A light at the opera! Sydney Opera House given 3D makeover as biggest festival in the southern hemisphere transforms famous skyline

s1The Sydney Opera House was given a multi-coloured makeover as it lit up the night sky on the opening ceremony for the Vivid Sydney festival – in 3D.

Vivid Sydney, the largest light, music and ideas festival in the southern hemisphere, did not hold back when it opened for the fifth time this weekend.

The world famous Opera House was illuminated in a 3D-mapped ‘visual feast’ of lighting artistry by Australian creative innovators The Spinifex Group to celebrate the festival’s first night.

Vivid Sydney features lighting installations around the Sydney harbour foreshore, live music performances, and over 120 creative industry events.

A ‘festival of ideas’, Vivid Sydney is expected to attract over 550,000 people before it ends on June 10th.

The light artistry part of the festival, Vivid Light, has tripled in size since last year.

In a world first, Sydney’s famous Harbour Bridge will come alive with an interactive lighting installation on the Bridge’s western face.

The display will be controlled from an interactive touch screen, so the public can design the bridge at will.

Mother and two daughters dumped in Nile were ‘murdered in honour killings by 10 male relatives who believed they were having affairs’

A mother and two daughters were allegedly killed by ten male relatives who believed they were having affairs.

The men are believed to have strangled their relatives in southern Egypt.

A body was found floating in the river Nile, near the town of Esna, close to the ancient city of Luxor.

It has been reported that the men used sharp tools to beat the three women in attacks that were meant to protect their family’s honour.

According to one of the suspects, who spoke to police on Thursday, the men wrapped the women’s bodies and blankets, weighted them with stones and threw them into the river Nile.

A security official said that women are murdered for violating traditional morals.

The ‘honour killings’ are not uncommon in conservative Southern Egypt, where women’s actions are thought to bring shame on the family.

Police are searching for the nine other suspects and two remaining bodies.

Honour killings are against Egyptian law, and perpetrators are prosecuted if they are arrested.

Courts are sometimes sympathetic to the accused and give lighter sentences.

Guardian launches online Australian edition

Britain’s Guardian newspaper on Monday launched a new online edition in Australia where print media is struggling, pledging an independent perspective and a multimedia approach.

The Guardian, the world’s third most read newspaper website, unveiled the new site with an exclusive interview with Prime Minister Julia Gillard and a pledge it will operate without a paywall.

This is in contrast to Fairfax and News Limited which dominate the Australian media landscape and are increasingly asking readers to pay for digital content.

“Starting today, we’ll be reporting and blogging, providing commentary, debate and community interaction as well as using cutting edge data visualisation and interactive technology to engage readers in new ways”.

The Guardian says 1.1 million Australians regularly view the newspaper’s global website, making it the fourth biggest market of digital readers after Britain, the United States and Canada.

According to data service Comscore, the Guardian is the world’s third most viewed newspaper website with 38.9 million readers as of last December, behind the Daily Mail with 50.0 million and The New York Times at 48.6 million.

Slovenian flyer completes eco-friendly Arctic voyage

Slovenian adventurer and environmentalist Matevz Lenarcic on Sunday became the first person to fly an ultra-light plane from Europe to America and back over the North Pole, as he landed in Ljubljana after an epic voyage.

“I’ve had more trouble than I had expected, and that prolonged the expedition but what matters is that me and the plane have arrived safely,” the 54-year-old told a crowd of well-wishers.

But his month-long journey was not all plain sailing.

The trained biologist had to make an unscheduled stop in Saint-Nazaire, northwestern France, due to weather conditions and an Irish airport did not have the type of fuel required for his aircraft.

“I’ve had many unexpected events. That is why this trip has taken 14 days longer than initially planned,” Lenarcic said Thursday on arrival at Saint-Nazaire.

The plane was equipped to measure air pollution over the North Pole — a hot-spot for global warming — and Lenarcic said all measurements had gone as planned.

Daredevil teeters along highwire 185 metres up in bid to set new world record despite being afraid of heights

m1Teetering along a highwire suspended between two skyscrapers 185 metres up is really not a good the place to be afraid of heights.

But Austrian daredevil Reinhard Kleindl, pictured here attempting to set a new world record for ‘urban highlining’ above the German city of Frankfurt, admitted he suffers from just that.

Mr Kleindl, 32, used only his arms to balance as he walked twice along a 30-metre-long polyester rope anchored to the two wings of the city’s U-shaped skyscraper Tower 185 above hundreds of cheering supporters.

Kleindl said he was trying to set a new record for walking the highest urban highline, but no one was immediately available from the World Slackline Federation to confirm if this was a new record.
According to Kleindl, the previous record was set by a group of French adrenaline junkies on a line about 120 metres above the ground, between the Les Mercuriales twin towers in Paris, two years ago.

Unlike tightropes, slacklines are not held rigidly taut, making it harder to balance.

Kleindl, who studied particle physics before becoming a professional slackliner, was due to repeat his walk three times during a two-day skyscraper-themed festival that started on Saturday.

Angelina Jolie’s Post-Mastectomy Topless Painting to Be Auctioned for Good Cause

angelina-jolie-s-post-mastectomy-topless-painting-auctioned-for-good-causeIn the wake of Angelina Jolie‘s inspirational story about her double mastectomy, Swedish artist Johan Andersson known for an acclaimed posthumous portrait of Amy Winehouse crafted an oil painting featuring her topless post the surgery. The portrait will go under the hammer and the money will go to charity.

It is expected to fetch around $22,000. ArtBelow, the gallery selling the painting, says proceeds from the sale will be donated to Falling Whistles to support campaigns for peace in the Congo, “a cause which Angelina Jolie herself is very passionate about.”

Andersson says he could relate to Jolie’s experience because he too lost his mother to cancer. “My mother had aggressive breast cancer when I was 15,” the artist says. “The thought of her having to have a mastectomy really scared me and she was fortunate enough to have surgery without the mastectomy.”

“The recent news about Angelina stirred an anxiety within me leading me to paint this portrait,” he continues. “There is an underlying awkwardness in her demeanor in juxtaposition to the natural beauty of her face.”

Sting opens doors of his 16th century estate in Tuscany for weddings and parties . . . but you’ll need a rock star budget to afford it!

s7Brides who dream of a glitzy rock star-style wedding venue need look no further for the perfect location.

Former Police singer Sting and his wife Trudie Styler have opened up their vast estate in Tuscany for weddings and private parties.

But Sting’s loss of privacy comes at a price –  his six cottages housing 50 guests will cost seven thousand euros (£6,000) a week each to rent.

Up to 200 partygoers will be able to enjoy the 900-acre Italian estate’s attractions which include a large swimming pool, a giant chess board in the garden, bee hives and its own, woods, lake and kitchen garden.
Il Palagio, the couple’s 16th century villa, which is 45 minutes southeast of Florence in the Chianti region, produces wine, olive oil and honey.

Guests will be able to dine in the wine cellar which is lined with ‘enormous ancient barrels’ says the Italian estate agency Immobiliare.

Since buying the run-down estate in 1999, Sting has renovated property and bought more land from the previous owner, Duke Simone Vincenzo Velluti di San Clemente.

Sting’s decision to open the doors of his home to the public may have been prompted by new property tax laws introduced by the hard-pressed Italian government.

Immobiliare spokesman Andrea Polo told the Daily Telegraph: I don’t know how much money you can make selling honey, but with the new tax Sting will have been handed a huge housing tax bill last year.

Source of life running out: water scientists

3Մաքուր ջրի պաշարները սպառվում են. գիտնականներ (1)The majority of people on Earth will face severe water shortages within a generation or two if pollution and waste continues unabated, scientists warned at a conference in Bonn Friday.
The conference sought to assess the evidence of man’s impact on freshwater resources, which constitute only 2.5 percent of the total volume of water on Earth.
Currently, an estimated third of the world’s seven million people has limited access to adequate fresh water, according to conference delegates.
“In the short span of one or two generations, the majority of the nine billion people on Earth will be living under the handicap of severe pressure on fresh water,” said the declaration.
Two-thirds of major river deltas are sinking due to groundwater extraction, and tens of thousands of large dams are distorting natural river flows on which ecosystems have depended for millennia.
Much damage is being done by river pollution from sewer drainage or agricultural fertiliser and pesticide use.

Spanish king’s daughter faces tax probe

2Իսպանիայում կսկսվի հարկային հետաքննություն արքայադստեր դեմ (1) A Spanish judge Friday ordered an investigation into the tax affairs of King Juan Carlos’s youngest daughter, Princess Cristina, adding to the woes of the scandal-hit royal family.
A judge in Palma de Mallorca demanded the tax authorities provide him with a report on Cristina’s property and non-property assets, investment funds, financial assets and deposits, a copy of the order showed.
The judge, Jose Castro, is presiding over an inquiry into allegations of embezzlement against the 47-year-old princess’ husband, the former Olympic handball player Inaki Urdangarin.
Cristina won some respite on May 7 when judges spared her for the time being from being called into court to be questioned as a formal suspect in the embezzlement case.
But they said she may yet be summoned to the court in Palma de Mallorca on the Balearic Islands in another branch of the affair: a tax and money-laundering case also linked to her husband.
Castro is investigating accusations that Urdangarin and his former business partner Diego Torres embezzled six million euros ($8 million) in public funds meant for sports events.
The money was allegedly placed in the non-profit Noos Institute, which Urdangarin chaired from 2004 to 2006 and of which Cristina was a board member.

Guatemala extradites ex-president to US: lawyer

1Գվատեմալան նախկին նախագահին ԱՄՆ է արտահանձնումGuatemala on Friday extradited ex-president Alfonso Portillo to the United States to face money laundering charges.
“Farewell, people of Guatemala,” the former president said as he boarded a flight at a Guatemalan military air force base, an AFP reporter on the scene witnessed. Portillo, who had been fighting extradition, earlier on Friday “received a letter ordering him” to the military base, so that he could be extradited to the United States, his attorney Mauricio Berreondo told AFP.

Heydar Aliyev and Armenian Flag Make Joint Appearance

Aliyev051713_0Tbilisi’s Old Town has long been an area where ethnic Armenians, Azeris, Jews, Kurds, and Georgians intermingle.

There’s the Azeri teahouse run by ethnic Armenians on one street, and, on another, one run by ethnic Azeris, where an ethnic Armenian waitress serves customers.

A mosque frequented mainly by ethnic Azeri Muslims sits atop a hill just a few minutes away from an Armenian church where Sayat Nova, the 18th century troubadour who wrote songs and poetry mainly in Azeri, is buried.

A statue to Sergei Paradjanov, the surrealist ethnic Armenian filmmaker whose last film was shot in Azerbaijan, stands just meters away from a shisha café, staffed by ethnic Armenians from the Middle East and often frequented by customers from Azerbaijan.

Home to sizable ethnic Azeri and Armenian populations, Georgia is well-accustomed to such coexistence. But, nonetheless, that doesn’t mean that awkward situations cannot occur.

Recently, for example, an Armenian flag appeared flying outside a privately owned, neighborhood bathhouse that adjoins a park featuring a bust of Heydar Aliyev, the late Azerbaijani president.

The flag was still flying until the eve of Azerbaijan’s May 10 Flower Day celebration, an event to mark the birthday of the late president. On the day itself, the flag reportedly disappeared. A day later, it reappeared.

The juxtaposition, needless to say, is unusual. Aliyev, in office from 1993 until 2003, was Azerbaijan’s president when the war with Armenia and Karabakhi separatists over the breakaway region of Nagorno Karabakh ended with a cease-fire in 1994.

Precise reasons for the flag’s appearance, disappearance, and reappearance could not be confirmed. The management of the bathhouse that displays the flags was not available for comment. “They just chose some international flags from somewhere,” an employee commented, with a shrug.

The Armenian flag appears alongside those of the United States, Israel, European Union, and Georgia, at the end closest to the Heydar Aliyev Park.

The Azerbaijani embassy to Tbilisi and the Georgian office of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic, which maintains the Heydar Aliyev Park, did not respond to requests for comment about the flag’s appearance.

Reaction to the above photograph, posted on Facebook, was mixed, with activists weary of the cult of personality surrounding Aliyev sharing the image, while others alleged Photoshop manipulation.

But sources familiar with the circumstances claim that the Azerbaijani ambassador to Tbilisi personally visited the owners of the baths to request that the Armenian flag be taken down.

An Azerbaijani TV crew also apparently visited the Heydar Aliyev Park to film the bust and the offending flag, but allegedly was denied permission to do so.

When the flag reappeared, the Azerbaijani ambassador, reportedly furious, made another visit to the bathhouse, the sources claimed.

The bathhouse employee, who did not give his name, denied that the facility’s Armenian flag had caused any controversy.

But given increasing tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan, they might yet find that the potential for controversy is far from over.

ANCA TESTIMONY TO CALL FOR CONDITIONS ON TURKEY TRADE DEAL

— Will Ask U.S. to Require Ankara Lift Blockade of Armenia and End Occupation of Cyprus during testimony before U.S. Trade Panel
WASHINGTON, DC – Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Government Affairs Director KKate_Nahapetian_ANCAate Nahapetian will testify this coming week before the U.S. International Trade Commission in support of strict rule-of-law conditions on any new American trade agreements involving Turkey.
Nahapetian will appear before a hearing called to consider public comments regarding the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which will take place over May 29th and 30th.  It will be chaired by the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), and include a panel of senior officials from member agencies of the Trade Policy Staff Committee.
The Turkish government, has, in recent months, lobbied Washington aggressively for inclusion in a proposed far-ranging Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership between the U.S. and the European Union, as well as for its own U.S.-Turkey bilateral free trade agreement.  The ANCA, consistent with a joint written statement submitted earlier this month to the USTR along with the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) and the Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC), will encourage the U.S. government to require, as a pre-condition for any trade deals involving Turkey, that the Turkish government have fully withdrawn its unlawful military occupation of Cyprus, unconditionally lifted its illegal economic blockade of Armenia, and ended all obstacles to trade, investment, and other forms of commerce has Ankara imposed on Cyprus and Armenia.
The full text of the joint AHI-HALC-ANCA testimony is available on the ANCA website:
https://www.anca.org/press_releases/press_releases.php?prid=2274
Also offering testimony will be a broad range of corporate, labor, citizens, and trade associations, including U.S. Chamber of Commerce, AFL-CIO, American Insurance Association, Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, Software Information Industry Association, Electronic Privacy Information Center, Public Citizen, U.S. Public Interest Research Group, Consumer Federation of America, Underwriters Laboratories, Biotechnology Industry Organization, Transatlantic Business Council, American Association of Exporters and Importers, American Apparel and Footwear Association, and American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers.

Chinese woman threatens to jump from fifth floor of hospital unless she is given a cigarette

ch5This young Chinese woman threatened to jump off the fifth floor of a hospital building unless she was given a cigarette.

Jia Li Pan, 24, had gone to the hospital in Zhongshan, in Guangdong province, southeast China, for a counselling session after encountering difficulties including losing her job.

She was in the waiting room when she asked if she could have a cigarette from another patient.

When he refused, she lost her temper and started shouting, going onto the balcony where smokers were taking a break and reportedly threatened to jump unless one of them gave her a cigarette.

By that point all the smokers had fled and a crowd had gathered below the balcony – alerting police.

One officer gave the young woman a cigarette and then after she was offered her fifth cigarette he used the opportunity to pretend to light it – and grabbed her to pull her to safety.

A police spokesman said: ‘I don’t believe that she has mental problems, but she has had some bad news lately and it seems to have made her act a bit irrationally.’

Buddhist monk sets himself on fire to protest against the slaughter of cattle in Sri Lanka

m2A Buddhist monk has suffered serious injuries after setting himself on fire to protest against the slaughter of cattle.

Sri Lankan police said the monk set himself on fire today near the famed Temple of Buddha’s Tooth Relic in the central town of Kandy.

He reportedly had told other monks that he was burning himself to protest the killing of cattle for meat.

The monk was brought to Colombo National Hospital in the capital with serious injuries.

Buddhism, Sri Lanka’s state religion, opposes the killing of any life. Nearly 75 percent of Sri Lankans are Buddhists.

Many Buddhists in Sri Lanka do eat meat, but most avoid beef because they consider cows sacred.

Syria ‘agrees to Geneva peace talks’ in first confirmation that Assad is prepared to meet with opposition

s1The Syrian government has agreed to a conference on the country’s future proposed by Russia and the United States, Russia’s foreign ministry said today.

The Syrian government had ‘agreed in principle’ to participate in the conference in Geneva which is expected within two weeks, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in televised remarks.

Mr Lukashevich, however, said that it was impossible to set the date for the conference at this point because there is ‘no clarity about who will speak on behalf of the opposition and what powers they will have’.

Russia and the US joined efforts earlier this month to convene an international conference to bring representatives of Assad’s regime and the opposition to the negotiating table. The aim of the talks would be to establish the outlines of a transitional government as a way out of the crisis.

The Moscow announcement came after days of talks there between Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faysal Mekdad and Russian officials.

Zoo worker seriously injured after being mauled by tiger while feeding it in the big cat enclosure

t1A zoo worker has been seriously injured today in a tiger attack at an animal park, police said.

The 24-year-old woman was in the big cat’s enclosure when she was mauled at SouthLakesWildAnimalPark in Dalton-in Furness shortly before 4pm.

She was taken by ambulance to Preston Royal Infirmary and the park has been closed.

Cumbria Police said they are investigating.

A spokesman said: ‘The tiger is securely locked in its enclosure and there is no further risk to the public.

‘Members of the public were not at any risk during the incident.

‘Police and Barrow Borough Council are currently investigating the circumstances that led to this incident.’

Local newspaper the Westmorland Gazette said the women suffered injuries to her face and neck, however the hospital refused to comment.

The park, which attracts about 500,000 visitors annually, claims to be one of the best conservation zoos in the UK.

US Boy Scouts to allow gay youths, not leaders

4ԱՄՆ-ի տղա սկաուտները թույլատրում են միասեռականներին անդամակցել իրենThe Boy Scouts of America said it will allow openly gay youths to join the organization but maintain a ban on gay adult leaders, after a vote at its annual meeting in Texas.

Sixty-one percent of the estimated 1,400 delegates of the BSA’s National Council voted to end a ban that for decades has barred open homosexuality in the movement.
“While people have different opinions about this policy, we can all agree that kids are better off when they are in Scouting.”
The text said “no youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone.”
The Boy Scouts, which is separate from the Girl Scouts of the USA, counts 2.6 million boys in its membership.
The Supreme Court ruled in 2000 in favor of the Boy Scouts, saying that the prohibition against openly homosexual members was part of its right as a private organization to free association.

Syria opposition peace talks enter second day

3Սիրիայի ընդդիմության բանակցությունները շարունակվում ենSyria’s main opposition group is set to hold a second day of talks Friday, mulling a new US-Russian peace initiative to end the two-year civil war while the regime vows to crush the insurgency.

Holding its seventh general assembly meeting since its creation last November, the National Coalition is expected to choose a new president, incorporate new members and decide the fate of an interim rebel government.
The three-day meeting comes as rebels face a massive onslaught by President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah in the insurgent bastion of Qusayr, central Syria.
Since the Syrian conflict erupted in March 2011, more than 90,000 people have been killed.
The opposition has long held that it can only enter into talks if the fall of Assad’s regime is guaranteed.
