Donning swimming caps and goggles, they stare wearily ahead as they stretch their arms by the side of an outdoor pool.

These middle-class children are among numerous overweight youngsters taking part in a gruelling fat camp at a university in Beijing, China.

They have been sent to the summer camp by their parents in a bid to get them into shape and to prepare them for the challenges of life in one of the world’s largest economies.

On a daily basis, they are forced to swim, run, lift weights and perform exercises under the supervision of strict Chinese trainers.

They are also required to undergo medical and weight checks by professional nurses at the facility.

Obesity is a growing problem among the burgeoning middle-class in China. According to recent studies, the country is now the second fattest in the world behind America.

Ukrainian, Russian Clubs to Be Kept Apart by UEFA

ֆուտբոլ

UEFA has decided to keep Ukrainian and Russian clubs from playing each other “until further notice” because of the continuing unrest between the neighboring countries.

European football’s governing body made the ruling “in light of the current political situation” after the Russian and Ukrainian associations “expressed concerns about safety and security.”

The UEFA emergency panel ruling means Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg and Ukrainian club Dnipro cannot be paired against each other in the Champions League third qualifying round draw on July 18.

UEFA also said a security assessment showed that the western city of Lviv and capital Kiev can continue to host matches.

Scientists name new mite discovered near Puerto Rico after JLO

ջենիֆեր լոպես

Pop singer Jennifer Lopez may be thinking life is funny after some scientists gave her name to a water mite species they discovered near Puerto Rico.

Biologist Vladimir Pesic of the University of Montenegro said in an email on Wednesday that the group was entertained during its research by the music of the Bronx, New York-born artist who has Puerto Rican roots.

Pesic calls it a small token of gratitude for the singer of hits such as ‘I Luh Ya Papi,’ ‘All I Have,’ and ‘Ain’t It Funny.’

Science Daily reports that nothing is known about the life cycle of the animals.

The new J.Lo species was collected nearly 70 m deep. It is the greatest depth from which Pontarachnid mites have been found until now.

Israel Launches Airstrikes After Telling Gaza Residents to Flee

Israel launched a new round of airstrikes today, targeting senior Hamas officials in the enduring conflict with militants in Gaza.

GAZA (1)The airstrikes come as the death toll for the nine-day conflict reached 208 – all but one of them Palestinians, many of them civilians and children. At least 1,550 people have been injured in Gaza since fighting broke out last week, health officials say.

Ahead to today’s airstrikes, tens of thousands of residents in Gaza received phone calls and leaflets advising them to evacuate their homes.

The latest Israeli barrage comes one day after Israel’s Cabinet approved a cease-fire measure proposed by Egypt. But after Hamas rejected the terms of the cease-fire and fired 47 rockets at Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unleashed his military again.

France Battles Against Bad Restaurant Food

Chefs at work in a French restaurant … what's causing the culinary crisis?Restaurant-goers in France will start seeing a funny little symbol on their menus this week: a skillet with a house on top, indicating your menu choice is made in-house.

It’s part of a new law meant to battle against the surprising amount of factory-made, pre-packaged food in French restaurants. France’s chief of consumer affairs, Carole Delga, told The Associated Press that the logo would better inform customers about what they’re getting, and highlight the country’s culinary traditions.

However, many in the restaurant industry say the law doesn’t go far enough, because it allows dishes made from frozen, pre-peeled or pre-cut products to count as home-made.

Parliament approved the law March 17, and it came into effect this week. Restaurants and catering companies have until January 1 to adapt their menus.

Turkish Counter-Efforts Help Publicize Genocide Centennial

Հարութ Սասունյան

By Harut Sassounian

www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com

Armenians in the US and around the world were needlessly alarmed by a recent article in the Turkish Hurriyet newspaper, titled: “Turkish Americans prepare ‘master plan’ for 2015.”

No one should be surprised that the Turkish government and affiliated organizations worldwide have been earnestly planning to counter commemorative activities being organized by the Armenian government and the Diaspora for the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide on April 24, 2015.

Tolga Tanis reported in Hurriyet’s July 5 issue that the Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) will invite Turkish-American groups to Washington in September to plan “proactive and active responses” to Armenian Centennial events.

ATAA reportedly will form Turkish “activist committees” to visit “lawmakers in each state, conduct social media campaigns, keep in touch with traditional media outlets, prepare online courses, and organize countrywide networking meetings for Americans.” Hurriyet also reported that ATAA will organize “at least 20 day-long conferences in partnership with local universities and with the participation of famous Turkish-Americans like Dr. Mehmet Oz and Coca Cola CEO Muhtar Kent.”

As part of its “reactive responses,” ATAA allegedly plans to counter:

— Articles, books and films on the Armenian Genocide;

— Panels, conferences and exhibitions organized by Armenians;

— “Anti-Turkish bills” in Congress.

Before Armenians get too excited about these purported Turkish schemes, the following questions must be asked:

— Is Hurriyet accurately reporting ATAA’s plans? The Turkish media is notorious for distorting facts and making up stories. Interestingly, no such announcement is found on ATAA’s website;

— If Hurriyet’s article is fully or even partly true, is it certain that ATAA will actually carry out any of its announced plans or is this simply a propaganda ploy or fundraising effort?

As a starter, it has come to our attention that at least one critical part of Hurriyet’s story is a falsehood! Ara Khachatourian, English Editor of Asbarez newspaper, reported that a spokesman for the prominent TV personality has denied that Dr. Oz is involved in any way in Turkish denialist activities. Likewise, I am trying to confirm if the alleged report about Coca Cola CEO Muhtar Kent’s involvement in genocide denial is accurate. It is noteworthy that Hurriyet has already amended its initial report, adding a disclaimer, possibly after complaints from Dr. Oz and Mr. Kent about the unauthorized and inaccurate use of their names: “The two individuals whose names are mentioned in the article above (Dr. Mehmet Oz and Coca-Cola CEO Muhtar Kent) are two prominent figures on a long list of accomplished Turkish Americans who will be invited to speak at community events. They have no knowledge of or involvement in ATAA’s plans.”

I wish Dr. Oz and Mr. Kent were actually involved in Turkish denialist efforts, which would have triggered a worldwide boycott of Dr. Oz’s TV show and Coca Cola products. This would have provided Armenians a golden opportunity for publicity on the Armenian Genocide Centennial that no amount of money could buy!

Moreover, my fervent hope is that Hurriyet’s article would turn out to be totally accurate and that ATAA would carry out fully all of the promised activities. The more often Turkish denialists raise the Armenian Genocide issue trying to counteract the established historical facts, the more they would be inadvertently publicizing the Genocide Centennial, and thereby disgrace themselves in the eyes of the world!

While Armenians are unable to make their voices heard loudly in the international arena, in an ironic twist, Turkey’s influential public relations firms in Washington would be of tremendous assistance! Equally helpful are the public pronouncements of Turkish leaders, such as the one by Prime Minister Erdogan on April 23, 2014, despite their denialist content. As an unintended consequence, ATAA’s anti-Centennial efforts would prompt the international media to pay ever greater attention to the continuing injustice suffered by Armenians, by providing more coverage to the planned Armenian commemorations.

Although Turkish counter-strategies should receive adequate scrutiny, Armenians should pay more critical attention as to whether they are preparing themselves appropriately to observe the Centennial in the global arena, given the immense loss of the 1.5 million martyrs of the Armenian Genocide. By being overly obsessed with the sinister actions of Turkish denialists, Armenians may not be focusing sufficiently on their own obligation to honor the sacred memory of the victims and demand justice!

Germany were so confident they were going to win World Cup they printed five million victory stamps BEFORE the final

Գերմանիա, ֆուտբոլից հետո Germany printed five million stamps commemorating their fourth World Cup title before the final on Sunday had even started.

The 60-cent stamps are due to go on sale this week after the first commemorative copies are offered to the players and staff.

If Germany had lost the final, the stamps, printed by Deutsche Post, would have had to be pulped.

The stamps were ordered by Germany’s Finance Ministry, which holds 21 per cent of Deutsche Post’s shares through the state-owned KfW bank.
Meanwhile, it was reported yesterday that a new German football shirt bearing the four stars for Germany’s four World Cup wins sold out within hours of the team’s triumph in Brazil.

Germany were crowned world champions on Sunday night and Adidas wasted no time in commemorating the achievement – by revealing a kit with four stars above the badge.

On Monday morning Adidas’ website was already displaying a ‘sold out’ sign next to the new shirts.

Libya Considers Calling for International Troops

libya-airport

Libya’s interim government says it is considering requesting the international community to send troops to the country after three days of fighting destroyed large parts of the capital’s airport.

In a statement posted on its official website early Tuesday, the government also urged all rival parties to cease hostilities, saying commanders who violate its orders would face charges of “crimes against humanity.” It added that a national committee would supervise the withdrawal of militias from the airport area to outside the city.

The government also said that 90 percent of the aircraft at the airport were hit in the shelling, while several buildings, including the customs house, were completely destroyed.

The fighting was some of the most intense seen in Tripoli since longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi was toppled in 2011.

World’s oldest bottle of mineral water uncovered: 200-year-old corked Selters flask found deep within the Baltic sea

world’s oldest bottle1

The world’s oldest bottle of mineral water has been uncovered from the depths of the Baltic Sea by Polish.

The 200-year-old flask, described as in a ‘good condition and still corked’, has the name ‘Selters’ inscribed in its stoneware.

Polish archaeologists found the 12 inch (30cm) bottle in shipwreck lying 12.2 metres (40ft) below water in the Gdańsk Bay close to the Polish coast.

Produced between 1806 and 1830, the brown bottle is an extremely rare find as most sealed flasks from that period contain either beer or wine.

‘We have not opened the bottle, we are not sure what it contains and what is the taste of the water which is 200 years old,’ said Tomasz Bednarz, National Maritime Museum archaeologist.

Apart from the bottle, the team managed to recover parts of ceramics, a small bowl and a few pieces of dinnerware.

Selters is a German luxury mineral water brand which gained popularity with Europe’s wealthy during the nineteenth century.

Rival Libyan militias battle for Tripoli airport

libya-tripoli-international-airport

Rival Libyan militias battled for Tripoli International Airport on Sunday, leaving nine people dead and 25 others wounded, the government said.

Shelling was threatening civilians as violence stretched along the airport road, which is dotted with residential neighborhoods. All flights in and out of the airport have been suspended.

While the government issued a statement calling for calm, Libya’s government is weak and militias outnumber and outgun its security forces. Many of the armed groups are on the state’s payroll.

These circumstances make it very difficult for the government to gain control over this latest increasingly volatile and violent situation.

Late Sunday morning, the sounds of fighting could also be heard in the vicinity of a Zintan base in a western suburb of Tripoli.

‘Don’t be sad. You did your best:’ Nine-year-old fan writes to Brazil’s captain David Luiz telling him not to be downhearted over his 7-1 defeat by Germany

David Luiz

He was reduced to floods of tears after his team was thrashed 7-1 by Germany on home soil in a result that broke Brazilian hearts.

But after Brazil captain David Luiz wept uncontrollably in the wake of his team’s devastating capitulation in the World Cup semi-finals, he has received some welcome support – in the form of an adorable letter from a young fan.

The former Chelsea defender, wearing the skipper’s armband in the absence of Thiago Silva, cried as he said ‘I just wanted to see my people smile’ after Brazil’s hopes of winning the tournament on home turf were dashed in humiliating fashion.

But his show of emotion after the final whistle had blown, prompted nine-year-old Ana Luz to pen him a letter – telling him not to be sad.

The child even showed he was still her sporting hero by drawing a small picture of him holding a trophy aloft.

Luiz, 27, who left Chelsea for Parish St Germain earlier this summer, was so touched by the letter that he posted it on Instagram.

Brazil’s World Cup campaign will come to an end tonight after they face the Netherlands in a third place play-off at the Estadio Nacional in Brasilia.

The tournament finally reaches its climax tomorrow when Argentina take on Germany in the Maracana Stadium, Rio de Janeiro.

UN Calls for Israeli-Palestinian Cease-Fire

իսրայելապաղեստինյան կոնֆլիկտ

The U.N. Security Council is calling for a cease-fire in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict centered on Gaza.

A council statement approved Saturday by all 15 members calls for de-escalation of the violence, restoration of calm and a resumption of direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians aimed at achieving a comprehensive peace agreement based on a two-state solution.

The press statement expresses “serious concern regarding the crisis related to Gaza and the protection and welfare of civilians on both sides.” It calls for respect for international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians.

The press statement, which is not legally binding but reflects international opinion, is the first response by the U.N.’s most powerful body, which has been deeply divided on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Vatican calls on to everyone to ‘pause for peace’ at the World Cup final (and insists there is no rivalry between Argentinian pope and his German predecessor!)

Pope Francis- Pope Benedict

The Vatican has called on spectators at Sunday’s World Cup final to ‘pause for peace’ before the game, while continuing to play down rivalries between Pope Francis and his predecessor.

A senior Vatican official asked football fans to take a moment before the final game at the Maracana stadium to remember those affected by war and poverty.

The official also sought to play down ‘amusing’ rumours of rivalry between Argentine Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict, a German, saying the two had not decided how to spend Sunday night.

Benedict, the source pointed out, is not a football fan, but added: “Let’s see. The current situation is unique”.

The Vatican’s spokesman said he did not believe Benedict, now 87 and living his retirement in seclusion in an ex-convent in the Vatican, would watch the match, because of the late hour.

Francis, on the other hand, is most definitely a football fan having been a keen supporter of San Lorenzo while archbishop of Buenos Aires.

A spokesman for the council said it would be up to each fan, each team and each organization, including soccer governing body FIFA, if, how and when they wanted to observe a moment of ‘silence or reflection or pause’ to remember those suffering.

Iraqi Kurds Take Over 2 Northern Oil Fields

iraq-kurdsKurdish security forces took over two major oil fields outside the disputed northern city of Kirkuk before dawn Friday, the Oil Ministry said, the latest move in a deepening a dispute with the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Oil Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad said Kurdish troops known as peshmerga also expelled the local workers from the Bai Hassan and Kirkuk oil fields. He declared the takeover “a violation to the constitution” and warned that it poses “a threat to national unity.”

There was no immediate comment from authorities in the Kurdish self-rule region of northern Iraq.

The already difficult relationship between the Kurds and Iraq’s central government has sharply deteriorated in recent days. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki accused the Kurds of harboring the Sunni militants who have overrun much of the country over the past month. A day later, authorities suspended all cargo flights to the Kurdish region’s two main airports.

Would YOU want to land here? China chops top off mountain for an airport with nail-bitingly terrifying runway… 2,000ft above sea level

Հեչի քաղաք

This is a new airport runway set to open in China next month.

Chinese architects levelled several mountain tops to build the spectacular £80m development in Hechi, a city in China’s southern Guangxi province.

Engineers managed to slice off the mountain tops to create a 1.4-mile runway that will provide a spectacular if nail-biting panorama for arriving passengers.

The airport, which is 2,200ft above sea level and has only one terminal and one runway, is so narrow that it can only accommodate three flights an hour – compared to the number that the mainland’s busiest airports handle on an hourly basis which is 20 times that.

Hechi is located in north-western Guangxi on the southern end of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, which is home to about four million people.

In the past, getting to Hechi required flying to the Liangjiang International Airport in Guilin and then travelling by road for more than 200km.

Work on the airport began at the end of 2008 and was completed at the end of last year.

When it goes into operation next month it will be a transit stop on the sole air route between the cities Chongqing and Haikou in Hainan province. If plans for extending the operation business work out, it might also add a flight from Guangzhou in the future.
