively low-key in China.

Chinese festivities normally begin with extravagant fireworks displays, which are believed to bring good luck and dispel evil spirits. However, as smog has blanketed parts of central and eastern China over the last few months, officials called on residents to buy fewer fireworks in order to lessen air pollution in the country.

Even the New Year galas, which are shown on state television, were reduced in scale in keeping with President Xi Jinping’s call for frugality, Reuters reported.

The holiday was also marked in cities around the world.

Sydney kicked off a week of festivities with a parade through the city’s centre attended by 100,000, according the City of Sydney Council.

The parade featured rocking horses, jockeys and a giant Trojan horse all moving to the sounds of pop song Horses, by Daryl Braithwaite. In keeping with the Year of the Horse celebrations, even the mounted police got a cheer from the crowd, according to AAP.

New York’s celebrations saw 5,000 participate in a parade through the streets of Chinatown. Magicians, acrobats, and dragon puppeteers spilled out into nearby streets.

Man arrested after allegedly threatening to kill George W. Bush

A New York man armed with a rifle, boxes of ammunition and a machete was arrested Friday after allegedly threatening to kill former President George W. Bush, according to a federal court complaint.

Benjamin Smith, a resident of upstate New York, threatened to “kill, kidnap and inflict bodily harm” on Bush, the complaint said.

Smith also professed a love interest in Barbara, one of the former president’s twin daughters, according to the complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

The U.S. Secret Service was alerted to the threat after Smith’s mother found a note in the home they share in which he allegedly wrote that he’s “going to work for George W. Bush and the Pentagon,” the complaint said.

Smith also allegedly wrote: “I have to slay a dragon and then Barbara Bush is mine… America is finished. Obama, Etc.”

On Friday, agents found Smith sitting in his car in Manhattan, with a loaded .38-caliber rifle, two boxes of ammunition, a container of gasoline and a machete, according to authorities.

During questioning, Smith told Secret Service agents, “I’m divorced and not currently seeing anyone, but I am working on a relationship with Barbara Bush,” the complaint said.

Threats against presidents of the United States are a federal crime.

Volcanic ash smothers part of Indonesia, kills 15

The 15 victims simply couldn’t outrun the searing debris that billowed out of Indonesia’s Mount Sinabung.

Plumes of ash had spewed more than a mile into the sky Saturday and descended in superheated clouds. Scalding ash up to 700 degrees in temperature raced down the slope in just two to three minutes.

By the end of several eruptions, at least 15 people had been killed, a government official told CNN. It was the first time Mount Sinabung’s volcanic output had resulted in deaths, the Jakarta Post reported.

The victims, and at least three other injured people, were all found in Sukameriah, a village close to the volcano’s crater, disaster mitigation agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told CNN.

Eruptions at Mount Sinabung are becoming common. After about 400 years of minimal volcanic activity there, Sinabung erupted in 2010. It has been emitting gas since September.

The newest volcanic activity has forced people to evacuate 16 villages, the Jakarta Post reported. At least 30,000 people have been temporarily housed at 42 evacuation centers, according to Billy Sumuan, the emergency response director in Indonesia for the humanitarian group World Vision.

At least 1,000 killed in Iraq this month, official says

Iraq_violenceTerrorist acts and other violence killed at least 1,000 people and injured 1,800 in Iraq in January, a senior Iraqi Interior Ministry official said Friday.

Many parts of Iraq have been engulfed in sectarian and political violence for months, but the situation has been exacerbated by recent fighting in Iraq’s western Anbar province.

January’s death toll would be ahead of the monthly rate for 2013, which was the deadliest year in the Middle Eastern nation since 2098, according to United Nations data. The U.N. has said almost 8,000 people were killed in violence last year, most of them civilians.

January’s figures were compiled by Iraq’s Interior, Defense and Health ministries, the official said.

Winging it: Nebraska mother-of-four gulps down 363 chicken wings for breakfast in 30 minutes to win $22,000 in eating competition

Molly Schuyler - Philadelphia (1)chomped, they chowed, they chewed. Wings disappeared and, in two competitors’ cases, reappeared, but it was 5-foot-7, 125-pound mother-of-four pulled off ‘the greatest performance in Wing Bowl history,’

Molly Schuyler devoured 363 chicken wings in 30 minutes at a competitive eating contest in Philadelphia.

Ms. Schuyler flew past the previous long-standing record of 337 wings as she finished the last round of the 22nd annual WIP 94 Sportsradio Wing Bowl.

Ms. Schuyler, whose performance host Angelo Cataldi dubbed ‘the greatest ever’, won $22,000.

Each year, Wing Bowl brings out some of the region’s best competitive eaters, who themselves have to prove their worth to qualify for the event by performing a miraculous feat of eating.

To qualify for the Wing Bowl, Schuyler ate nine pounds of cottage cheese in 114 seconds. She also holds a world record for eating a 72-ounce steak in less than three minutes.

Election tensions in Thailand as protesters vow to keep up pressure

thailand-bangkok-protestsThai anti-government demonstrators say they will keep up protests in Bangkok ahead of a controversial national election in a nation gripped by a bitter, protracted political crisis.

The protesters have been campaigning for months against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, fueling unrest that has left 10 people dead and hundreds more wounded.

Authorities have tightened security ahead of the vote Sunday, with 10,000 security personnel on standby.

In recent weeks, the anti-government demonstrators have blocked candidate registrations and early voting in parts of Bangkok and southern Thailand, the regions from which they draw their support.

Amid the bursts of violence, Thai authorities declared a state of emergency last week, giving extra powers to security forces and drawing criticism from human rights advocates.

But the government says it has no plans to use force against protesters, who plan to hold marches in central Bangkok on Friday and Saturday.

The protest leaders say they want as many of their supporters as possible to join them Sunday in the streets of Bangkok for what they describe as a “picnic” that they hope will shut down the city on the day of the election.

Cast away: Shipwrecked man makes land ‘after 16 months adrift’

Cast_AwayAn emaciated man survived 16 months adrift at sea, eating turtles, birds and fish and drinking turtle blood, having floated over 8,000 miles from Mexico to a remote Pacific atoll, it was claimed on Friday.

A Norwegian researcher said that the man – who only speaks Spanish and has a long beard and hair – was not in a good condition after his 24-foot fibreglass boat washed up on the reef at Ebon Atoll.

In a story reminiscent of the Tom Hanks film Cast Away, the man, dressed only in ragged underpants, apparently set off from Mexico heading for El Salvador in September 2012 with a companion, who died at sea several months ago.

Details of his survival are sketchy, Ms Fjeldstad added, as the man only speaks Spanish, but he said his name was Jose Ivan.

Mr Ivan indicated to Ms Fjeldstad that he survived by eating turtles, birds and fish and drinking turtle blood when there was no rain.

No fishing gear was on the boat and Mr Ivan suggested he caught turtles and birds with his bare hands.

According to Ms Fjeldstad, the Marshall Islanders who found Ivan took him to the main island on the atoll to meet Mayor Ione de Brum, who put in a call to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Majuro.

“He’s staying at the local council house and a family is feeding him,” said Ms Fjeldstad, who added that the man had a basic health check and was found to have low blood pressure.

But he did not appear to have any life-threatening illness and was able to walk with the aid of men on the island.

The statement of President Serzh Sargsyan at the joint press Conference with the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman

Your Excellency Mr. President,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to pay my first state visit to the Czech Republic at the invitation of the President of the Czech Republic.

We just held substantive and productive talks with President Zeman in the atmosphere of complete mutual understanding. We discussed both issues of our bilateral agenda as well as current regional and international topics.

We noted with satisfaction that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries we have registered prominent progress in interstate affairs. A dozen of documents on different fields signed today and to be signed tomorrow attest to it. We outlined healthcare, environment, decentralized collaboration, trade, economic and cultural cooperation as the areas of prospective cooperation. We stressed the necessity of widening business connections and stimulating investments, promoting people-to-people contacts and developing tourism. The direct flights under operation between our capitals serve as an important prerequisite for that. We attached importance to the ongoing Armenian-Czech business forum within the current visit.

We mutually highlighted the importance of the inter-parliamentary cooperation supported by the friendship groups established within the two parliaments.

We underlined the necessity of consistent development of cultural, educational and scientific ties. This year Yerevan and in 2015 Prague will respectively host Days of Czech and Armenian cultures. Mr. President proposed us to more actively encourage our youth to study in the Czech Republic, and I am surely grateful for that.

We reaffirmed the mutual will to deepen cooperation between our states within the framework of such international platforms as the UN institutions, OSCE, Council of Europe as well as the EU Eastern Partnership.

Prague stands high on Armenia’s European agenda, which is a priority in our foreign policy. About five years ago it was precisely in Prague, where Armenia undertook a commitment to enhance closer cooperation with the EU upon the start of the Eastern Partnership. This commitment was reaffirmed at the Vilnius summit last November. We are determined to continuously enhance and expand our relations with the EU. In this respect, we expect the support of friendly nations, especially the Czech comprehensive support.

We are convinced that different integration processes may certainly be developed based on compatibility and cooperation rather than controversy. In this sense the Eastern Partnership might serve as a natural bridge fostering economic integration from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. We are committed to make consistent efforts toward constructing more inclusive Europe, free from dividing lines. I am thankful to Mr. President for his understanding toward our decision to join the Customs Union. I am also thankful to the President of the Czech Republic for the invitation to the Eastern Partnership Summit that will take place on April 24, in Prague and I am particularly thankful for appreciating my visit to Prague on the 24th of April, bearing in mind that on the 24th of April Armenians across the world pay their tribute to the victims of the Genocide.

We highly appreciate the constructive position of the Czech Republic in support to the efforts of the OSCE Minsk group co-chairs to find a peaceful resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In November 2013, after a two-year interval the meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan took place in Vienna, which by itself is a positive step in the negotiation process. The direct contacts on the presidential level are important stimulus to the ongoing negotiations under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group, which is the only format of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution. The principles and provisions embedded in the Presidents’ statements of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair countries – Russia, the USA and France – provide appropriate ground for the just and enduring settlement of the conflict. We share the stance of the co-chair countries that those principles and provisions should be viewed as a whole and the attempts to prioritize one over the other will make consensus and conflict settlement impossible.

Միլոշ Զեման,Սերժ Սարգսյան, Չեխիայի Հանրապետություն

Nevertheless, the settlement of the problem is not realistic unless Azerbaijan abandons the malicious policy of bellicose propaganda, incitement of arms race and provocative actions along the line of contact. It’s high time for Azerbaijan to adopt a constructive stance on the exclusively peaceful settlement of the conflict. Here let me make a very important emphasis, Mr. President: we expect from the international community to show impartial approach or at least to be guided by the principle of not harming the process.

I completely shared the view of President Zeman that the regional conflicts shall be resolved through exclusively peaceful means and negotiations.

I assess our meeting as productive and hope that the Armenian-Czech dialogue and cooperation will develop and widen in different fields by mutual efforts and based on already existing grounds.

I thanked President Zeman for warm hospitality and invited him to pay a state visit to Armenia and I am thankful that he was pleased to accept the invitation.

In his welcoming address, President Serzh Sargsyan underlined that Armenian people remember with gratitude the names of such honored people of Czech nation, as Tomáš Masaryk, the President of Czechoslovakia after World War I, his contemporary, Czech writer and humanist Karel Hansa, who, in the first half of the 20th century, spread light on Armenian Genocide through their humanitarian, political and social activities.

In his address, President Serzh Sargsyan mentioned the honored people of Czech nation who were devoted to Armenological studies, Bedřich Hrozný, orientalist and linguist, Václav Černý , Ludmila Motalová, armenologist-translators due to whom Armenian eminent poets Isahakyan, Sevak, Saryan and others’ poems were translated into Czech language.

In confirmation of the two people’s friendship, the President of Armenia mentioned another memorable fact: during Chairmanship of Tomáš Masaryk and due to his personal decision, about 60 Armenian born students were given opportunities to study in the prestigious universities of the country with Czech scholarships communicating with and adopting European culture and advanced social and political views. Israeli religious party anger at girlfriend choice of Netanyahu’s son

Նաթանյահու

Israel’s ultra-Orthodox party has reacted in anger to the revelation that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son is dating a non-Jewish woman.

Yair Netanyahu, 23, is reportedly in a relationship with the Norwegian national Sandra Leikanger, 25, and met whilst studying at the same university in Israel.

Prime Minister Netanyahu casually mentioned his son’s relationship and travels in Norway with his girlfriend to the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg in Davos last week, Israeli press reported. The relationship was first reported by the Norwegian daily Dagen.

Aryeh Deri, leader of Shas, a political party that has for decades been one of the key power brokers in Israeli politics, reacted with the words: “Woe is us.”

The matter is of a wider importance to all Jewish people, he noted.

Other Israeli politicians have questioned the importance of the issue.

In Israel, there are no civil marriages, so Israeli couples can get married only in religious courts, and only to partners of the same faith.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s second wife was non-Jewish, before she converted.

Scarlett Johansson ends eight-year run as Oxfam ambassador after controversy over her endorsement of SodaStream

Scarlett Johansson has ended her relationship with a humanitarian group after being criticised over her support for an Israeli soda maker company that operates in the West Bank.

A statement released by Johansson’s spokesman on Wednesday said the 29-year-old actress has ‘a fundamental difference of opinion’ with Oxfam International because the humanitarian group opposes all trade from Israeli settlements, saying they are illegal and deny Palestinian rights.

Earlier this month, The Avengers and Her actress signed on as the first global brand ambassador of SodaStream International Ltd., and she’s set to appear in an ad for the at-home soda maker during the Super Bowl on Sunday.

SodaStream has come under fire from pro-Palestinian activists for maintaining a large factory in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, a territory captured by Israel in 1967 and claimed by the Palestinians.

Johansson had served as a global ambassador for Oxfam since 2007, raising funds and promoting awareness about global poverty.

Hundreds of snakes, many decaying, found in house in Santa Ana, California

Neighbors had been complaining for a while about the dreadful smell coming from William Buchman’s house in Santa Ana, California.

And when authorities raided Buchman’s two-story house Wednesday, they discovered the cause of the putrid odor.

Vast numbers of snakes — some alive, most of them dead and decaying.

In some cases, only the skins remained. Mice and rats were also in abundance.

Acting on a search warrant, police and animal services officers wearing protective suits and masks searched the house, finding dirty rooms full of stacks of plastic bins containing pythons.

Police said “several hundred snakes” were believed to be in Buchman’s home.

In just one room, they found more than 50 dead pythons and seven live ones, KCAL/KCBS reported.

Police said Buchman, a 53-year-old teacher, has been arrested and booked on suspicion of animal cruelty. He has not yet appeared in court or been formally charged.

It wasn’t immediately clear why he had kept so many snakes in his house.
