Viagra harvest shuts schools in Himalayas as locals rush to collect aphrodisiac fungus

Schools in rural Nepal have been left deserted as villagers scramble to harvest a rare high-altitude fungus said to boost sexual performance.

The reported aphrodisiac properties of Yarchagumba are so potent the fungus has been dubbed ‘Himalayan Viagra’, and demand in China and other Asian markets is such that it can fetch the equivalent of up to $20,000 per kilo.

Education officials in Jajarkot district – where around 8,000 students have joined the annual rush to hunt for the fungus in meadows high in the Himalayas – said there was ‘no point’ in keeping schools open.

Parents and teachers are also among those flocking to high meadows in search of the fungus.

‘In this district alone, about 8,000 students have left school for the expedition,’ Prakash Subedi, from the Jajarkot district eduction office, said in a report on ninemsn.com.

‘Without the students, there’s no point running the school so we close them. Even the teachers go to collect it,’ he said.

Mr Subedi added that extra classes were held during the autumn at some schools to make up for the time students miss during the spring tmie Yarchagumba harvest.

Although parents are urged not to take children with them when they go in pursuit of the rare fungus, schools’ pleas tend to fall on deaf ears because children can earn as much as 100,000 rupees – the equivalent of over $1,000 – during the harvest, Mr Subedi said.

The word Yarchagumba means ‘summer grass, winter worm’ in Tibetan.

While no research has been published on its aphrodisiac properties, Chinese herbalists believe Yarchagumba can enhance sexual performance.

The fungus is boiled in water to make tea or added to soups or stews, and is also reputed to cure a host of ailments.

Tuck in! People should eat more insects to fight hunger and reduce pollution, U.N says

The U.N. has new weapons to fight hunger, boost nutrition and reduce pollution.

But the answer to food crises around the world may not be that palatable – because they want people to eat insects.

The Food and Agriculture Organization on Monday hailed the likes of grasshoppers, ants and other members of the insect world as an underutilized food for people, livestock and pets.

A 200-page report, released at a news conference at the U.N. agency’s Rome headquarters, says 2 billion people worldwide already supplement their diets with insects, which are high in protein and minerals, and have environmental benefits.
Insects are ‘extremely efficient’ in converting feed into edible meat, the agency said.

On average, they can convert 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of feed into 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of insect mass. In comparison, cattle require 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds) of feed to produce a kilo of meat.

Currently, most edible insects are gathered in forests and what insect farming does take place is often family-run and serves niche markets.

But the U.N. says mechanization can ratchet up insect farming production. The fish bait industry, for example, has long farmed insects.

Insect farming is ‘one of the many ways to address food and feed security,’ the food agency said.

‘Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly,’ the agency said, adding they leave a ‘low environmental footprint.’

They provide high-quality protein and nutrients when compared with meat and fish and are ‘particularly important as a food supplement for undernourished children,’ it said.

Insects can also be rich in copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium and zinc, and are a source of fibre.

But the question on everyone’s lips is – are they tasty?

The report noted that some caterpillars in southern Africa and weaver ant eggs in Southeast Asia are considered delicacies and command high prices.

Mexican volcano spewing ash and lava threatens town as officials prepare to evacuate thousands

Thousands of people living in the shadow of this looming Mexican volcano have been placed on high alert following a dramatic increase in seismic activity from the Popocatepetl crater.

The 17,886ft active volcano near Mexico City, known as Popo, rumbled and shook during the night on Saturday, and has been spewing ash, lava and steam in recent days.

Officials have closed off an exclusion zone around the cone of the volcano and are poised to evacuate towns in its foothills as experts warned of plumes of steam reaching more than half a mile into the sky above the crater.

Authorities have alerted town in two central states as well as the capital, after Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Center elevated its alert level to Yellow Phase 3 – the fifth rung on a seven-stage warning scale.
Should the alert level rise thousands of people could be evacuated from the most vulnerable villages in the shadow of the peak. Shelters have been set up in case authorities are forced to evacuate residents.

Popocatepetl is an Aztec word meaning ‘Smoking Mountain’. Popo lay dormant for decades until it began putting out small eruptions of ash almost daily in 1994. These eruptions started strengthening two weeks ago and have increased even more this weekend.

The millions of people who have settled in and around the Mexican capital mean experts regard Popocatepetl as one of the most potentially destructive volcanoes in the world.

Justin Bieber and Bon Jovi Concerts Scene of Stadium Heist

130514102344-bieber-johannesburg-0512-story-topThieves targeted the city’s famed FNB Stadium following concerts this weekend by Justin Bieber and Bon Jovi in a heist that included them chiseling through the wall of a safe room and lowering themselves into the room with ropes. And using a system of ropes and ladders to get back out.

Authorities are not disclosing exactly how much cash was stolen, but they believe most of the money had been collected from numerous bars, food stands and merchandise outlets.

No one even noticed the cash was gone until early Monday morning.

“It wasn’t an impromptu incident,” Jacques Grobbelarr, a member of the stadium’s management team, told Eyewitness News South Africa. “There was definite planning. Looking at the scene and the place they broke into, it looks as if they were planning this for quite some time, probably a couple of days.”

Private investigators have been brought in to help police, and several employees have been given polygraph tests, as authorities believe only those with an intimate knowledge of the stadium’s layout and security plans could have pulled off a heist of this caliber. Officials are also combing through footage from 10 security cameras around the stadium, which remains on lockdown.

The stunning robbery came just hours after Bieber wrapped up a Sunday concert for more than 60,000 fans. After learning of the heist, Bieber denied any involvement, telling TMZ, “It’ wasn’t me.”

White House Files Politically-Motivated, Anti-Armenian Brief to US Supreme Court

By Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

The U.S. Supreme Court asked the Obama Administration last October if it should review a Federal Appeals Court decision that had struck down a California law (Section 354.4) extending the statute of limitations on Armenian Genocide-era life insurance claims.

The U.S. Solicitor General, the lawyer representing the United States government before the Supreme Court, filed a response last week. He urged the Supreme Court not to hear the appeal, and let stand the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that the California law “impermissibly” intruded into the federal government’s foreign relations powers.

Given Pres. Obama’s disappointing record of kowtowing to Turkey, particularly on Armenian Genocide issues, it is not surprising that the Administration’s brief went far beyond the question whether the Supreme Court should hear the appeal.

The U.S. Solicitor General erroneously claimed that:

— Contrary to the assertion of Armenian litigants, “California was not acting within an area of its traditional competence,” i.e., insurance regulation.

— The California law “intrudes upon substantial foreign affairs powers” of the federal government and leads to judgments “based on politically contentious events that occurred in the Ottoman Empire nearly a century ago”;

— Beyond simply intruding, this law would “disturb foreign relations” with Turkey. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush had opposed congressional resolutions on the Armenian Genocide, alleging that such measures would “undermine efforts to encourage improved relations between Armenia and Turkey”;

— Section 354.4 “would impermissibly intrude upon the federal foreign affairs power” in an area where the United States “acted in the post-World War I era to resolve certain claims by American citizens” through the Ankara Agreement (Oct. 25, 1934), American Treaty of Lausanne (August 6, 1923), and Treaty of Berlin and Claims Agreement (Aug. 10, 1922).

Several rebuttals are in order to the Solicitor’s General’s misguided and politically-motivated arguments:

— The California law does not intrude on the federal government’s foreign affairs powers as it simply attempts to regulate the obligations of insurance companies, an area of state competence and jurisdiction. This law provides an opportunity to right a historic wrong by forcing insurance companies to make long overdue payments to heirs of their deceased clients;

— German insurance companies are the defendants in this case, not Turkey, even though the latter filed a brief opposing the lawsuit. Remarkably, the Solicitor General’s brief mirrors some of the arguments advanced by Turkey.

— The Solicitor General selectively cites the opposition of Clinton and Bush administrations to congressional resolutions on the Armenian Genocide, ignoring the long-standing U.S. record on genocide recognition, including resolutions adopted by the House of Representatives in 1975 and 1984, Pres. Reagan’s Presidential Proclamation of 1981, and U.S. Government’s 1951 written statement to the International Court of Justice (World Court) acknowledging the Armenian Genocide.

— All three treaties/agreements cited by the Solicitor General are unrelated to the subject matter of this lawsuit. The Ankara Agreement and the American Treaty of Lausanne involve the Republic of Turkey, not German insurance companies. Also, the American Treaty of Lausanne lacks any legal standing as a non-ratified treaty. The Solicitor General undermines his own position by acknowledging that the California law “does not expressly conflict with the Ankara Agreement, the American Treaty of Lausanne, or the Treaty of Berlin and Claims Agreement,” which “addressed only the claims of those who were U.S. citizens at the time of World War I, not those who became U.S citizens after the war had concluded.”

The Solicitor General’s “legal opinion,” besides being flawed on all counts, is more of a political statement that deprives American citizens of their right to insurance claims.

One would hope that the Supreme Court will ignore the Solicitor General’s brief, and agree to hear the case, even though the chances are slim, because the Court accepts only a small percentage of cases submitted to it.

The Solicitor General’s overreaching arguments, if unchallenged, would have a chilling effect on all future genocide restitution efforts, particularly on the eve of the Armenian Genocide Centennial!

Armenian-American community leaders should take all possible measures to counter the Solicitor General’s politically-motivated arguments, by cutting all ties with the Obama Administration, organizing protests at presidential appearances, seeking congressional intervention to establish a federal commission for genocide restitution similar to that of the Holocaust, and amending Section 354.4 of the California law to circumvent the presented objections, no matter how flimsy. Moreover, the Armenian government should immediately withdraw its signature from the Armenia-Turkey Protocols which are repeatedly cited by the White House and U.S. courts as a pretext for opposing Armenian Genocide-related efforts, under the guise of wanting not to undermine Armenia-Turkey relations, which are non-existent!

It is now crystal clear that Pres. Obama’s deceptive use of ‘Meds Yeghern’ in his annual commemorative statements does not amount to an acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide, contrary to the gleeful pronouncements of some gullible souls.

Finally, the Armenian-American community should reconsider its strategy of seeking genocide acknowledgment through congressional resolutions which are not only unnecessary, but counter-productive, as these unsuccessful attempts undermine previously adopted resolutions and cast doubt on the long-established U.S. record of Armenian Genocide recognition.

India unveils vacccine for deadly diarrhoea virus

4Ռոտավիրուսի դեմ ստեղծվել է նոր պատվաստանյութScientists unveiled Tuesday an affordable vaccine against a deadly diarrhoea-causing virus that kills some 100,000 children in India every year.
Rotavirus, which causes dehydration and severe diarrhoea, is globally responsible for some 453,000 deaths annually and is particularly threatening in Africa and Asia, where access to urgent healthcare is often out of reach.
K. Vijaraghavan, secretary of India’s Department of Biotechnology which steered the hunt for an affordable rotavirus vaccine, said it was a product of international cooperation, although it has yet to be approved by New Delhi.
The vaccine named Rotavac will be manufactured by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech pharmaceutical firm which has said it has the capacity to mass produce 60 million doses after clearance is given. Each vaccination consists of three doses.
Rotavirus is blamed for causing up to 884,000 hospitalisations in India a year, at a cost to the country of 3.4 billion rupees ($72 million), scientists say.

Court of Appeal Upheld Editor of Khural in Jail (updated)

Բաքվի վերաքննիչ դատարանը մերժել է “Հուրալ” թերթի գլխավոր խմբագրի հաBaku Court of Appeal on May 13 rejected the appeal of the editor of the newspaper Khural Avaz Avaz Zeynally against the decision of the Baku Court of Grave Crimes and upheld the verdict.

March 12 Baku Court of Grave Crimes Court recognized Zeynally guilty under Articles 311.3.3 (bribery on a large scale), 311.4 (extortion by threats), 306 (non-enforcement of the judgment) and 213.1 (evasion of taxes in a significant amount) of the Criminal Code and sentenced him to nine years in prison.

Zeynally was arrested in October 2011 on the complaint of former MP Guler Ahmadova, which herself is now under arrest for fraud. During the trial, the allegations were not substantiated and virtually all of the defense’s arguments were rejected.

Lawyer Elchin Sadigov, commenting for Turan the appellate court’s decision, called it unfair and illegal.

According to him, the judicial structure was not entitled to consider the appeal because the court was biased. It is these judges that during the preliminary investigation dismissed the appeal against the decision to carry out searches in the office, apartment and car of Zeynally. In addition, the appellate court did not hold re-trial.

The need for this was explained with the fact that during the trial court neither Akhmedova, nor a number of other witnesses answered the questions of the defense.

Sadigov said that the decision of the Court of Appeal will be appealed to the Supreme Court. At the same time, a complaint will be sent to the European Court of Human Rights.

Zeynally himself said at the trial that he was arrested for political order and is a victim of free speech.

At the same time, he expressed his conviction that “someday those who fabricated his case will look from this iron cage and beg for mercy.” -06B-

The Surrender of Shusha, by Former Head of Azerbaijan Yagub Mamedov

050800035539On the 21st anniversary of the occupation of Shusha former head of Azerbaijan, Yagub Mamedov commented in an interview with Turan on reasons why the city was surrendered to the enemy. In his view, there were political and military reasons for the capture of Shusha.

At that time, Azerbaijan virtually had no regular army or military equipment or weapons, even though there was a Ministry of Defense. Time was needed to prepare armed forces.

With this in mind, and given the severe war situation, Azerbaijan took Iran’s proposal to hold a meeting between the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia, in Tehran.

Different countries and the OSCE tried to deal with the situation by reaching temporary truces for short periods, but each truce was violated.

Mamedov did not agree with the opinion that Iran provided military assistance to Armenia.

“Brokered by Iran, we signed a memorandum of ceasefire with Armenia, addressing the issue by political and peaceful means. However, external forces who did not want Iran’s mediation and the opposing political forces of Azerbaijan and Armenia, undermined the agreement and the town was occupied,” said Mamedov.

Another reason for the occupation was the severe situation in Azerbaijan.  “It was one of the hardest periods in the country’s history of the 20th century. Domestically, there were big controversies and struggle for power. The Soviet Union collapsed and the economy was destroyed. In such a situation, various forces were ready to do anything to come to power,” said Mamedov.

Did Mamedov face pressure from external and internal forces?  Responding to this question, Mamedov said the day after the leadership’s arrival, he called on all the opposition forces to cooperate.  At the talks, they discussed issues on joint activities to try to solve the Karabakh conflict and cease the power struggle.  “They agreed on the words, and acted differently. Streets and squares were filled with protesters. In other areas, they overthrew the administration heads, appointing their own men. I even appointed two members of the opposition as ministers, Tahir Aliyev for the Interior and Rahim Gaziyev for the Defense. However, the situation with each passing day was getting worse,” said Mamedov.

Was there a role of Russia in the return to power of Ayaz Mutalibov in May 14, 1992? To this question Mamedov answered:  “Certainly, Russia had its own interests. In the occupation of Shusha, it was a large part of Russia. In the occupation of Khojaly, the 366th Russian regiment was also involved,” he said, adding that representatives of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not arrive in Tehran, where there were negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. It was promised that the Ambassador of Russia would participate in the negotiations, but he did not come.

The situation worsened, with the return of Mutalibov to power on the one hand, and on the other, the struggle for power between different forces.

Self-defense units, most of which were created by the opposition, fought in the country. They did not obey the Ministry of Defense and did not want to operate under a single command.

What are the implications of these historical events, and who’s to blame? To this the then Head of State said, “I can not name specific perpetrators. Naming someone, one must provide evidence. Otherwise, they will say it is libel. However, then the political situation, the struggle for power, the actions of interested external forces did their business,” concluded Mamedov. -16/03B-

Three astronauts return to Earth after ISS mission

Canadian spaceman Chris Hadfield on Tuesday returned to Earth along with two other astronauts after a half year mission to the International Space Station that saw him become a global celebrity through his Twitter microblog.

Hadfield landed safely in the Kazakh steppe along with American Tom Marshburn and Russian Roman Romanenko aboard a Russian Soyuz-TMA capsule that had left the space station earlier Tuesday morning, mission control said.

The Soyuz touched down at 0231 GMT in the steppe south of the central Kazakh city of Karaganda, Russian mission control and NASA TV confirmed.

They were then placed in special chairs amid the long steppe grasses, covered in special thermal blankets and offered tea by the ground crews. All three appeared in good health.

Hadfield had captured the public imagination with regular updates on Twitter that gave an unprecedented insight into daily life in space and access to spectacular images taken from the ISS.

In a fitting climax to his mission, Hadfield posted a cover version of the David Bowie classic “Space Oddity” that showed him singing and even playing the guitar aboard the station. It became an immediate hit on YouTube.

Angelina Jolie undergoes double mastectomy

bb_horizontal_bigger19268914Editor’s note: Have you made the decision to have a preventative mastectomy? Send us your thoughts and experiences.

(CNN) — Actress Angelina Jolie announced in a New York Times op-ed article on Tuesday that she underwent a preventive double mastectomy after learning she carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which sharply increases her risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

“My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman,” Jolie wrote. “Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.”

Jolie’s mother, actress and producer Marcheline Bertrand, died of ovarian cancer in 2007 at the age of 56.

Jolie visits Syrian refugeesJolie visits Syrian refugees

In the Times op-ed, titled “My Medical Choice,” Jolie said she finished three months of medical procedures at thePink Lotus Breast Center in California on April 27 that included the mastectomies and reconstruction.

“I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made,” Jolie wrote. “My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent.”

BRCA stands for breast cancer susceptibility genes — a class of genes known as tumor suppressors, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Mutation of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes has been linked to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.

Oscar-winning film star

Jolie may be best known for title role in the “Laura Croft” series of films, but also won an Academy Award as best supporting actress in “Girl, Interrupted.” She also received a Golden Globe Award and SAG Award for the same role.

Jolie serves as a special enjoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and has visited refugee camps around the world.

The actress has been in a relationship with actor Brad Pitt since the mid 2000s and they are engaged. The couple has three biological and three adopted children.

In telling her story, Jolie acknowledged that surgery might not be the right choice for every woman.

“For any woman reading this, I hope it helps you to know you have options,” Jolie wrote. “I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed choices.”

But for Jolie, the decision ultimately came down to her kids.

“I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer,” she said.

It’s a pain Jolie knows all too well from losing her mother to the disease.

Muslim footballer Franck Ribery apoplectic after Bayern Munich team-mate drenches him in beer during title celebrations

f2Muslim footballer Franck Ribery has vowed never to speak to one of his team-mates again after he was drenched with beer during Bayern Munich’s title celebrations.

The Frenchman had told players to keep the alcohol away from him as they celebrated on the pitch after their 3-0 win over Augsburg.

But despite running away from the alcohol  – which is forbidden by his religion – Ribery was eventually collared by team-mate Jerome Boateng, who poured a large glass of beer over his head.

It is not the first controversy involving Ribery – the 30-year-old is due in court in June after sleeping with an underage Moroccan prostitute, although he claims he did not know she was 17.

Although he looked like he had taken it well at the time, Ribery reaction’s afterwards was extremely cold, as he said: ‘I won’t talk to Boateng again, he knows that I’m Muslim. I’m p***** off.’

The footballer converted to Islam to marry Wahiba, his childhood sweetheart – the couple have two daughters.

In the wake of the negotiations, the parties signed a number of the agreements aimed at the development and deepening of cooperation in a number of areas. In particular, signed were the “Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and Government of the Republic of Belarus on Cooperation in the Area of Protecting Rights of the National Minorities,” “Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and Government of the Republic of Belarus on Cooperation and Information Exchange in the Area of Nuclear Safety and
Radioactive Protection,” “Agreement on Cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia and Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Belarus,” Memorandum of Understanding on the Development of Cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia and Ministry of Industry of the Republic of Belarus, and Program for Cooperation in Years 2013-2014 in the Area of Physical Culture and Sport between the Ministry of Sport and Youth Issues of the Republic of Armenia and Ministry of Sport and Tourism of the Republic of Belarus.

At the meeting with the representatives of the mass media, Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Alexander Lukashenko made a join statement on the outcome of the negotiations.

Statement by President Serzh Sargsyan on the outcome of the negotiations with the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko

Distinguished Mr. President,
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am truly glad to welcome the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in our country. We are meeting regularly with President Lukashenko at the CSTO and CIS Summits, in the past also in the framework of EvrAzEs, and most recently we met at the December Session of the Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Moscow and before that also at the Summit of CIS where Belarus, in the framework of its Chairmanship, has been implementing comprehensive measures aimed at the further enhancement of cooperation.

These regular meetings allow us to discuss in a working manner and provide solutions to the issues on the Armenian-Belarus agenda. However the high level reciprocal visits remain the main booster of the interstate relations. I would like to once again greet President Lukashenko in Armenia where he is always a welcome guest.

Next month, we will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries. We are approaching this milestone not only with the corresponding level of bilateral cooperation but also with the strong realization that the positive experience of the interstate cooperation acquired through these years is our common property.

We also concur that the future of our relations should be in harmony with our historical past. We passed the hardships of the last century side by side, shoulder to shoulder fought in the Great Patriotic War, thousands of Armenian fell on the Belarus frontlines and hundreds of thousands covered their names with glory. Our friendship is cemented by the blood of our fallen heroes and we ought to preserve and multiply that legacy with care.

We have discussed the most diverse issues: we have spoken about economic and geopolitical issues, humanitarian ties. Naturally, we have also talked about the activities of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation which will hold its regular meeting in June. We have also recognized close interparliamentary relations in the framework of the specially formed Armenian-Belarus commission.

Special attention has been paid to our cooperation in the framework of international organizations. We have exchanged views on the development of cooperation in the framework of CSTO, spoke about processes going on at the CIS where we are ready to render the needed assistance to our Belarus colleagues to ensure success of their Chairmanship in the Organization.

I have also presented to Alexander Lukashenko the current stage of the NK peace process. I have underscored once again that the people of Karabakh want peace and opportunity to live freely in their historical homeland. They want equal opportunities will all those nations which have obtained international recognition of their sovereignty. I assured President Lukashenko that our position remains unchanged: we are ready for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

We have certain and promising programs in the area of economic and investment cooperation, mutual access of the goods and services to our respective markets, cooperation in the areas of tourism, agriculture, culture and science. We see great opportunities in the sphere of high technologies.

I trust President Lukashenko will agree with me that numerous contacts before this visit held on different levels contributed also to the signing a while ago of a weighty package of documents. We anticipate that they will provide the anticipated impulse to the bilateral cooperation. Thus, Mr. President, the visit is timely and is doomed to be a success.

I once again welcome the President of Belarus to Armenia and give him the floor.

‘I will always love youuuuuuuuu’: Woman kicked off plane for refusing to stop singing Whitney Houston song

p1An American Airlines pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger refused to stop singing Whitney Houston’s hit song I Will Always Love You.

The solo performance began shortly into the flight from Los Angeles to New York and her crooning quickly became too much for passengers and staff on the domestic flight last Thursday.

The pilot was forced to change course halfway through the six hour flight and make an unscheduled stop at Kansas City so officers could escort the woman from the plane.

Despite staff telling passengers they could not take photographs while on board the aircraft, one managed to briefly film the woman being escorted down the aircraft’s aisle in handcuffs – still singing the 1990s pop song.

The woman was interviewed and later released without charge.

While the song she chose to entertain her fellow passengers with is best known for Whitney Houston’s cover in the film The Bodyguard, it was originally released by country singer-songwriter Dolly Parton in 1974.

The original I Will Always Love You received positive comments from critics and reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart two times.

This made Parton the first artist ever to earn a number one record twice with the same song as a singer, and three times as a writer.

But it was not until Houston’s cover of I Will Always Love You in The Bodyguard movie that the song became an international hit.

The Bodyguard’s original soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year and I Will Always Love You became the best-selling single by a female artist in music history.

I quit for my wife after tragedy, says Ferguson

ֆերգյուսոնAlex Ferguson has revealed that loyalty to his wife, Cathy, was the key factor in his decision to retire from football management at the end of the current season.

The 71-year-old Scot enjoyed an emotion-charged farewell in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City at Old Trafford on Sunday, his last home game after more than 26 years in charge of the new English champions.

“Around last Christmas,” said Ferguson, when asked when he had decided to bring an end to his reign.

“Basically, things changed when Cathy’s sister died. She is isolated a lot now and I think a lot of the time, for 47 years, she has been the leader of the family, looked after our three sons and sacrificed herself for me.

“Now she has the grandchildren, and they all dote on her, but now she has lost her best friend — her sister — so that was important.

“I think it is also important to go out as a winner. That is really important at this club. It is all I ever wanted to do here — be a winner.”

Pyrethrum

երիցուկPyrethrum refers to several Old World plants of the genus Chrysanthemum (e.g., C. coccineum) which are cultivated as ornamentals for their showy flower heads. Pyrethrum is also the name of a naturalinsecticide made from the dried flower heads of Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium and Chrysanthemum coccineum.

Some members of the Chrysanthemum genus, such as the following two, are placed in the Tanacetum genus instead by some botanists. Both genera are members of the daisy (or aster) family, Asteraceae. They are all perennial plants with a daisy-like appearance and white petals.

  • երիցուկ1Tanacetum cinerariifolium

    T. cinerariifolium is called the Dalmatian chrysanthemum, denoting its origin in that region of the Balkans (Dalmatia). It looks more like the common daisy than other pyrethrums. Its flowers, typically white with a yellow center, grow from numerous fairly rigid stems. Plants have blue-green leaves and grow to 45 to 100 cm in height. The plant is economically important as a natural source of insecticide. The flowers are pulverized and the active components, called pyrethrins, contained in the seed cases, are extracted and sold in the form of an oleoresin. This is applied as a suspension in water or oil, or as a powder. Pyrethrins attack the nervous systems of all insects, and inhibit female mosquitoes from biting. When present in amounts less than those fatal to insects, they still appear to have an insect repellent effect. They are harmful to fish, but are far less toxic to mammals and birds than many synthetic insecticides and are not persistent, beingbiodegradable and also decompose easily on exposure to light. They are considered to be amongst the safest insecticides for use around food. Kenya produced 90% (over 6,000 tonnes) of the world’s pyrethrum in 1998, called py for short. Production in Tanzania and Ecuador is also significant. Currently the worlds major producer is Tasmania, Australia.

  • Tanacetum coccineum

    C. coccineum, the Persian chrysanthemum, is a perennial plant native to Caucasus and looks somewhat like a daisy. It produces large white, pink or red flowers. The leaves resemble those of ferns, and the plant grows to between 30 and 60 cm in height. The flowering period is June to July in temperate climates (Northern Hemisphere). C. coccineum also contains insecticidal pyrethrum substances, but it is a poor source compared to C. cinerariifolium.

  • Other species, such as C. balsamita and C. marshalli, also contain insecticidal substances, but are less effective than the two species mentioned above.

Insecticides

Sprays

Pyrethrum was used for centuries as an insecticide, and as a lice remedy in the Middle East (Persian powder, also known as “Persian pellitory”). It was sold worldwide under the brand Zacherlin by Austrian industrialist J. Zacherl.

The flowers should be dried and then crushed and mixed with water. Pyrethrum can be harmful to humans.

  • Pyrethroids are synthetic insecticides based on natural pyrethrum (pyrethrins); one common example is permethrin. A common formulation of pyrethrin is in preparations containing the synthetic chemical piperonyl butoxide: this has the effect of enhancing the toxicity to insects and speeding the effects when compared with pyrethrins used alone. These formulations are known as synergized pyrethrins.

Companion planting

Because Chrysanthemums contain pyrethrums, they are used as companion plants, to repel pest insects from nearby crops and ornamental plants.[4] They are thought to repel aphids, bed bugs (Cimex lectularius), leafhoppers, spider mites, harlequin bugs, ticks, pickleworms and imported cabbage worms, among others that are in gardens and farms. For example, they are planted among broccoli plants for protection from several common insect pests.

NY Times bureau chief expelled from Pakistan

2New York Times-ի աշխատակիցը վտարվել է ՊակիստանիցThe New York Times bureau chief in Pakistan was expelled from the country early Sunday after being ordered to leave for unspecified “undesirable activities”.

Declan Walsh, who was hired by the newspaper last year after covering Pakistan for British newspaper The Guardian since 2004, was handed an expulsion order at his home at 12:30 am, according to the Times.

“Here I go. Hard to believe this is happening,” the 39-year-old tweeted early Sunday after filing his last report on the country’s landmark general elections.

The expulsion order stated: “It is informed that your visa is hereby cancelled in view of your undesirable activities,” according to the Times.

“You are therefore advised to leave the country within 72 hours.”

Walsh has written about the country’s political strife, its insurgency and its sometimes tense relations with the United States.

Bangladesh to raise garment workers’ minimum wages

1Բանգլադեշում կարի գործարանների աշխատակիցների աշխատավարձերը կբարձրÕBangladesh has set up a panel to raise the minimum wage for millions of garment workers, a minister said Sunday, as tens of thousands protested over poor conditions highlighted by a series of disasters.

“We’ve set up a minimum wage board for the garment sector. We did it in view of the workers’ demand to hike their salaries,” textile minister Abdul Latif Siddique told AFP.

A typical Bangladeshi garment worker takes home less than $40 a month, a wage that Pope Francis has condemned as akin to slave labour. Their minimum wage was last raised — by 80 percent — in November 2010.

The panel will include union representatives as well as factory owners, Siddique added. “There is no doubt the salaries will be hiked,” he said.
