A spokeswoman for the Federal Security Service, which includes the Coast Guard, said she had no immediate information on the incident.

Pickpockets Who Targeted Paris Tourists Arrested

French police have arrested a gang of pickpockets who dressed like tourists in order to target visitors — mostly Asian tourists — to Paris’ most famous museums and monuments.

The group was sophisticated, dangling cameras from their necks to blend in, always buying entry tickets and slipping away unnoticed. They operated at the Louvre, the Musee d’Orsay, the Eiffel Tower and the Chateau de Versailles, bringing in as much as 2,000 euros ($2,700) per day by grabbing the wallets of tourists, according to Commissioner Stephane Gouaud.

He said a group of fewer than 10 people was arrested Tuesday after a weekslong investigation. But he warned that other pickpockets are no doubt still at large.

The group arrested this week loitered in the most visited areas of the attractions they targeted, hanging out near the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo in the Louvre, Gouaud said.

Between language and cultural barriers and the fact that many tourists are only in town for a short period, Gouaud said the thefts were almost never reported, complicating the investigation.

Obama ‘reaches out’ to Iranian president and sets stage for first meeting since 1979 revolution

President Barack ObamaPresident Barack Obama has admitted exchanging letters with the Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, in a move which could set the stage for the first meeting between a U.S. and Iranian leader since Iran’s 1979 revolution.

It is hoped a meeting could lead to a solution in the row over Iran’s nuclear weapons programme, which Obama said is ‘larger than the Syrian crises’.

Foreign secretary William Hague is also said to be due to meet Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s minister of foreign affairs, at the UN general assembly meeting in New York.

But Obama admitted that it would not be easy.

In a television interview aired on ABC News, on Sunday, when asked whether he and Rouhani had ‘reached out’ to each other, Obama confirmed that they had exchanged letters, the Guardian reports.

Obama said: ‘I have. And he’s reached out to me. We haven’t spoken directly…’

He added: ‘Negotiations with the Iranians is always difficult.

‘I think this new president is not going to suddenly make it easy.’

The answer of MFA spokesman Tigran Balayan to a question by “RFE/RL”

Տիգրան ԲալայանQuestion: The heads of the Foreign Ministries of Russia and the United States have come to an agreement about putting under international control the Syrian chemical weapons. What is Armenia’s position on that issue?

Answer: Armenia welcomes the proposals based on the agreement reached in Geneva between the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and the US Secretary of State John Kerry, which could lead to the elimination of chemical weapons and exclusion of its use in Syria and which could open the way to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis through peaceful means, putting an end to the sufferings of the Syrian people, including its integral part – the dozens of thousands of Syrian-Armenians.

The answer of Tigran Balayan, Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, to the ‘’Armenpress’’ News Agency

Տիգրան ԲալայանQuestion: According to Azerbaijani media, in an answer to an Azeri lobbying group’s question, the Foreign Minister of Romania has reportedly made an odd statement, which distorts the essence of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and its settlement process. How would you comment?

Answer: It is hard to believe that high ranking official of any OSCE and EU member state could make a statement which contradicts the approaches of both the OSCE and the EU, which evidently contradicts also the five statements made during the last five years by the heads of the OSCE Co-Chair countries, the Presidents of Russia, the USA, France on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

We do not think that in order to please an Azeri lobbying organization a responsible person from any country could make an irresponsible statement which could only harm the negotiation process.

‘They were on their last straw of hope’: Moment two fishermen were rescued off Florida coast after EIGHT DAYS at sea

Bahamian menA normal day of fishing went awry for two Bahamian men after their boat capsized.

Helpless, two men clung to the boat’s hulls for eight days.

A passing freighter spotted the men clinging to the overturned boat. It is believed that had they not been spotted, the men would have died.

Coast Guard rescue swimmer Kyle Stallings said to The Sun Sentinel that the victims were completely waterlogged when found. He said their skin was deteriorating and their eyes were drooping.

The victims’ names were not released on Saturday. They are reportedly 56 and 57 years old.

The freighter that spotted the two stranded men contacted the US Coast Guard. It authorized the launch of an MH-65 rescue helicopter from Air Station Miami, WPTV reports.

The rescued men told the officers that they had consumed seawater, which can speed up dehydration, says The Los Angeles Times.

The men were taken to the DelrayMedicalCenter for treatment. They were not found with life jackets.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is now handling the case.

Iran Mulls Persian Cat as Next Animal Astronaut

persianwhite_01Iran’s hunt for its next animal astronaut may turn to the distinctive and locally named Persian cat, an official said Monday, in another possible step by the country’s ambitious aerospace program that has also raised Western concerns about spillover military applications.

The report by the official IRNA news agency comes seven months after Iran claimed it launched a monkey out of earth’s atmosphere and successfully returned it home. The account, however, faced international questions after photos appeared to show different monkeys in pre- and post-launch images.

A senior space program official, Mohammad Ebrahimi, said Iran’s next space capsule could carry the Persian cat, a long-haired, flat-faced breed named after Iran’s former name of Persia. He said the launch will happen by the end of Iran’s current year, which ends March 21. The report said a mouse and rabbit also are under consideration.

Iran says it wants to put its own satellites into orbit to monitor natural disasters in the earthquake-prone nation, improve telecommunications and expand military surveillance in the region.

Earlier this year, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said he wanted to be Iran’s first astronaut.

Heavy Clashes Among Syrian Rebels Near Iraq Border

syria-iraqActivists say heavy clashes between Syrian opposition fighters and Islamic extremist rebel factions near the Iraqi border have killed at least five people.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group says the ongoing battles Saturday in the town of Boukamal pit the al-Qaida-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq against more moderate rebel brigades.

Infighting among rebel groups, particularly between al-Qaida-linked extremist factions and more moderate units, has escalated in recent months. The violence undermines the opposition’s primary goal of overthrowing President Bashar Assad.

It also complicates efforts by the U.S. and its allies to provide greater support to the Syrian opposition.
