Swedish Christmas Goat Engulfed in Flames – Again

Շվեդիա, ամանորյա ծղոտե այծ

Vandals in Sweden have burned down for the 27th time a giant straw goat meant to symbolize Christmas spirit.

The 13-meter (43-foot) high and 3.6-ton heavy straw goat was engulfed in flames early Saturday after unidentified assailants attacked it in the Swedish town of Gavle, 150 kilometers (90 miles) north of Stockholm.

Շվեդիա, ամանորյա ծղոտե այծ

The straw goat is a centuries-old Scandinavian yule symbol that preceded Santa Claus as the bringer of gifts.

Since 1966, when the tradition of erecting the giant straw goat in the town square was introduced, Vandals have burnt it down 27 times.

Pope sends out 2,000 Christmas packages to Rome immigrants containing phone cards and a free day’s Metro travel

Պապ, ներգաղթյալներ,ամանորյա նվերներ

Pope Francis has given Christmas packages to 2,000 immigrants at a shelter near the Vatican.

The package included a Christmas card signed by the Pope, postage stamps, a pre-paid international calling card, and a free day travel card for the Rome metro.

She added that Benedict XVI had also reached out to those in need through various initiatives, in ways that were never publicized by the Holy See’s Press Office, reported the Catholic News Agency.

Meanwhile Pope Francis has made an amateur video praising the world’s ‘cartoneros’ – the poor people who pick through garbage to find recyclable and reusable goods.

He says their work is dignified and good for the environment.

Spain to Present New Restrictive Abortion Law

Մարիանո Ռախոյ

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says his government is about to approve an abortion law that rolls back current legislation permitting the procedure without restrictions until the 14th week. The proposal limits pregnancy terminations to exceptional circumstances, such as when the mother or fetus is in danger.

Rajoy said in Brussels on Friday the reform was an electoral promise and that it would essentially restore abortion limits that were in place in 1985.

The bill being considered at a Cabinet meeting was expected to once again allow abortion only in the case of rape or when there is a health risk. Certain fetal deformities may also be accepted as justification.

The bill has been opposed by most opposition parties and women’s groups across the country.

Father doused in petrol sets himself alight at St Peter’s Square in Vatican City while clutching piece of paper with his daughter’s phone number

Vatican City1

A man doused his body with gasoline and set himself on fire in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City this morning, officials said.

The motive behind the self-immolation is not yet known, except that the unnamed man carried a piece of paper with the phone number of his daughter.

The 51-year-old man was ablaze in the square when a passing Jesuit priest ran to his aid to smother the flames with a jacket.

The priest was later joined by two police officers who used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze.

The unnamed man was treated at a nearby hospital and transferred to a larger one, with serious burns to the upper part of his body.

The attack took place the day after Pope Francis held his final public audience of the year in St Peter’s Square.

Spain Fines Google $1.2 Million Over Privacy Laws

Google-Corp

Spain’s data protection agency says it has fined search engine giant Google 900,000 euros ($1.2 million) for three serious breaches of the country’s laws.

The agency says in a statement that it was imposing a fine of 300,000 euros for each breach, and requesting that Google comply with the law without delay.

Thursday’s statement says Google collects and processes personal information illegally, that it combines personal information for purposes that are “not determined clearly” and that personal data is stored and maintained “for indeterminate periods of time.”

Data watchdogs in France, Britain, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain have said Google needs to provide additional guarantees to comply with national privacy protection rules in each of those countries.

Marisa Toro, Google’s spokesperson in Spain, said the company was studying the statement.

How David Cameron’s oil painting look-a-like put me at the centre of a Twitter viral

o_864257

I absentmindedly posted a picture of an oil painting that looked the Prime Minister – the next thing I know it’s spread around the world, writes student Sophie Gadd

Yesterday I was awoken by a frantic phone call from my mother telling me I was on page three of The Daily Mail.

That may rank as one of the most terrifying ways to wake up, after fire alarms and falling out of bed.

My appearance on page three was not the result of me taking my clothes off, but the culmination of 24 hours of viral social media, and it happened like this.

While visiting an admittedly quite boring Berlin museum with a friend, I spotted a painting of a woman who looked remarkably like David Cameron, right down to the receding hairline, jowls and cherubic cheeks.

I absentmindedly posted it on Twitter expecting a few replies

But nothing could prepare me for how quickly the picture spread.

On Twitter it began with hundreds of people retweeting it, and messaging me to say that it was Catherine the Great.

It’s this point during a viral Twitter storm that notifications have to be disabled, for fear that your phone may explode.

This phase was followed by lots of horse jokes – there are many myths about Catherine and strange “incidents” with horses.

The wave of sceptical truthers came barraging in next, claiming everything from Photoshop, to face-swap, to the fact that it was in fact a painting of David Cameron.

I was slightly taken aback by the accusation I might spend my holidays editing photographs of the Prime Minister. Well, everyone needs a hobby.

I hadn’t submitted it to the press, yet in less than a day the picture found its way onto websites, the papers, radio, and TV.

It is an incredibly surreal experience for an average politics student to find their name appearing in the news, having not really done much at all.

This must be one of the laziest ways anyone has got press coverage in 2013. Typical student.

In the last few weeks there have been a few pictures circulating on the internet of teachers holding up signs saying they wanted to teach their pupils how quickly an image can spread online .

I didn’t take this seriously myself until it took less than 24 hours for my picture to get from Twitter to a national newspaper.

It’s slightly nerve wracking reading an op-ed piece on a newspaper website discussing what could’ve been a passing comment in the pub.

It is also strange to think that Cameron himself has probably been made aware of the picture, since it could make up quite a jibe in PMQs. This has certainly made me more cautious about tweeting nonsense.

Just as I thought the storm had died down, The Spectator discovered David Cameron is in fact actually distantly related to Catherine the Great.

So what I thought was a funny observation actually turned out to reveal a new blue-blooded relative for our man of the people . Maybe I should go to museums more often!

Syrian Convicted of Spying in Germany

Գերմանիա,սիրիացի, լրտես

A Berlin court says it has convicted a 37-year-old German-Syrian dual national of spying on exiled dissidents in Germany for Syria’s intelligence services and given him a nine-month suspended sentence.

The Berlin state court said Wednesday that Samer C., whose last name was not given in accordance with German privacy laws, provided Syrian intelligence with photographs of dissidents and other information. The court says he also stole two mobile telephones from a dissident at a 2011 rally and passed along the data on them.

He was alleged to have worked for Syrian intelligence from March 2011 to February 2012, through contacts in the military attache’s office at the Syrian Embassy in Berlin.

The verdict can be appealed.

Pope celebrates his 77th birthday by going for breakfast with four homeless people often seen near the Vatican

Պապ Ֆրանցիսկ

Since becoming leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics, his trademark humble style has won him plaudits.

And even on his birthday Pope Francis has refused to make a splash – choosing instead to celebrate the day with four homeless people.

The pontiff kicked off his 77th birthday, with mass at the humble priests’ guesthouse where he has made his home, followed by breakfast with four homeless people often seen near the Vatican.

Francis has cultivated an image of a poor church since his inauguration in April. He has shunned the traditional robes, jewellery and even the luxurious papal apartment for a more spartan lifestyle.

But the Argentinian Pope is set to receive at least one priceless gift. His favourite football team Buenos Aires side San Lorenzo de Almagro are set to offer him the league title trophy they won earlier this week.

The club’s most famous fan is scheduled to receive a six-person delegation of players and managers from the club who boarded a private jet to Rome to visit him, after winning a title for the first time in six years.

The Vatican TV Centre released a short film entitled ‘Happy Birthday Papa Francesco’, to mark his first birthday in office.

The 1minute 45 second video shows the most significant images of the first nine months of his pontificate from the white smoke emerging from the Sistine Chapel to his historic mass on Copacabana beach in Rio di Janeiro.

German officials say Chancellor Angela Merkel was involved in a traffic accident on a highway near Berlin but there were no injuries and only slight damage.

Police spokesman Ingo Heese said the mirrors of a Berlin man’s car and the chancellor’s vehicle hit each other on Sunday afternoon. It wasn’t clear what led to the accident.

Merkel spokesman Steffen Seibert said Monday that “the chancellor’s driver didn’t cause this slight accident.”

Merkel, who is to be sworn in for a third term on Tuesday, appeared unruffled by the experience when she appeared at an event in Berlin hours after the accident.

Some of them are nice… but some of them are naughty: Thousands of people dressed as Father Christmas run amok across the world

Santa-Con2

Police arrested three people in central London after thousands of revellers dressed as Father Christmas ran amok.

The world-wide internet flash-mob gathering SantaCon, in which strangers agree to meet dressed as Father Christmas before hitting the streets for some festive fun, has been criticised in the past for some revellers getting a little carried away and heavy drinking.

Meanwhile, some revellers in New York also got a little carried away –  with six Santas and one  elf – brawling on the streets.

In footage captured by a resident of a nearby apartment, the Santas slide across the snowy, slushy streets, throwing punches at one another.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) stationed 80 ‘helper elves’ along the course of the event.

A spokesman said there were no arrests associated with this year’s SantaCon.

Elsewhere the festive party also invaded the streets of San Francisco – where the event originally started in the early ninties.

Meanwhile, hundreds of party goers took to the street of Vancouver, Canada, on Saturday.

SantaCon was originally called Santarchy and first took place in San Francisco in 1994.

It now spans events in more than 300 cities and 44 countries worldwide.

Santas taking part are encouraged to sing, hand out presents even have strangers sit on their lap.

Meanwhile in Bridgend… Over 1,300 turn out to beat Elf record.

A new record has been set for the largest gathering of elves in Bridgend, South Wales.

They succeeded in breaking the previous record of 1,200 elves set this time last year with a total of 1,312 participants.

Bridgend took the record from New York two years ago and has remained champion ever since.

Turkey, EU Sign Deal for Talks on Visa-Free Travel

Turkey and the European Union on Monday signed agreements starting talks for a possible deal that would lift visa restrictions for Turkish citizens traveling to Europe and which Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called a ‘milestone’ in relations between his country and the 28-member bloc.

Under the agreements signed in the Turkish capital Ankara, Turkey would in turn, agree to take back immigrants who illegally enter the EU from Turkish territory.

The deals on visa-free travel and the re-admission of immigrants come weeks after the EU resumed membership negotiations with Turkey that began in 2005 but have been stalled for more than three years, mainly due to Turkey’s dispute with EU-member Cyprus and skepticism in some European nations on admitting a populous, largely Muslim country into the group.

Turks have long complained about onerous visa demands from European nations that were designed to restrict Turkish citizens from flooding labor markets.

Erdogan said Turkey was no longer an exporter of labor and that the country’s dynamic economy over the past 10 years meant that the country had now become a destination for jobseekers.

The agreements foresee a deal on the lifting of visa restrictions within 3 ½ years, but Erdogan said he hoped it can be done much sooner.

Ferry Runs Aground in Baltic Sea, No Injuries

Amorella_ferry-finnish

A Finnish ferry operator says one of its Sweden-bound vessels is stuck on rocks in the Baltic Sea but none of the nearly 2,000 passengers were injured or in any danger.

Viking Line says the M/S Amorella hit the rocks after a power failure on the ship at midday Saturday as it was on its way from the Finnish port of Turku to Stockholm with 1,945 passengers.

In a statement, the operator said a minor leak has been found in a ballast tank but stressed the ship was not taking in water.

The Aland Islands, a group of semi-autonomous Finnish islands, are midway between the two port cities and the ferry was making a scheduled stop there.

Ukraine President Proposes Protester Amnesty

Ուկրաինա, ցուցարարներ

Ukraine’s president proposed an amnesty Friday for all protesters facing criminal charges in the country’s wave of massive anti-government demonstrations.

President Viktor Yanukovych made the offer at a round-table meeting that included three leaders of the opposition that has orchestrated more than three weeks of anti-government protests, flooding the streets of Kiev with hundreds of thousands of people.

There was no immediate reaction from the opposition figures, who earlier had said they were going to the meeting only to state their demands, including that the government resign and early parliamentary and presidential elections be held.

In another possible sign of progress, the deputy prime minister said that Ukraine wants to soon sign the agreement to deepen economic and political ties with the EU.

Yet this economically troubled nation of 46 million is deeply divided over the EU deal. Many people in eastern Ukraine, the country’s rural heartland, are against the protesters in Kiev and want the country to have closer economic ties with Russia.

Dozens of G20 diplomats had computers hacked after clicking on an attachment labelled ‘To see naked pictures of Carla Bruni click here’

Կառլա Բրունի

Nude pictures of former French first lady Carla Bruni were used to break in to the computer systems of dozens of diplomats, it emerged today.

The shocking security breach was first discovered at the G20 summit in Paris in February 2011 and may be ongoing.

‘To see naked pictures of Carla Bruni click here’ said a message sent to those attending, who included finance ministers and central bank representatives.

This prompted many to open an attachment which turned out to be a ‘Trojan Horse’ with an embedded virus, although all recipients could see were the X-rated photographs.

‘Almost everybody who received the email took the bait,’ said a government source in Paris, saying that this included representatives from the Czech Republic, Portugal, Bulgaria, Hungary and Latvia.

The so-called phishing attacks are thought to have originated in China and were aimed at extracting information.

The attacks are still being investigated, and nobody is yet sure what information was extracted.

America is thought to have been the main target of the scam.

Spanish government rejects Catalonia independence vote

Իսպանիա,Կատալոնիա,անկախության հանրաքվե

The president of Spain’s regional government of Catalonia said Thursday he wants to hold an independence referendum on Nov. 9, 2014, but the Spanish government immediately said no.

Artur Mas announced in the Catalan capital Barcelona that the referendum would ask the region’s voters if they want Catalonia to be a state and, if so, should it be independent.

Mas did not clarify the distinction between a state and an independent state. However, the questions appeared to open a door for those nationalists who want Catalonia to have the structure of a state but remain a part of Spain, possibly along the lines of Puerto Rico and the United States.

Իսպանիա,Կատալոնիա,անկախության հանրաքվե

Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardon responded to Mas’ announcement, saying a referendum would be illegal and would not be allowed.

Spain’s Constitution says only the central government in Madrid can call a referendum, and Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy recently rejected a request by Mas to allow one. The government has not said what it might do to prevent a ballot.

Polls indicate that Catalans are roughly evenly split on independence. The European Union and NATO have warned Catalonia it would be excluded if it seceded.

French café begins fining customers for rudeness… with a coffee costing seven euros if you do not say ‘please’ or wish the barista a nice day

սուրճ

It’s said that good manners don’t cost you anything and, for the customers of one café, they could even help save the pennies.

A café in the south of France has called out its less well-mannered customers by hiking the price of a coffee if they don’t say please.

The Petite Syrah café in Nice, on the French Riviera, is charging customers €7 for ‘a coffee’, but a more affordable €4.25 for a ‘a coffee please’.

But those customers who request their caffeinated beverage with a cheery ‘good day, a coffee please’ get the best deal of all. Their coffees will set them back just €1.40.

The French are well known for their love of pleasantries.

So when standards drop it can be a particularly unpleasant shock, which is why the Petite Syrah has decided to enforce polite deportment by hitting rude customers in their pockets.

Fabrice Pepino, manager of the Petite Syrah, says the sign has been a success. He’s never been actually had to enforce the novel pricing scheme, he said, but has nevertheless noticed a marked difference in the behaviour of his customers.

Bavaria to Keep Blocking ‘Mein Kampf’ Publication

Bavaria’s state government says it will try to keep Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” out of publication in Germany after the copyright expires in 2015 — reversing a decision to support new editions with critical commentary.

“Mein Kampf” isn’t actually banned in Germany, but Bavaria has used its ownership of the copyright to block publication. The copyright expires 70 years after the author’s death.

The Bavarian governor’s chief of staff, Christine Haderthauer, said late Tuesday Hitler’s anti-Semitic memoir amounts to incitement and the government will file a criminal complaint if anyone tries to publish it in the future, news agency dpa reported.

Governor Horst Seehofer pointed to Bavaria’s participation in a drive to have modern Germany’s main far-right party banned and said that doesn’t fit with supporting publication of “Mein Kampf.”

Report: German president to boycott Olympics in Russia over human rights

Յոախիմ Գաուկ

German President Joachim Gauck will boycott the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, according to a report Sunday.

The announcement would make Gauck, a former pastor, the first major political figure to boycott the Games, which will be held at the Black Sea resort in February.

According to a report in the German publication Der Spiegel, Gauck made the decision in protest against human rights violations and the harassment of Russian opposition political figures. The magazine said the Russian government was informed of his decision last week.

The German presidential office could not be reached for comment Sunday. Russia’s Presidential Press Service said there was no immediate official reaction to the report.

Germany’s presidency is largely ceremonial; Chancellor Angela Merkel oversees the government.

Some athletes have spoken out against Russia’s new “propaganda” law that bans even discussion of homosexuality anywhere that children might hear it.

Lenin statue toppled in Ukraine protest

ukraine

Protesters knocked down a statue of Vladimir Lenin on Sunday as outrage mounted over the Ukrainian government’s push for closer ties with Russia.

A crowd of cheering protesters chanted “Good job” after the statue fell in Kiev’s Bessarabska Square.

Some pounded the monument with hammers, leaving pieces of the statue scattered on the ground. Only parts of the Soviet hero’s legs remained at the base.

Police said they were investigating but did not know know who had toppled the monument. Ukraine’s government news agency said a lawmaker with the nationalist Svoboda party claimed responsibility for the incident.

“This is the end of Soviet occupation,” the party’s Twitter account said. “End of (the) regime of shame and humiliation.”

The Communist Party decried the attack on the statue Sunday.

The toppling of the statue on Sunday came as 100,000 protesters took to the streets of Kiev, according to police estimates, piling more pressure on Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych after he turned away from integration with Europe.
