Jennifer Lopez was forced to apologize after a concert in Turkmenistan on Satruday night because she sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to the repressive dictator of the country’s brutal oppressive regime.
Lopez reportedly changed into a traditional Turkmen outfit during her show and personally serenaded Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow – whose government is accused of arbitrarily arresting and torturing political dissidents.
Human Rights Watch ranks Turkmenistan as ‘among the most repressive in the world.’ The human rights group says the former Soviet republic imposes ‘draconian restrictions on freedom of expression and association.’
The group also reports that ‘President Berdymukhamedov, his relatives, and associates enjoy unlimited power and total control over all aspects of public life.’
The concert was sponsored by China National Petroleum Corp – a major investor in Turmenistan’s booming gas industry – was meant to celebrate Berdimuhamedo’s 56th birthday.
Lopez released a statement after the concert apologizing for signing for the president and saying she never would have attended to concert if she had known the country’s human rights record.
According to the statement, the birthday song was a last-minute request made by the company to Lopez and she ‘graciously obliged.’
The concert took place in at a $2billion resort and yacht club on the Caspian Sea that Berdimuhamedow had opened just the day before.
The glitzy performance for a rarity to the Muslim-majority country of five million people. In attendance were government ministers, the heads of state-owned companies and foreign dignitaries.

Super-car smash up: Dramatic video shows moment at least 17 people injured, including children, after it crashes into crowd during rally in Poland
At least 17 people, including two children, were injured at a sports car rally in the Polish city of Poznan after a luxury vehicle skidded into a group of spectators.
At least four people are reportedly seriously injured following the crash, which happened just seconds after the driver pulled away from the start.
The accident occurred at the beginning of the three-day Gran Turismo Polonia event which draws amateur motor enthusiasts from all over Europe. At least 150 luxury cars are taking part in the event.
Footage of the incident shows how the driver of the yellow sports car appears to struggle to turn the vehicle into the start position.
A further amateur video, used by Russian news media, shows just seconds after the driver accelerated away from the start, the vehicle loses control crashing through a crowd of spectators beside the track.
Quoted by La Late News, Joseph Klimczewski, head of Highway Patrol in Poznan, told local news that the driver simply didn’t know how to operate his car.
Police spokesman Andrzej Borowiak said police were questioning the Norwegian motorist involved in the accident.
Polish news service Wypadek said, according to police, the driver was sober.
Law Requires Chinese to Visit Their Aging Parents
New wording in the law requiring people to visit or keep in touch with their elderly parents or risk being sued came into force Monday, as China faces increasing difficulty in caring for its aging population.
The amended law does little to change the status quo, however, because elderly parents in China already have been suing their adult children for emotional support and the new wording does not specify how often people must visit or clarify penalties for those who do not.
It is primarily aimed at raising awareness of the issue, said one of the drafters, Xiao Jinming, a law professor at Shandong University. “It is mainly to stress the right of elderly people to ask for emotional support … we want to emphasize there is such a need,” he said.
China’s legislature amended the law in December following frequent reports of elderly parents neglected by their children. It says offspring of parents older than 60 should see that their daily, financial and spiritual needs are met.
The number of Chinese seniors is expected to skyrocket from the current 185 million to 487 million, or 35 percent of the population, by 2053, according to figures from the China National Committee On Aging.
The expanding ratio is due both an increase in life expectancy — from 41 to 73 over five decades — and by family planning policies that limit most urban families to a single child.
