Climbers on Mont Blanc discover body of young guide who disappeared on solo climb 32 YEARS earlier frozen in glacial ice

 Մոնբլան

The body of a young climber has been found preserved in the glacial ice of the Mont Blanc range of the French Alps, 32 years after he went missing.

Mountain climbers discovered the body of Patrice Hyvert, a trainee mountain guide, as they scaled the western side of the Aguille Verte mountain, part of the Mont Blanc massif.

The 23-year-old was last seen alive on the morning of March 1, 1982, when he took off on a solitary climb up the range which straddles the French-Italian border.

Bad weather set in that afternoon. Another climber was evacuated from the same mountain two days later, but Mr Hyvert was never found.

Local police confirmed to newspaper Dauphine Libere and other media that the frozen body was that of the missing climber after finding his identity card still in his wallet.

The discovery last Thursday came as a shock to Mr Hyvert’s 82-year-old father, Gerard.

The dangerous terrain, and inclement weather, of the Mont Blanc range results in scores of deaths of mountain climbers each year.

The bodies of the missing are often discovered the following year after the ice thaws.

And the most popular tourist city in the world is …. London tops prestigious visitor poll ahead of Paris, New York and Beijing

Լոնդոն

In the last two years, it has hosted the Olympic Games, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the Tour de France – events that have left it firmly in the public eye.

And it seems that London’s position as a magnet for visitors is likely to continue, with the UK capital being ranked as the most popular destination in the world for tourists.

According to a new research, London is likely to pull in more visitors than any other city on the planet in 2014, eclipsing the likes of New York, Rome, Paris, Beijing and Dubai.

The Mastercard Global Cities Index report predicts that London will welcome a staggering 18.7million visitors in 2014, placing it at the top of the international tree.

Փարիզ

This figure also suggests that London will out-perform Bangkok – which was ranked highest in the 2013 survey – by some 300,000 incoming tourists.
Paris comes second in the list, with Istanbul, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Milan, Rome and Vienna also featuring highly.

The Thai capital Bangkok drops from first place in 2013 to third in 2014, but still keeps its nose ahead of Singapore and Dubai in fourth and fifth respectively.

Pilot buys pizza for delayed passengers

pizza-flightAdam Ritchie, a Domino’s Pizza manager in Cheyenne, Wyoming, said he’d never received a call like the one he got Monday night.

“I need to feed my whole plane,” the caller told him.

“Lucky me, I hear 160 people. It ended up being like 38 pizzas,” Ritchie told CNN.

A Frontier Airlines flight from Washington to Denver was diverted to Cheyenne because of bad weather. The plane was stuck on the ground for nearly two hours.

The food on board was gone, so the pilot decided to order pizzas for everyone, a passenger told CNN affiliate KDVR. Each row got its own pie.

Frontier Airlines spokeswoman Tyri Squyres said she wasn’t surprised at all by what the pilot did.

“This is not unusual for our pilots to go above and beyond to care for our customers,” she said. “We have some great pilots who work here.”

Mayor of Paris announces plans to ban smoking in public parks, just days after government announces banning wine from workplace

The Socialist mayor of Paris has announced plans to ban smoking in city parks as part of a plan to cut down on tobacco-related illnesses.

In a muddled announcement on national TV on Sunday, Anne Hidalgo said the move would be an experiment aimed at ‘teaching people about cigarette addiction’.

Aware of the massive opposition that there will be to the move in a country where some 30 per cent of the country still smoke, Ms Hidalgo insisted that her ‘experiment’ would not be strictly enforced.

Smoking is now technically banned in all inside public places in France, including cafes, restaurants, stations and museums.

But terraces and other places outdoors are not included in the ban, because the chances of smokers harming those sitting around them are considered miniscule.

Tobacco-related illnesses are a leading cause of death in France, with an estimated 73,000 deaths annually.

Despite massive taxes on cigarette sales, health warnings, and every more stringent bans, there are still some 16 million smokers in France.

Man has world’s ‘largest tumour’ removed from his leg after birthmark grew to 17 STONE mass

Beijing, China1Doctors have removed what is believed to be the world’s largest tumour from a man’s leg – after it grew to more than 17 stone.

Yang Jianbin, 37, from Shanxi Province, China was born with a dark birthmark on the right side of his lower back – and noticed it getting larger when he was nine.

By the time he was 12, it had increased to the size of a fist and he had surgery to remove it.

But despite medical intervention, it started to grow again and a recent hospital check in Beijing revealed that the tumour had increased to an enormous 110kg – more than 17 stone.

Chief surgeon Chen Minliang said Yang suffered from Neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that affects the normal growth and development of cell tissue.

Yang had said previously that the huge tumour was so big he could only lie down or sit on bed all day.

He was given two hospital beds to accommodate the 1.2m tumour, which made up two-thirds of his total body weight.

Removal surgery involved nine doctors and lasted 16 hours. During the procedure, the patient received 5,000ml of blood, which is more than the entire amount an adult’s body holds.

But he is said to be recovering well and is expected to be discharged from hospital in Beijing later this month.

Փոլ Մաքարտնի

John Dann and Claudia Rogers made posters for the July 5 Paul McCartney concert hoping to catch the singer’s eye.

They did.

During his show in Albany, N.Y., over the weekend, the singer noticed that Rogers was holding up a piece of paper that read, “He won’t marry me ’till he meets you.”
Dann’s read, “I have the ring & I’m 64.”

“We should see if she will say yes today,” McCartney, 72, remarked to the crowd, as he called the couple both to the stage.

After Dann sang a few lines of the Beatles song, “When I’m Sixty-Four,” he got down on one knee.

Of course, his bride-to-be said “yes.”

The Eiffel Tower is serving as the majestic backdrop for a three-day jumping competition that brings together some of the world’s top riders and their steeds.

The Global Champions Tour started Friday, adding the French capital’s landmark to the list of glamorous sites where it has been set.

Princess Charlotte Casiraghi was among Friday’s first winners in an early event.

The competition has transformed a portion of the grassy Champs de Mars, where the Eiffel Tower sits, into a horse-lover’s paradise. It is reaching out to children with donkey rides and a tent village of equestrian art and horsey accoutrements for adults.

The public without tickets can watch the competition on big screens or stand at fences for a front-row view, or watch horses exercising in the paddock nearby.

‘I don’t feel quite write…’: Doctors discover woman’s stomach aches were caused by four-inch fountain pen that she swallowed six months previously

pen stuck inside woman2Doctors who performed an x-ray on a woman who suffered a stomach ache for six months were shocked to discover a fountain pen lodged inside her.

Student Shing Fang, 20, went to a hospital in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, after the persistent pain became so unbearable she could no longer eat.

When doctors carried out an endoscopy, by inserting a camera through her mouth and into her stomach, they were amazed to find a long thin object badly corroded by stomach acid..

After ordering an x-ray, there were shocked when they realised that the four-inch long object was a fountain pen that had been there for around half a year.

The doctors operated immediately and removed the pen.

They warned that if it had been there any longer, it could have led to peritonitis, or even death.

As to how the pen got there, the young woman said she had no memory at all of swallowing it.

However, she agreed that it might well have been ingested after drinking too much when celebrating good exam results.

Study: Just Thinking by Yourself Isn’t Much Fun

aloneYou might think you’d love to escape this busy world and spend some time alone with your thoughts. But a new study of people who did that shows that many of them found it wasn’t very fun.

Some even started giving themselves electric shocks as the minutes ticked by, apparently out of boredom.

Overall, the study found that when people were left alone to think for six to 15 minutes, they rated the experience on average in about the middle of a 9-point scale of enjoyment. About half gave it a rating at the halfway mark or below.

The study was released Thursday by the journal Science.

The sides discussed issues related to the current stage of the negotiations over the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.

Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Karabakh shared the view, that Baku’s purposeful provocations aimed at the escalation of tensions along the Nagorno-Karabakh Line of Contact and on the Armenian-Azerbaijani state border and the bellicose rhetoric and statements, that distort the essence of the conflict, voiced by the Azerbaijani leadership on high-level, once again reveal Azerbaijan’s destructive behavior that hinders the progress in talks.

Ukraine: 4 Troops Die as Attacks on Rebels Rise

ukraine-troopsFour Ukrainian troops were killed as forces carried out over 100 attacks on rebel positions and forced pro-Russia separatists out of three eastern villages, a military official said Wednesday.

The foreign ministers from Germany, France, Ukraine and Russia were to meet later Wednesday in Berlin to keep searching for a way to de-escalate the conflict that has taken over 400 lives since April.

Fighting in eastern Ukraine has increased since a much-violated 10-day cease-fire expired Monday. President Petro Poroshenko said conditions for further peace talks had not been met as rebels refused to disarm or hand back seized border posts.

National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said three military troops died in rebel attacks on government vehicles and checkpoints and 10 were wounded.

Turkey’s Declining Support in Congress After Blunders at Home and Abroad

Էրդողան, Ֆեթուլլահ Գյուլեն,Թուրքիա

By Harut Sassounian

www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com

Due to Prime Minister Erdogan’s widespread human rights abuses of his own citizens and foreign policy blunders vis-a-vis Armenia, Cyprus, Egypt, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Israel, and Syria, Turkey has lost much of the support it once enjoyed in the United States, and indeed, around the world.

The most recent evidence of this downturn is the adoption of House Resolution 4347 (Turkey Christian Churches Accountability Act) on June 26 by the Foreign Affairs Committee. Because of souring relations between Ankara and Washington, the U.S. Government refrained from spending its political capital on the Hill to prevent the bill’s passage.

In addition, intra-Turkish feuds such as the one between Erdogan and Fethullah Gulen, a Turkish cleric with extensive influence in Turkey and abroad, have deprived Ankara of important grassroots support in the United States. Gulen-affiliated groups did not lift a finger to bail out Erdogan’s government from a humiliating defeat in the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Due to another internal political dispute, the Turkish Coalition of America refused to sign the joint letter sent by three other Turkish-American groups to House Committee members opposing the Churches bill. In a desperate search for supporters, the Turkish groups recruited to their lobbying efforts the Azerbaijan American Council, which has no business sticking its nose in a matter involving the status of Christian churches in Turkey. By signing such a hostile joint letter, the Azeri group further antagonized Armenians worldwide, making it more difficult to reach a fair settlement in the Karabagh (Artsakh) conflict.

Finally, the Turkish government’s clash with Israel after the Mavi Marmara attack and Turkey’s new Ambassador Serdar Kilic’s recent angry letter to the American Jewish Committee for recognizing the Armenian Genocide deprived Ankara of any lobbying support it used to receive in Congress from the Israeli government and some Jewish-American organizations.

In the absence of all support from its traditional allies, the Turkish government could only rely on its hired guns — highly-paid US lobbying firms — to implement the standard Turkish tactics used in opposing any initiative that Ankara deems to be against its interests:

1) Object firmly to any anti-Turkish initiative to prevent its consideration;

2) If step 1 does not work, propose amendments to dilute the initiative;

3) Even after diluting the initiative, pressure the committee members to vote against it.

In the case of the churches bill, the Turkish government failed to block its consideration by the House Foreign Affairs Committee and was unable to collect enough votes to defeat the measure. The only thing left for Ankara to do was having some members of the Congressional Turkish Caucus to propose amendments to dilute the bill. This tactic had a modest success because Cong. Ed Royce (Rep.-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, tried to reach a consensus on the bill and went out of his way to accommodate the handful of dissenting members of Congress. After all, who in their right mind would oppose a bill that called for the return of religious properties to their proper owners which happen to be the Christian churches!

This is the second major defeat that Turkey suffered in Congress in the last three months. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee had adopted an Armenian Genocide resolution with a vote of 12-5 on April 10 — a further indication of the declining Turkish political clout in Washington. One simply needs to read two recent articles in the New York Times (“After Opening Way to Rebels, Turkey is Paying Heavy Price”) and the Wall Street Journal (“An Unhelpful Ally”) to see the degree of damage Erdogan has caused to his country’s reputation.

In addition to the loss of clout, the Turkish government is wasting the millions of dollars it pays each year to high-powered, but apparently useless American lobbying firms that make big promises, pocket large amounts of money, and deliver practically nothing. When will the people of Turkey demand an account from their corrupt and irresponsible leaders who are throwing away Turkish citizens’ hard earned tax dollars in a vain attempt to whitewash their genocidal history?

Pundits are predicting that despite Prime Minister Erdogan’s dismal record both at home and abroad, he is expected to be elected president next August. Armenians, Greeks, Kurds and other oppressed ethnic and religious minorities are only too happy to see Turkey ruled by an incompetent leader who will bring the country to its knees!

Death toll at 32 in Indian building collapse

շենքի փլուզում

The death toll from this weekend’s building collapse in southern India has risen to 32, but two workers were pulled out alive two days after the accident, a police official said Tuesday.

The 11-story building under construction in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state, toppled over during heavy rains Saturday. Emergency crews furiously dug through the rubble for 20 people thought to be missing, police said.

The pair of workers were rescued early Tuesday from under the debris of the caved-in structure, according to city Police Commissioner Sebastian George, and they were rushed to a hospital. They are among 27 survivors now under medical care, George said.

Building collapses in India are an all-too-common occurrence and have killed hundreds of people over the past several years.

Emotional moment girl, 11, who lost her mother and two sisters in car crash was serenaded by Bruno Mars after she came out of coma while listening to his music

Zumyah-mars

An 11-year-old girl in Ohio who came out of a coma after listening to Bruno Mars songs throughout her recovery got to meet the singer that doctors say helped save her life.

Zumyah Thorpe, 11, suffered a severe brain injury after a drunk driver slammed into her mother’s car last year.

Her pregnant mother and two younger sisters passed away in the horrific accident and Zumyah wasn’t expected to survive.

Nearly 70 percent of patients who are in this same condition do not survive and those who do are often left without the ability to walk, talk or eat on their own.

Doctors have credited Bruno Mars’ music with helping Zumyah do all of those things after nurses played his songs to her at the hospital every night.

Zumyah’s grandmother Ronda told WKYC that not long after coming out of the coma she started singing Mars’ hit song (You’re Amazing) Just The Way You Are.

Doctors say this music therapy is what helped Zumyah recover quicker than most, and even start walking again.

Zumyah had a private meeting with Mars before his concert in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday night.

The during the concert in front of 20,000 fans, Bruno jumped off the stage and into the crowd where he embraced Zumyah and sang her favorite song ‘Just The Way You Are.’

Beyonce: Forbes’ most powerful celebrity

հայտնի անձն

Beyonce isn’t just one of the world’s most influential people. She’s also the world’s most powerful celebrity, according to Forbes magazine.

The publication has released its annual Celebrity 100 list and has named Queen Bey to the top spot.

And yet, as Forbes notes, Beyonce’s empire isn’t limited to the music business. While she’s setting out on joint tours with her husband — they’re currently crossing the country with their “On the Run” trek — Beyonce’s also managing her clothing company, line of perfumes, and collaborations with brands like Pepsi and H&M.

All told, Forbes estimates that Beyonce earned roughly $115 million between June 2013 and June 2014. By comparison, her husband made an estimated $60 million, enough to put him in sixth place behind Oprah Winfrey (No. 4 at $82 million) and Ellen DeGeneres (No. 5, at $70 million).
