Six Americans Killed in Kabul Car Bomb Attack

ap_Afghanistan_kabul_suicide_bomber_debris_thg_130515_wgSix Americans — two soldiers and four civilian contractors — are among at least 14 people killed in a massive car bomb blast in Kabul this morning, according to U.S. and Afghan officials.

More than 30 Afghan civilians, including a number of children, were wounded.

The attack happened just after 8 a.m. The bomber drove a car filled with explosives directly into a military convoy as it drove through the city. The explosion was so powerful it reduced a series of vehicles to piles of twisted, mangled metal, and set nearby buildings on fire. The scene was quickly secured by NATO troops, as fires smoldered on the freshly blackened street. Some of the bodies were so badly burned they were difficult to identify.

The militant group Hezb-Islami, run by notorious Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, quickly claimed responsibility, saying they targeted a convoy carrying American military advisers. A statement by the group’s spokesperson says it has formed a special cell to carry out attacks on U.S. targets

Plane crashes as pilot tries to land in Nepal injuring all 21 passengers and leaving four in a critical condition A plane crashed while trying to land at a mountain airstrip in northern

p2Nepal early today, injuring all 21 people on board. Four of the injured are in critical condition, police officer Bhim Bahadur Chand said. No one was killed in the crash. Nine passengers are Japanese tourists, and the three crew members and the other passengers are all Nepali. The plane belonging to state-owned Nepal Airlines was trying to land at Jomsom airport, some 125 miles northwest of Katmandu, when it crashed on the banks of Kaligandaki river. The injured were rushed to the local hospital, and those with serious injuries are being airlifted to nearby Pokhara town for treatment. The area is popular with foreign trekkers visiting the Mount Annapurna area and Hindu pilgrims visiting the revered Muktinath temple. Fifteen people were killed last May when a plane crashed while attempting to land at the same airport. The lure of the Himalayas attracts more than 100,000 trekkers, including 40,000 Brits, each year to Nepal. Visitor numbers to Everest have doubled since the end of the civil war there in 2006 – but plane crashes have become worryingly frequent in the Asian country. Pilots say they are under too much pressure from their bosses during busy periods and that the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) isn’t capable of addressing the problems undermining safety. Some experts believe that one or more of Nepal’s domestic airlines will soon be placed on the EU’s blacklist.

Chinese police destroy £21million of counterfeit designer goods… just another £20BILLION to go!

Police destroy 200m Yuan worth of counterfeit goods, Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China - 14 May 2013Chinese police destroyed £21 million of counterfeit designer goods today in a lavish publicity stunt aimed at showing the world they are cracking down on the illegal trade.

Fake wine, cigarettes, handbags and cosmetics were all thrown on a fire in Guiyang, southwest China’s Guizhou Province.

But authorities have a long way to go – a recent UN report revealed a staggering 75 per cent of all fake goods seized worldwide from 2008 to 2010 were primarily from China.

The UN report stated that counterfeit goods accounted for one third of the organised crime in East Asia and the Pacific is worth approximately $90bn (£58bn).

Most counterfeits fall into four categories: CDs and DVDs; accessories, watches and footwear; tobacco products; and textiles.

Last year an entire city in China literally shut up shop when nearly all of its stores closed after it was falsely reported that officials were planning a clampdown on the sale of counterfeit products.

Officials in Shenyang city were forced to beg store owners to reopen after 95 per cent of shops remain closed.

In November police arrested 73 people suspected of manufacturing and selling almost 1 million fake luxury bags in China.

The Ministry of Public Security said police seized more than 20,000 fake Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Coach bags and closed 37 sites where the forgery ring made or sold the bags.

Police said the ring sold more than 960,000 bags and exported many to the United States and Middle East.

Walmart to inspect all Bangladesh factories

2Walmart-ը ստուգումներ կանցկացնի Բանգլադեշի ֆաբրիկաներումGiant retailer Walmart announced Tuesday that it would conduct in-depth safety inspections of all 279 of its Bangladesh suppliers, in the wake of the building collapse that killed more than 1,100 people.
The US retailer said it would release publicly the names and inspection information on each of the factories, and meanwhile also issued a list of more than 200 factories that are blacklisted for failing to meet its standards for suppliers.
The company did not say however if it would join a protocol agreed by a number of other major buyers of clothes made in Bangladesh, the “Accord on Fire and Building Safety” endorsed by Benetton, Mango, Marks & Spencer, Inditex and H&M.
The action comes in the wake of the April 24 collapse of a nine-story building outside Dhaka housing multiple garment factories, including some which reportedly supplied Walmart, killing 1,127 in the worst disaster ever in the global textile industry.

UN says natural disasters cost $2.5 tn since 2000

1Բնական աղետների արժեքը կազմել է 2.5 տրիլիոն դոլարThe cost of natural disasters has hit $2.5 trillion so far this century, far higher than previously estimated, a UN report said Wednesday, urging companies to face up to the risks.
The study by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) said the figure, representing only direct losses, was more accurate than traditional tallies.
Most tallies “just represent the picture from internationally-reported disasters, the big disasters which get into the headlines,” said Andrew Maskrey, author of the UNISDR’s latest Global Assessment Report.
“If you add in all the nationally-reported disasters, which don’t get into the international media and the international databases, our impression is that losses are about 50 percent higher than is currently being reported, and losses are going up rapidly,” he said.
Businesses have been outsourcing to disaster-prone locations without taking adequate catastrophe-proofing precautions, a move which could be potentially costly in case of a disaster, he noted.

“I’ve never postponed a show in my life. It was very hard for me,” the 31-year-old singer said in a handwritten note to her “dearest fans in Antwerp”, published on her facebook page.
“Thank you for your concern. I’m feeling much better now and I am ready to give you a great show,” she wrote, after apologising for disappointing her fans.
On the advice of her doctors, who found her “exhausted and dehydrated”, Beyonce on Tuesday cancelled her concert, which was scheduled to take place in front of 15,000 spectators.
The cancellation came amid widespread media speculation that Beyonce may be pregnant with her second child.

Bahrain court jails 6 tweeters for a year

3Բահրեյնի դատարանը Twitter-ի վեց օգտատերերին դատապարտում էA Bahraini court on Wednesday sentenced six tweeters charged with insulting King Hamad to one year in prison, the public prosecutor’s office announced.
The six were charged by the lower criminal court with “misusing the right of free expression,” it said in a statement.
They were accused of writing remarks “undermining the values and traditions of Bahrain’s society towards the king on Twitter,” according to the statement.
Activists in Bahrain, the scene of a Shiite-led uprising that began two years ago against the ruling Sunni monarchy, use Twitter as a platform to report what they describe as regime “violations” against them.
Prominent activist Nabil Rajab, who heads the Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, has been in custody since June 6 on charges of insulting members of the Sunni community via Twitter.

Mexican volcano spewing ash and lava threatens town as officials prepare to evacuate thousands

Thousands of people living in the shadow of this looming Mexican volcano have been placed on high alert following a dramatic increase in seismic activity from the Popocatepetl crater.

The 17,886ft active volcano near Mexico City, known as Popo, rumbled and shook during the night on Saturday, and has been spewing ash, lava and steam in recent days.

Officials have closed off an exclusion zone around the cone of the volcano and are poised to evacuate towns in its foothills as experts warned of plumes of steam reaching more than half a mile into the sky above the crater.

Authorities have alerted town in two central states as well as the capital, after Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Center elevated its alert level to Yellow Phase 3 – the fifth rung on a seven-stage warning scale.
Should the alert level rise thousands of people could be evacuated from the most vulnerable villages in the shadow of the peak. Shelters have been set up in case authorities are forced to evacuate residents.

Popocatepetl is an Aztec word meaning ‘Smoking Mountain’. Popo lay dormant for decades until it began putting out small eruptions of ash almost daily in 1994. These eruptions started strengthening two weeks ago and have increased even more this weekend.

The millions of people who have settled in and around the Mexican capital mean experts regard Popocatepetl as one of the most potentially destructive volcanoes in the world.

Justin Bieber and Bon Jovi Concerts Scene of Stadium Heist

130514102344-bieber-johannesburg-0512-story-topThieves targeted the city’s famed FNB Stadium following concerts this weekend by Justin Bieber and Bon Jovi in a heist that included them chiseling through the wall of a safe room and lowering themselves into the room with ropes. And using a system of ropes and ladders to get back out.

Authorities are not disclosing exactly how much cash was stolen, but they believe most of the money had been collected from numerous bars, food stands and merchandise outlets.

No one even noticed the cash was gone until early Monday morning.

“It wasn’t an impromptu incident,” Jacques Grobbelarr, a member of the stadium’s management team, told Eyewitness News South Africa. “There was definite planning. Looking at the scene and the place they broke into, it looks as if they were planning this for quite some time, probably a couple of days.”

Private investigators have been brought in to help police, and several employees have been given polygraph tests, as authorities believe only those with an intimate knowledge of the stadium’s layout and security plans could have pulled off a heist of this caliber. Officials are also combing through footage from 10 security cameras around the stadium, which remains on lockdown.

The stunning robbery came just hours after Bieber wrapped up a Sunday concert for more than 60,000 fans. After learning of the heist, Bieber denied any involvement, telling TMZ, “It’ wasn’t me.”

India unveils vacccine for deadly diarrhoea virus

4Ռոտավիրուսի դեմ ստեղծվել է նոր պատվաստանյութScientists unveiled Tuesday an affordable vaccine against a deadly diarrhoea-causing virus that kills some 100,000 children in India every year.
Rotavirus, which causes dehydration and severe diarrhoea, is globally responsible for some 453,000 deaths annually and is particularly threatening in Africa and Asia, where access to urgent healthcare is often out of reach.
K. Vijaraghavan, secretary of India’s Department of Biotechnology which steered the hunt for an affordable rotavirus vaccine, said it was a product of international cooperation, although it has yet to be approved by New Delhi.
The vaccine named Rotavac will be manufactured by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech pharmaceutical firm which has said it has the capacity to mass produce 60 million doses after clearance is given. Each vaccination consists of three doses.
Rotavirus is blamed for causing up to 884,000 hospitalisations in India a year, at a cost to the country of 3.4 billion rupees ($72 million), scientists say.

That’s one way to down a pint… Student filmed drinking a beer through her EAR

be3There have been numerous drinking games invented over the years – but drinking a pint of beer through the ear has got to be one of the most challenging.

But a young female drinker has apparently achieved the astonishing feat in this video posted on the Czech Beer Festival’s Facebook page.

The woman, wearing a green cardigan with matching scarf, can be seen placing a bendy straw into her left ear as her friends gather around her.

But deciding she may have better luck with her right ear, she removes her earring before placing the straw in that ear instead.
The end of the straw is placed in a pint of beer and the drinker appears to suck the booze through her ear in this bizarre video which lasts just one minute and 53 seconds.

And judging from her facial expressions, it apparently isn’t a very pleasant experience.

The pint of beer gradually empties until it is finally all gone and the young female is greeted with a round of applause.

It is thought the video is a fake, especially as the beer can’t be seen in certain camera shots, but it is still unclear how the ruse of the emptying beer glass was created.

Musicians really ARE sexier: Scientists find that carrying a guitar increases your chance of getting a date by a third

m1 (1)Carrying a guitar can increase the chances of you getting a date by a third, according to a study by researchers from the University of South Brittany.

The study found that women were 31% more likely to give their number to a man carrying a guitar – double the amount of people who would give their number to the same man when he was empty-handed.

The study was led by Professor Nicolas Gueguen, a researcher in behavioural sciences at the University.

Gueguen hired a 20-year-old man to approach 300 women aged between 18 and 22 in a shopping centre in Brittany.

The man told each girl that they were ‘really pretty’ and asked for her phone number so they could arrange a date.

For the first 100 women he was holding a sports bag.

For the next 100 women he approached them holding a guitar case.

And for the final 100 women, the man asked them for their number without anything in his hands.

When the actor was carrying the guitar case, 31% of the women gave them his number.

When he was carrying nothing, 14% of the women gave them his number.

The biggest turn off for the women was when he was carrying the sports bag, which had a success rate of only 9%.

Bangladesh riot death toll rises to 37 after Islamic hardilners demanding blasphemy law battled police

ba137 people were killed and hundreds more injured in Bangladesh today in fierce street fighting between police and Islamic hardliners demanding the death penalty for blasphemy.

Rioters chanting ‘God is greatest!’ torched shops and vehicles, blocked roads and fought bloody battles with police in the capital of Dhaka and its suburbs.

At least 70,000 activists ran amok in the capitals financial district overnight, forcing hundreds of workers to sleep in their offices as gunfire rattled through the night.

Dozens of demonstrators were arrested, while the leader of the protests was put on a plane to the country’s second city Chittagong and the deputy chief was detained in the capital.

Activists from the fundamentalist Hefajat-e-Islam group had marched along at least six roads, blocking transport between Dhaka and other cities.

Police have said about 200,000 people marched to central Dhaka, where tensions erupted as protesters – armed with rocks – clashed with security officials, who beat them back with batons.

It is believed rioting broke out after police tried to intercept protesters, many of whom had travelled from remote villages and had gathered in front of the country’s largest mosque.

The protests had been instigated by Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, the leader of Hefajat-e-Islam who is said to be around 90 years old.

Hefajat-e-Islam is a newly created radical Islamist group that wants greater segregation of men and women, and a stricter Islamic education. It also want the restoration of pledges to Allah in the constitution.

The government in Bangladesh has rejected the groups’ demands, saying the Muslim-majority nation is governed by secular liberal laws.

Leaders have threatened to launch a campaign to oust the government unless their demands are met.

Kindergarten head held over China poison deaths

Chinese police have arrested the head of a kindergarten and her associate over the deaths of two children from a rival school who ate yoghurt injected with rat poison, state media said.

The five- and six-year-old girls from northern Hebei province died after eating the yoghurt which they had found in a bag on the side of the road while walking to school with their grandmother.

2Չինաստանի մանկապարտեզի տնօրենը ձերբակալվել է եր եխաներին թունավորեThe rival kindergarten director Shi Haixia and her associate Yang Wenming “admitted that they injected the poison into the yoghurt and left it on the street”, the China Daily said.

“Their intention was to damage the reputation of the rival kindergarten.”

The poison contained a strong rat poison called tetramine, the China Daily said, citing a local security official.

The pair were arrested on Wednesday, the same day the younger girl died after a week in hospital. The six-year-old died within hours of drinking the yoghurt on April 24.

Hong Kong struggles to combat waste crisis

աղբAn army of road sweepers and refuse collectors keep the streets clean in the heart of Hong Kong — but on the outskirts, growing mountains of waste are testament to what campaigners say is an environmental crisis.

While the city may look well-kept, its three huge outdoor landfill sites are piled high with rubbish and are set to reach capacity by 2020, according to the government’s Environmental Protection Department (EPD).

Some predictions say the first will be full in a year or two.

“We need to have a clear roadmap for waste reduction, otherwise our rubbish will be on the streets in seven years’ time,” environmental scientist Professor Jonathan Wong, of the Hong Kong Baptist University , told AFP.

The majority of the 13,000 tonnes of rubbish dumped at landfills in Hong Kong each day is termed ‘municipal solid waste’ (MSW), generated by households, business and industry.

A big thumbs up: Traveller hitchhikes 100,000 miles around the world without spending any money

t19Frenchman Jeremy Marie has spent five years travelling over 100,000 miles around the world, relying all the way on the kindness of strangers for a free ride.

From trekking in 50C heat through the deserts of Sudan to braving temperatures of -20C while catching a lift in Kazakhstan, Mr Marie has visited over 71 countries.

The 29-year-old globetrotter has hitched lifts with cars, boats, planes and even a donkey since he set off from Caen, Normandy in October 2007.

Remarkably despite his 180,000km trip, Jeremy has not paid a penny towards his transport and instead relied on the generosity of strangers to give him a free ride.

During his trip he hitchiked and sofa surfed his way across Europe, USA, South America, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and plenty more in between.

He said: ‘My passion for travelling came when I stayed with a Polish family as part of a school foreign exchange trip.

‘I like to hitchhike, it’s a good way to meet people and you get to see the world from a local’s point of view and see and experience things a tourist wouldn’t usually be able to.

‘Some countries are very easy to hitchhike around, New Zealand was great the people are very friendly, the roads are good and there was no danger of miscommunication.

‘But it was difficult in the US as it’s against the law to hitchhike there, so people were very reluctant to stop and offer me a lift.’

‘Sometimes I felt scared, there’s good and bad people everywhere and so you have to be careful about who you choose to trust when you’re hitchhiking.

60 die in Darfur gold mine collapse

4Դարֆուրի ոսկու հանքի փլուզման հետևանքով մահացել է 60 հոգիDozens of people have been killed in a gold mine collapse in Sudan ‘s Darfur region, said the chief of the district where fighting over gold in January led to the region’s worst unrest in years.

“The number of people who died is more than 60,” Haroun al-Hassan, the local commissioner in Jebel Amir, North Darfur , said on Thursday.
He added that rescue operations were still taking place after Monday’s accident.
“I cannot give exact figures because no one got precise numbers of how many people were going inside the tunnel,” which went down 40 metres (yards), he said.
Rescuers were using traditional tools to try to reach the victims, he said, without specifying whether anyone might still be alive.
“We cannot use machines because if they came near, the ground will collapse. People are using traditional tools and because of this, the rescue is very slow,” Hassan said.

Researchers: Jamestown settlers resorted to cannibalism By Elizabeth Landau, CNN

130501233137_girl_304x304_reuters_nocredit(CNN) — The winter of 1609 to 1610 was treacherous for early American settlers. Some 240 of the 300 colonists at Jamestown, in Virginia, died during this period, called the “Starving Time,” when they were under siege and had no way to get food.

Desperate times led to desperate measures. New evidence suggests that includes eating the flesh of fellow colonists who had already died.

Archaeologists revealed Wednesday their analysis of 17th century skeletal remains suggesting that settlers practiced cannibalism to survive.

Researchers unearthed an incomplete human skull and tibia (shin bone) in 2012 that contain several features suggesting that this particular person had been cannibalized. The remains come from a 14-year-old girl of English origin, whom historians are calling “Jane.”

Scholar: Settlers ate each other

There are about half a dozen accounts that mention cannibalistic behaviors at that time, although the record is limited, said Douglas Owsley, division head of physical anthropology at the Smithsonian National Museum of National History.

The newly analyzed remains support these accounts, providing the first forensic evidence of cannibalism in the American colonies.

What we know from the bones

Jane’s remains were found in a 17th-century trash deposit at the former site of James Fort. William Kelso, chief archaeologist at the Jamestown Rediscovery Project said at a briefing Wednesday that the fort was built in 1607, but has been washed away. Kelso and colleagues began digging in 1994 and have been excavating the site on Jamestown Island ever since.

Owsley and colleagues can tell quite a bit about what happened to Jane when at least one starving settler in the fort apparently tried to feed off of her.
If it’s any consolation, it appears that she was already dead at the time.

Researchers say it looks like someone had tried, but failed to open the skull with four shallow chops to the forehead.

The back of the skull contains markings that could have been made by a small hatchet or cleaver striking it. The cranium cracked open from the last hit. Forensic experts say it appears the person striking the skull was right-handed.

The skull’s mandible contains cuts all over it and inside, which experts say reflect an attempt to take tissue off of the face and throat with a tool such as a knife. The cheek area reflects a “sawing action” of a tool going back and forth, Owsley said. There are also sharp passages of a knife.

At some point in the process, the head was removed, Owsley said.

The damage done to these remains indicates that whoever inflicted it was not a skilled butcher, he said.

“Instead, what we see is hesitancy, trial, tentativeness and an absolute total lack of experience.”

The shin bone that archaeologists recovered also appeared to have been chopped, but in a way that more resembles classic butchering techniques, Owsley said.

“The person doing this was clearly interested in, based on what would have been accepted cuisine in the 17th century, in cheek meat, muscles of the face — that area — and tongue, and also in terms of 17th century traditional cuts, would also include the brain,” he said.

It is possible that more than one person was involved in this, given the disparity in butchering practices seen in the head compared to the shin bone.

What we know about the colonists

In the summer of 1609, the settlers experienced two significant setbacks, said James Horn, vice president of research and historical interpretation at Colonial Williamsburg.

The first was that a large fleet bringing supplies and settlers to Virginia was scattered. It had been carrying 500 settlers from Plymouth along with provisions.

“The fleet represented a new beginning for Jamestown, which had struggled over the previous two years,” Horn said.

A hurricane scattered the ships a week before they were supposed to arrive. The flagship with the leaders of this pack ended up in Bermuda. Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest” takes its inspiration from this event.

Six ships reached Jamestown in August 1609, with spoiled or depleted food, and many settlers in poor health. “On one of those ships was Jane,” Horn said.

At the same time, the relationship between the Jamestown colonists and the native Powhatan Indians had broken down. The existing settlers were already experiencing disease and a shortage of food, and the demands they made on the Powhatans strained their relations.

That was the environment into which 300 additional settlers arrived at the James Fort.

One of the leaders of the group, Captain John Smith — the same one who was famously friends with Pocahontas — returned to England in October 1609 because he was injured, Owsley said, leaving a leadership vacuum.

In the fall, the Powhatans waged war against these colonists, and launched a siege against the fort.

With no way to get food from the outside, the colonists resorted to eating horses, dogs, cats, rats, mice and snakes, Horn said, according to the accounts of George Percy, who was the president of Jamestown during this time. There are even accounts of people eating their shoes and any other leather that could be found. Anyone who left to try to scrounge for roots in the woods was killed by the Powhatans.

Percy wrote, according to the Smithsonian, “thatt notheinge was Spared to mainteyne Lyfe and to doe those things which seame incredible, as to digge upp deade corpes outt of graves and to eate them. And some have Licked upp the Bloode which hathe fallen from their weake fellowes.” In other words, cannibalism.

It’s not clear how many deceased colonists were cannibalized. Only 60 of 300 of the original colonists survived, described as “looking like skeletons,” Horn said.

In May of 1610, the settlers finally arrived who had been shipwrecked in Bermuda, effectively saving the colony. Lord Delaware brought even more colonists and enough provisions to last a year.

There are still more pits at the fort to be excavated, and only 10% of Jane’s body has been recovered, Owsley said.

“I think there’s going to be other examples,” Owsley said. “Whether that will be found — with archeology you never know what’s going to be under the next shovel.”

A special exhibition will begin at the Smithsonian about Jamestown and Jane’s story on Friday.

Chilling video captures the moment a plane dropped out of the sky before crashing in horrific fireball – killing seven Americans

p2Seven crew members of a U.S.-run cargo plane were killed yesterday when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Bagram air base near the Afghan capital of Kabul.

The jet, filmed by what appears to be a vehicle’s dashcam, appeared to take off normally as it gained altitude in the beginning of the video.

But suddenly, the plane, described as a Boeing 747 cargo flight, appears to stall, twisting and dropping rapidly before crashing to the ground in a fireball.

In a statement, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the crash, but NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said there were no reports of insurgent activity in or around the base, which is one of the largest in the country and located about 25 miles north of Kabul.

National Airlines President Glen Joerger said in a statement: ‘Safety is always our top priority at National Airlines. This is a devastating loss for our family and we’ll work diligently with authorities to find the cause.

‘Most importantly, our thoughts and prayers are with our crewmembers and their families.’

The identities of the crew members were not immediately clear, but CNN reported that all seven were American.

Coalition forces said that the official cause of the crash is under investigation.
