‘I don’t mind being called Borat if it means I am going to be famous’: Introducing the Kazakh factory worker whose YouTube breakdancing routines could spell stardom

Աջդոս Իբրաև

What started out as a joke among colleagues during the odd lunchbreak has turned into an online following by thousands.

Ajdos Ibraev, from Kazakhstan, has amassed an extensive fan base after videos of him breakdancing while working at a factory went viral on YouTube.

And the 26-year-old couldn’t be more pleased with his newfound fame – for his ambition is to become bigger than Borat.

He began his dance routines by entertaining the workers during his lunchbreak at the factory where he works in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

His antics went viral after a colleague filmed his moves and posted the footage online.

In the video, Mr Ibraev can be seen moving to the beat of ‘Do it all night’ by Darius and Finla, while wearing an orange high visibility jacket.

It is one of numerous routines he performs at weddings, social functions and dance groups.

He now hopes the success of his video will give him the wider audience he craves.

Russian television reporter killed in Ukraine

Ուկրաինայում ռուս լրագրող է զոհվել

A Russian television reporter was killed Tuesday while covering the crisis in Ukraine, according to state-run media.

Igor Kornelyuk, a correspondent with Russia’s state-run VGTRK, came under mortar fire along with his crew near the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk, according to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, a regional security bloc.

Kornelyuk later died at a Luhansk hospital, said ITAR-Tass, a Russian government news agency.

“This death is yet another horrid reminder that not enough is being done to protect journalists who risk their lives reporting from conflict zones in Ukraine,” said Dunja Mijatovic, the OSCE’s representative on freedom of the media.

Mijatovic also said the crew’s sound engineer, Anton Voloshin, is missing.

Much of the conflict has been centered in Luhansk. On Monday, hundreds of pro-Russian militants carried out a coordinated assault on a border guard base there. Five of those militants were killed in the attack, said Oleg Slobodyan, the spokesman for the Ukrainian State Border Guard Service. Seven people were also killed Monday in a separate attack at a Luhansk government building, health officials said.

Art you’ll never forget: Extraordinary elephants create beautiful paintings using their trunks, feet and special brushes

It’s well-known that elephants are intelligent and graceful creatures – but these animals have taken that reputation a step further by becoming professional painters.

The group of seven Asian elephants hold specially-designed brushed in their trunks, which they use to create beautiful floral scenes.

And the clever mammals, who live in Thailand have even developed a skill that humans can’t match – the ability to suck up paint in their trunks to spray it over a canvas like an aerosol can.

For slightly less precise images, the elephants can also use their huge feet – which they dip in paint then use to daub large canvasses on the floor.
The amazing fruits of their labour are then sold on by the sanctuary – for as much as £1,300 each – and the money used to support the Maesa Elephant Camp, where the seven live.

Teaching elephants to paint was a technique pioneer at Maesa, and is now used in several other sanctuaries to help raise money for the animals.

The most sophisticated elephant artists – who were trained by a Chinese painter nine years ago – are now skilled enough to paint realistic-looking bunches of flowers, rather than the more impressionistic work favour by the others.

How Germany’s boys celebrated winning 4-0 against Portugal: By welcoming Angela Merkel into the dressing room (and if you look carefully you’ll see they’re not all fully clothed!)

Her face said it all – Angela Merkel loves football.

And after watching her national side thump Portugal in their opening match at the World Cup in Brazil, the German Chancellor looks as chuffed as a 10-year-old fan as she posed with the team in the dressing room.

The team’s star striker Lukas Podolski even posted a happy selfie with the Germany’s leader following the 4-0 drubbing.

The 59-year-old football fan threw her arms aloft in celebration as she watched the ruthlessly-efficient Die Mannschaft from the stands in Salvador.

The dignitaries around her – which included former France star and current Uefa chief Michael Platini – were more controlled.

Miley Cyrus Feeling Cheated After Losing to Selena Gomez at MuchMusic Awards

Miley Cyrus is apparently upset that she didn’t win anything at the 2014 MuchMusic Video Awards that took place on Sunday, June 15 in Toronto, Canada. The singer took to Twitter to express her dissatisfaction with the awards show’s voting system.

Many speculate that Cyrus is pissed she lost the International Artist of the Year award to fellow former Disney princess Selena Gomez.

The two stars are reportedly not on good terms.

Cyrus, however, didn’t only lose to Gomez at the Sunday event. The 21-year-old performer had her “Wrecking Ball” clip nominated for the International Video of the Year award, which last night went to Lorde for her “Royals”.

The producers of MuchMusic Awards have reacted to Cyrus’ comment about the voting system. In a Twitter post, they said, “Anyone saying our voting is ‘rigged’ should know that we have our own reliable tracking system.”

Plane forced to abort landing after air traffic controller told pilot he couldn’t touch down – then admitted it was a JOKE

Delta plane

An air traffic controller who allegedly joked to a pilot that he couldn’t land is being investigated after the plane was forced to circle a busy airport for an hour and a half.

As Delta Flight 360 came in to land at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the controller reportedly joked that the plane couldn’t land.

However, according to local news organisation 11Alive Atlanta, the pilot had already changed course, ascending back to 40,000ft after aborting the landing.

The plane was then forced to circle the airport for an hour and a half while the situation on the ground was clarified and the plane could land safely.

An FAA spokesperson told 11Alive that there was never any danger for the pilot and passengers.

A spokesperson said: ‘The FAA is investigating air traffic communications with Delta 630, a Boeing 777 aircraft on approach to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.’

Poll finds Bill Clinton by far the most admired U.S. president of the last 25 years

A new poll says Bill Clinton is the most admired president of the last 25 years by a wide margin.

In a Wall Street Journal/NBC News/Annenberg Survey Clinton was named most admired by 42 per cent of respondents.

Coming in second with 18 per cent was Barack Obama, followed by George W. Bush at 17 per cent and George H.W. Bush at 16 per cent.

The Wall Street Journal reports that 1,238 adults responded to the poll from June 2-8.
The Wall Street Journal noted that the poll results were a reflection of how much Clinton had done to polish his image since leaving the White House in 2000.

The poll is the latest evidence that the Clinton’s are America’s most popular political figures at the moment.

A poll released in May showed that 55 per cent of responders said they would vote for Hillary Clinton as presidential candidate in 2016, the Washington Post reports.

Russia Cuts Gas Supply to Ukraine as Tensions Grow

Russian state-owned gas firm Gazprom says it has cut off supplies to Ukraine after negotiators failed to resolve a payment dispute before a key deadline expired.

Representatives from Ukraine, Russia and the European Union held meetings over the weekend in an effort to avert the crisis, but no agreement was reached.

Gazprom said Monday that Ukraine’s total debt is $4.5 billion. The state-owned gas firm will now only deliver gas that Ukraine has paid for in advance.

Both sides said they have filed claims with an international arbitration court in Stockholm.

The gas dispute between Moscow and Kiev has escalated as relations between the two countries have deteriorated.

Europe and the U.S. have imposed sanctions on Russia for its annexation of Crimea, while analysts have accused Russia of using natural gas supplies as a political tool.

In recent weeks, violence has again flared in eastern Ukraine as government forces clashed with pro-Russian militants. The military conflict was clearly having an effect on gas negotiations.

Europe relies on Russia for more than 30% of its gas, and half of that is pumped through Ukraine. Analysts worry that a disruption in supplies to Ukraine could hurt European companies and households.

Kupriyanov said Monday that “gas designated for European consumers is flowing in full accordance with the contract’s figures.”

48 Killed in Terror Attack on Kenya Town, Police Say

kenya-vehicles-destroyedDozens of extremists attacked a Kenyan coastal town for hours, killing those who couldn’t answer questions about Islam and those who didn’t know the Somali language, officials and witnesses said Monday. At least 48 people were killed and two hotels were set on fire.

The assault in Mpeketoni began Sunday night as residents watched World Cup matches on TV and lasted until early Monday, with little resistance put up by Kenya’s security forces. Cars and buildings still smoldered at daybreak.

Authorities blamed al-Shabab, Somalia’s al-Qaida-linked terror group, who have vowed to carry out terror attacks to avenge the Kenyan military presence in Somali. Along with its Somali fighters, the group also has many Kenyan adherents.

Kenya’s top police commander, David Kimaiyo, said the death toll was 48. A police spokeswoman said authorities believe that several dozen attackers took part.

Mpeketoni is about 20 miles (30 kilometers) southwest of the tourist center of Lamu.

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL — MESSAGE ON WORLD DAY TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION

պանգի մուն

“Land belongs to the future, let us climate-proof it”

Land degradation, caused or exacerbated by climate change, is not only a danger to livelihoods, but also a threat to peace and stability.  The warning signs lie in conflict between pastoralists and subsistence farmers competing for more productive land and communities fighting over increasingly scarce water resources.  We see the symptoms of insecurity in global food market volatility, internal displacement and mass migration.

While land degradation is acutely felt in the world’s arid lands, some 80 per cent is actually occurring outside these areas.  More than 1.5 billion people subsist on land that is degrading – the majority of whom are small farmers.  Climate change directly threatens their productivity.  In many regions, freshwater resources are declining, food-growing areas are shifting and crop yields are faltering.

Globally, unpredictable and extreme weather is predicted to have an even greater impact on food production.  With world population rising, it is urgent that we work to build the resilience of all productive land resources and the communities that depend on them.  We need to manage the land sustainably, avoid further degradation, and reclaim and repair that which has been damaged.  More than 2 billion hectares of land have potential for restoration and rehabilitation.  We need to inspire action that will prompt the recovery of these areas.

Recovering land that is degrading will have multiple benefits.  We can avert the worst effects of climate change, produce more food and ease competition over resources.  We can preserve vital ecosystem services, such as water retention, which protects us from floods or droughts.  And a comprehensive and large-scale approach to land recovery can create new jobs, business opportunities and livelihoods, allowing populations to not only survive but thrive.

The theme of this year’s World Day to Combat Desertification is “Land belongs to the future, let’s climate-proof it”.  It can be done, as communities in Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali have shown by recovering more than 5 million hectares of degraded land.  Let us take inspiration from these and other examples and protect and nurture the land for this and future generations.

How the world watched the World Cup: From rebels in bombed-out Syria to astronauts in space – proof we are all the same when football’s on the telly

outer space

It kicked off last night with a match between the hosts Brazil and plucky little Croatia. The world was shocked when Marcelo’s own goal gave the Europeans an early lead but a dodgy penalty and poor refereeing led to Brazil running out 3-1 winners.

From outer space to Syrian rebels and brave Kenyans, it seems the world (and those outside of it) cannot get enough of the World Cup.

Astronauts on the international space station stopped their experiments to watch the game, Syrian militants in Aleppo put down their guns and the more stable inmates of the Asuncion Psychiatric Hospital in Asuncion, Paraguay, were allowed to watch the World Cup opener on an old television set although they had to stay behind bars and were not allowed too near the set.

The homeless in suburbs of Rio de Janeiro gathered outside shops to view the game on the owner’s telly while in Nairobi, Kenya fans gathered to watch despite a threat from despite the fears and warnings of possible attacks on the World Cup public screenings by Somalia’s al-Shabab Islamist terrorists.

The Germans watched the match in some style while sitting on settees in the 1.FC Union stadium in Berlin.

‘No child should live life looking like a sheep!’ Thousands sign petition for Beyonce and Jay Z to take better care of Blue Ivy’s hair

A petition has been launched asking Beyonce and Jay Z to comb their two-year-old daughter Blue Ivy’s hair.

The Change.org page for petition, which was started by a woman named Jasmine Toliver, reads: ‘As a woman who understands the importance of hair care, it’s disturbing to watch a child suffering from the lack of hair moisture.

‘The parents of Blue Ivy, Sean Carter aka Jay Z and Beyonce have failed at numerous attempts of doing Blue Ivy’s hair. This matter has escalated to the child developing matted dreads and lint balls. Please let’s get the word out to properly care for Blue Ivy hair.’

So far the campaign has amassed an impressive 3,601 supporters, with people giving their reasons in the comments section.

‘Because no child whose mom spends thousands on her hair (monthly) should live life looking like a sheep!’ wrote one woman.

But not everyone was quite so on board with the cause. ‘This is the dumbest thing I have seen in my life,’ wrote one woman.

‘You have no right to assume that you are the authority on anyone’s hair, you judgmental females, that is her child. Not yours!’

Ms Toliver has since stated that the page was a joke, writing on her Facebook page: ‘People just need to breathe and chill out.’

She told BuzzFeed: ‘I never thought my opinion of comb, care and moisturize would make a big deal. I admire she’s natural. I’m natural myself. But natural doesn’t mean to be left alone.

‘I recommend finger detangling with water and coconut oil. Then an organic conditioner. But Blessings to Blue. I apologize to anyone I might of offended [sic].’

Pope Francis Confirms World Cup Neutrality

Հռոմի պապHe recently renewed his Argentine passport and remains an official card-carrying member of his favorite Buenos Aires football club. But Pope Francis has pledged absolute neutrality for the World Cup.

Francis recalled during an interview published Friday with the Barcelona newspaper “La Vanguardia,” that Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff had asked him during a February visit to the Vatican to at least be neutral during the competition.

Laughing, Francis said: “The Brazilians asked for neutrality. I’ll keep my word because Brazil and Argentina are always opponents.”

On Thursday, Francis issued a video message pep talk to players and fans alike, urging them to make the World Cup a showcase for teamwork and solidarity and not an exhibition of racism, individualism and greed.

Argentina plays its first match Sunday, against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Schumacher ‘to be moved out of intensive care and placed in rehab’ four months after skiing accident… but if he was going to wake up he would have by now, say doctors

շումախեր

The battle for Michael Schumacher’s coma recovery has apparently entered a new phase with him being moved out of intensive care into a rehabilitation ward.

If true, it means that Schumacher, 45, is out of danger from dying from his injuries – but the level of progress he has made remains questionable.

It comes four months after doctors announced they would begin the process of awaking him from the artificially induced coma he was placed in following a ski accident in the French Alps on December 19 last year.

However, experts say if he was going to wake up, he would have done so by now.

Medical sources always said that there would come a point when doctors would have to inform his wife Corinna, brother Ralf and father Rolf that there is nothing more they can do for him on the emergency station.

The seven-time world champion’s family and manager last spoke about Schumacher’s health condition in the middle of April, stating that the German ace has ‘moments of consciousness and awakening.’ Since then there have been no fresh updates, fuelling speculation that he will not make a full recovery.

Ukrainian official: Russian tanks have entered the country

ուկրաինաThree Russian tanks and other military vehicles crossed the border into Ukraine on Thursday, prompting a skirmish between Ukrainian and Russian forces, acting Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry told the BBC that the claim was “another fake piece of information.”

According to Avakov, tanks crossed the border at a checkpoint controlled by pro-Russian separatists in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine. Armored vehicles and artillery were part of the columns, Avakov said, citing Ukrainian intelligence.

Two of the tanks split off and headed in the direction of Gorlovka, also known as Horlivka, and were attacked by Ukrainian military forces, Avakov said.

Part of that column was destroyed, he said.

Also on Thursday, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin “held a substantial and long phone conversation,” the Ukrainian President’s media office said, but it was unclear if that conversation occurred before or after the reported tank incursion.

The leaders discussed Poroshenko’s peace plan to resolve the situation in the east of Ukraine, the media office said.

Fed up businessman’s last straw: Indian owner of £53,000 Jaguar turns to donkey power after it keeps breaking down

Rahul Thackreym

An Indian Jaguar owner has taken to driving round town in his new car with it being pulled by donkeys because he says it is the only way to make it move.

Businessman Rahul Thackreym, 38, who lives in India’s western Ahmedabad city came up with the idea after the brand new £53,000 car repeatedly broke down.

He claims he went back to the dealership to get the Jaguar XJ model fixed on several occasions, but as soon as one problem was fixed, another cropped up.

He said: ‘I was fed up with going back and getting them to put things right only to have something else go wrong.

‘In order to make sure I could at least still use it and to let the dealer know what I thought of their cars, I came up with the idea of having it towed around by donkeys.

‘Basically, a donkey it seems is more reliable than a Jaguar.’

He said that he had bought the car on May 7 when the trouble started.
The Indian dealership declined to comment on the case as they are still in talks with Mr Thackreym.

Turkey and United States Conspire to Issue April 24 Statements

Հարութ Սասունյան

By Harut Sassounian

www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com

While it is not surprising to learn that Turkey and the United States have coordinated their official declarations on the Armenian Genocide, recent revelations have confirmed their shameful behind-the-scenes schemes.

In a speech delivered in Australia late last year, former US Ambassador to Armenia John Evans revealed for the first time that the State Department regularly conferred with the Turkish Embassy in Washington on the content of the US President’s annual April 24 statement on the Armenian Genocide.

This clearly reflects the degree of collaboration between Turkey and the United States on the genocide issue, and even more appalling, American officials’ succumbing to the gag rule imposed by a denialist regime!

The American-Turkish collusion on the Armenian Genocide issue was recently corroborated by Deniz Kahraman in the Aydinlik Turkish newspaper, revealing that the two governments jointly drafted the statement that Prime Minister Erdogan issued on April 23, 2014. He offered condolences to Armenians, Turks, and others who died from various causes during World War I, thus equating the deaths of Turkish soldiers with Armenian Genocide victims.

Basing his information on unnamed diplomatic sources, Kahraman wrote that the White House had been fully aware of the content of Erdogan’s statement in advance of its release. In fact, the Turkish Prime Minister’s text was prepared with U.S. input and finalized by officials in both countries. It appears that the initial text was prepared by the Turkish Foreign Ministry, after which the White House made some modifications, “based on U.S. sensitivities” on this issue. On April 21, the Turkish Foreign Ministry forwarded the final text to Prime Minister Erdogan’s office which released it to the public on April 23.

Kahraman also revealed that in return for accepting U.S. modifications of Erdogan’s statement, Washington offered to block the pending Armenian Genocide resolution in the Senate, after its adoption by the Foreign Relations Committee in early April.

Aydinlik reported that Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has personally followed since last year the Armenian Diaspora’s preparations for the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Turkey is reportedly evaluating its countermoves, which include convincing the Armenian government to revive the comatose Armenian-Turkish protocols, while simultaneously energizing the mediating efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group to resolve the Karabagh (Artsakh) conflict through public diplomacy.

According to Aydinlik, Ankara is evaluating its plans on how best to counter Armenians who are pursuing their demands from Turkey through three separate channels: “legal, political, and public opinion.” Kahraman reported that a serious political rift emerged last June between Turkey and the US, after which Washington started pressuring Turkey to take more resolute steps on the Armenian Genocide issue and normalize relations with Israel. To appease the United States, the Turkish Prime Minister issued a statement on April 23, on the eve of the 99th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Aydinlik also reported that the decision of the European Court of Human Rights in favor of Turkish denialist Dogu Perincek had strengthened Ankara’s hand in international circles. However, Washington wanted Turkey to be more accommodating on the Armenian Genocide issue. That is why Turkish and US officials orchestrated the release of a public statement by Erdogan on April 23, right before Pres. Obama’s own statement on April 24.

It is therefore not surprising that State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki had high praise for Erdogan’s April 23 statement, describing it as a positive step that would pave the way for improved relations between Armenia and Turkey. Unbeknownst to the public, the State Department was in fact praising a statement that it had helped draft.

While Turkey and the United States are playing a dishonest game of publicly supporting each other’s privately orchestrated statements on the Armenian Genocide, Foreign Minister Davutoglu let the cat out of the bag by announcing in Parliament that Erdogan’s April 23 message of condolences was part of the Turkish campaign to undermine Armenian efforts to commemorate the Centennial of the Genocide.

Finally, I wish to remind all those who have wrongly claimed that Erdogan’s April 23 message was an unprecedented pronouncement by a Turkish leader, almost 90 years ago, on June 22, 1926, Pres. Kemal Ataturk made a truly bold statement in an interview with the Los Angeles Examiner: “These leftovers of the Young Turk Party who should have been made to account for the lives of millions of our Christian subjects who were ruthlessly driven en masse from their homes and massacred….”

World’s smallest school: Italian girl, 8, is the ONLY pupil at elementary school with one teacher… and lots of imaginary friends

elementary - Alpette, Turin

There’s a teacher in Italy who has very few problems controlling her class – because there’s only one pupil in it.

In fact, there’s only one pupil in the entire school.

The elementary in the tiny town of Alpette, Turin, is believed to be the smallest in the world and is attended by eight-year-old Sofia Viola.

The third-grade student is taught all her subjects by 33-year-old Isabella Carvelli – the only teacher at the school.
And she admits it is sometimes so lonely she has to imagine there are other children in the classroom.

Sofia hasn’t always been the only student at the school, which used to be the city hall.

Last year there were four older pupils but they moved on when they finished fifth grade.

Next year, she will be joined by some pupils from kindergarten – but for now she has the whole classroom to herself.

Sofia’s favourite subjects are Italian and English and she loves school outings in to the surrounding mountains.

She also gets to visit a larger school twice a week where she socialises with other children her age.
