Italians ‘outraged’ by US weapons ad featuring Michelangelo’s David with a sniper rifle

Դավիթի արձան

A US weapons firm that turned Michelangelo’s most famous masterpiece – the David statue – into a gun-toting musketeer have come shot down by officials in Italy, with the country’s culture minister calling the move ‘offensive and illegal’.

Illinois-based weapon manufacturer ArmaLite used the iconic image of David in a new advertising campaign, manipulating the statue to make it appear to be holding a $3,300 AR-50A1 rifle.

The accompanying tagline reads: ‘A work of art.’

But the move has outraged Dario Franceschini, Italy’s minister of culture, who said he is pursuing legal action to have ArmaLite withdraw the campaign.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday, Franceschini said, in Italian, that the ad was illegal.

The superintendent of the State Museums of Florence, Cristina Acidini, elaborated on Franceschini’s comment, explaining that the image of David is copyrighted to Italy and can’t be used without permission.

Rare Jules Verne book describing moon landings 100 years before Neil Armstrong’s ‘giant leap’ and signed by Nasa ‘stars’ sells for £1,600

Ժյուլ Վեռն

A rare copy of a Jules Verne science-fiction novel, which imagined man landing on the moon more than 100 years before Neil Armstrong set foot its surface, has been sold for £1,600.

De La Terre a la Lune (From Earth to the Moon) was written in 1865 and tells the story of an attempt to fire man to the moon using an enormous gun.

In the book, part of Verne’s Voyages Extraordinaires (Extraordinary Journeys) series, three men are blasted into space from a launch site in Florida.

On their return from the mission they land back in the Pacific Ocean where they are rescued by the US Navy.

In recognition of the similarities between the story and the actual events of 1969, when Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon, the book was signed by a host of NASA experts.

Among the 25 signatures is that of German engineer Wernher von Braun, the man behind the Saturn V rocket which launched Apollo XI into space.

The book was snapped up by a private European collector for £1,600 at the Bloomsbury sale.

It was sold with a NASA-issued copy of Bill Anders’ famous photograph of Earth taken while orbiting the moon on Apollo VIII in 1968.

Foreign Military Mission Barred From Crimea

ukraine-trucksAn Associated Press reporter says pro-Russian forces refused to let a foreign military mission enter Crimea on Saturday.

After the officers had stopped, the armed men fired warning bursts of automatic weapons fire into the air to make other unidentified vehicles halt. No injuries were reported.

The multinational group of military officers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe was attempting to enter the embattled peninsula from the north. The armed men told them they had no authorization to enter Crimea.

The OSCE mission will likely return to the Ukrainian city of Kherson where it had spent the night, the AP reporter said.

Crimea Sets Referendum on Whether to Join Russia

crimea-referendumLawmakers in the embattled Crimean region of Ukraine have decided to hold a referendum March 16 on whether Crimea should become part of Russia.

“This is our response to the disorder and lawlessness in Kiev,” Sergei Shuvainikov, a member of the local Crimean legislature, said Thursday. “We will decide our future ourselves.”

The parliament in Crimea, which enjoys a degree of autonomy under current Ukrainian law, voted 78 with eight abstentions in favor of holding the referendum. Local voters will also be given the choice of deciding to remain part of Ukraine, but with enhanced local powers.

There was no immediate response from the Ukrainian central government to the vote. On Wednesday, Ukraine’s prime minister told The Associated Press that Crimea would remain part of Ukraine.

Million Dollar iPhone: Jewellers create a gold version of Apple’s flagship handset – complete with 700 diamonds

iPhone

Apple iPhones have the reputation for being fragile at the best of times, but a jeweller has created a model so expensive its unlikely its owner will want to take it out of the box.

The handset, built by London-based jewellery firm Alchemist, is the world’s most expensive iPhone with a £600,000 ($1 million) price tag.

Dubbed Million Dollar iPhone, the handset has a handmade, 24-carat gold bezel and is covered in 700 individual diamonds, totalling over seven carats.

The company said it set out to create an item that was so luxurious it would ‘redefine the meaning of grandeur’ and spent seven months making the bespoke device.

The navigation button is also made from 24-carat gold and has a two carat diamond cut into the centre.

Only two of the handsets will be sold, with prospective buyers being asked to formally register their interest on either of the company’s two websites, the-million-dollar-iphone.com and gold-alchemist.com.

OSCE Sending Military Observer Mission to Ukraine

զինվոր

A U.S. official says the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe will send a military observer mission to Ukraine at its request.

Daniel Baer, the chief U.S. representative to the OSCE, said 15 of its nations, including the United States, decided in Vienna on Tuesday to volunteer members for the mission, which Ukraine had asked for. He said it will head to Ukraine as early as Wednesday, with the goal of then traveling to Crimea.

On Saturday, heavily armed pro-Russian forces took over the strategic peninsula in Ukraine, surrounding its ferry, military bases and border posts. Two Ukrainian warships remained anchored in the Crimean port of Sevastopol, blocked from leaving by Russian ships.

The U.S. is preparing economic sanctions against Russia amid worries that Moscow is ready to stretch its military reach further into the mainland of the former Soviet republic.

The OSCE includes Russia, the United States, and all European countries.

Cara Delevingne, a favourite of the French fashion house, was joined by Chanel newcomer and fashion’s new darling (and little sister of Kim Kardashian) Kendall Jenner on the catwalk.

Karl, well known for his theatrical shows – which have previously featured giant icebergs and even an underwater kingdom – transformed the French capital’s Grand Palais into the world’s chicest and most luxurious grocery store.

At ICJ, Croatia Accuses Serbia of Genocide

Croatia is accusing its Balkan neighbor Serbia of genocide during fighting in the early 1990s as the former Yugoslavia shattered in spasms of ethnic violence, in a case at the United Nations’ highest court that highlights lingering animosity in the region.

Croatia is asking the International Court of Justice to declare that Serbia breached the 1948 Genocide Convention when forces from the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia attempted to drive Croats out of large swaths of the country after Zagreb declared independence in 1991.

It is not the first time Serbia has faced allegations of genocide at the world court. In a landmark 2007 judgment, the court cleared Belgrade of committing genocide in the 1995 massacre of some 8,000 Muslim men in the Bosnian enclave of Srebrenica.

Police forced to break up huge crowd of furious jobseekers after Stockholm employment agency invites 61,000 people to recruitment meeting by mistake

ստոկհոլմ

Police were forced to break up a baying mob of jobseekers outside an employment office in Sweden after it accidentally invited 61,000 people to a recruitment meeting.

The e-mail call for the meeting should have gone out to about 1,000 jobseekers but instead went to all unemployed people registered in Stockholm, police said.

Hundreds of people expecting to attend crowded into the alley where the labour office is located and spilled into the adjacent street, a main thoroughfare running through downtown Stockholm.

Emotions were running high and office staff sounded the alarm, bringing police to the scene.

Clas Olsson, acting director of the employment office, told the Aftonbladet newspaper he did not know if the cause was a human or technical error.

Sweden’s total unemployment stood at 8.6 per cent in January.

Rome Mayor: Cash-Short City Risks Shut Down Soon

հռոմ

Rome’s mayor says the Italian capital next week risks a shutdown of mass transit, trash collection and other city services unless Parliament quickly frees up funds.

Mayor Ignazio Marino stressed on Thursday he’s not seeking a bailout. The 320 million euros ($440 million) blocked in Parliament are Roman taxpayer money that the national government was supposed to give back to the city by Feb. 28.

But Parliament is suffering gridlock as opposition lawmakers use stalling tactics to protest that Italy last week got another premier who wasn’t elected.

Romans are caught in the middle. Marino says if the funds don’t arrive, city buses won’t have fuel, trash collection will halt, day-care and other public services will close.

Benedict Denies He Was Pressured to Resign

Retired Pope Benedict XVI has denied speculation that he was pressured to leave office, saying his decision was freely made and his alone.

Benedict wrote to the Vatican correspondent for La Stampa newspaper, Andrea Tornielli, amid a new round of speculation about his reasons ahead of Friday’s first anniversary of the first resignation by a pope in 600 years.

Benedict, 86, also defended his decision to continue wearing the white cassock of the papacy, saying that there were no other clothes available.

Media are again speculating about what drove Benedict from office. Italian journalist Antonio Socci suggested last week in the conservative daily Libero that the resignation may have been invalid, claiming Benedict was pressured by a group of cardinals opposed to him.

Katy Perry’s ‘Dark Horse’ Video Deemed Blasphemous by Muslim Community

The music video for Katy Perry‘s “Dark Horse” has drawn ire from the Muslim community. Shazad Iqbal from Bradford, England, has launched an online petition asking YouTube to remove the clip, which was debuted last week.

The video doesn’t look harmful at all as it mostly features Perry as a queen who uses her power to turn all her suitors into dust after failing to please her with their gifts. However, Iqbal notices that there’s a man wearing a necklace that reads “Allah” who ends up being killed as well.

In the complaint, Mr Iqbal said: ‘The video is considered as highly controversial to its viewers as a result of its portrayal of blasphemy.

The petition has so far garnered 40,000 signatures.

Holmes under the hammer: Victorian church where Arthur Conan Doyle tried to contact the dead goes on the market for £500,000

A Victorian church where Sherlock Homes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tried to contact the dead has gone up for sale.

The Cedars Spiritualist Church in Ipswich, Suffolk – once a hotbed of British spiritualism – is on the market for between £500,000 and £700,000.

In the 1920s it hosted packed meetings where psychics would try to contact the spirits of people who had passed on.

One regular visitor was writer Doyle who was one of the most famous spiritualists of his day, finding solace in the practice after losing his wife Louise in 1906 and his son Kingsley just before the end of the First World War.

Records show that Ipswich Psychic Society – as the church was once known – hosted popular garden parties and talks that attracted as many as 1,000 people.

Kandi Munson, The Cedars’ president, said the imposing Victorian property was originally bought for £800.
She added: ‘We had our own mediums, Joan Brown and Dorothy Abraham, who lived here in the flats above the church for many years.

‘They talked about people arriving in horse and carriages from London, visits from and to Native Indians in Canada and, of course, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who came to society meetings on a number of occasions.

‘We’ve got all his books on spiritualism – all first editions which he gave us. They are locked away but they won’t be sold as part of the house.

‘They are too precious and will be coming with us to our new home.’

Church leaders have taken the decision to sell up as they want a property more suited to what the church now offers, including activities such as yoga and meditation, as well as regular services.

The Cedars will be going under the hammer at Goldings Auctions at Wherstead Park next month.

Spain: Migrants Make Violent Border Crossing Bid

Hundreds of sub-Saharan migrants armed with sticks and stones stormed the six-meter (20-foot) high double barbed wire border fence on Monday in a bid to enter Spain’s northwest African enclave of Melilla from Morocco, with about 100 of them making it across, Spanish and Moroccan officials said.

The spokeswoman for the Interior Ministry’s office in Melilla said Moroccan guards trying to halt the migrants were attacked during the melee and had to take shelter.

Spain said 500 migrants were involved in the assault while Morocco put the figure at 300.

Ten-year-old boy who claimed he was a dwarf after police saw him driving his parents’ car is caught AGAIN after taking another car

նորվեգիաThe Norwegian boy who told police he was a dwarf who had forgotten his licence when he was caught taking his parent’s car for a joyride last week, has done it again.

This time, the boy, aged ten, liberated his aunt of her car and drove from Fagernes to Tonsåsen, a trip of about 20-25miles, before he was stopped, his parents said today.

As soon as the parents realised their son was gone – along with his aunt’s Opel – they called police.

After the last time, the young boy had promised his parents that it would never happen again, but his mother said she assumes the temptation was too great.

‘He is a boy who likes adventure and excitement, that’s all there is to it,’ she added.

The boy caused a stir last week when he put his 18-month old sister in the family car while his parents were still sleeping.

Use your horn! Herdsmen spray reindeers’ antlers with fluorescent paint to prevent car crashes

finland-reindeer1Finnish reindeer herders have found a new way of keeping their livestock from being hit by cars – they cover their horns in fluorescent dye.

The herders are trying out different types of reflective paints in the hope of finding a shade which can resist the harsh climate.

It is the the latest attempt to stop thousands of road deaths involving reindeer in Lapland, in northern Finland.

Anne Ollila of the Finnish Reindeer Herder’s Association says the antlers of 20 reindeer have been painted with various fluorescent dyes to see how the animals react and whether the paints are resistant to the harsh Arctic climate.

If successful, animals with glittering antlers will be free to roam Lapland — a vast, deserted area in northern Finland where herders tend to some 200,000 reindeer.

Ollila says reflectors and reflective tape have proven unsuccessful as reindeer have torn them off — and road signs warning drivers of roaming reindeer often are stolen by tourists as souvenirs.

Berlin’s Pergamon Altar Faces 5-Year Closure

Berlin’s museums authority says one of the city’s best-known cultural treasures, the 2nd century B.C. Pergamon Altar, will be shut to visitors for up to five years from September for restoration work on the building that houses it.

The altar, decorated with a marble frieze, was built between 197 and 156 B.C. in the present-day Turkish town of Bergama. It’s the centerpiece of Berlin’s Pergamon Museum.

The authority that runs Berlin’s public museums said Tuesday the central hall that contains the altar will close Sept. 29, and likely won’t reopen until 2019, though it plans to set up a temporary exhibition nearby with original material from the altar.
