Դիեգո Մարադոնա,Իտալիա

Diego Maradona has been hit with a staggering £33million tax bill for alleged unpaid taxes during his successful career with Napoli in the late 1980s.

The ‘hand of God’ footballer, who many consider one of the greatest players of all time, has been notified by Italy’s tax collection agency that it will freeze his assets to pay off the outstanding debt.

However, it is claimed the move is simply a formal procedure – with the papers only having a 180-day validity and therefore having to be renewed whenever Maradona is in Italy.

‘This is not putting pressure,’ said a source at the Equitalia tax recovery agency.

The 52-year-old star, who has been in Milan promoting a DVD series on his life and watching his Napoli play Roma, was handed the tax bill – amounting to 39million euros – in his hotel room.

He is believed to have signed the notification, which legally enables authorities to seize the star’s assets in Italy.

During previous visits to Italy, tax agents have confiscated £3,700 diamond earrings and two Rolex watches worth £9,000 from Maradona.

The former cocaine addict is now a sports ambassador for the United Arab Emirates following his departure from local club Al Wasl in 2012.

French court rules mayors cannot block same-sex marriage

նույնասեռականների ամուսնություններ

France’s top court ruled Friday that French mayors cannot refuse to officiate same-sex marriages based on their personal, moral or religious beliefs.

The Constitutional Council ruled that the same-sex marriage law does not infringe on the mayors’ “freedom of conscience” and therefore should be applied.

A group of seven mayors had filed an appeal with the Constitutional Council on September 18 stating their opposition to conducting same-sex marriage.

A bill allowing same-sex couples to marry and adopt was passed earlier this year by the French parliament and signed into law by President Francois Hollande.

A growing number of countries around the world now allow same-sex marriage, the majority of them in Europe.

Eugene Kaspersky receives honorary doctorate and discusses viruses and cyber threats in Armenia

Եվգենի Կասպերսկի

Kaspersky Lab announces that Eugene Kaspersky, Chairman and CEO of Kaspersky Lab, received an honorary doctorate from the State Engineering University of Armenia (SEUA), the country’s leading technical university. Eugene Kaspersky and the company’s top IT security experts  met representatives of the education and the business community, as well as students from local technical universities during the recent visit to Armenia. They spoke about current cyber threats in Armenia and the wider world and discussed ways to combat them.

“The number of cyber threats is constantly growing, so it is especially important to train more experts who can combat them. The world’s next generation of specialists needs more than just good knowledge of the IT security field and strong practical skills – they also need to be able to think one step ahead and come up with something really new. I am glad to see that today’s students in Armenia are interested in cyber security and are willing to improve and develop in this area. And I’ll be doubly happy if Kaspersky Lab can help them do that,” said Eugene Kaspersky.

One of the highlights of Eugene Kaspersky’s visit was the presentation ceremony where he received a doctorate for his outstanding services to science. The Chairman and CEO of Kaspersky Lab also took part in the official opening of the Kaspersky Lab Training and CertificationCenter within the State Engineering University of Armenia. The Center will help bridge the gap between theoretical and practical education. It also provides future IT security professionals with the necessary knowledge of contemporary technologies, enabling them to gain Kaspersky Lab certification while studying at the university.

“We are deeply appreciative of the role that Kaspersky Lab is playing in the development of information security and the personal contributions Eugene Kaspersky has made as one of the leading experts in information protection. We are sure that Kaspersky Lab’s expertise will help our students become excellent IT professionals,” said Ara Avetisyan, Rector of the State Engineering University of Armenia.

Kaspersky Lab’s successful association with Armenia began four years ago following the signing of a memorandum of understanding entitled ‘Safe Armenia’ with the Ministry of the Economy. This information security project led to the implementation of a number of educational programs in Armenian schools, specialist training for IT administrators in state and commercial organizations and discounted licenses for some Kaspersky Lab products used within government structures.

The cooperation between Kaspersky Lab and the State Engineering University of Armenia began in 2009 when a student of the university won first prize in that year’s edition of the international conference CyberSecurity for the Next Generation. After that, the university registered as a member of Kaspersky Lab’s educational program and signed an agreement on cooperation within the KasperskyAcademy program which remains in effect.  In February 2013, SEUA hosted the latest regional round of CyberSecurity for the Next Generation for Russia and other CIS countries.

British diver sets new world record for the longest warm-water scuba dive by spending almost 50 hours on the sea floor

Շոն ՄակգաերնA British diver has set a new world record for the longest warm water scuba dive by spending more than two days underwater.

British diver Sean McGahern-world record for the longest warm water scuba diveSean McGahern, 38, managed to eat, drink and sleep during his 49 hours and 56 minutes at the bottom of the Mediterranean in Malta.

He remained submerged despite enduring strong winds, currents, surge and one metre waves to complete his impressive feat.

Sean, originally from Brighton, East Sussex, kept himself busy by cleaning up the debris that had accumulated on the bottom of the seabed at St George’s Bay.

He spent hours removing rubble including bottles and deck chairs, which were brought up to the surface by the dive team from World Record Diving Malta team and the St. John’s Rescue Corp, who assisted him in his record breaking attempt.

His fiancee and fellow diver Mikaela Papagiorcopulo kept him company and offered kisses of encouragement to help him complete his dive.

He joked and smiled as he emerged from the waters exhausted but ecstatic at his feat and spent the day celebrating.

Sean managed to beat the previous record set by Will Goodman in 2010 which stood at 48 hours, 8 minutes and seven seconds by over an hour.

Chinese couple face jail after selling their baby daughter for £5,000 to buy an iPhone

iPhone,չինաստան

A young Chinese couple are facing many years in jail after allegedly selling their baby daughter to raise money for an iPhone and other luxury goods.

The couple, identified only as Miss Zhang and Mr Teng, are said to have placed anonymous advertisements in newspapers suggesting they would be willing to part with their baby – unborn at that stage – in exchange for 50,000 yuan (about £5,000).

Police in Shanghai have charged the couple with human trafficking after accepting money for the baby, who was born at home and still only weeks, or months old, when sold.

Having received the money, which was deposited in their bank account, the couple went out on a spending spree, using part of the proceeds to buy an iPhone, State media reported today.

The unemployed couple, who have two other children, were also accused of using the money to purchase a number of luxury goods.

They are understood to have told prosecutors that they were acting in their daughter’s best interests, claiming they had hoped to find a home for her with a financially stable family who would be able to provide her with an eduction.

But prosecutors said they believed the couple’s bank records show they had hatched a ‘sinister conspiracy’ to profit from the sale of the baby.

In an attempt to hide that they were behind the sale of a child, the couple tried to conceal the fact that Miss Zhang was pregnant and she had even gone to the length of giving birth at home.

They are said to have told neighbours that the baby bump during Miss Zhang’s pregnancy was a tumour.

Will the world end in 2032? Ukrainian astronomers discover massive asteroid that could hit the earth with the power of 2,500 nuclear bombs

աստերոիդ

The world as we know it could end on August 26, 2032.

A 1,300-foot wide asteroid is headed toward Earth and could strike the planet with the force of 2,500 nuclear warheads in 19 years, Ukrainian astronomers have shockingly revealed.

Crimean Astrophysical Observatory found the massive asteroid, called 2013 TV135, last weekend and the international scientific community has already rated it as one of the two most dangerous asteroids ever recorded.

Still, the chances of the object striking Earth are very low, estimated at 1 in 63,000. That means there’s a 99.9984 percent chance that life on the planet will continue as normal.

If the asteroid misses, it is likely to pass very close to Earth – within 1million miles of the planet’s orbit, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports.

As a result, NASA has deemed the object ‘potentially hazardous.’

Scientists have also given it a danger rating of 1 out of 10 on the Torino Scale. Only one other asteroid has been given a rating of 1. The risk for all others has been judged 0, negligible.

If 2013 TV135 were to collide with Earth, it is estimated to impact with 2,500 megatons of explosive power. The standard U.S. Minute Man II missiles carries a nuclear warhead with an explosive power of a little over 1 megaton.

The effects of an impact would be catastrophic, especially if it struck a populated area.

The asteroid, however, is much smaller than the interplanetary object that hit Earth and killed off the dinosaurs 65million years ago. That asteroid was estimated to be 6 miles in diameter.

After Ukrainian scientists spotted the object last weekend, astronomers at observatories in Spain, Italy and Siberia, Russia, confirmed the existence of 2013 TV135.

The asteroid will be closer in 2024, allowing scientists to better examine its orbit and where it would be likely to hit.

Protests in Canada turn violent

canada-protests,ցույցեր

At least 40 people were arrested Thursday in New Brunswick, Canada, when protests over gas exploration turned violent, according to authorities.

At least one shot was fired by someone other than police, and at least five police vehicles were set on fire, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement.

“The RCMP has worked diligently with all parties involved in hopes for a peaceful resolution. Those efforts have not been successful. Tensions were rising, and serious criminal acts are being committed,” said Constable Jullie Rogers-Marsh of the New Brunswick RCMP.

Protesters are reportedly angry about the government and shale gas companies moving forward with work in the area.

Police said they were investigating suspected explosive devices at the scene. Molotov cocktails were thrown, they said.

Half-tonne ‘chunk of Chelyabinsk meteor’ is pulled out of Russian lake – breaking the scales as scientists attempt to weigh it

A half-tonne rock, suspected to be a meteorite, has today been pulled out of murky lake in the Urals, Russia.

Experts believe it may be part of a meteor whose ground-shaking shockwave hurt 1,600 people in Russia in February.

The meteor broke up into multiple pieces as it entered the atmosphere, scattering space debris across the industrial region.

Much of the meteor landed in a local lake called Chebarkul that the divers entered in an operation covered live on Russian television.

The rock broke up into at least three large pieces as scientists began lifting it from the ground with the help of levers and ropes.

The scale itself broke the moment it hit the 570-kilogramme (1,255-pound) mark.

Experts cautioned however that it will take time before scientists can certify that the rock they pulled from the lake had indeed come from outer space.

The Vesti 24 rolling news channel reported that divers had already recovered more than 12 pieces from Lake Chebarkul since the February 15 incident.

The station cautioned that only four or five them turned out being real meteorites.

Marilyn Monroe’s favorite bedtime ritual earns her a Chanel campaign – over 50 years after her death

Marilyn Monroe has been posthumously appointed as the new face of Chanel No. 5, fifty-one years after her death.

The screen siren once admitted that the fragrance was the only thing she wore to bed at night.

Chanel will roll out a print and TV campaign featuring Monroe later this fall.

It will feature Marilyn in her heyday, posing with a bottle of Chanel No. 5 nestled in her cleavage in an archival photograph by Ed Feingersh.
The house recently discovered the audio recording of a 1960 interview Monroe had with Georges Belmont, then editor-in-chief of Marie Claire magazine, where she speaks about the perfume’s well-appointed place in her wardrobe.
‘You know, they ask me questions. Just an example : “What do you wear to bed ? A pyjama top ? The bottoms of the pajamas? A nightgown?” So I said, “CHANEL No.5,” because it’s the truth… And yet, I don’t want to say “nude”. But it’s the truth !,’ she said of the fragrance in the unearthed recording.

Monroe takes over the No. 5 reins from the fragrance’s former, Brad Pitt, who was paid a reported $7 million for his services for the brand.

The No. 5 fragrance, long considered a perfume classic, was first introduced in 1921. At the time, Gabrielle Chanel said of the scent: ‘I want a woman’s fragrance that smells like a woman.’

There is no word if Chanel is paying Monroe’s trust for use of her likeness.

Protest at Paris Schools Over Immigrant Expulsions

Ֆրանսիա, Փարիզ,բողոքի ակցիաներ,ներգաղթյալներ

Hundreds of teenagers are erecting barricades outside their schools and marching through Paris to protest police expulsions of immigrant families.

Anger erupted this week over the treatment of a 15-year-old Kosovar girl, detained in front of classmates on a field trip. The government says her family had been denied asylum and was no longer allowed to stay in France.

Such expulsions occur regularly around France as the government tries to limit illegal immigration. The students, saying the expulsions are unfair to children, hope to pressure the Socialist-led government into allowing a recently expelled Armenian boy and the Kosovar girl to return to France.

At one high school in Paris, students piled green garbage cans in front of the entrance and hung a banner saying “Education in Danger.”

Amy Winehouse’s memory could be tarnished as ‘nude photos of drugged-up singer’ are offered for sale online

Amy Winehouse,Ամի Ուայնհաուս

Two years after the tragic death of Amy Winehouse, nude photos of the star have reportedly been offered for sale to a website.

X-rated photos of the star taken during a drugs binge were reportedly offered for sale last week to entertainment website RadarOnline.com.

The images were allegedly emailed to the website.

The Back to Black singer had been photographed hours before the images were taken, in a confused state outside a London nightclub at 5am with white powder around her nostrils.

The supplier of the images told RadarOnline.com: ‘The photographs in question have never been published and no one knows that it exists.’

Radar Online said it has decided not to publish the images.

The 27-year-old singer, who released her first album Frank, when she was 19, was found dead in her Camden home in 2011 following years of drugs and alcohol abuse.

An investigation earlier this year concluded that Amy had died of accidental alcohol poisoning.

Melbourne Airport locked down by police after a kangaroo hops its way into the terminal pharmacy

Police were forced to lock down part of an Australian terminal building after a kangaroo surprised shoppers by creeping into a pharmacy.

The marsupial, who was pictured in the skincare aisle of the store, probably made his way to the right part of the Melbourne Airport – he had been hit by a car outside and suffered minor injuries.

The eastern grey male, who was nicknamed Cyrus, had to be sedated and carried out of the airport by wildlife volunteers.

As he made his way through the terminal, astonished passengers hurried out of its path.

Cyrus was taken to a nearby vet’s where his injuries were assessed.

It is not the first time a kangaroo has caused a stir at Melbourne Airport.

In January a marsupial had to be shot with a tranquiliser gun after leading security guards and police on a chase around the terminal car park.

Ka-Ching! Kim Kardashian engagement ring reportedly fetches $749,000

Kim Kardashian’s 20-carat diamond engagement ring, a remnant of her 72-day marriage to NBA basketball player Kris Humphries, was auctioned Tuesday in New York by Christie’s for $749,000, US Weekly reported.

Christie’s auction house confirmed the sale of a 20-carat ring to an anonymous buyer. It did not reveal whether it was the ring that Humphries gave Kardashian.

The ring “far exceed the presale estimate” of $300,000 to $500,000, said Gabriel Ford, a spokesman for Christie’s.

Humphries, an NBA forward, accused Kardashian of fraud by entering the marriage only to make millions of dollars with their wedding, Humphries’ lawyer, Marshall Waller, told a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge.

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the main electricity supplier in Tokyo and central Japan, said blackouts affected more than 56,000 households.

World Food Day 2013: Towards Sustainable Food Systems

By José Graziano da Silva,

Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)

World Food Day falls on 16th October, commemorating FAO’s foundation on that date in 1945. It offers a moment each year for people all around the world who are involved in the many diverse elements of the food system to come together to reflect on the vital role that food plays in our lives and to consider how things can be done better. The process of producing food and getting it onto our plates is extraordinarily complex. It involves many different steps and players – not just farmers and fishermen, but the scientists who develop improved technologies; the suppliers of farm inputs; those who transport, store and process food; and those who market it. All people are, of course, consumers of food and what they decide to eat, how they acquire it, the ways in which they prepare it, and how many children they have determine the nature and scale of the overall demand for food.

One could say that the food system is functioning successfully if there is a reasonable equilibrium between global food demand and supply. This year’s World Food Day theme “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition” is an invitation to us to consider just how well the system is working and what can be done to improve it.

From a rather narrow demand and supply perspective we can claim that, since 1945, the food system has worked remarkably well. The world’s population has tripled in this period, and average food availability per person has risen by 40%. This is an extraordinary achievement and many economists would cite it as proof of the effectiveness of “the market” in inducing an adequate supply response to the growth in demand from a fast rising and richer global population.

If we look a bit deeper, however, we shall see that there are huge flaws in how the food system operates.

The biggest failure is that, in spite of plentiful food supplies, the health of more than half the world’s 7 billion population is affected by under- or over-consumption. Just 3 years ago, the threat of famine forced millions of Somalis to abandon their homes to search for food, and as many as 260,000 people, many of them children, are estimated to have died of starvation. This was a horrific reminder that the global food market works well for those that have money but fails to respond to the needs of the poor.

Even now, around 840 million fellow humans face daily food shortages that prevent them from working, stunt the growth of their children, expose them to illness and lead to premature death. The health of another 2 billion people is compromised by nutrient deficiencies. At the other end of the spectrum, another 1.5 billion are overweight or obese, consuming more food than their bodies need and exposing themselves to a greater threat of diabetes, heart problems and other diseases.

What is clear is that “the market” alone does not automatically translate food availability into better nutrition, health, productivity and happiness. The most glaring market failure stems from the fact that those with the greatest food needs are unable, because of their poverty, to translate these into demand. They are caught in a hunger trap which is self-perpetuating because they do not have the means to buy or produce the food their family requires for a healthy life. That hunger persists in a world of plenty food is truly scandalous.

The other major failure relates to the unsustainability of the present food system. This has both environmental and human dimensions.

Much of the extraordinary growth in food output has placed great stresses on natural resources. It has degraded soils, polluted and exhausted fresh water supplies, encroached on forests, depleted wild fish stocks, and narrowed biodiversity, leaving these resources with a diminished capacity to meet the food needs of our children and future generations. Intensive farming systems, combined with food wastage on a massive scale, have also become a big source of the greenhouse gas emissions that help to drive the processes of climate change that, in turn, are expected to create new adaptation challenges for farmers. Even the richer food consumers do not yet pay for the cost of this damage to natural capital or for clearing it up.

One would have expected that the rising demand for food would have been reflected in greater prosperity in farming and fishing communities as they responded with increased output. Paradoxically, however, their very success in expanding food availability, combined with the trade protection and subsidy policies of developed countries and the limited bargaining power of farmers in relation to trading houses, agro-industries and retailers, has led to a growing concentration of poverty in the rural areas of many developing countries. One consequence is that 70% of the world’s hungry people live in rural areas and depend for their livelihoods mainly on food production.

And so on this World Food Day, let us share our thoughts and experiences on how best to address these two great challenges – how to translate rising food availability into better nutrition for all people and how to make the necessary shift to environmentally and socially sustainable production and consumption systems. We can all play a part in this through changing our own life styles and must do so if we are to correct the dreadful food situation that I have described.

I am confident that we can do much better on both fronts. We now have evidence from many countries which are committed to ensuring that all their people can enjoy their human right to food that hunger and malnutrition can be quickly reduced by direct measures. These include school meals programmes and cash transfers to the poorest families to enable them to bridge their food gap and so stand on their own feet. By translating food needs into demand, such programmes can stimulate local markets for small-scale farmers.

We are also learning from the fair trade and slow food movements as well as from the certification of food and forest products from sustainably managed resources that it is possible for individual consumers to take buying decisions that improve the living conditions of farmers and fishermen and encourage them to take up sustainable production practices.

FAO’s member countries have recently confirmed the Organization’s top two priorities – to work for the rapid eradication of hunger and malnutrition and to accelerate the shift to sustainable food production and consumption systems.

I know that we can count, dear readers, on your committed support in reaching these goals within the shortest possible time!
