Why Turks were Able to Exterminate Armenians, but not Jews

(Part II)

This is the second and final part of a column I wrote last month, analyzing why the Young Turks were able to exterminate the Armenians, but could not carry out their simultaneous plan to eliminate the Jewish settlers of Palestine.

On May 9, 1917, Reuters disseminated the following news report by settler Aaron Aaronsohn: “an order was given to deport all Jews from Tel Aviv, including citizens of the Central Powers [Germany and Austria-Hungary], within 48 hours. A week before, 300 Jews were expelled from Jerusalem. Jamal Pasha declared that their fate would be that of the Armenians. The 8,000 deportees from Tel Aviv were not allowed to take any provisions with them, and after the expulsion their houses were looted by Bedouin mobs.”

Shortly thereafter, Oskar Cohen, a Jewish socialist member of the German Parliament, asked the Chancellor to press the Turkish government “to vigorously prevent the recurrence in Palestine of atrocities” against Jews similar to the ones committed against the Armenians.

On June 8, Aaronsohn wrote in his diary: “The cry we raised was effective. The Turks and the Germans were quick to realize that one cannot get away with slaughtering the Jews like the Armenians. German financing of the war might have suffered because of the Jews. Therefore they ceased the new deportations.”

Palestine, the official journal of the British Zionist movement, described the significant difference between the lobbying capabilities of Jews and Armenians: “The German government knows that the Jews do not compare to the Armenians in terms of their world power, and that the weight of the Jews in Germany is therefore different from that of the Armenians.”

Mordecai Ben-Hillel Hacohen, a prominent chronicler of Jewish history in Palestine, wrote in his diary of March 30, 1917: “the Turkish government has been stained in the eyes of the whole country because of its crime against the Armenians, and perhaps the government will reconsider its thoughts of doing thus to the Jews as well….”

Moshe Smilansky, a leader of the Jewish agricultural settlements in Palestine, after relating reports of the terrible massacres of Armenians, concluded: “The testimony of the eye witnesses aroused fear and panic in the Jewish audience. Who knows what would have been our fate were it not for Morgenthau, the American representative in Constantinople, and the fear of the world press which is ‘controlled’ by the Jews.”

Yair Auron reported in his book that Meir Dizengoff, a leader of the Jewish refugees in Palestine throughout World War I, “worked in close cooperation with the Zionist delegation in Constantinople, which was pro-German and pro-Turkish. According to Dizengoff, there were also excellent relations with the German consul in Palestine…. The consul served as a conduit for transferring funds to the Yishuv [Jewish community], on orders from the German Ambassador in Constantinople.” Dizengoff also stated that the Germans were the ones who assisted and saved the Yishuv. “The fact that Jamal Pasha became more sympathetic to the Jews was due to Germany.” Dizengoff recalled Jamal and Enver Pashas’ threats to the Jews: “Zionists beware! If you oppose us, we will do to you what we have done to the Armenians.”

In October 1917, when the Turkish authorities uncovered the Jewish Nili spy ring, a new threat loomed over the Jewish settlers in Palestine, giving yet another excuse for the Turks to oppress them. They feared that such anti-Turkish efforts would result in harsh counter-measures as practiced against Armenians. The Turkish Governor of Haifa met with Jewish leaders of the village of Zichron Yaakov on October 4, 1917, and threatened that unless they cooperated with his demands, he would do to them what he did to Armenians. He told them that he “barehandedly killed several Armenians, and his soldiers killed thousands of them.” Chaim Margalit-Kalvarisky, the representative of the Jewish Colonization Association in Galilee, wrote the following note in his diary: “I received word from a fairly dependable source that the [Turkish] high command was very angry at the Jewish settlement, and they were consulting about the possibility of a general deportation of all the Jews of Palestine to the furthest provinces of the Empire [Eastern Anatolia].” Kalvarisky recorded Jamal Pasha’s ominous words after a heated exchange with him: “Heaven help the people whose sons are those cursed spies. We taught the Armenian people a lesson about such deeds, and we will not hesitate to take the same steps in this case.”

Having witnessed the brutality of the Turks against Armenians who were accused of insubordination and rebellion, the Jewish settlers decided to be completely submissive and not challenge the Turkish authorities. Prof. Auron observed that “there was not a single attack by a Jewish settler on a Turkish soldier.” What ultimately saved the Jews was the occupation of Palestine by the British forces, precluding further brutalities and massacres by the Turkish authorities.

At the end, 1.5 million Armenians were wiped out, whereas the Jewish settlers of Palestine suffered relatively minor losses. During the war years, the Jewish population of Palestine was reduced from 86,000 to 55,000. Despite the fact that Armenians had also their advocates in Europe and the United States, the Jewish settlers enjoyed the double protection of powerful countries on both sides of the war: the Western countries, including the United States, and Germany, Turkey’s military ally. Vahakn Dadrian, in his book, “The History of the Armenian Genocide,” relates that Hans Wangenheim, the German Ambassador to Turkey, told US Ambassador Henry Morgenthau: “I will help the Zionists… but I shall do nothing for the Armenians.”

While Germany saved the Jewish settlers of Palestine, it assisted the Young Turk regime to exterminate the Armenians.

The State Commission on Coordination of the events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide held its fourth session

6503

Today the 4th session of the State Commission on Coordination of the events dedicated to the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide held at Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex. The session was presided over by the Chairman of the Commission and the President of the RA Serzh Sargsyan.
Today’s enlarged session was aimed at finalizing the schedule and the strategy of the Commission’s actions in the run up to the official launch of the Centenary events. The members of the commission were joined by the representatives of regional Centenary committees from different communities, experts, diplomatic representatives of the Republic of Armenia, leaders of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church dioceses and members of the clergy from the Armenian Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia, Armenian Catholic Church of Cilicia and Armenian Evangelical World Council.

unnamed

President Serzh Sargsyan informed the participants that a conference of regional committee representatives took place the day before that discussed the preparations and upcoming projects in various countries in the world.

In his opening speech the President mentioned that after the first session, in the past three years, enormous organizational and preparatory work has been carried out within the framework of the Centenary events of the Armenian Genocide both in Armenia and in Diaspora and Artsakh. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora were assigned to support the creation of regional committees in different countries and coordinate the efforts in organizing local events.

“I appreciate that the regional committees have brought together representatives of various organizations and have engaged foreign scholars, state and political figures. Clerical organizations, traditional political parties, Pan-Armenian organizations and NGOs carry out focused work. Mass media make a big contribution with their role of raising awareness.
I attach great importance to the role of lobbying and advocacy structures, as well as to close cooperation with local authorities to carry out diverse activities. Armenian lawyers are compiling a legal package on the Armenian Genocide covering issues at individual, community and national levels.

This year Komitas Museum will open its doors; the renovation of the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial and the enlargement of the Armenian Genocide museum and the arrangements for the new exhibition will be finalized by next April, just a few examples out of numerous Centenary events to mention.

Dear colleagues,

There is no need to specify the order of the Armenian Genocide Centenary for each Armenian. Mets Yeghern is both a collective and an individual tragedy – one can hardly find an Armenian who has not learnt about the genocide from his or her family’s own tragedy. The order of the Centenary and its moral, psychological and political meaning is extremely important for current generations. This is why I think that each of us should have a personal sense and share of responsibility to ensure the success of the Centenary events and provide a new level of international awareness.

The order of the Armenian Genocide Centenary is strong both for all Armenians and the entire humanity. April 24, 1915 is not only the beginning of unprecedented extermination and dispossession of an entire people in the history of mankind, a date that of course is symbolic, but also the precursor of other genocides of the 20th century, proved by the later events.

The statutory limitation cannot be applied to the crimes against humanity. There is only one formula to prevent genocides and that is the recognition and condemnation of horrendous pages of the history of humankind. As a nation who has survived through genocide, we have a special mission to rule out repetition of such cataclysms.

On the eve of the Armenian Genocide Centenary we once again openly urge all the states and the international community to recognize and to condemn this unprecedented crime.

We, as a state and people, will carry on our struggle for both the international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide and against this most horrible crime committed against humanity in any corner of the world.

I would not disclose a secret by saying that Turkey’s decades-long official stance contrary to the simple, clear and evident truth has ultimately failed triggering countless questions on the official position among skeptical Turkish youth with increasingly growing numbers: thousands of Turks demand from their own government truth and justice. Many calls can be heard from different corners of the world urging the current Turkish authorities to put an end to their hopeless policy of denialism. Turkey has to understand that there is no alternative to facing the history and recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide, not to become an accomplice of the Ottoman Empire.

This circumstance and the undeniable facts force Turkish authorities to take steps. Official Ankara takes new measures that are sometimes unprecedented in terms of form, yet unfortunately display Turkey’s century-long policy of denialism in terms of content. They replicate the well-known Turkish positions that seek to distort the history, equalize the victim with the perpetrator, compare the incomparable. There is only one possible step Turkish authorities can take to free themselves from the heavy burden of the past and that is the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Half a step is not enough to achieve a tangible result.

I would like to inform you that I have sent invitations to a number of heads of states to visit Armenia in 2015 and especially on April 24, to join us in paying tribute to the memory of one and a half million innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide, to speak out against the crime of genocide in general and to state that the Armenian people has not only survived through this hardship but also took the road of rebirth. Not only did we survive but also managed to unite and pave the way for an independent statehood – free Armenia.

Official Ankara continues talking about establishing a committee of historians and disclosing the archives. First and foremost it is known that Armenian archives have always been open to the researchers who have been interested in the scientific aspects of the issue. The materials in scientific institutions and museums have also been available. However, the whole point is that there is no need of archival research to face the truth of the Armenian Genocide. It is just enough to enter any Armenian house, any family and the testimonies will touch the heart of any listener. It is enough to be present in Tsitsernakaberd on April 24 and perceive the counsel of the day for each Armenian, be they in Armenia or Diaspora. It is enough to visit any community of Diaspora and to ask how their ancestors have appeared there. If the Turkish authorities are interested in the truth they should arrive in Armenia and stand next to Armenian people on April 24. I don’t think they will be able to raise the idea of visiting archives then. Availing myself of this opportunity I officially invite the Turkish President, whoever will win the upcoming elections, to visit Armenia on April 24, 2015 and to face the vocal evidences of the history of the Armenian Genocide.

Mindful of all this, we do not feel hostile towards the Turkish people. Moreover, we try to lay grounds for Armenians and Turks to communicate to find the way to reconciliation. This is why we made efforts and we remain committed to normalization of relations with Turkey without preconditions and opening of the Armenian-Turkish borders, even though Turkey’s desire is only limited to statements. If the desire is indeed sincere, Turkey knows well enough the road to the Armenian-Turkish reconciliation.

Dear colleagues,

Let no one hope that the Armenian Genocide Centenary is the endpoint of our cause. It is a particular destination to mourn our sorrow, to become morally stronger and to achieve justice. The Armenian Genocide Centenary will give birth to renewed objectives, a new Pan-Armenian agenda and plans to build a more powerful statehood and more consolidated Diaspora. With the Centenary we will sum up a historical period and will herald a new phase of struggle for the restoration of justice.

We have an important message to the entire world: we will continue our fight for the recognition and condemnation of the crime against humanity – the Armenian Genocide- with new vigor, enthusiasm and determination,” said President Serzh Sargsyan.

Underlining that there are a few months left before 2015, the President urged to make the most of this representative meeting to exchange constructive ideas and present valuable proposals.

In the framework of the State Commission’s session, the political context of the Armenian Genocide Centenary was discussed. At the session, NKR President Bako Sahakyan, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians His Holiness Karekin II, the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia Aram I, Catholic Patriarch Nerses Petros XIX of the House of Cilicia , the Chairman of the Armenian Evangelical World Council Hovel Mikayelyan, the President of the Constitutional Court of Armenia Gagik Harutyunyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandian, representatives of the traditional parties – the ARF, the DLP, the SDHP, as well as leaders of the largest Pan-Armenian structures made statements touching upon the fundamental approaches the Commission aims to include in the text of the Pan-Armenian Declaration to be adopted on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

The second item on the agenda referred to works implemented by local bodies and to coming programs. Reports were made by the Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan, as well as by the committee representatives of the largest local structures in Russia, US, Lebanon, France and Argentina.

The commission members and the other participants listened to the report of the Commission’s Secretariat on the multi-dimensional activities carried out since the previous session, as well as on the current organizational works, discussed the proposals made to the State Commission and the 2015 events program.

The participants of the session were also presented the logo of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Forget-Me-Not Flower, designed by a working group established by the State Commission. The etymology of the flower’s name in different languages shows that it conveys the same meaning – “REMEMBER!” The latter is exactly the main message of the 100th anniversary. The working group chose such a logo because its color range is associated with the main motives underlying the concept of the mentioned date, and finally, in the Middle Ages Forget-Me-Not was considered the symbol of God’s presence. Five leaves of the flower symbolize the five continents where the Genocide survivors found shelter being deprived of the opportunity to live in their homeland. The flower has four main colors: violet, light violet, yellow and black. Each color conveys a certain meaning. The color of black symbolizes horror and the memories of the Genocide. The inner light violet stands for a unifying idea. The color of violet is suggested as the main color of the symbol. It is widely used in vestments worn by the priests of the Armenian Apostolic Church which is a basis of Armenians’ self-consciousness. The yellow color symbolizes the sunlight which gives a hope to live and create. It is represented by cyclically ordered 12 stylized pillars symbolizing the Genocide Memorial.

Italian ARMY called in to provide extra security for Kim and Kanye’s wedding as guest list grows to 3,000

Kim-bachelorette party

կիմ, քանիյեIt’s said to be the wedding of the year and Kim Kardashian, 33, and Kanye West, 36, are leaving nothing to chance.

Sources claim non-uniformed Italian militia have been drafted in to assist the pair’s personal security team and will surround Florence’s 16th century Belvedere fort ahead of the big day on Saturday.

It’s little wonder that extra resources have been called upon, as despite claiming the wedding will be an ‘intimate’ affair, the couple have reportedly invited 3000 guests to celebrate with them.

The party are then thought to be getting out of the romantic city of Florence on Sunday and heading to a villa six miles out of town, called Corsini Villa of Costello.
Meanwhile, Kim and Kanye will not sell their wedding pictures, despite receiving offers of up to $1million, preferring to keep the big day private.

Nagorno Karabakh . The Keys to a Settlement

ցույցOn May 18, a rally of protest was held in the Renaissance Square in Stepanakert by the youth of Artsakh against the six-point statement of American Co-Chairman of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick made on May 7 at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, in which he presented the U.S. position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement. The participants of the rally issued a  Statement, in which they presented, in particular, the position of the youth of Artsakh on the peaceful settlement of the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict settlement, which is summarized in the following provisions.

Nagorno Karabakh . The Keys to a Settlement

First, the sides of the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict are the Nagorno Karabakh Republic and the Republic of Azerbaijan. The settlement of the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict is possible only with the direct and full-fledged participation of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic in the negotiation process. This is not optional. Otherwise any decision will remain on paper.

The Nagorno Karabakh Republic / Republic of Artsakh/ has not mandated anyone to decide on its behalf either on the issue of status or any other.

Second, the borders of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic are inviolable. Throughout the millennia –long history of Armenian Artsakh it was the Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Region that was an interim status, which not only failed to guarantee the security of Artsakh Armenians but lead to the partition of Artsakh and exodus of its Armenian population.

Third, the Nagorno Karabakh Republic  has no territories to «return» to any state. Moreover, it  is a claimant to its territories that are under Azeri control. The Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict settlement cannot be based on selective interpretation of the principles of international law by Azerbaijan or anyone.

Fourth, the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was formed through free expression of will of its people in line with all norms and principles of international law. Hence, any attempt to blockade the Nagorno Karabakh Republic is a blatant violation of international law.

Fifth, all issues concerning refugees and IDPs should be settled on the basis of reciprocity and only after the recognition of the final status of the NKR.

Sixth and finally, after the indulgence of the brutal crime by an Azerbaijani axe murderer of a sleeping Armenian officer in Budapest, any promise of international guarantees is nothing but a deception. The ceasefire in the zone of the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict has been maintained for 20 years exclusively due to the balance of forces. Hence, the only guarantor of the security of the people of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic is the NKR Defense Army.

Thousands of Syrians Enter Homs After Rebels Leave

հոմս

Thousands of Syrians have walked into war-battered parts of the central city of Homs for the first time in nearly two years, checking on their homes after rebels left as part of a deal allowing them to safely withdraw as government troops took the city.

Men and women fanned out through rubble-strewn streets Saturday, past partially flattened buildings. Many emerged carrying clothes and belongings. Some accused rebels of looting their homes. Smaller crowds made the journey Friday.

Government troops blockaded the rebels, alongside hundreds of civilians, in the area as the country’s civil war raged around them. Hundreds of fighters surrendered their Homs stronghold this week in a deal that allowed them safe passage to other rebel-held areas.

Activists say the 3-year-old Syrian conflict has killed more than 150,000 people.

Address by President Serzh Sargsyan on remembrance day of Armenian Genocide victims

Սերժ Սարգսյան

Dear compatriots,

Today we bow to the memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide. One and a half million Armenians fell prey to such a crime which did not have a name at that time. Nor had a human language coined such an expression or a term yet. They were killed simply because they were Armenians. The crime designed minutely and in advance pursued a clear goal: to take possession of the home country, the property and the millennium-old heritage by exterminating the native people living there. By this they committed a monstrous crime seeking to once and forever annihilate Armenians as a political factor.

Today, nearly a hundred years after the Genocide, it is obvious that we as a nation were not ready to undergo those hardships neither psychologically nor in terms of an organization degree. Up until now, all the parts of Armenian people and all generations have known what the outcomes of the Genocide feel like. It is true. However, the reality is that we have built our state and today, in contrast to the past, we are ready to confront such calamities both psychologically and in terms of an organization degree especially in our homeland. Nowhere in the world is as safe for an Armenian as it is under the auspices of his own state.

Dear compatriots,

The 24th of April is just a symbolic date: it is clear that the Armenian Genocide was not initiated and put an end in one day. Moreover, it is alive as far as the successor of the Ottoman Turkey continues its policy of utter denial. We are convinced that the denial of a crime constitutes the direct continuation of that very crime. Only recognition and condemnation can prevent the repetition of such crimes in the future.

Today, we stand on the threshold of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. This can afford Turkey a good chance to repent and to set aside the historical stigma in case if they make efforts to set free their state’s future from this heavy burden.

At the same time, I publicly reaffirm: we do not consider the Turkish society as our enemy. Bowing to the memory of the innocent victims we remember all those Turks, Turkish families who lent a helping hand to their Armenian neighbors, friends being annihilated by the barbarians and helped numerous Armenian children escape from the clutches of the mob. God bless the memories of those who gave plenty of our compatriots a helping hand by risking even their and their families’ lives. Every society including Turks should be proud of their ancestors who rescued lives and threw down the gauntlet to the Genocide. We remember this.

We express our gratitude to all the countries and peoples who granted asylum to our compatriots having had a narrow escape from the Genocide. Armenian people will remember this forever. Our sisters and brothers have kept showing their gratitude for decades by becoming devoted citizens of those hospitable countries.

Today, the Armenians of Syria have got into trouble. This is our open wound and the issue of our primary concern. We do our best to re-establish peace for Syrian people and our compatriots of Syria.

Dear compatriots,

We are approaching the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide with a straightening back, open-faced and having a state whose name is the Republic of Armenia. It is the homeland of entire Armenians who despite the decade-old illegal blockade and the “neither war nor peace” reality continue to make progress.

The year 2015 should convey a strong message to Turkey. The attitude toward Armenia can no longer be measured by words because it presumes clear steps: the opening of the closed borders and the establishment of normal relations. Our position on the Armenian-Turkish protocols has not changed and the idea of “reasonable terms” is becoming more urgent than ever.

A powerful earthquake shook central and southern Mexico on Friday. The U.S. Geological Survey calculated its magnitude at 7.5 and said it was centered near the Pacific resort of Acapulco, where many Mexicans are vacationing for the Easter holiday.

An Associated Press reporter said it was felt strongly in the resort city but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake shook Mexico City for at least 30 seconds, with buildings swaying as people fled high rises and took to the streets. Because of the Easter holiday, that city was less crowded than usual.

Last night the unnamed youngster was in intensive care in hospital in Buenos Aires. Her carers, who were trying to adopt her, were being held in jail.

The teenager is said to have been given away by her poverty-stricken mum, who has six other children, because she was unable to look after her properly.

An older sister alerted police after turning 18 and finding the house where she believed her sibling was kept.

She is understood to have told her rescuers she was only allowed out of the garage twice in the last 12 years and was beaten regularly with a belt by her captors.

Chlorophytum

խլորոֆիտում

Chlorophytum comosum is a perennial lily-like plant with tuberous roots, bearing spreading to recurved soft leaves from a central rosette and an elongated raceme with small white flowers. This is probably the most cultivated house plant in the world, especially the cultivars.

Description
Perennial evergreen herbs up to 1 m tall and 1 m in diameter from a decumbent (spreading horizontally at first but then growing upwards) rhizome up to 150 mm long, often covered in old leaf bases. Roots fleshy and tapering at both sides (fusiform), succulent, up to 10 mm in diameter. The linear leaves grow in a dense basal rosette, are bright green, smooth (glabrous) with a prominent mid-vein, and channelled, about 300 mm long and 20 mm broad, end in a soft point, and the margins are entire and sheathing at the base. The inflorescence is lax, longer than the leaves, spreading, arises from the centre of the rosette and is up to 1 m long. The peduncle (stalk of the inflorescence) is 2–4 mm in diameter and has linear-lanceolate bracts tapering to a point.

Flowers

The flowers are often replaced by vegetative leafy buds (propagules), which root and serve for vegetative reproduction. The flowers grow in axillary fascicles. The individual flowers are star-shaped (stellate), white and up to 20 mm in diameter with 6 stamens. The floral leaves (tepals) are oblong, up to 10 mm long, becoming reflexed. The style is smooth and small with a minute point (stigma). The fruit is a 3-angled capsule and its seeds are flattish, black and shiny.
Flowering period: During the summer months.

Chlorophytum comosum is one of 38 Chlorophytum species in South Africa (Archer 2003) and is easily distinguished by its spreading inflorescence bearing vegetative plantlets rooting when the inflorescence touches the ground.

PLantlets

Conservation status
Chlorophytum comosum is widespread and not threatened in its habitat. It was therefore not necessary to include it in the Red Data Book (Raimondo et al . 2009).

Distribution and habitat
Chlorophytum comosum is widely distributed from Swellendam in the Western Cape to the Soutpansberg in the Limpopo Province (Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces). It is found from sea level to elevations of more than 1 000 m. It occurs in the undergrowth of forested river valleys, mountainous regions and thickets, on steep embankments, flat terrain and cliffs.

Msikaba river - habitat

It grows on a variety of soils (volcanic or sedimentary) derived from sandstone, shale, dolorite or granite. The soils are usually slightly acidic. The climate varies from hot to cool during winter, and when frost occurs it is mild. Rainfall ranges between 500 and 2000 mm per annum and occurs mainly during spring and summer, however in the Western Cape it occurs also during winter.

Growing in habitat- Oribi Gorge

Derivation of name and historical aspects
The generic name Chlorophytum relates to the leaves of the plants and is derived from the Greek words chloros = yellow-green, and phyton = plant). Although this may be true for some species, the vegetative parts are green and not yellow-green in C. comosum. The specific epithet comosum also refers to the leaves. Coma, is derived from the Greek word kome , a tuft of hairs, and relates to the leaves arranged in a rosette.

Chlorophytum comosum was first collected by Carl Thunberg (known as the father of South African botany) on one of his expeditions to the eastern interior in the Langekloof near Uniondale and named by him in 1794.

Ecology
Chlorophytum comosum often grows in dominant stands in forested moist river valleys (Mucina & Rutherford 2006). This is due to the effective vegetative propagation by means of the plantlets rooting on the spreading inflorescence. The succulent roots enable the plant to cope during dry winter conditions. The small white flowers are rather insignificant and are pollinated by insects. The small flattish seeds are borne in capsules which ripen during summer and autumn. The ripe capsules are held in an erect position. The plant is variable with several local forms. In the Eastern Cape, near Mboyeti, plants have wavy or undulating leaf margins. At Kouga Dam, on the sheer cliffs, plants were encountered with leafy stems up to 300 mm long.

Uses and cultural aspects
The plants have been used medicinally by the Nguni (Hutchings et al. 1996), especially for pregnant mothers and as a charm to protect the mother and child. The plant is placed in the room where the mother and child stay. The roots are dipped into a water bowl and mothers drink this daily as it is believed to protect the infant. The young baby is also administered an infusion, acting as a purgative.

Plants are very popular in cultivation due to their drought-tolerance and their relatively disease- and pest-free nature. In South Africa they are grown as pot plants, in hanging baskets or as ground cover under trees. The hanging plantlets on the extended inflorescences are very decorative. The species is also very effective on steep embankments to combat soil erosion.

Various cultivars have been named- see below. The first two are very popular and are grown worldwide. The third is relatively new to cultivation:

Chlorophytum comosum ‘ variegatum ‘. This popular form has leaves with white margins.

Chlorophytum comosum ‘ vittatum ‘. This popular form has leaves of which the centre portion adjacent to the midrib is white.

Mboyeti

Chlorophytum comosum ‘ Mboyeti ‘. This cultivar has undulating leaf margins. It was introduced from Mboyeti in the Eastern Cape.

  Growing Chlorophytum comosum

Chlorophytum comosum grows very well in cultivation. Its ornamental, gracefully ascending-spreading to recurved leaves in a central rosette make it so popular. The many ‘pups’ or vegetative plantlets are usually given away by the owners and this has resulted in the species being one of the most commonly used and popular house plants throughout the world. The white-striped cultivars are probably more often grown than the original plant. In the garden it grows best under trees or on shady embankments, especially in gardens in the Indian Ocean Coastal Belt. It is a fast grower. In other parts of the world it can also be grown out-of-doors, but is best cultivated in Mediterranean-type gardens where frost is not too severe (parts of California and the Mediterranean). The plant prefers partial shade, especially in hot dry climates. It should therefore be protected from full sun. Plants should reach flowering size within a year.

Propagation
Chlorophytum comosum is easily propagated by division or from the plantlets on the inflorescences. The plantlets can be transferred directly to small containers. It can also be grown from seed whichis best sown during spring or summer in a warm, shady position in a sandy slightly acidic soil. Cover with a thin layer of sand and keep moist. Germination is usually within 3 weeks. Seedlings grow fast and are best planted out as soon as they are big enough to handle. Plants react well to organic feeding (compost or any other liquid fertilizer). Chlorophytum comosum is best watered throughout the year.

Erdogan Waves Finger at Obama During Heated White House Talk

Հարութ Սասունյան

By Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

Pulitzer-prize winning American journalist Seymour Hersh, in a sensational article “The Red Line and the Rat Line,” published in the London Review of Books, discloses that the Turkish government had secretly orchestrated the August 21, 2013 sarin gas attack in Syria, killing hundreds of civilians. Prime Minister Recep Erdogan had hoped that the Syrian regime would be blamed for that chemical attack, leading to a retaliatory US strike on Syria, since Pres. Obama had warned Syrian leaders that using chemical weapons against rebel fighters would cross a ‘red line.’

Erdogan’s plot almost worked! In the aftermath of the sarin attack, Pres. Obama began planning a massive US strike on dozens of Syrian targets, even though British intelligence had informed the US joint chiefs of staff that samples of the sarin gas obtained from the site of the attack did not match the chemical weapons in Syria’s possession. A former US intelligence official told Hersh that “Erdogan was known to be supporting the al-Nusra Front, a jihadist faction among the rebel opposition, as well as other Islamist rebel groups.” Hersh revealed that the US Defense Intelligence Agency had issued “a highly classified” document on June 20, 2013, confirming that “Turkey and Saudi-based chemical facilitators were attempting to obtain sarin precursors in bulk, tens of kilograms, likely for the anticipated large scale production effort in Syria.”

Last May, several members of the al-Nusra Front were arrested in Turkey with two kilograms of sarin. A Turkish court accused the group of planning to acquire other related materials to launch a chemical attack in Syria. Five of the arrestees were freed shortly, while the rest were released pending trial. They were not seen again!

After a special UN mission went to Syria to investigate two earlier chemical attacks in Spring 2013, a person with close knowledge of UN’s activity told Hersh that “there was evidence linking the Syrian opposition to the first gas attack, on March 19 in Khan al-Assal, a village near Aleppo…. It was clear that the rebels used the gas.”

Just before launching the joint US, British, and French attack on Syria in September 2013, Pres. Obama suddenly decided to postpone the strike, using the excuse that he needed congressional approval. The real reason for the delay was the President’s discovery that he was being set up by Turkey for an ‘unjustified’ attack on Syria, but did not want to publicly acknowledge his near blunder with potentially catastrophic consequences for the entire Middle East. Ironically, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was the one who rescued Pres. Obama from embarrassment by securing Syria’s agreement to hand over its chemical stockpile, thus providing the President a cover for canceling his threatened attack.

Investigative journalist Hersh further revealed that the chemical weapons had reached the Syrian rebels through a CIA operation code named ‘rat line’ — a secret Turkish-US agreement in 2012 to funnel weapons and ammunition from Libya to Syria through Turkey. After the terrorist attack on its consulate in Benghazi, Libya, the hub of this clandestine activity, the US pulled out of this covert arrangement, yet Turkey continued to supply Libyan weapons to the Syrian rebels.

By the end of 2012, as the rebels were losing the battle against the Assad regime, a former US intelligence official told Hersh that “Erdogan was pissed,” leading him to concoct a scheme to have the rebels use sarin gas and falsely blame the Syrian government, thus instigating an attack by the United States on Syria.

To personally plead his case for a US attack on Syria to save the rebels from defeat, Turkey’s Prime Minister flew to Washington. On May 16, 2013, Erdogan, along with Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and head of intelligence Hakan Fidan, had a working dinner at the White House, with Pres. Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry, and National Security Advisor Tom Donilon. Infuriated by Obama’s unwillingness to take military action against Syria, Erdogan “fucking waved his finger at the president inside the White House,” Donilon recounted the shocking episode to a foreign policy expert who reported it to Hersh. “The American decision to end CIA support of the weapons shipments into Syria left Erdogan exposed politically and militarily,” Hersh explained. “Without US military support for the rebels, the former intelligence official said, ‘Erdogan’s dream of having a client state in Syria is evaporating and he thinks we’re the reason why. When Syria wins the war, he knows the rebels are just as likely to turn on him — where else can they go? So now he will have thousands of radicals in his backyard.’”

After the August  2013 sarin attack near Damascus, a former intelligence official told Hersh: “We now know it was a covert action planned by Erdogan’s people to push Obama over the red line…. The deal was to do something spectacular…. The sarin was supplied through Turkey.” Another indication of Turkish officials’ complicity was Hersh’s report that phone calls intercepted by the US revealed their joy with the success of their orchestrated chemical attack!

Hersh concludes his exposé by relaying a most worrisome observation from a former US intelligence official: “I asked my colleagues if there was any way to stop Erdogan’s continued support for the rebels, especially now that it’s going so wrong, the answer was: ‘We’re screwed.’ We could go public if it was somebody other than Erdogan, but Turkey is a special case. They are a NATO ally. The Turks don’t trust the West. They can’t live with us if we take any active role against Turkish interests. If we went public with what we know about Erdogan’s role with the gas, it’d be disastrous. The Turks would say: ‘We hate you for telling us what we can and can’t do.’”

For almost a century, successive US governments have failed to understand a fundamental geostrategic truth — Turkey needs the US much more than the United States will ever need Turkey. There is indeed something terribly wrong when the tail wags the dog!

Draft of Concept Paper on RA Constitutional Amendments Was Presented to RA President

սերժ սարգսյան, սահմանադարական

Today, the President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan held a meeting with the members of the Specialized Commission for Constitutional Amendments adjunct to the RA President. At the meeting, the Chairman of the Commission and the President of the Constitutional Court Gagik Harutyunyan informed the President of Armenia that the preliminary version of the Draft of the Concept Paper on RA Constitutional Amendments was ready and was put in the official website of the RA Ministry of Justice. The Chairman of the Commission introduced the main provisions of the Concept Paper and the ways to deal with the pivotal issues touched upon there.

Taking into account the fact that the Draft of the Concept Paper is preliminary and should enter a mandatory public discussion period, Gagik Harutyunyan mentioned that in this period they did not intend to form common and final points of view on all the issues. Particularly, the issues regarding the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, the functional and institutional effectiveness of the judicial system, as well as the form of government and the conduct of elections were underlined.

The President of Armenia thanked the Chairman of the Commission and its members for doing a large-scale work and presented his position on some pivotal issues.

Remarks by the President of the Republic of Armenia at the Meeting with Members of the Specialized Commission for Constitutional Amendments
I thank you, Mr. Harutyunyan, and all the Commission members, for doing this large-scale work. I am convinced that the Commission members’ high professional qualities have allowed highlighting and working on all the most important issues, which are of concern to our state and society today. I am also convinced that the Commission possesses both scientific and practical justifications concerning the issues of purely legal nature. I have no doubts about it.

Touching upon the separate set of problems raised by you, I think that all important issues related to the judiciary, all pros and cons should be discussed by engaging the very representatives of that system. Our decisions will be based on your conclusions.

As far as the form of government is concerned, my point of view on this question is well known and I have had an opportunity to speak up on that matter stating that the present form of government for our country, at least for this period, is the most acceptable one. In any case, that is my view of it.

However, I think that the issue raised by the Specialized Commission, should become, inter alia, a matter of public discussions. Yet, it is important to take into account the fact that the positions of our country’s political forces should not be ignored or unappreciated while assessing the issues of political importance.

For this matter it is important to hold public discussions and to ensure the active and effective participation of specialists, the representatives of civil society and political parties in those discussions in order to make balanced decisions. Those decisions should be targeted at ensuring the sustainable development of the state instead of pursuing the narrow interests of separate groups.

Together we should be able to establish solutions, which are not circumstantial and are beyond the interests of any person or any political force since they might be about our country’s development process and its future. People, political forces and today’s passing interests are all short-lived; the Constitution is for generations.

To launch our movement on this path, I would like to make the first step of my own to set up the discussion on the constitutional amendments in a free vein. Before kicking the discussion off I declare that I, Serzh Sargsyan, will never more seek nomination for the position of the President of the Republic of Armenia.

If the concluding discussions would result in a path to be chosen not coinciding with my own vision, and by this I refer to the parliamentary model of government, I will neither display any claim on the position of Prime Minister. I strongly believe that one person should not pretend on the helm of the state in Armenia for more than two times in his lifetime. I am the leader of Armenia’s largest political force – the Republican Party of Armenia – and whatever the constitutional arrangements we adopt, the Republican Party of Armenia will abide to play by those rules remaining a decisive and vital actor in Armenia. By all means, that is the road we confidently embark upon. I state this since I am very well aware of the Constitution’s role and importance of the democratic traditions for our country. That is much more important than all possible speculations, which simply pertain to the genre of light-mindedness. I state this today in order to guarantee you both your freedom in carrying out the process of amending the Constitution and in general to act freely.

As a matter of principle, I certainly agree with your proposal to extend the period of public discussions on the Concept Paper. I think that as an author of this document the very Commission should accomplish the complex and responsible mission of initiating proper discussions and summing up their results.

Why Turks Were Capable of Exterminating Armenians, but not Jews

Հարութ Սասունյան

By Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

Endless comparisons are made between the Armenian Genocide and the Jewish Holocaust. However, there is yet another comparison that is rarely made: the Turkish ability to carry out the Armenian Genocide and inability to eliminate the Jewish settlers from Palestine during the same period. Such a comparison has not been made because hardly anyone has studied the Turkish deportation plans of Jews during World War I in relationship to the Armenian Genocide.

My preliminary analysis is based on information gleamed from Prof. Yair Auron’s book, “Zionism and the Armenian Genocide: The Banality of Indifference,” Vartkes Yeghiayan’s “Pro Armenia,” and other archival materials. I would like to detail the circumstances of deportations of the Jews and how they were mostly spared, while Armenians were not! More importantly, what steps did the Jewish Diaspora and settlers in Palestine take to avoid suffering Armenians’ tragic fate?

Armenians and Jews, as minorities in the Ottoman Empire, were convenient scapegoats for the whims of ruthless Turkish leaders. Interestingly, the Young Turks used the same arguments for deporting both Armenians and Jews. The Turks had accused Armenians for cooperating with the advancing Russian Army, while similarly blaming Jews for cooperating with British forces invading Ottoman Palestine. Furthermore, Jews were accused of planning to establish their own homeland in Palestine, just as Armenians were allegedly establishing theirs in Eastern Turkey. In yet another parallel, Jamal Pasha, one of the members of the Young Turk triumvirate, had cynically commented that he was “expelling the Jews for their own good,” just as Armenians were forcefully removed “away from the war zone” for their own safety!

In 1914, when Turkey entered World War I on the German side and against the Allied Powers (England, Russia, and France), Palestine became a theater of war. Turkish authorities imposed a war tax on the population, which fell more heavily on the Jewish settlers. Their properties and other possessions were confiscated by the Turkish military. Some Jewish settlers were used as slave labor to build roads and railways. Alex Aaronsohn, a Jewish settler in Zichron Yaacov, wrote in his diary: “an order had recently come from the Turkish authorities, bidding them surrender whatever firearms or weapons they had in their possession. A sinister command, this: we knew that similar measures had been taken before the terrible Armenian massacres, and we felt that some such fate might be in preparation for our people,” as quoted in Yeghiayan’s Pro Armenia.

In Fall 1914, the Turkish regime issued an expulsion order for all ‘enemy nationals,’ including 50,000 Russian Jews who had escaped from Czarist persecutions and settled in Palestine. After repeated intercessions by German Ambassador Hans Wangenheim and American Ambassador Henry Morgenthau, these ‘enemy nationals’ were allowed to stay in Palestine, if they agreed to acquire Ottoman citizenship.

Nevertheless, on December 17, 1914, Jamal Pasha’s subordinate, Bahaeddin, governor of Jaffa, implemented the expulsion order, deporting 500 Jews who were grabbed from the streets and dragged to police headquarters, and from there forced to board ships docked in the harbor. Homes of Jewish settlers were searched for weapons. Hebrew-language signs were removed from shops and the Jewish school of Jaffa was closed down. Zionist organizations were dissolved, and on January 25, 1915, the Turkish authorities issued a declaration against “the dangerous element known as Zionism, which is struggling to create a Jewish government in the Palestinian area of the Ottoman Kingdom….”

In response to protests from Amb. Morgenthau and the German government, Constantinople reversed the deportation order and Bahaeddin was removed from his post. According to Prof. Auron, the condition of the Jewish settlers could have been much worse had it not been for “the influence of world Jewry on Turkish policy…. The American, German, and Austrian Jewish communities succeeded in restraining some of its harsher aspects. Decrees were softened; overly zealous Turkish commanders were replaced and periods of calm followed the times of distress.”

Back in 1913, Pres. Wilson had instructed Amb. Morgenthau upon his appointment: “’Remember that anything you can do to improve the lot of your co-religionists is an act that will reflect credit upon America, and you may count on the full power of the Administration to back you up.’ Morgenthau followed this advice faithfully,” according to Isaiah Friedman’s book, “Germany, Turkey and Zionism: 1897-1918.” After arranging for the delivery of much needed funds from American Jews to Jaffa, Morgenthau wrote to Arthur Ruppen, director of the Palestine Development Association: “I have been the chosen weapon to take up the defense of my co-religionists….”

In Spring 1917, the Turkish authorities issued a second order to deport 5,000 Jews from Tel Aviv. Aaron Aaronsohn, leader of the Nili group – a small Jewish underground organization in Palestine working for British intelligence – immediately disseminated the news of the deportation to the international media. Aaronsohn secretly met with British diplomat Mark Sykes in Egypt and through him sent an urgent message to London on April 28, 1917: “Tel Aviv has been sacked. 10,000 Jews in Palestine are now without home or food. Whole of Yishuv [Jewish settlements in Palestine] is threatened with destruction. Jamal [Pasha] has publicly stated Armenian policy will now be applied to Jews.”

Upon receiving Aaronsohn’s reports from Palestine, Chaim Weizmann, a key pro-British Zionist in London, transmitted the following message to Zionist leaders in various European capitals: “Jamal Pasha openly declared that the joy of Jews at the approach of British troops would be short lived as he would them share the fate of the Armenians…. Jamal Pasha is too cunning to order cold-blooded massacres. His method is to drive the population to starvation and death by thirst, epidemics, etc….”

American Jews were outraged hearing of the deportations in Palestine. News reports were issued throughout Western countries on “Turkish intentions to exterminate the Jews in Palestine,” according to Prof. Auron. Moreover, influential Jewish businessmen in Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire demanded that their governments pressure Turkish leaders to abandon their plans to deport Jews. Jamal Pasha was finally forced to rescind the expulsion order and provided food and medical assistance to Jewish refugees in Tel Aviv.

Անջեյ Կասպրշիկ, Սերժ Սարգսյան

President Serzh Sargsyan who is in the Kingdom of the Netherlands on a working visit last evening met with the Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group Igor Popov (Russia), James Warlick (USA), Jacques Faure (France) and Anjey Kasperchik, the personal representative of the OSCE Chairman in office. The Co-Chairs discussed with the President of Armenia issues pertaining to the current situation of the peaceful resolution process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the subsequent steps.

President Serzh Sargsyan the same day met with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte. At first, the President thanked Prime Minister Rutte for his invitation to take part in the summit held in The Hague by noting that it also afforded a convenient opportunity to discuss the agenda of the Armenian-Dutch relations and to further reinforce the bilateral ties. Serzh Sargsyan underscored that Armenia stressed the importance of continually developing friendly relations with the Netherlands and enlarging collaboration in the spheres of policy, trade and commerce, science, as well as in other spheres of reciprocal concern.

The parties mentioned that the trade and commercial ties played a special role in the Armenian-Dutch cooperation: the Netherlands continued to be one of the leading trade partners of Armenia among EU member states. Nevertheless, President Serzh Sargsyan and Prime Minster Rutte, considered the current level unsatisfactory yet and stressed the importance of bilateral consistent steps to foster the trade and commercial ties, to improve the economic indicators considering that the main legal documents necessary for that existed.

The interlocutors were sure that there were prospects of developing cooperation in the spheres of information technologies, agriculture, pharmaceutics, road constructing, as well as in a number of other spheres.

The President of Armenia and the Prime Minister of the Netherlands also touched upon the Armenia-EU relations. Serzh Sargsyan stressed the importance of maintaining the cooperation level of the Armenia-EU relations achieved previously and its subsequent advancement in accordance with the joint declaration made in the framework of the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius and the letters exchanged between the RA Minister of Foreign Affairs and the EU’s High Representative. According to the President, on that road our country also relied on the Netherlands as an EU founding state.

At the meeting, the parties also exchanged opinions on regional problems and challenges. President Serzh Sargsyan presented the interlocutor the current situation of the settlement process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Last evening, in the framework of the working visit Serzh Sargsyan also held a meeting with the representatives of the Armenian community in the Netherlands. During the talk which took place in a warm atmosphere, the President of Armenia touched upon the Armenia-Diaspora relations, the foreign and internal policy of Armenia, the social and economic issues, the current situation of the Armenian-Dutch bilateral ties, the prospect of developing a political dialogue between the two countries, as well as answered the various questions of the participants of the meeting.

From 24-25 March, in the framework of the visit the President will take part in the Nuclear Security Summit held in The Hague. This evening, on behalf of the King of the Netherlands Willem Alexander a reception will be organized in honor of the leaders of the delegations taking part in the Summit.

Peru authorities crackdown on naked photos and streaking at Machu Picchu

Մաչու Պիկչո

Tourists getting naked at one of Peru’s most iconic cultural sites are facing a crackdown by authorities.

The move to step up surveillance at Machu Picchu comes after videos and photos were posted online of foreigners stripping off and streaking across the Incan ruins, prompting a response from the Ministry of Culture.

They were briefly held in custody and forced to delete naked photographs from their digital camera – but not before it had gone viral on Peruvian social media after it was ‘irresponsibly published to the Internet,’ the police statement says.
Last month, a video was posted to YouTube showing a naked couple streaking across Machu Picchu, considered to be a sacred holy site, as a park guard gave chase.

The couple can be seen running through the grass, holding their clothes in their hands, jumping over the ancient stone walls.

The incident was filmed by another tourist.
