Cast away: Shipwrecked man makes land ‘after 16 months adrift’

Cast_AwayAn emaciated man survived 16 months adrift at sea, eating turtles, birds and fish and drinking turtle blood, having floated over 8,000 miles from Mexico to a remote Pacific atoll, it was claimed on Friday.

A Norwegian researcher said that the man – who only speaks Spanish and has a long beard and hair – was not in a good condition after his 24-foot fibreglass boat washed up on the reef at Ebon Atoll.

In a story reminiscent of the Tom Hanks film Cast Away, the man, dressed only in ragged underpants, apparently set off from Mexico heading for El Salvador in September 2012 with a companion, who died at sea several months ago.

Details of his survival are sketchy, Ms Fjeldstad added, as the man only speaks Spanish, but he said his name was Jose Ivan.

Mr Ivan indicated to Ms Fjeldstad that he survived by eating turtles, birds and fish and drinking turtle blood when there was no rain.

No fishing gear was on the boat and Mr Ivan suggested he caught turtles and birds with his bare hands.

According to Ms Fjeldstad, the Marshall Islanders who found Ivan took him to the main island on the atoll to meet Mayor Ione de Brum, who put in a call to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Majuro.

“He’s staying at the local council house and a family is feeding him,” said Ms Fjeldstad, who added that the man had a basic health check and was found to have low blood pressure.

But he did not appear to have any life-threatening illness and was able to walk with the aid of men on the island.

Indeed, I am pleased to be deserved with such an honor in one of the ancient capitals of Europe, beautiful Prague City Hall. In addition to being a capital of a friend country, Prague is considered to be one of the most important political, economic and cultural centers.

I once again will mention an interesting fact about Armenian trace on Prague: in the XVII century, the owner of one of the cafes of Prague was Armenian named Gevorg from Damascus. Meanwhile, early in the 20th century, first carpet factory belonged to an ethnic Armenian Artin Aslanyan who lived in Prague.

Yerevan and Prague have great potentiality of cooperation and I hope that legal bases will be created to develop and deepen ties between our capitals.

Allow me once again to express gratitude for your warm hospitality. I look forward to meet You in the capital of Armenia, Yerevan” said President Serzh Sargsyan at a meeting with Prague Mayor.

The President noted that there is a community of Catholics in Armenia and the number of Armenian Catholics spread around the world is not few. President Serzh Sargsyan is convinced that, perhaps, it is the reason of friendly ties establishment between Armenia and the Holy See.

The statement of President Serzh Sargsyan at the joint press Conference with the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman

Your Excellency Mr. President,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to pay my first state visit to the Czech Republic at the invitation of the President of the Czech Republic.

We just held substantive and productive talks with President Zeman in the atmosphere of complete mutual understanding. We discussed both issues of our bilateral agenda as well as current regional and international topics.

We noted with satisfaction that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries we have registered prominent progress in interstate affairs. A dozen of documents on different fields signed today and to be signed tomorrow attest to it. We outlined healthcare, environment, decentralized collaboration, trade, economic and cultural cooperation as the areas of prospective cooperation. We stressed the necessity of widening business connections and stimulating investments, promoting people-to-people contacts and developing tourism. The direct flights under operation between our capitals serve as an important prerequisite for that. We attached importance to the ongoing Armenian-Czech business forum within the current visit.

We mutually highlighted the importance of the inter-parliamentary cooperation supported by the friendship groups established within the two parliaments.

We underlined the necessity of consistent development of cultural, educational and scientific ties. This year Yerevan and in 2015 Prague will respectively host Days of Czech and Armenian cultures. Mr. President proposed us to more actively encourage our youth to study in the Czech Republic, and I am surely grateful for that.

We reaffirmed the mutual will to deepen cooperation between our states within the framework of such international platforms as the UN institutions, OSCE, Council of Europe as well as the EU Eastern Partnership.

Prague stands high on Armenia’s European agenda, which is a priority in our foreign policy. About five years ago it was precisely in Prague, where Armenia undertook a commitment to enhance closer cooperation with the EU upon the start of the Eastern Partnership. This commitment was reaffirmed at the Vilnius summit last November. We are determined to continuously enhance and expand our relations with the EU. In this respect, we expect the support of friendly nations, especially the Czech comprehensive support.

We are convinced that different integration processes may certainly be developed based on compatibility and cooperation rather than controversy. In this sense the Eastern Partnership might serve as a natural bridge fostering economic integration from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. We are committed to make consistent efforts toward constructing more inclusive Europe, free from dividing lines. I am thankful to Mr. President for his understanding toward our decision to join the Customs Union. I am also thankful to the President of the Czech Republic for the invitation to the Eastern Partnership Summit that will take place on April 24, in Prague and I am particularly thankful for appreciating my visit to Prague on the 24th of April, bearing in mind that on the 24th of April Armenians across the world pay their tribute to the victims of the Genocide.

We highly appreciate the constructive position of the Czech Republic in support to the efforts of the OSCE Minsk group co-chairs to find a peaceful resolution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In November 2013, after a two-year interval the meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan took place in Vienna, which by itself is a positive step in the negotiation process. The direct contacts on the presidential level are important stimulus to the ongoing negotiations under the auspices of the OSCE Minsk Group, which is the only format of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution. The principles and provisions embedded in the Presidents’ statements of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair countries – Russia, the USA and France – provide appropriate ground for the just and enduring settlement of the conflict. We share the stance of the co-chair countries that those principles and provisions should be viewed as a whole and the attempts to prioritize one over the other will make consensus and conflict settlement impossible.

Միլոշ Զեման,Սերժ Սարգսյան, Չեխիայի Հանրապետություն

Nevertheless, the settlement of the problem is not realistic unless Azerbaijan abandons the malicious policy of bellicose propaganda, incitement of arms race and provocative actions along the line of contact. It’s high time for Azerbaijan to adopt a constructive stance on the exclusively peaceful settlement of the conflict. Here let me make a very important emphasis, Mr. President: we expect from the international community to show impartial approach or at least to be guided by the principle of not harming the process.

I completely shared the view of President Zeman that the regional conflicts shall be resolved through exclusively peaceful means and negotiations.

I assess our meeting as productive and hope that the Armenian-Czech dialogue and cooperation will develop and widen in different fields by mutual efforts and based on already existing grounds.

I thanked President Zeman for warm hospitality and invited him to pay a state visit to Armenia and I am thankful that he was pleased to accept the invitation.

According to established protocol, the Presidents of the two countries made toasts mentioning the results of the RA President state visit to the Czech Republic, perspectives of interstate relations development, questions of Armenian-Czech mutual agenda involved in various areas, the two nations historical connections, also Armenian community of the Czech Republic being a natural bridge in Armenian-Czech relationship and a number of other questions.

The Parties underlined that Armenian-Czech people friendship is a stable foundation to develop and strengthen interstate relations. Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Miloš Zeman stressed the importance of further active bilateral work to realize the acquired agreements and signed documents during the RA President state visit.

In his welcoming address, President Serzh Sargsyan underlined that Armenian people remember with gratitude the names of such honored people of Czech nation, as Tomáš Masaryk, the President of Czechoslovakia after World War I, his contemporary, Czech writer and humanist Karel Hansa, who, in the first half of the 20th century, spread light on Armenian Genocide through their humanitarian, political and social activities.

In his address, President Serzh Sargsyan mentioned the honored people of Czech nation who were devoted to Armenological studies, Bedřich Hrozný, orientalist and linguist, Václav Černý , Ludmila Motalová, armenologist-translators due to whom Armenian eminent poets Isahakyan, Sevak, Saryan and others’ poems were translated into Czech language.

In confirmation of the two people’s friendship, the President of Armenia mentioned another memorable fact: during Chairmanship of Tomáš Masaryk and due to his personal decision, about 60 Armenian born students were given opportunities to study in the prestigious universities of the country with Czech scholarships communicating with and adopting European culture and advanced social and political views. President Serzh Sargsyan underscored that today, Armenian fellow citizens still continue to study in the Czech Republic educating and communicating with European culture.

In conclusion, President Serzh Sargsyan once again expressed gratitude to the President of Czech Republic for the invitation, warm hospitality and effective discussions in the atmosphere of mutual confidence and wished eternity and prosperity to the Czech Republic, Czech people and Armenian-Czech friendship.

Israeli religious party anger at girlfriend choice of Netanyahu’s son

Նաթանյահու

Israel’s ultra-Orthodox party has reacted in anger to the revelation that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son is dating a non-Jewish woman.

Yair Netanyahu, 23, is reportedly in a relationship with the Norwegian national Sandra Leikanger, 25, and met whilst studying at the same university in Israel.

Prime Minister Netanyahu casually mentioned his son’s relationship and travels in Norway with his girlfriend to the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg in Davos last week, Israeli press reported. The relationship was first reported by the Norwegian daily Dagen.

Aryeh Deri, leader of Shas, a political party that has for decades been one of the key power brokers in Israeli politics, reacted with the words: “Woe is us.”

The matter is of a wider importance to all Jewish people, he noted.

Other Israeli politicians have questioned the importance of the issue.

In Israel, there are no civil marriages, so Israeli couples can get married only in religious courts, and only to partners of the same faith.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s second wife was non-Jewish, before she converted.

Scarlett Johansson ends eight-year run as Oxfam ambassador after controversy over her endorsement of SodaStream

Scarlett Johansson has ended her relationship with a humanitarian group after being criticised over her support for an Israeli soda maker company that operates in the West Bank.

A statement released by Johansson’s spokesman on Wednesday said the 29-year-old actress has ‘a fundamental difference of opinion’ with Oxfam International because the humanitarian group opposes all trade from Israeli settlements, saying they are illegal and deny Palestinian rights.

Earlier this month, The Avengers and Her actress signed on as the first global brand ambassador of SodaStream International Ltd., and she’s set to appear in an ad for the at-home soda maker during the Super Bowl on Sunday.

SodaStream has come under fire from pro-Palestinian activists for maintaining a large factory in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, a territory captured by Israel in 1967 and claimed by the Palestinians.

Johansson had served as a global ambassador for Oxfam since 2007, raising funds and promoting awareness about global poverty.

Hundreds of snakes, many decaying, found in house in Santa Ana, California

Neighbors had been complaining for a while about the dreadful smell coming from William Buchman’s house in Santa Ana, California.

And when authorities raided Buchman’s two-story house Wednesday, they discovered the cause of the putrid odor.

Vast numbers of snakes — some alive, most of them dead and decaying.

In some cases, only the skins remained. Mice and rats were also in abundance.

Acting on a search warrant, police and animal services officers wearing protective suits and masks searched the house, finding dirty rooms full of stacks of plastic bins containing pythons.

Police said “several hundred snakes” were believed to be in Buchman’s home.

In just one room, they found more than 50 dead pythons and seven live ones, KCAL/KCBS reported.

Police said Buchman, a 53-year-old teacher, has been arrested and booked on suspicion of animal cruelty. He has not yet appeared in court or been formally charged.

It wasn’t immediately clear why he had kept so many snakes in his house.

Edward Snowden nominated for Nobel Peace Prize by Norwegian MP

A Norwegian member of parliament nominated former US National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize on Wednesday, arguing that his release of classified documents made the world a safer place.

Thousands of people around the world are eligible to nominate candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize, including any member of any national assembly. There were 259 nominees for last year’s prize, which was won by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons for its efforts to eliminate Syria’s chemical arsenal.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee will collect nominations for the 2014 prize up to Feb 1 and finalise its list on March 4, when the committee holds its first meeting of the year and members submit their own nominations. The winner will be announced on Oct 10.

World’s tallest woman saved from paralysis and going blind after doctors remove huge tumour from her brain

The world’s tallest woman might finally stop growing after doctors removed a tumour from her brain.

Siddiqa Parveen, who is estimated to be 7ft 8in tall, travelled nearly 1,000 miles from her village in West Bengal for doctors in Delhi to save her life.

Before the operation, the 28-year-old had a spine ‘on the verge of breaking’ and was losing her sight as a result of her continuous growth.

Siddiqa suffered from gigantism brought on by the tumour, which was located on the pituitary gland, causing it to produce excess growth hormone.

She already had fractures in her spine and has been unable to stand up straight for years – and doctors in India believed if left untreated her increasing weight would cause her back to snap.

Doctors have declared the surgery, which took place on January 16, a success. But authorities at the hospital say it is ‘the first of multiple steps in her road to complete recovery’.

However, her problems are not just physical and doctors say she will need to be treated for a ‘psychosocial crisis’ – having been isolated for much of her life.
Siddiqa was mentioned in the 2014 Guinness Book of World Records as the new record holder after after the 2012 death of Yao Defen from China who, at 233.3 cm (7 feet 7 inches) was the tallest woman on earth.

Syrian President Finally RecognizesThe Armenian Genocide

հարութ

By Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

In a lengthy interview last week with Agence France Presse (AFP) on the tragic situation in Syria, Pres. Bashar al-Assad made an unexpected reference to the massacres of 1.5 million Armenians. This is the first time that any Syrian head of state has acknowledged the Armenian mass murders and identified the perpetrator as Ottoman Turkey.

During the interview, Pres. Assad compared the Armenian Genocide of 1915 to the brutal killings of civilians by foreign fighters nowadays in Syria: “The degree of savagery and inhumanity that the terrorists have reached reminds us of what happened in the Middle Ages in Europe over 500 years ago. In more recent modern times, it reminds us of the massacres perpetrated by the Ottomans against the Armenians when they killed a million and a half Armenians and half a million Orthodox Syriacs in Syria and in Turkish territory.”

Not surprisingly, two days later, Bashar Jaafari, Syria’s Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, made a similar remark: “How about the Armenian Genocide where 1.5 million people were killed?”

The only other high ranking Syrian official who has acknowledged the Armenian Genocide was Abd al-Qader Qaddura, Speaker of the Syrian Parliament, when he inscribed a poignant statement in the Book of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide Monument and Museum in Yerevan on July 16, 2001: “As we visit the Memorial and Museum of the Genocide that the Armenian nation suffered in 1915, we stand in full admiration and respect in front of those heroes that faced death with courage and heroism. Their children and grandchildren continued after them to immortalize their courage and struggle…. With great respect we bow our heads in memory of the martyrs of the Armenian nation — our friends — and hail their ability for resoluteness and triumph. We will work together to liberate every human being from aggression and oppression.”

While the Parliament Speaker’s 2001 statement was a candid and heartfelt message with no political overtones, the same cannot be said about Pres. Assad’s words on the Armenian Genocide as he clearly intended to lash back at the Turkish government’s hostile actions against the Syrian regime. It is well known that Turkey has played a major role in the concerted international effort to topple Pres. Assad, by dispatching heavy weapons and arranging the infiltration of foreign radical Islamist fighters into Syria.

Relations between Syria and Turkey were not always hostile. Before the start of the Syrian crisis in 2011, the two countries were such close political and economic allies that the Assad regime banned the sale of books on the Armenian Genocide, and did not permit foreign film crews to visit Der Zor, the killing fields of thousands of Armenians during the Genocide. Mindful of possible Turkish backlash, Pres. Assad’s staff cancelled my courtesy meeting with the President in 2009 after they discovered on the internet my countless critical articles on Turkey. Moreover, during the honeymoon period between the Syrian and Turkish governments, Pres. Assad advised the visiting Catholicos Aram I that Armenians should maintain good relations with Turkey and not dwell on the past!

In his recent interview with AFP, Pres. Assad also complained about the failure of Western leaders to comprehend developments in the Middle East: “They are always very late in realizing things, sometimes even after the situation has been overtaken by a new reality that is completely different.” Frankly, one could make the same criticism about Pres. Assad for realizing at his own detriment only too late the dishonesty and duplicity of Turkey’s leadership.

Regrettably, the Syrian President is not the only head of state who has failed to decipher the scheming mindset of Turkey’s rulers. Countless Middle Eastern, European, and American leaders have made the same mistake, trusting Turkey’s feigned friendship, only to be let down when the time came for Turkey to keep its end of the bargain.

In recent months, with the increasing dissatisfaction of the international community with Prime Minister Erdogan’s autocratic policies and belligerent statements, it has become crystal clear that no one knows the true face of Turkey better than Armenians, Assyrians, Greeks and Kurds, who have suffered countless brutalities, massacres and even genocide under despotic Turkish rule.

Despite Pres. Assad’s political motivations, Armenians should welcome his belated statement on the Armenian Genocide. After refraining from acknowledging the Genocide for all the wrong reasons for so long, at least now the Syrian President is on record telling the truth about past and present Turkish atrocities!

Hong Kong culls 20,000 chickens carrying bird flu amid fears ahead of Chinese New Year feasts

Հոնգ-կոնգ,թռչնագրիպ

Hong Kong has culled 20,000 chickens and closed a major poultry market after the bird flu virus was discovered.

Authorities have banned local farms from selling to the Cheung Sha Wan poultry market just two days before Chinese New Year, when traders usually see a big boost in sales.

The city has also blocked imports of fresh chicken from mainland China for 21 days after the H7N9 virus was discovered in a shipment from the southern province of Guangdong.

The market will also remain closed for 21 days until February 18 for cleaning and disinfection.

The H7N9 virus passes easily between birds and could develop the ability to spread from human-to-human, causing a global pandemic.

Staff members of Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department have carried out the cull today, gassing the chickens with carbon dioxide.

Two people infected with H7N9 bird flu have died in Hong Kong and a third patient is being treated. All three were infected during visits to the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen.
