Toxic nuclear waste dumped illegally by the Mafia is blamed for surge in cancers in southern Italy

Toxic nuclear and industrial waste, dumped illegally by the Neapolitan mafia, is responsible for a surge in cancers in southern Italy, it is feared.

The Italian Senate is investigating a link between buried pollutants and a rise of almost 50 per cent in tumours found in the inhabitants of several towns around Naples.

In classified documents from 1997, only now released to the public, a mafia kingpin warned authorities that the poison in the ground would kill everyone ‘within two decades’.

Doctors first noticed that cancers in towns around Naples were on the rise in the 1990s. But since that time they have increased by 40 per cent in women and 47 per cent in men.

Camorra chief Francesco Schiavone, once the world’s number one mafia fugitive, said: ‘The inhabitants are all at risk of dying from cancer within twenty years.
Francesco Schiavone was arrested and eventually given a life sentence for a string of murders.

In secret out-of-court testimony he told lawyers how the Casalesi clan ran ‘a military style operation’ dumping millions of tonnes of waste on farmland, in caves, in quarries and even on the edge of towns.

The cost of a clean up would run into billions, he said, describing several sites in the suburbs of Naples.

‘To clean it up it would cost the entire Italian budget for a year I think.’

The lower house in the Italian Parliament had elected to make the documents public in the interests of transparency.

Kanye and Kim sue over leaked Kasdashian proposal video

Kim-Kardashian-Instagram-Engagement-Ring

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are accusing a YouTube co-founder of illegally publishing video of their engagement party to boost his new “foundering” website.

A lawsuit filed Thursday by the celebrity couple blasts Chad Hurley, accusing him of secretly recording West’s surprise proposal to Kardashian in the middle of San Francisco’s AT&TPark on October 21.

The video shows West kneeling near second base to ask Kardashian to marry him while a large orchestra plays in center field.

Hurley “finagled entry” into the birthday party that West threw for his girlfriend, although only “several dozen people” were invited, the lawsuit said. Although he tagged along with someone who was invited, he was permitted to stay “only after giving his word — including in writing — that he would not publish any aspect of the event.” The court filing includes a photo of Hurley purportedly holding the signed confidentiality agreement in his hand.

The video is titled “PLEEESE MARRY MEEE!!! Congrats Kim and Kanye!”

It is still posted on the website, and the counter indicates it has been viewed 1.6 million times.

Hurley and his company did not immediately respond to CNN requests for comment on the lawsuit.

Morvarid has been entirely designed and manufactured by Iranian experts. The TV also says it has a speed of up to 12 knots, has a diesel generator but can be electrically-powered for up to six to 10 hours.

Hundreds of bodies found in Bosnia mass grave

Բոսնիա,մասսայական գերեզման Investigators in Bosnia have uncovered a mass grave thought to contain several hundred bodies of victims of the conflict that followed the breakup of the former Yugoslavia two decades ago.

The remains are believed to be those of victims of Bosniak and Croat ethnicity from Prijedor and its surroundings, killed in the summer of 1992, according to the Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The site, at Tomasica in Prijedor municipality, is one of the biggest mass graves found in Bosnia and Herzegovina since the conflict, said Boris Grubesic, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office.

As of Thursday, 231 complete bodies had been exhumed, as well as the body parts of another 112 people.

But, he added, the number found goes up by the day or even the hour.

More than 30 personal items have also been found, he said.

Excavation of the mass grave, which goes to a depth of 10 meters (33 feet), began in early September and is expected to continue into next week.

The remains are being taken to an identification center in Sanski Most, where they will remain until the forensic analysis and identification process is completed, the prosecutor’s office said.

Identification of the remains may help bring closure for the many families whose relatives vanished in the course of the conflict, which ended in 1995.

Ten-year-old Chinese pupil jumps to his death from 30th floor window ‘on teacher’s orders’ because he had not written an apology for talking in class

Չինաստան,դպրոց,ծնողներ

A ten-year-old boy has died after a teacher ‘told him’ to jump from a building.

The Chinese youngster, named as Jun Jun, fell 30 floors to his death after failing to write a self-criticism letter demanded by his teacher.

The fifth-grade primary school student had been told to write a 1,000-character apology by his teacher, Miss Chen, for talking in class.

His devastated parents have now launched a campaign against the extreme pressure put on Chinese students.

The child smashed into a parked car beneath the flat where his family live in Jinjiang district.

Due to China’s strict one-child policy, it is likely Jun Jun was the couple’s only child.

‘The police investigation is still under way,’ an official in Jinjiang district said, refusing to comment further, the Hindustan Times reported.

The boy’s school said today on its verified account on Sina Weibo, a Chinese equivalent of Twitter, that the child and some of his classmates had been ordered to write reviews of their behaviour after they disturbed a speaking competition.

He died ‘by accident’, it said.

Located at the very border of the Armenia and Azerbaijan, Kayan-avan of the Tavoush region is a tiny village with 306 people living there. Yet, the Kayan-Avan secondary school N1 has about 140 schoolchildren actively participating in various events, contest and Olympiads all over the country. These were the main factors influenced the decision making about the project, since CRONIMET believes that improving conditions in such school at the border villages and regions would at least to some extent prevent people leaving their communities.

Thus, the assistance project was designed and launched with Kayan-Avan in September 2012, having its main goal of supporting educational activities in the regions to encourage children and youth to pursue and complete their education.  The building adjacent to the school has been planned to be fully renovated to serve as a pre-school for about 50-60 children.

Starting May 2013, major renovation of the pre-school building is undergone. The process has been is divided into two phases. The first phase included renovation of the roof and some preparatory works; while during the second phase the capital renovation of the full building has been carried out and concluded by October 2013. The investment made by the CRONIMET Charity Foundation totals to AMD 40 million.

Ֆրանչեսկա Պասկալե

Silvio Berlusconi has married his fiancée in a secret wedding at his private chapel, a friend has claimed.

The three-time Italian premier, 77, is said to have wed former TV showgirl Francesca Pascale, 28, at a church inside his palatial villa near Milan, three weeks ago.

The couple, who met when Miss Pascale was a teenage activist in his Forza Italia party, have been knocked in recent weeks by allegations that their relationship is ‘a sham’.

Miss Pascale is seeking Euro 10million damages after a TV station broadcast claims by Bulgarian actress Michele Bonev that she is in fact a lesbian. She says the comments are defamatory.

Now close friend ‘Bunga Bunga’ girl Marythell Polanco has said that she was invited to a secret ceremony, which took place just days before Miss Bonev’s claims surfaced.

Asked on Italian radio if the couple would get married, the Dominican model and singer revealed: ‘They are already married.’

She told Italian station Radio2: ‘They invited me but I couldn’t go because I was in labour with my son.

Czech President in Wheelchair After Knee Injury

Չեխիայի նախագահըՄիլոշ Զեման

Czech officials say President Milos Zeman needs to use a wheelchair after he injured his right knee, limiting his duties for up to six weeks.

The 69-year-old Zeman spent a night at a Prague hospital after falling at his residence on the way to the bathroom Wednesday, according to Health Minister Martin Holcat. The president, who damaged cartilage in the knee but won’t need surgery, was discharged Thursday.

Zeman will be recovering at the presidential castle in Lany, just outside Prague. His condition has forced him to cancel planned trips for the next few weeks.

Zeman, a chain smoker with a well-documented soft spot for alcohol, was recently diagnosed with diabetes. Holcat said alcohol didn’t play a role in Zeman’s injury.

Beijing Calls Tiananmen Crash ‘Terrorist Act,’ Detains Five

Two days after a deadly fiery car crash in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, Chinese authorities officially called it as an “organized, premeditated violent terrorist act.”

On Monday, a Jeep carrying three passengers plowed through groups of tourists and burst into flames right in front of Beijing’s famed Tiananmen Gate where the portrait of Mao Zedong hangs over the iconic square.

The crash killed five, including the three passengers, and injured 40, many of them tourists.

For days the state media and the government called it an accident and stayed largely silent, even censoring images and mention of the smoldering wreckage on Chinese social media.

On Wednesday evening right before the national evening news, CCTV and the state-run news agency Xinhua announced that five suspects are detained in connection with the “terrorist act.”

The three people who died in the Jeep were all Uighurs, the Muslim minority group from the restive Xinjiang region of China. Xinhua reported that the  driver Usmen Hasan, his mother Kuwanhan Reyim and his wife Guliz Gini plowed through the crowd, crashed into the guardrail next to the moat of the Forbidden City, and then lit themselves on fire with gasoline.

The Beijing police said that they found “equipment full of gasoline, two knives and steel sticks as well as flag with extremist religious content” in the wreckage of the Jeep.

According the Xinhua report, the police claimed that the men admitted that they knew the driver Hasan and that they had conspired to carry out the attack.

‘Highly sophisticated’ drug tunnel found linking San Diego, Tijuana

Մեքսիկա,թմրանյութերի տեղափոխման թունել

Investigators have shut down a newly-completed, “highly sophisticated” drug tunnel running under the border between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said.

It hasn’t been utilized,” ICE spokeswoman Virginia Kice said late Wednesday. “We were able to shutter it before it was utilized to bring drugs into the interior.”

The discovery was made by the San Diego Tunnel Task Force, which includes members of ICE, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The investigation is ongoing, according to Kice.

Like a 600-yard tunnel discovered along the border in November 2010, this tunnel had lighting and a rail system.

The earlier tunnel connected a warehouse in Tijuana with one in the Otay Mesa industrial area of San Diego.

About 30 tons of marijuana were discovered in that operation, U.S. officials said.

Drug cartels on the border have become so powerful and sophisticated in recent years that many Mexican communities and areas along the border are patches of uncontrollable violence, experts say.

U.S. Embassy remembers journalist Daniel Pearl in Tumo film showcase

On October 30, The U.S. Embassy hosted a documentary showing of “PAGE ONE: INSIDE THE NEW YORK TIMES”, in honor of slain American journalist Daniel Pearl.  Pearl was a Wall Street Journal reporter who was killed by terrorists in 2002.  Following his murder, Danny’s family and friends established the Daniel Pearl Foundation to carry on his legacy, using music and words to address the root causes of the hatred that took his life.  U.S. Embassies around the world celebrate his life annually, through musical and other cultural events.

PAGE ONE: INSIDE THE NEW YORK TIMES shows The New York Times newsroom and the inner workings of the Times’ Media Desk. With the Internet surpassing print as the main news source and newspapers all around the world facing layoffs and cutbacks, PAGE ONE chronicles the transformation of the media industry at its time of greatest turmoil.  It gives us an up-close look at all that produces the “daily miracle” of a great news organization. What emerges is a nuanced portrait of journalists continuing to produce extraordinary work under increasingly difficult circumstances. At the heart of the film is the burning question on the minds of everyone who cares about a rigorous American press, Times lover or not: what will happen if the fast-moving future of media leaves behind the fact-based, original reporting that helps to define our society?

PAGE ONE: INSIDE THE NEW YORK TIMES is part of the American Film Showcase showing at Tumo until November 15.

Israel releases Palestinian prisoners amid protests

Իսրայել,Պաղեստին, բանտարկյալներ

Israel released 26 Palestinian prisoners early Wednesday, part of an agreement that fueled new peace talks.

The released prisoners were the second of four groups — roughly 100 prisoners — expected to be freed in a deal cobbled together by the United States to jump-start stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

The Palestinian Prison Authority confirmed 21 prisoners were released shortly after midnight in the West Bank and another five were released in Gaza.

Families of the prisoners were on hand in the West Bank, where cheers went up as buses carrying the prisoners arrived.

But the prison release has angered some Israelis, who protested outside the West Bank prison where the inmates where held before their release.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the decision to free Palestinian prisoners one of the most difficult of his career.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed the prisoners’ release, describing it as a “day of joy.” But he warned that there would be no peace agreement with Israel until all Palestinian prisoners had been freed.

EU Looking Into Russia G20 Spying Report

russia-g20-spying-allegations

The European Union is investigating newspaper reports that Russia tried to put spyware onto computers of visiting delegations in St. Petersburg at last month’s summit of leaders from the world’s 20 top economies, but has yet to find any evidence.

European Commission spokesman Frederic Vincent said Wednesday that experts were looking into gifts like USB sticks, which were given out at the Group of 20 summit, but said “analysis of hardware and software have not amounted to any serious security concerns.” He insisted the investigation hadn’t yet been completed.

Vincent also said it was a routine rule for EU diplomats and leaders to stay away from using handouts or any external equipment during foreign travel.

The reports, which Russia denied, first featured in European newspapers this week.

John Lennon’s Childhood Home Sold

The red-bricked Victorian home where Beatles star John Lennon spent the first five years of his life was auctioned for 480,000 pounds ($770,250)  this evening.

The three-bedroom, mid-terraced home at 9 Newcastle Road in Wavertree, Liverpool, is located just a few minutes away from Penny Lane — the title of one of the Beatles’ most iconic tracks. The BBC reported that an American who wished to remain anonymous bought the home after a bidding war.

The property, that Lennon lived in from 1940 to 1945, has only changed hands a few times since the Lennon family left and according to the current owner, the property still strongly resembles the home that Lennon lived in.

Brown agrees that the house has retained some of the feel from when Lennon lived there, but concedes that if a Beatle hadn’t inhabited the property, he would have refurbished the place. “If it was any other house, you’d say ‘get the builders in.’”

The auction took place at The Cavern Club, a music venue about three miles from the house. It’s a special place to the Beatles as they played there some 292 times between 1961 and 1963.

Turkey Returned Some Church Effects After the Genocide: We Demand the Rest

Հարութ-Սասունյան1By Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

This is the amazing tale of the Turkish government handing over to Istanbul’s Armenian Patriarchate in the 1920’s some of the church effects looted during the Genocide.

According to attorney Loutfig Kouyoumjian’s book, Hay Hamankayin Antsoutartser: 1927-1950 [Armenian Community Happenings: 1927-1950], published in Istanbul in 1950, the Turkish government had turned over to the Armenian Patriarchate 64 large crates full of church effects. Kouyoumjian was a member of the Patriarchate’s Finance Committee.

The returned items included crowns inlaid with diamonds and pearls, vestments, garments with gold threads and silver crosses, a belt buckle from the famous Abousheikh Church with golden latches decorated by diamonds, emeralds and rubies, 72 rugs belonging to Sourp Garabed Monastery and Sourp Krikor Lousavorich Church of Gesaria, and churches in Talas and other regions, and a gold box covered with precious stones containing several saints’ relics. Another crate had the vestments of Gomidas Vartabed, his gold fountain pen, and valuable manuscripts of his musical arrangements of church liturgy. The Locum Tenens Archbishop Kevork Arslanian signed a receipt acknowledging his acceptance of these items and appointed Archpriest Drtad Boyajian as their guardian.

The list of the returned items prepared by the Patriarchate included “scrolls, manuscripts, and antique books. In keeping with the laws on antiquities, the books were delivered to the Istanbul Museum.”

These revelations raise several important questions. What happened to the returned church effects? Our investigation indicates that none of these items are currently in the custody of the Armenian Patriarchate. A few of them were handed to Armenian clergymen of Istanbul, while others were sent to Etchmiadzin. The overwhelming majority simply vanished several decades ago, most probably stolen and sold.

Mr. Kouyoumjian reported in his book that in the late 1920’s, Judge Haroutioun Mosdichian, Chairman of the Patriarchate’s Executive Committee, informed the Finance Committee that he had solid evidence that several of the returned silver pieces were sold at the Istanbul jewelry market. Mosdichian was a highly respected individual who had occupied important positions in the Turkish government.  The Finance Committee immediately sealed the room where the returned items were stored. The next day, Abp. Arslanian broke the seal and left the door of the storage room open. The Archbishop then dismissed the Committee members.

A special investigative committee, including Mr. Kouyoumjian, then conducted a thorough search and transmitted its findings to the Executive Committee. The latter blamed not only Mosdichian but also Abp. Arslanian of wrongdoings regarding the returned church effects. Abp. Arslanian in turn accused Patriarch Mesrob Naroyan of being responsible for the missing items. After Patriarch Naroyan formed a committee to update the list of the remaining church effects, he discovered that almost nothing was left of the contents of the 64 crates delivered earlier to the Patriarchate.

In his book, Kouyoumjian relates another strange tale regarding the rugs delivered to the Patriarchate by the Turkish government. On March 8, 1924, two Turks — Haje Ismail, the son of Molla Khalil of Gesaria, and Mehmet of Talas — presented to Abp. Arslanian a written demand, claiming that nine of the rugs had nothing to do with the Armenian Church and must be returned to them. When the Patriarchate rejected their request, the Turks filed a lawsuit against Abp. Arslanian, claiming that the nine rugs were worth 1,975 Ottoman gold pieces.

On June 26, 1924, attorney Kouyoumjian defended the Patriarchate’s interests in court. Strangely, the Patriarchate agreed to settle the lawsuit by paying 500 gold pieces to the two Turks. Several years later, when Mr. Kouyoumjian inquired about the disposition of those rugs, he was told that there were no such rugs at the Patriarchate.

In light of this newly found reference to the Turkish government’s return of church effects, the Armenian Patriarchate must now conduct a thorough investigation of its archives to review its records of the missing items.

More importantly, by having returned the 64 crates, the Turkish government had in effect admitted the theft of Armenian Church properties during the Genocide. A lawsuit must be filed not only against the Istanbul Museum for the antique books it improperly received in the 1920’s, but also against museums and libraries throughout Turkey for the return to the Armenian Patriarchate of the vast number of religious effects looted from several thousand Armenian churches!
