Pope Francis Confirms World Cup Neutrality

Հռոմի պապHe recently renewed his Argentine passport and remains an official card-carrying member of his favorite Buenos Aires football club. But Pope Francis has pledged absolute neutrality for the World Cup.

Francis recalled during an interview published Friday with the Barcelona newspaper “La Vanguardia,” that Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff had asked him during a February visit to the Vatican to at least be neutral during the competition.

Laughing, Francis said: “The Brazilians asked for neutrality. I’ll keep my word because Brazil and Argentina are always opponents.”

On Thursday, Francis issued a video message pep talk to players and fans alike, urging them to make the World Cup a showcase for teamwork and solidarity and not an exhibition of racism, individualism and greed.

Argentina plays its first match Sunday, against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Schumacher ‘to be moved out of intensive care and placed in rehab’ four months after skiing accident… but if he was going to wake up he would have by now, say doctors

շումախեր

The battle for Michael Schumacher’s coma recovery has apparently entered a new phase with him being moved out of intensive care into a rehabilitation ward.

If true, it means that Schumacher, 45, is out of danger from dying from his injuries – but the level of progress he has made remains questionable.

It comes four months after doctors announced they would begin the process of awaking him from the artificially induced coma he was placed in following a ski accident in the French Alps on December 19 last year.

However, experts say if he was going to wake up, he would have done so by now.

Medical sources always said that there would come a point when doctors would have to inform his wife Corinna, brother Ralf and father Rolf that there is nothing more they can do for him on the emergency station.

The seven-time world champion’s family and manager last spoke about Schumacher’s health condition in the middle of April, stating that the German ace has ‘moments of consciousness and awakening.’ Since then there have been no fresh updates, fuelling speculation that he will not make a full recovery.

Ukrainian official: Russian tanks have entered the country

ուկրաինաThree Russian tanks and other military vehicles crossed the border into Ukraine on Thursday, prompting a skirmish between Ukrainian and Russian forces, acting Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry told the BBC that the claim was “another fake piece of information.”

According to Avakov, tanks crossed the border at a checkpoint controlled by pro-Russian separatists in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine. Armored vehicles and artillery were part of the columns, Avakov said, citing Ukrainian intelligence.

Two of the tanks split off and headed in the direction of Gorlovka, also known as Horlivka, and were attacked by Ukrainian military forces, Avakov said.

Part of that column was destroyed, he said.

Also on Thursday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin “held a substantial and long phone conversation,” the Ukrainian President’s media office said, but it was unclear if that conversation occurred before or after the reported tank incursion.

The leaders discussed Poroshenko’s peace plan to resolve the situation in the east of Ukraine, the media office said.

Fed up businessman’s last straw: Indian owner of £53,000 Jaguar turns to donkey power after it keeps breaking down

Rahul Thackreym

An Indian Jaguar owner has taken to driving round town in his new car with it being pulled by donkeys because he says it is the only way to make it move.

Businessman Rahul Thackreym, 38, who lives in India’s western Ahmedabad city came up with the idea after the brand new £53,000 car repeatedly broke down.

He claims he went back to the dealership to get the Jaguar XJ model fixed on several occasions, but as soon as one problem was fixed, another cropped up.

He said: ‘I was fed up with going back and getting them to put things right only to have something else go wrong.

‘In order to make sure I could at least still use it and to let the dealer know what I thought of their cars, I came up with the idea of having it towed around by donkeys.

‘Basically, a donkey it seems is more reliable than a Jaguar.’

He said that he had bought the car on May 7 when the trouble started.
The Indian dealership declined to comment on the case as they are still in talks with Mr Thackreym.

Parents beware! Children can spot when you’re lying – and when you hold back information, study claims

Երեխաներ, ծնողներ

Many adults will admit to telling white lies to children to make their lives a little easier.

But research has found children can spot this tactic, and can even tell when their parents or teachers are deliberately withholding information from them.

Once spotted, a study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found children will then try to fill in the gaps in the information themselves.

Determining who to trust is an important skill to learn at an early age because so much of our knowledge about the world comes from other people, explained Hyowon Gweon, lead author of the paper  which is published in the journal Cognition.
The study builds on a 2011 paper in which the team of researchers investigated how children behave when a teacher explained only one function of a toy that can do four different things.

They found children spent most of their time exploring only the function the teacher had demonstrated.

However, children who received no instruction spent more time exploring all of the toy’s features and ended up discovering more of them.

Turkey and United States Conspire to Issue April 24 Statements

Հարութ Սասունյան

By Harut Sassounian

www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com

While it is not surprising to learn that Turkey and the United States have coordinated their official declarations on the Armenian Genocide, recent revelations have confirmed their shameful behind-the-scenes schemes.

In a speech delivered in Australia late last year, former US Ambassador to Armenia John Evans revealed for the first time that the State Department regularly conferred with the Turkish Embassy in Washington on the content of the US President’s annual April 24 statement on the Armenian Genocide.

This clearly reflects the degree of collaboration between Turkey and the United States on the genocide issue, and even more appalling, American officials’ succumbing to the gag rule imposed by a denialist regime!

The American-Turkish collusion on the Armenian Genocide issue was recently corroborated by Deniz Kahraman in the Aydinlik Turkish newspaper, revealing that the two governments jointly drafted the statement that Prime Minister Erdogan issued on April 23, 2014. He offered condolences to Armenians, Turks, and others who died from various causes during World War I, thus equating the deaths of Turkish soldiers with Armenian Genocide victims.

Basing his information on unnamed diplomatic sources, Kahraman wrote that the White House had been fully aware of the content of Erdogan’s statement in advance of its release. In fact, the Turkish Prime Minister’s text was prepared with U.S. input and finalized by officials in both countries. It appears that the initial text was prepared by the Turkish Foreign Ministry, after which the White House made some modifications, “based on U.S. sensitivities” on this issue. On April 21, the Turkish Foreign Ministry forwarded the final text to Prime Minister Erdogan’s office which released it to the public on April 23.

Kahraman also revealed that in return for accepting U.S. modifications of Erdogan’s statement, Washington offered to block the pending Armenian Genocide resolution in the Senate, after its adoption by the Foreign Relations Committee in early April.

Aydinlik reported that Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has personally followed since last year the Armenian Diaspora’s preparations for the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Turkey is reportedly evaluating its countermoves, which include convincing the Armenian government to revive the comatose Armenian-Turkish protocols, while simultaneously energizing the mediating efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group to resolve the Karabagh (Artsakh) conflict through public diplomacy.

According to Aydinlik, Ankara is evaluating its plans on how best to counter Armenians who are pursuing their demands from Turkey through three separate channels: “legal, political, and public opinion.” Kahraman reported that a serious political rift emerged last June between Turkey and the US, after which Washington started pressuring Turkey to take more resolute steps on the Armenian Genocide issue and normalize relations with Israel. To appease the United States, the Turkish Prime Minister issued a statement on April 23, on the eve of the 99th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Aydinlik also reported that the decision of the European Court of Human Rights in favor of Turkish denialist Dogu Perincek had strengthened Ankara’s hand in international circles. However, Washington wanted Turkey to be more accommodating on the Armenian Genocide issue. That is why Turkish and US officials orchestrated the release of a public statement by Erdogan on April 23, right before Pres. Obama’s own statement on April 24.

It is therefore not surprising that State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki had high praise for Erdogan’s April 23 statement, describing it as a positive step that would pave the way for improved relations between Armenia and Turkey. Unbeknownst to the public, the State Department was in fact praising a statement that it had helped draft.

While Turkey and the United States are playing a dishonest game of publicly supporting each other’s privately orchestrated statements on the Armenian Genocide, Foreign Minister Davutoglu let the cat out of the bag by announcing in Parliament that Erdogan’s April 23 message of condolences was part of the Turkish campaign to undermine Armenian efforts to commemorate the Centennial of the Genocide.

Finally, I wish to remind all those who have wrongly claimed that Erdogan’s April 23 message was an unprecedented pronouncement by a Turkish leader, almost 90 years ago, on June 22, 1926, Pres. Kemal Ataturk made a truly bold statement in an interview with the Los Angeles Examiner: “These leftovers of the Young Turk Party who should have been made to account for the lives of millions of our Christian subjects who were ruthlessly driven en masse from their homes and massacred….”

World’s smallest school: Italian girl, 8, is the ONLY pupil at elementary school with one teacher… and lots of imaginary friends

elementary - Alpette, Turin

There’s a teacher in Italy who has very few problems controlling her class – because there’s only one pupil in it.

In fact, there’s only one pupil in the entire school.

The elementary in the tiny town of Alpette, Turin, is believed to be the smallest in the world and is attended by eight-year-old Sofia Viola.

The third-grade student is taught all her subjects by 33-year-old Isabella Carvelli – the only teacher at the school.
And she admits it is sometimes so lonely she has to imagine there are other children in the classroom.

Sofia hasn’t always been the only student at the school, which used to be the city hall.

Last year there were four older pupils but they moved on when they finished fifth grade.

Next year, she will be joined by some pupils from kindergarten – but for now she has the whole classroom to herself.

Sofia’s favourite subjects are Italian and English and she loves school outings in to the surrounding mountains.

She also gets to visit a larger school twice a week where she socialises with other children her age.

Brazil Ready to Finally Get World Cup Underway

Previews - Final Draw For The 2014 FIFA World Cup

It’s almost time. The day Brazilians have been anxiously waiting for is finally arriving.

Brazil plays Croatia on Thursday to get the home World Cup underway, beginning its quest for a sixth world title almost seven years after the nation was picked as host.

After so much talk about delays, protests and problems, fans at last are getting a chance to cheer for the national team on home soil in football’s showcase tournament.

If Brazil wins the opening game, the fact that the stadium in Sao Paulo isn’t even fully finished yet will quickly be forgotten. A loss, quite simply, is unthinkable.

Brazil hasn’t hosted the World Cup since 1950, when it endured a heartbreaking loss to Uruguay in the final. This time, everybody knows that only the title will be enough to please the home crowd.

Subway Strike Suspended in Sao Paulo, May Hit Rio

սան-պաուլո

A paralyzing subway strike has been suspended, though union officials warn that if their demands for higher pay aren’t met, they will call workers off the job again Thursday — the day Sao Paulo hosts the opening match of Brazil’s World Cup.

Union members voted Monday night to temporarily suspend the strike they began last week, but also decided they would take a new vote Wednesday to determine whether to resume the work stoppage Thursday.

Meanwhile, a union representing subway workers in Rio de Janeiro said members would vote Tuesday evening on whether to strike.

The actions are a severe threat for World Cup fans because the subways in both cities are being counted on as the main way for spectators to get to the stadiums.

Union officials in Sao Paulo met with the state government Monday afternoon but the parties could not agree on the size of a raise for subway workers, who went on strike Thursday and threw already congested traffic into chaos in the city of 11 million.

It includes two online classes twice a week and one face-to-face communicative English class with a local teacher once a week. The pilot phase includes approximately 150 participants from Armavir, Gavar, Yeghegnadzor and Goris.

25 students swept away after Indian dam’s sluices release flood of water downstream without warning

River Beas1

Rescuers searching a Himalayan river for dozens of Indian students, who were swept away when a dam released a rush of water, have retrieved four bodies.

The 25 students from the southern city of Hyderabad had been taking photographs on the banks of the Beas River on Sunday when they were engulfed by the water from the Larji hydropower station near the mountain resort town of Manali in Himachal Pradesh.

They had been on a 10-day field trip with around 48 students, some of whom managed to scramble to safety.

Police in Manali said four bodies were recovered Monday morning after the search resumed at dawn. They said a shortage of boats and divers was hampering the operation.

Pakistani Taliban claims responsibility for Karachi airport attack; 28 dead

Պակիստանի օդանավակայան

The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for an hours-long attack at the country’s largest and busiest airport that killed at least 28 people.

Speaking from an undisclosed location, Pakistani Taliban commander Abdullah Bahar said the attack overnight at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport was retaliation for the death of former chief Hakimullah Mehsud.

Bahar warned more attacks will follow.

Late Sunday night, militants armed with guns, grenades and suicide vests stormed the cargo area of the airport.

The attack lasted five hours.

When it was over, 28 people were dead — including eight members of airport security forces, two Pakistan International Airlines employees and one ranger.

Another 24 people were injured, the military said.

All 10 militants involved in the attack were killed, military spokesman Maj. Gen. Asim Bajwa said. Two of them detonated suicide vests, he said.

A building caught fire in the attack, but no planes were damaged, Bajwa said.

Section of Paris bridge begins to collapse under weight of ‘love locks’ left by tourists – prompting calls for padlock ban

Tourists have been evacuated from one of the most iconic bridges in Paris after it began to crumble under the weight of thousands of ‘love locks’.

A chunk of the Pont des Arts bridge fell away on Sunday night and the police were called to seal off the area which remains closed today.

It is a popular custom for tourists to secure a padlock to the bridge branded with their names as a romantic gesture, but the weight of the locks is damaging the metal bridge, which was originally completed in 1804 but rebuilt in the 1980s following damage n the two World Wars.

It has become common practice for visitors to buy a padlock, attach it to a bridge, and then throw the key into the river, in Paris’s case the Seine.

The practice has been encouraged by American celebrities including Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, who spent a lot of time dating in Paris before their wedding in Italy last month.

A ‘Not Love Locks’ campaign was launched in Paris by two Americans in February, in response to some 700,000 padlocks appearing around the city.

Anne Hidalgo, the Socialist mayor of Paris, has so far resisted calls to take action over the vandalism, but the bridge collapse could change that.

North Korea: We’ve detained another American

north-korea-detained-american

North Korea announced Friday that it has detained a U.S. citizen who it says entered the secretive country as a tourist in April and broke the law.

The news brings the number of Americans believed to be held in the communist nation to three.

In a brief English-language article, KCNA gave the American’s name as Jeffrey Edward Fowle, saying he arrived as a tourist on April 29. It didn’t give any other details.

Citing unidentified diplomatic sources, the Japanese news agency Kyodo reported that Fowle was part of a tour group and that he was detained in mid-May after allegedly leaving a Bible in a hotel where he had been staying.

The U.S. State Department said it was “aware of reports that a third U.S. citizen was detained in North Korea.” But it declined to provide any further information, saying it couldn’t share details about specific cases without written consent from an individual.
