Chinese football fan, 39, dies on his sofa after ‘staying up for three nights to watch World Cup’

A football fan in China has died of a stroke that doctors believe was brought on by him staying awake for three successive nights to watch the World Cup.

Zhou Meng, a 39-year-old from Shanghai, collapsed on his sofa after suffering a stroke while watching the Saturday night match between Uruguay and Costa Rica.

He had previously stayed up for the whole of Thursday and Friday night to watch live coverage of the tournament – which is being held in Brazil – while working during the daytime.

He was rushed to the Shanghai No. 10 People’s Hospital after suffering a stroke and was pronounced dead several hours later.

According to Gao Liang, director of the hospital’s neurosurgery department, the patient had a history of high blood pressure.

Mr Gao said people with high blood pressure and heart conditions are more vulnerable to brain haemorrhages when events make them excited or emotional.

Indian teenager is worshipped because he has a seven inch TAIL – but may need it removed as he’s unable to walk

Arshid Ali Khan

An Indian teenager is worshipped as a god because he has a 7ins ‘tail’.

Arshid Ali Khan, 13, has become a divine symbol in the state of Punjab.

Locals have hailed him a reincarnation of the Hindu monkey god Hanuman – and refer to him as Balaji.

However, Arshid has to use a wheelchair and he is considering having the ‘tail’ removed.

Arshid lives with his grandfather, Iqbal Qureshi, and two uncles, after his father died when he was four and his mother remarried.

Arshid’s home has been converted into a temple where his devotees come to visit him to receive his blessings and touch his ‘tail’.

However, Arshid often struggles to balance his time with his faithful devotees and attending school and playing with his friends.

Despite his supposed powers, Arshid has to use a wheelchair and suffers from an undiagnosed disorder.

This month he is due to see a doctor who has said he can successfully remove the appendage – but his family are sceptical and say they would rather he kept his tail than undertake a risky operation.

‘I don’t mind being called Borat if it means I am going to be famous’: Introducing the Kazakh factory worker whose YouTube breakdancing routines could spell stardom

Աջդոս Իբրաև

What started out as a joke among colleagues during the odd lunchbreak has turned into an online following by thousands.

Ajdos Ibraev, from Kazakhstan, has amassed an extensive fan base after videos of him breakdancing while working at a factory went viral on YouTube.

And the 26-year-old couldn’t be more pleased with his newfound fame – for his ambition is to become bigger than Borat.

He began his dance routines by entertaining the workers during his lunchbreak at the factory where he works in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

His antics went viral after a colleague filmed his moves and posted the footage online.

In the video, Mr Ibraev can be seen moving to the beat of ‘Do it all night’ by Darius and Finla, while wearing an orange high visibility jacket.

It is one of numerous routines he performs at weddings, social functions and dance groups.

He now hopes the success of his video will give him the wider audience he craves.

Russian television reporter killed in Ukraine

Ուկրաինայում ռուս լրագրող է զոհվել

A Russian television reporter was killed Tuesday while covering the crisis in Ukraine, according to state-run media.

Igor Kornelyuk, a correspondent with Russia’s state-run VGTRK, came under mortar fire along with his crew near the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk, according to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, a regional security bloc.

Kornelyuk later died at a Luhansk hospital, said ITAR-Tass, a Russian government news agency.

“This death is yet another horrid reminder that not enough is being done to protect journalists who risk their lives reporting from conflict zones in Ukraine,” said Dunja Mijatovic, the OSCE’s representative on freedom of the media.

Mijatovic also said the crew’s sound engineer, Anton Voloshin, is missing.

Much of the conflict has been centered in Luhansk. On Monday, hundreds of pro-Russian militants carried out a coordinated assault on a border guard base there. Five of those militants were killed in the attack, said Oleg Slobodyan, the spokesman for the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service. Seven people were also killed Monday in a separate attack at a Luhansk government building, health officials said.

17.06.2014

Your Excellencies,

On behalf of “SOS Afrikyan Club Building” civic initiative we would like to draw your attention to the attempt by the Armenian Government of breaking the Convention for the Protection of the Architectural Heritage of Europe (Granada, 3.10.1985), ratified by the National Assembly of Armenia on 21.10.2008. According to Article 5 of the Convention, “Each Party undertakes to prohibit the removal, in whole or in part, of any protected monument, except where the material safeguarding of such monuments makes removal imperative. In these circumstances the competent authority shall take the necessary precautions for its dismantling, transfer and reinstatement at a suitable location.”

The Afrikyan Club Building is a unique late 19th-20th century structure listed among architectural heritage of national importance. According to N1616-N decision of the RA Government dated 7.10.2004, the Club building was subject to replacement. This decision, however, has lost its power after the ratification of the above mentioned Convention guided by Article 6 of the Armenian Constitution.

We are deeply concerned by the fact that since 2011 the Government of Armenia, particularly the Ministry of Culture, has been ignoring our pledges to act in line with its international commitments, therefore to annulate its decision about replacement of the monument and undertake the protection and conservation of the sight. Particularly, starting from June 9, 2014 the contractor agency started to dismantle the building.  Thanks to the efforts of a few dozens of citizens, professionals and media it has been possible to abort the dismantling attempts so far. However, at any moment the dismantling may be re-launched. We are working in various layers: legal processes, awareness raising and public mobilization, all-day-long presence at the sight by shift, and other actions.

“SOS Afrikyan Club Building” civic initiative involves activists, professionals, media and NGOs which have been actively engaged in series of civic movements on cultural, environmental, public space and human rights causes, such as Mashtots Park civic struggle, Save Open-Air Hall of Moscow Cinema, Save Teghut civic initiative, Public Transport movement, and more.

We urge you to act as guarantors of the respective European Convention, to closely monitor the situation and react accordingly. This could involve supporting statements and media interventions, negotiations, public political pressure, etc.

Thank you for your consideration. We look forward to your reaction at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

“SOS Afrikyan Club Building” civic initiative

Turkish Denialists Fail to Block Genocide Speech at Australian Parliament

Հարութ-Սասունյան1

By Harut Sassounian
www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com

The Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee of Australia had invited this writer to speak at commemorative events in Sydney and Melbourne, and deliver a formal address at the New South Wales Parliament during the week of April 24.

On April 27, the Australian Turkish Advocacy Alliance sent a three-page letter to all Parliament members urging them to boycott my presentation. A Parliament member forwarded a copy of the letter to the Armenian National Committee of Australia in advance of my talk on April 29. The cleverly-worded letter, most likely written by the Turkish Embassy’s professional lobbyists, made several false claims and defamatory accusations.
The Turkish denialist group sought to import Ankara’s human rights restrictions to a democratic country like Australia by trying to muzzle not only this speaker’s right to free speech, but also the Parliament’s right to invite whomever it chose. Calling me a ‘propagandist’ who ‘benefits from conflict and hatred,’ the Turkish letter ‘strongly’ advised Parliament members not to attend my talk.

Gunes Gungor, Executive Director of the Australian Turkish Alliance, falsely reported that I am ‘related’ to Hampig Sassounian, simply because I shared his last name. Hampig was convicted of assassinating the Consul General of Turkey in Los Angeles in 1982. While the life of any human being is precious, Gungor sheds crocodile tears over the death of a single Turkish diplomat, ignoring the wholesale killings of 1.5 million innocent Armenians! How would Gunes Gungor like it if I were to accuse him of being related to several criminals I found on the internet, just because they shared the same last name?

Gungor in his letter also badmouthed the distinguished jurist Raphael Lemkin who coined the term ‘genocide’ based on his detailed studies of the extermination of Armenians by the Ottoman Turkish government. In a desperate search for any reason to tarnish Lemkin’s impeccable reputation, Gungor claimed that “towards the end of the meetings because of his aggressive comments he [Lemkin] was asked to leave the room.” Gungor did not even know how to spell Lemkin’s first name.

The Turkish propagandist finally attempted to draw a distinction between the Armenian Genocide and the Jewish Holocaust. After pretending to be an expert on the Armenian Genocide, Gungor confessed his ignorance by stating that “much about the late Ottoman Empire has yet to be learned and many conclusions have yet to be drawn.”

Despite Gungor’s attempts to undermine my address, Parliament members and guests, including scholars, elected officials, and Jewish community leaders gave me a standing ovation. Surprisingly, Gungor showed up at the Parliament to hear me speak, not trusting his own ability to have the event cancelled. While members of the audience were given ample time to ask any question they wished, Gungor and his two Turkish colleagues did not ask a single question. More surprisingly, as the three Turks were leaving the Parliament hall, one of Gungor’s colleagues was overheard saying, “on nights like these, I wonder what we are doing here!”

My other talks took place with packed audiences without disruption. According to the ANC of Australia over 1,100 people attended my first talk on April 24 in Sydney. I gave a second talk the next night in the same city. I then spoke at a similar event on April 27 in Melbourne at the presence of around 500 guests.

The only sour note during my journey was Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s message sent to the Sydney commemoration. Taking a page from Pres. Obama’s playbook, Abbott used every other word (horror, tragedy, terrible events, lost lives) except for genocide in his brief message. Vache Kahramanian, Executive Director of the ANC of Australia, wrote to the Prime Minister, telling him that his message will not be read to the audience because it is “of great insult to the Armenian-Australian community with its blatant omission of the Genocide word.” Kahramanian reminded the Prime Minister of his previous year’s message while he was opposition leader in which he had properly characterized the Armenian Genocide. In contrast to the Prime Minister, Australia’s Treasurer, Joe Hockey, the country’s most senior government minister, issued a formal statement clearly acknowledging the Armenian Genocide.

I left Australia greatly impressed with the political activism of the Armenian community of 50,000 which runs circles around the much larger Turkish community of over 200,000.
