Half of Gibraltar’s famous monkey colony could be shipped off the Rock as they are running riot in the town.
Having been seen in the past as friendly, charming and inquisitive, the wild Barbary Macaques are increasingly losing their fear of humans.
Over recent years, the Barbary monkeys have acquired a reputation for attacking people, vandalising hotel rooms and trashing the streets.
In 2012, a grandmother was bitten in an unprovoked attack while pushing her baby grandson in a pram and needed hospital treatment.
In 2011, there were 104 monkey attacks.
The Gibraltan government said talks were well advanced with a ‘respected third party’ to take some of the monkeys with plans showing as many as 120 of the 200-plus population could be set for the boot.
They are being caught and held in a specially-built ‘monkey prison’, overseen by vets, until their deportation is finalised, with north Africa, their native land, the most likely destination.
Extra staff have also been taken on to run others out of town and back onto their reserve on the Upper Rock where special feeding areas and ponds are being created in an attempt to keep them interested.
