UN: Wars Internally Displace 33.3 Million in 2013

A record 33.3 million people worldwide were displaced by conflict and violence inside their own nations in 2013, U.N. and Norwegian officials said Wednesday.

The increase of 4.5 million above the 2012 total was driven largely by Syria’s civil war, now in its fourth year, which activists estimate has killed 150,000 people.

The heads of the U.N. refugee agency and Norwegian Refugee Council reported that 8.2 million fled their homes in the last year, including about 3.5 million in Syria alone. The other two-thirds of the 33.3 million displaced by war worldwide had fled in previous years.

Every 60 seconds another family within Syria flees the civil war, according to the figures.

Giant 11-mile trench is dug on Iraqi border with Syria to stop Islamic militants crossing into the country

cameron-sad_244903kA giant trench is being built on Iraq’s border with Syria to prevent militants and smugglers passing into the country.

The trench, the work of the Kurdistan Regional Government, is thought to be 11 miles (17 kilometres) long, two yards deep and three yards wide.

It has been reported that smugglers have started to operate in the border areas as they became insecure with Syrian authorities losing control of them.

The trench is on the northern Iraqi border near to Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region.

Kurdistan has largely managed to insulate itself against the violence afflicting Syria and the rest of Iraq.

But the digging of the ditch has proved controversial with some political parties, who have described it as unnecessary.

Justin Bieber Is Accused of Attempted Robbery

Justin Bieber apparently just had another run in with the law. A representative for Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to media on Tuesday night, May 13 that the Canadian heartthrob was accused of committing an alleged robbery attempt.

The alleged victim reported the incident on Monday night at 10:30 P.M. West Coast time and was interviewed on Tuesday night. Police believe that the alleged victim was not injured during the alleged robbery attempt. By late Tuesday, Bieber has not been interviewed and he was not arrested.

The 20-year-old star reportedly suspected that she took photos of him with her phone. He asked for the phone so he could delete the photo, but the woman refused to give it and put it in her purse.

According to the woman, she and Bieber then had a wrestling battle. The pop star ended up getting the phone, but it was locked. She unlocked it and showed him that she took no photos. The woman allegedly told Bieber that she and her daughter only wanted to said hello to him.

Obama Listens to Repeated References To Armenian Genocide at Shoah Gala

Հարութ Սասունյան
By Harut Sassounian

On May 7, I attended a very impressive benefit gala at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza hotel in Los Angeles, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the USC Shoah Foundation which archives the testimonies of survivors and witnesses of the Jewish Holocaust, the Armenian, Cambodian and Rwandan genocides, and the 1937 Nanjing Massacre.

Internationally acclaimed Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg, after filming Schindler’s List, established the Shoah Foundation to collect and preserve the personal accounts of survivors and other witnesses of the Holocaust. In 2006, the Shoah Foundation became part of the University of Southern California and currently holds 52,000 video testimonies in 34 languages, representing 58 countries. It is the largest archive of its kind in the world.

The gala was attended by Pres. Obama who received the “Ambassador for Humanity” award. Also in attendance were Samuel Jackson, Octavia Spencer, Barbra Streisand, Liam Neeson, and Bruce Springsteen who performed two of his poignant songs, “Promised Land,” and “Dancing in the Dark.”

In 2010, the Armenian Film Foundation and J. Michael Hagopian signed a historic agreement with the Shoah Foundation to digitize, preserve, and disseminate filmed interviews with survivors and witnesses of the Armenian Genocide. Last month, 400 digitized copies of the Armenian testimonies were delivered to USC Shoah Foundation’s Institute for Visual History and Education. By the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide on April 24, 2015, the Armenian testimonies, after they are translated, subtitled, and indexed, will be made available along with eyewitness accounts of the Holocaust and other genocides to 50 institutions (including the US Holocaust Museum) in 30 countries.

Nearly 100 Armenian-Americans attended the May 7 gala, raising over $100,000 for the Armenian collection at Shoah. During the evening’s program, several speakers made references to the Armenian Genocide. Spielberg was the first to announce that the Armenian Genocide testimonies were to be included in the Shoah archives. A video shown to the attendees featured several photographs of J. Michael Hagopian, genocide survivor Paul Andonian, and Armenian deportees on a death march. Shoah Foundation Executive Director Stephen Smith also spoke about the Armenian Genocide, acknowledging the presence of Yevnige Salibian, a 104-year-old genocide survivor from Aintab. Banquet host comedian Conan O’Brien, after acknowledging Mrs. Salibian’s presence from the podium, walked over to her table when the gala ended and had a picture taken with her.

As an honored guest, Salibian was seated next to TV celebrity Kim Kardashian. The following day, Kardashian posted on social media her photograph with Salibian, adding the following message: “Honored to be at the USC Shoah Foundation event to support Armenian Genocide testimonies. I’m sitting next to the most inspiring 100-year-old Armenian Genocide survivor.” Within few days, her posting received close to 400,000 ‘likes’ and almost 5,000 comments on Instagram, and 110,000 ‘likes’ on her facebook page.

Despite repeated references to the Armenian Genocide from the podium, Pres. Obama did not make any direct references to Armenians or the Armenian Genocide in his 18-minute speech — nor was he expected to do so! However, the President made indirect references to genocides other than the Holocaust, without specifying them:

— “I want to say a special word to the survivors who are with us this evening, not just of the Holocaust, but as Steven [Spielberg] noted, survivors of other unimaginable crimes.”

— “If the memories of the Shoah survivors teach us anything, it is that silence is evil’s greatest co-conspirator. And it’s up to us — each of us, every one of us — to forcefully condemn any denial of the Holocaust.”

— “You [Spielberg] …documented the experience not only of the Holocaust, but of atrocities before and since…. To you and everybody at the Shoah Foundation, and for all that you’ve done, for setting a light, an eternal flame of testimony, that can’t be extinguished and cannot be denied, we express our deepest gratitude.”

Armenians do not need to press Pres. Obama to explicitly refer to the Armenian Genocide. Another US President, Ronald Reagan, has already acknowledged it in his Presidential Proclamation of April 22, 1981. It is unnecessary to insist that every US President make the same acknowledgment year after year. Pres. Obama may consider using the term Armenian Genocide not for the sake of Armenians, but to uphold his own integrity by keeping the solemn pledge he made as a presidential candidate. Only then could he fully qualify as an “Ambassador for Humanity.”

china-man1

A Chinese man has turned himself into a human punch bag with people paying money to hit him as hard as they can.

Xie Shuiping, 48, offers up himself to people on the streets and in bars and nightclubs, giving them the chance to punch him in the stomach three times.

Mr Xie, of Wuhan city in Hubei province, says he can earn around 20,000 yuan (£1879) a month, enough to make a decent living out of it.

He started his career as a human punch bag in 2004 in a promotional show at a supermarket, where he allowed audience members to hit him over the head with wine bottles.

From then on, he started to earn money by allowing people to hit him as hard as they can.

According to Mr Xie, each of his ‘performances’ last around 20 minutes with paying customers allowed to punch his stomach three times.

Nigeria and Boko Haram Enter Talks on Kidnapped Girls

Talks are underway between Nigerian officials and senior leadership of Boko Haram, the chairman of the Nigerian president’s Boko Haram “Dialogue Committee” confirmed exclusively to ABC News.

Kabiru Tanimu Turaki would neither confirm nor deny that the talks are with the specific individuals holding the kidnapped girls, only the group’s senior leaders.

Turaki made a distinction between “talking” and “negotiating,” saying at this point the sides are not negotiating for the return of the imprisoned group members in exchange for the schoolgirls. There are more than 4,000 Boko Haram members in detention, according to the Nigerian Interior Ministry.

The development comes one day after the Islamic terrorist group released video purportedly showing about 100 of the 276 girls kidnapped last month. The search for the girls now includes U.S. surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft.

According to the Xinhua news agency, 40 people were gathered in the house at the time of the collapse earlier today.

The Qingdao government information office said that authorities were investigating the collapse.

China’s eastern coastal and southern regions have been drenched by heavy rains in recent days.

Nigeria abducted girls: Boko Haram leader claims captives converted to Islam

նիգերիացի աղջիկներ

A Boko Haram video emerged Monday purportedly showing some of the kidnapped Nigerian girls in Muslim headdresses and the terror group’s leader declaring they have converted to Islam.

The video, released by French news agency Agence France-Presse, was shot in a nondescript bush area and showed about 100 girls.

In the 27-minute footage, the terror group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, says he is willing to exchange the schoolgirls for Boko Haram prisoners.

It shows girls dressed in black and gray hijabs, and reciting the Quran as they make Islamic declarations of faith.

It’s the first purported sighting of the girls abducted last month in the northern town of Chibok. A convoy of Islamist militants drove to a school, seized nearly 300 girls and fled into the night.

Newly-discovered active volcano could erupt underneath ice in Antarctica and add to effects of global warming, say scientists

անտարկտիկա

A newly-discovered active volcano could erupt underneath Antarctica, melting the ice from below and compounding the effects of global warming, according to scientists.

Researchers discovered the volcano underneath the ice after setting up devices to measure tectonic activity across Marie Byrd Land in the west of the continent.

Scientists had intended to use the seismograph machines to help in their efforts to weight the ice sheet – only to find that a volcano was in fact forming underneath the ice.

Volcanic activity was discovered around 30 miles from Antarctica’s highest volcano, Mount Sidley, and although an eruption would be unlikely to breach the ice – the accompanying heat could have an effect on the landscape.
Even a sub-glacial eruption would still be able to melt ice, creating huge amounts of water which could flow beneath the ice and towards the sea – hastening the flow of the overlying ice and potentially speed up the rate of ice sheet loss.

Thousands of Syrians Enter Homs After Rebels Leave

հոմս

Thousands of Syrians have walked into war-battered parts of the central city of Homs for the first time in nearly two years, checking on their homes after rebels left as part of a deal allowing them to safely withdraw as government troops took the city.

Men and women fanned out through rubble-strewn streets Saturday, past partially flattened buildings. Many emerged carrying clothes and belongings. Some accused rebels of looting their homes. Smaller crowds made the journey Friday.

Government troops blockaded the rebels, alongside hundreds of civilians, in the area as the country’s civil war raged around them. Hundreds of fighters surrendered their Homs stronghold this week in a deal that allowed them safe passage to other rebel-held areas.

Activists say the 3-year-old Syrian conflict has killed more than 150,000 people.

Pope calls on the world’s governments to bring in an ‘ethical mobilisation’ to help the poor and redistribute wealth

Պապը կոչ է արել համաշխարհային առաջնորդներին օգնել աղքատներին

Pope Francis has told the head of the United Nations that it must do more to help the poor and redistribute wealth.

In a meeting with the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon today, he called on the world’s governments to promote an ‘ethical mobilisation’ of solidarity with those less well-off and adopt a new spirit of generosity to address the causes of poverty and hunger.

The pontiff made his comments in an address to Mr Ban and the leaders of several U.N. agencies who were all meeting in Rome.

Pope Francis has consistently used his meetings with world leaders, including U.S. President Barack Obama, to champion the cause of the world’s poorest.

In the past 14 months since his election, Francis has issued several strong attacks on the global economic system, saying in one speech last September that it could no longer be based on ‘a god called money’.

China considers building a rail link to AMERICA: 8,000-mile journey would take less than two days and involve going through 125-mile undersea tunnel to Alaska

արագընթաց երկաթուղ

China is considering building an 8,000-mile high-speed rail link to America that would take less than two days to travel.

Travelling at around 217mph, the train would leave the north east of the country, run through Siberia and enter a 125-mile tunnel under the Bering Strait, the shortest crossing between Russia and Alaska.

It would then resurface and head south through Canada, before reaching its destination in the US.

It is unclear whether the American, Canadian or Russian governments have agreed to the proposals.

If completed, it would be 2,300 miles longer than the Trans-Siberian Railway, making it the longest train route in the world.

Even though the plans haven not been finalised, it is believed the project would be developed and financed by the Chinese, who have become global leaders in high-speed rail travel.

Philippines Detains 11 Chinese on Fishing Charges

չինական ծով

The Philippines said Wednesday it seized a Chinese fishing boat and its 11 crewmen on charges of catching endangered sea turtles in disputed South China Sea waters, prompting China to demand their release and accuse Manila of being provocative.

The boat was loaded with more than 350 endangered turtles that were confiscated when it was seized near territory known as Half Moon Shoal, Philippine maritime police Chief Superintendent Noel Vargas said.

China demanded that the Philippines release the boat, and Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying urged Manila to “stop taking further provocative actions.”

Vargas said the Chinese boat will be taken to the western Philippine province of Palawan, about 110 kilometers (70 miles) from Half Moon Shoal, and the fishermen will face charges of violating Philippine laws prohibiting catches of endangered green sea turtles.

Britney Spears Sued for Allegedly Breaking a Dancer’s Nose During Rehearsal

Բրիթնի Սփիրս

Britney Spears is at the center of a lawsuit. A female dancer named Dawn Noel is suing the singer for allegedly hitting her in the face during a rehearsal for “Work B**ch!” music video. The dancer says she suffered a nasal bone fracture that required surgery.

Britney showed up “in a disheveled and confused state,” the plaintiff says in the suit, “although the choreography involving Britney Spears was fairly basic, she was having difficulty learning the moves, performing dance steps and following simple directions.”

The pop star “twirled in an unbalanced and reckless manner, arms extended out to her sides and forcefully backhanded” Noel in the face. “A cracking sound” was heard in the studio, and the dancer “felt immediate intense pain and grabbed her nose.”

The plaintiff says they continued rehearsing the dance routine, but she was unable to bear the pain any longer and stopped working an hour later to seek medical help. The star’s camp offered to cover her medical bills, but the dancer received no money so far.

The dancer is suing Britney for serious physical and emotional damages including disfigurement to her nose as well as severe emotional distress and anxiety.
